A systematically arranged text presenting the "Maitland's concept" of manual physiotherapy through joint mobilization and manipulation. The approach focuses on detailed assessment, clinical reasoning and reassessment to determine the physical dysfunction and efficacy of manual physiotherapy techniques. It is not the techniques themselves only but the communication, interaction and reasoning processess which create a good manual physiotherapy approach.

A classical "bible" for any physiotherapist specializing in manual physiotherapy.

Mother Nature Knows Best

Despite the mantra of the 1950's when Father Knew Best, we all know Mama's the one holding the apron strings. The wisdom of mothers' hands has been passed down from one generation to the next, through food, spices, herbs and home-made medicines better than any pharmaceutical solution. If you've ever tasted my mother-in-law's homemade chicken soup when you've had the ickiest cold since time memorial, you'll know -Mama really does know best.

Mama's Home Remedies: Discover Time-Tested Secrets of Good Health and the Pleasures of Natural Living is a tribute to the old wives' wisdom that transcends modernity. It will inspire you to reach for your vegetable pantry before you head for the pharmacy. Among other things, the instrinsic magic of beets, potatoes, and wine grape leaves are revealed in these pages. Written by Svetlana Konnikova who grew up in the vineyards of Moldova, this book tells us to return to our roots - literally.

Part natural living guide, part naturopathic treatise, Mama's Home Remedies offers all kinds of advice women used to glean at the kitchen table as they nourished their families' hearts, bodies and souls. Cabbage leaves applied to the forehead can alleviate headaches. Inhaling the steam from potato water drains your sinuses. My all-time favorite for the winter blues: pomegranate juice.

As we speed along in our rapid-fire lifestyles, we're lucky to have Ms. Konnikova's immense knowledge wrapped in Mama's Home Remedies' 314 pages. The next time I'm faced with a health challenge, I will seek a gentler solution straight from Mother Nature, the world's first and only true healer.

"It is snowing outside right now and I am writing a book review for a wonderful volume that I can highly recommend.. It is called Mama's Home Remedies, and is written by Svetlana Konnikova, formerly a journalist in the Soviet Union.

It is a How-to-Autobiography that recounts not only a wide variety of natural remedies, but how they were learned at the feet of her mother and grandmother, with a wonderful potpourri of folk and fairy tales, and modern and ancient natural science interspersed between.

Most books like this, when something is wrong, you go into them, find the subject in the index, and then look up the suggestions for helping alleviate it. This book does that too, but in addition, when life is stressful and you are looking for relief, you can open this book and escape into the fairy tales, folk stories and life's adventures of Svetlana and her family, along with fascinating explorations of such things as ancient Druid beliefs about trees or the instincts animals have for healing themselves that we can learn to emulate in our lives as well.

Mama's Home Remedies is so well organized, with everything arranged in bullitted boxes, numbered lists, (also boxed,) and boxed sidebars containing the stories, that everything is ridiculously easy to find. Usually you have to dig through a book to find a fact remembered but not bookmarked. Not so here. All you need to do is remember the topic, or chapter. Once there, a quick thumbing through the pages will take you directly to the right box, and there you are. It is a model for the way I am going to lay out my upcoming books.

In the few short weeks I have had the book, it has earned a place on the bookshelf right next to my computer, so that when I need a break, it is right at hand. It is a marvelous vehicle for stress relief. She has a whole chapter on stress, but nowhere does she mention picking up her book and reading a few pages as one of the ways. She should. "

I found this book in a state of confused abandonment at my local bookstore, lost among a mumbo-jumbo of unrelated material. I took it home and doubted my purchase until I had tried to obtain TCM information from about five other sources and felt completely confused. TCM can be very difficult to understand, let alone explain, without the guidance of such clear minds as Dr. Fan's. Many books on TCM fail to follow a clear line of explanation and get lost among the confusing similarity and seeming interchangeability of terms found in many sources, but Dr. Fan never does that. Clear, scholarly, a bit dry at times, he never leaves the reader in a void, but rather goes back on himself so as to ensure understanding. His presentation really does TCM a great service, as he dispenses completely with esoteric-sounding, tried and trite pseudo-explanations found elsewhere, and shows how TCM really is a scientific, integrated, logical science. Even obscure concepts such as "disrespect" among the five phases are explained clearly. Differential diagnosis is covered step by step, and Dr. Fan again shows he did extensive homework by summarizing and giving clear correlations between all stages of this most important TCM diagnostic technique. The explanations are brief, but they are a sure starting point and landmark for the student pursuing in-depth knowledge of TCM. For anyone who is looking to study TCM, and for students already lost in the half-english works of authors whose use of the language is their most appalling shortcoming, Dr. Fan's work is my recommendation. And for all practitioners of TCM, please give this book a read, you will find in it a renewed sense of the scientific coherence and depth of TCM at its best.

Clear, useful, and very informative book.

Spiritual meditations to start each day right!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-28
Hugh Prather's "Morning Notes" provides a short spiritual meditation for each day of the year. He points out in the introduction that the most important thing to remember as we set our daily purpose is to ask for God's help.

The meditations aren't dated; they're just numbered from 1 to 365, so you can read them in order or jump around at random. They're a great way to start the day. He includes meditations on topics like:

-- To be in God is simply to be connected.
-- Kindness is the touch of God.
-- I release you from your past, that I may see you as God sees you.
-- I will give peace with my thoughts and cause no harm with my words.
-- I am not a victim of my childhood.
-- All inner shifts are reflected outward...and many more

After each short heading, he provides a paragraph to help that day's message really sink in.

This is a really nice collection of meditations. They're quick, but they set a very positive tone for the day!

Great Spiritual and Emotional Nutrition!

"Over the years I have resisted several requests for a book of 365 thoughts because I felt there were a number of excellent ones on the market, and I didn't think I had much to add. But a year or so ago I noticed that I have certain ideas that I keep turning to when I wake up in the morning...So this book is a little different in that it contains what I personally need to hear-over and over." - From the book

The thoughts we think upon awakening have a ripple affect. If our minds are filled with anxious anticipation, regret, self-loathing, worry, or judgment, our day will likely unfold with chaos in its wake.

Fortunately, author Hugh Prather has written a delightful devotional filled with sage advice, spiritual clarity, and practical ideals in his book Morning Notes: 365 Meditations to Wake You Up. Each meditation brings readers closer to present moment awareness, gentleness, forgiveness, and stillness.

Some of the wonderful observations in Morning Notes include:

"Problems do not justify unkindness...My chronic need to rush signals that I am willing to attack my body and fracture my mind. Kindness to myself as well as to others must be a part of the process or else it is ultimately meaningless."

"The journey back to God is the journey back to now. To ascend into heaven is to sink so deeply into now that we lose interest in past regrets and anxious anticipations...To think about what it means to be present is not to be present. Little children are so unsophisticated that they run around, giggle, stare at strangers, taste rocks, and just altogether have way too much fun. They're so clueless, they don't even know they have mastered advanced metaphysical concepts and mystical techniques. Today, I too will practice being clueless."

"The divine does not `test' us or give us `trials' before blessing us. How could God increase pressure, expand the rules, or set new demands if divine Love is changeless and the peace of God is eternal? We know when we are hearing the voice of God because the opposite happens. Suddenly all the pressure is lifted and we feel loved just the way we are. This is also the gift I must give those around me."

"How could one person's way possibly be superior to another person's way if God is leadings us all? If I believe that my spiritual path is superior, my path is not spiritual. Spirit is One. The divine doesn't contain degrees of correctness. Either we all share the same Truth and ultimate destiny, or there is no truth and we are lost in a reality of private perception and momentary interpretation."

I enjoyed reading Morning Notes: 365 Meditations to Wake You Up all the way through, finding much wisdom, humor, and spiritual nourishment in its pages. This book isn't divided by date, only number, so you can pick it up at your leisure-reading one passage at a time or perhaps a few. I look forward to dipping into this book at random, whenever I need a pick-me-up or a daily dose of a potent spiritual vitamin.

Makes You Think....and Change

This is one of the best books I've ever purchased. I ride a train into work each morning and each morning I pull out this book and read an entry. The entries are short, so even if I don't have a long ride, I have time to read it. Each entry never fails to make me think, to reconsider my actions, and urge me to make a positive change in my life. Entries tend to build on each other, connecting on a theme for a few days. One entry may open your awareness to one area of your life and the next give you something to look for in that area...and soon, you are taking the steps to becoming a better person.

Stein has successfully condensed into one book natural remedy information that would take years of reading otherwise. It is a tremendously valuable book for any woman (or man). Her choice of format is extremely practical as a layperson's reference book - each chapter addresses an ailment followed by the application of the healing modalities (ie homeopathy, accupressure, emotional healing). This gives the reader the ability to choose which ones they like best or to use several to support each other. She covers complaints from PMS, vaginal warts, systemic candida to thinning hair, depression and asthma. When I have a friend who is sick I find it is the first book I pull off the shelf

I highly recommend this book as a must have in your home.

This little gem of a book explains ten approaches to healing--vitamins/minerals, acupressure, homeopathy, herbs, etc.--in detail. It then tackles dozens of specific ailments, from AIDS to warts, and gives detailed instructions on treatment with each of the ten approaches.

Stein is extremely thorough, clear, and helpful. In dealing with a medical problem recently, I combed through all the herbals on my shelf and had ample opportunity to compare them all directly. Stein's Natural Remedy Book for Women was the best.

I have owned this book for well over 15 years and have used their recomendations on myself, my family, friends over and over hundred of times and I have never been dissappointed with the results.

I just can't believe that clay is not more widelly used for its magnificent healing properties. I can only imagine that its unpopularity is based on the fact that "it is just too cheap and it is so readily available every where" and also because it may become a bit messy to handle until you get the hung of it.

I am still as amazed at the cure properties of the clay as the very first time I used it. I'll only mention my last experience with it:

today I am 80% recovered from a terribly painfull and stiff neck, I had applied warm clay on it twice yesterday after a couple of days in agony.

I have tried to buy this book for years for my friends and it has been always out of print.!
