Since I started drinking kombucha tea a few months ago, I've read several books on the subject. Now that I have read Gunther W. Frank's book, I don't feel the need to read any of the remaining others. He gives complete information about what's known about the culture, different ways to brew the tea, how to store the culture, what to do when problems arise, the effects of drinking the tea, etc. What I particularly like is that he provides all information he has come across, even when he disagrees with it. Unlike some other authors, he's not condescending or proprietary about kombucha.

He seems like a wise person. The final chapter, which is entitled something along the lines of: 'Is Health Really the Most Important Thing?' is worth reading in its own right.

If you are interested in learning about kombucha tea, I'd definitely recommend this book.

A Pantheist's Perspective

Review Date: 2008-09-05
Barbara Boss has synthesized much complex information into a convenient little manual about living positively and purposefully in our world. By explaining in simple terms the current state of knowledge in physics and metaphysics, she gives us a picture of the makeup of the universe, how it works and how we fit into it. She puts into perspective current concepts and topics such as vibes, harmonics, meditation and self-healing and shows how integral these concepts are to attaining an evolved state of being.
She encourages us to get in touch with our metaphysical selves in order to strengthen our connections to the universe, each other, and our own "inner knowing." She made "mystical new-age" concepts make logical sense. There was one way in particular that this book struck a chord with me. The discussion of universal consciousness, the power of the mind, and "loving intention" uncovers what could be termed a "cosmic religion," one that fits all. It points up the similarity between prayer and meditation and shows the powerful potential of our minds, particularly when working in concert for the same end--that of universal harmony.

Essential Reading for Serious Students of Homoeopathy

Review Date: 2006-06-08
So, your serious about studying homoeopathy? Well, after the Organon and Chronic Diseases, this book should be your next step in learning the philosophy behind this unique system of medicine.
This is an essential book which every practicising homoeopath will return to again and again throughout their practice. If possible, I would recommend you buy the editions printed in the United States or the UK as these will last longer and the investment will be worth it.

James Tyler Kent is one of the best known homoeopaths in the modern world and the reading of his work is essential (in this student's opinion), but it is a guide only to the philosophy, as stated in the preface. It should be read in conjunction with the Organon and used as a study guide. Being clearer than the Organon, it will help steer you in the right direction.

Enjoy!

This book gives the average person real insight into how to tap into the natural process of healing. This process must start from within each person. A holistic healer like Dr. Margolin assists the patient in obtaining and recognizing messages from within the body and mind and in determining the proper course of remedial treatment. The book gives patients the courage to turn away from modern medicine and its reliance on medication as a solution to all healing problems. The body itself is the repository of all knowledge necessary to accomplish healing. The symptoms of disease - from headache to cancer - are the body's method of alerting us of deeper root causes that must be addressed. Holistic healers help in eliciting from the body the preferred method of remedial treatment. This book lays all this out in a careful way.

Read, if you care about your health.

Once again Nick Kemp mixes music and voice to produce deep states of relaxation, whilst pointing to the deeper truths that are available to all. You may find a mantra here, or simply sounds and word.

Either way this CD is highly recommended for anyone who has considered this idea... "when you've seen beyond your SELF, you may find peace of mind is waiting there."

This is definitely one of my fav books on aromatherapy. Lots of information about essential oils, exercise, nutrition and self care are covered here. The authors present 40 different essential oils including the all popular lavender, chamomile and orange oils. I find this a very calming book for me reminding me that I need to slow down and relax. A bunch of aromatherapy tips and recipes are given making it a good book for the beginner starting aromatherapy and the expert. Very easy and enjoyable to read without getting technical. I will be referring to this one often.

Finally there is a book on Aromatherapy that is easy to read and easy to follow. With one page references on cautions, properties and blending for example, you will always feel confident to use essential oils in your daily life no matter what the reason. You almost feel as though the authors are speaking to you in your own lounge. There are heaps of tips and ideas from lovers and romance through to pregnancy, your mental and physical wellbeing, the workplace, skin and hair care and heaps more. 40 essential oils are discussed at length giving you all the information you need to understand the ancient healing art of aromatherapy. Even if you are the most avid aromatherapy user you will find this book helpful! Whilst essential oils are the tool the authors focus on, this is more than an aromatherapy book as there are so many other interesting and important points on health and self care for women.
The photography throughout this book also makes it rather special. With over 50 images of 'real' women (friends and family of the authors - they insisted no models were used!) the effect is evocative and beautiful. They break up the text, again making it very easy to read. This is an excellent gift for women of all ages.
Having met the authors and attended one of their workshops I can vouch for their sincerity, their humour and their incredible ability to hold audience attention. They are so passionate and absolutely fantastic speakers. I highly recommend this book and believe every woman in the world should have a copy!

Dao De Jing Way of Listening to Your Body
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2005-11-20
Andrew Powell is the founding chair of the Psychotherapy and Spirituality Special Interest Group of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCP). A fellow of the RCP, he practiced medicine as a psychiatrist and psychotherapist in London and Oxford for more than a quarter century. Dr. Powell was educated at the Braynston School and Trinity College, Cambridge. He attended St. Thomas's Hospital Medical School in London for his clinical training and received his bachelor of medicine degree with distinction and his bachelor of surgery degree from Cambridge in 1969. After working first in psychiatry and then in general medicine, he took two years of post-graduate training in psychiatry at the Maudsley Hospital, London, followed by three years of post-graduate training in psychotherapy there. Dr. Powell served as a consultant psychotherapist and chief of the department of psychotherapy at St. George's Hospital, London, and a senior lecturer in psychiatry at the University of London from 1978 to 1989 where he was co-director of the master's degree program in psychotherapy. For the next eleven years, he was consultant psychotherapist at Warneford Hospital in Oxford and honorary senior lecturer in psychotherapy at Oxford University. He served as co-director of Oxford's introductory course in psychodynamic therapy. A member of the Royal College of Physicians, the Institute of Group Analysis in London, and the British Psychodrama Association, Dr. Powell has published numerous papers in scientific and medical journals. He is also the co-author (with Bisong Guo) of Listen to Your Body: The Wisdom of Dao, which was published in 2001 by the University of Hawaii Press.

Dr. Bisong Guo, MD was born in China and studied Western medicine at Fuzhou Medical School before specialising in Traditional Chinese Medicine. She later joined the staff of the Chinese Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Beijing. For more than twenty-five years she has intensively practised qigong, studying with Buddhist qigong masters and Daoist monks in remote mountainous regions of China. In 1989 she moved to England and established a TCM practice in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, where over ten years she treated more than five thousand patients. She has collaborated on research projects in Germany and now travels widely overseas conducting seminars and workshops. Dr. Guo continues to teach qigong in the UK, continental Europe and the U.S.A.

It's very interesting to realize that under Dao De Jing scripture, there is a way to inteprete and adapt into real lifestyle modification.
In fact, Traditional Chinese Medicine wisely use Nature as a real mind-body medicine preventive approach.
After reading this book, ones should practice "Qigong" or "Yoga" everyday to get "In" the system.
Observe carefully while you are relax and doing mind-body exercise, then messages(vibration) will send back to you if you need to adjust any things for your lifestyle.
Simply read but do not practice will not expose to any progress in health promotion.

Chinese health philosophy simplified

Review Date: 2002-08-25
This is the best book I've found that explains how the Chinese view the body and how to get well and stay well without taking pills and seeing a doctor all the time. I've been trying to figure out how to get well and keep well as it seems in the last several years my health has been on a roller coaster. Guo and Powell clearly describe the nature of "chi" (our body's source of energy) and give simple ways to build it and conserve it in every day living. What I liked the most was their non- judgemental and non-preachy tone. They give suggestions in a very gentle way, thus allowing one to act on them or not act on them without feeling like one must do or die. This is a must read for anyone on the alternative healing path.

Luminous Essence: New Light on the Healing Body an Alternati

Review Date: 2005-01-15
I found this gem at a booksale and was overjoyed to be finding something about the "luminous essence" --meaning our lightbody and how it relates to alternative healing. While I believe some of the best parts in the book are his relaying information from his teachers, he has provided us with valuable information--particularly pertinent to energy therapists. This book provided a bridge for me from Reiki to Chinese Energy Therapies. It helped me better understand the function of the energy body and how that controls physical body health issues.
I would love to read more on the subject if he offers it. Parts were reminiscent of Castenada with an oriental flair.

An Absolute Necessity For Every English Speaking Vajrayana Practitioner

Review Date: 2007-02-24
What makes Shri Dharmakirti such an amazing teacher of Tibetan Buddhism is his laser-like intellect and command of the English language. I have been fortunate enough to hear lectures of his on these topics, via bootleg mp3's, and this book follows those lectures, providing more depth to the topics covered.

This book sets forth the entire process one must go through in Vajrayana. In this book, Dharmakirti spells out these steps with such clarity and precision that one can cast aside the confusion that hangs over many well-intentioned Dharma practitioners and replace it with a rock solid understand.

I feel intense gratitude towards Shri Dharmakirti and his efforts.

An Extraordinary Introduction to Buddhist Tantra
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-13
This is an Indian published book written by an Indian disciple of the Dalai Lama. The book gives a traditional account of Buddhist Vajrayana in the tradition in the lineage of Je Tsongkhapa, founder of the Gelug tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. This book is a very full introduction to the history and theory of Buddhist Tantra, which thrived in India from about the fourth century AD until the barbarian invasions, and is still practiced by Tibetan Buddhists today. The chapters of the book are:

Introduction
Tantric History
The Tantric Practitioner
Tantric Worldview
The Tantric Guru
The Tantric Path
Conclusion
Appendix I: The Tantric view of the Historical Buddha
Appendix II: Buddhist/ Tantric Cosmology

I found Shri Dharmakirti to be refreshingly upfront about the esoteric practices of Tanta, and for such a short introduction there is much that is not to be found in other introductory works. The presentation is quite traditional and focuses almost entirely on the Highest Yoga Tantra practices, and on how it forms part of the Mahayana path. One is left with a feeling for just how much personal dedication and learning one needs to embark on Tantric practice. And in only 11 pages, the author gives perhaps the clearest introductory explanation of the concept of `Emptiness' I've read anywhere.

From the back cover:
"Tantra, considered by many as a dangerous and secret path, invariably generates a tremendous amount of curiosity. In this, the first comprehensive book of its kind, Shri Dharmakirti gives us a rare glimpse into the fascinating nature of Tantra.

"A practitioner of the Mahayana Tantra uses his intellect and moral discipline to attain Buddhahood, the highest state of existence. How to achieve this state was first shown by the Buddha and, after him, by various incarnations of Indian and Tibetan gurus such as the Dalai Lama. The author gives us a detailed account of the moral, ethical and philosophical basis of Buddhist Tantra. He also shows how the Buddhist Tantric Path of the Highest Secret Mantra decisively addresses the three crucial problems that every genuine spiritual warrior must resolve - problems of death, sexuality and the true nature of reality.

"The author discusses various facets of the Buddhist Tantric Path: its history, its harnessing of sexual energy to access subtle levels of reality, the doctrine of Karma, the concept of profound emptiness that is the philosophical core of the Buddha Dharma, and the Wheel of Existence or the Bhava-Chakra. Narrated simply and enriched with visual representations of the author's vision of Tantra, this is an invaluable guide for those seeking a meaningful spiritual path."

This book is pure gold!
