I am an alternative practitioner and have been interested in ayurveda for a number of years. Out of the numerous books I have explored in the field, this has to be one of the most concise introductions. The first few chapters lay the foundation to what turned out to be a very fascinating read. The book demonstrates the importance of ayurveda in a modern lifestyle which makes it all the more relevant in this day and age. Included are numerous case studies and preactical tips. The book is well illustrated and included contact details for further information.

An excellent introduction

This is an absolutely fantastic introduction to the complexities of ayurveda. The narration is clear and concise and more importantly it is easily accessible to those with little or no understanding of the subject. From the outset Dr Godagama highlights the importance of ayurveda in the modern western world, and provides practical advice and tips which can be incorporated into the modern lifetsyle. In addition, throughout the book Dr.Godagama's draws on his own personal wealth of experience in treating patients with numerous conditions, stemming from irritable bowel syndrome to diabetes. This is a must read book for anyone requiring an easy to understand introduction to this fascinating science.....I found it a pleasure to read.

I have owned this book for years. My mother and I swap it back and forth time and time again. Great reference with many simple remedies. None I found were harmful in any way. Either it worked or on to trying something else. I'm buying a secondy copy so I'm not with out it. Bummed it cost so much I paid $14.95 the first time but it's worth it.

My sister and I met the doctor in 1975 the year I arrived in CA. Went there for a physical problem. Were impressed and purchased the book right then and there. We have tried many of the cures, etc., and have found them to work. My daughter swears by it also. Please keep printing this book for all those coming in the future that will need it.

I purchased an original edition in the early 80's and have relied on it for simple remedies. My friends have conquered such things as kidney stones and migranes from utilizing some of the remedies suggested. I recently mis-placed my copy and that caused me a great deal of stress. I felt like I had lost an important weapon in my attempts to stay healthy and well. I can not express the true joy of knowing that I can get another copy so I can feel whole and fully armed again!

A definitive reference in the field of clinical hypnosis

Hartland's book on hypnosis is a staple in the field. It has gone through many editions, this being the most recent and up-to-date. The information is scholarly, well presented, and clinically very useful. The authors do seem to have an academic bent and a bit of an anti-American bias. They question the importance of Milton Erickson's work and poo poo the NLP literature, while at the same time borrowing many clinical techniques from Erickson and NLP without giving due credit. That minor objection aside, I found this book to be richly clinically relevant and I would recommend it to anyone who uses hypnosis in clincial practice. It is one of the "Bibles" in the hypnotherapeutic literature.

Very well written and easy to follow. Much more than I expected on topics that therapists encounter. Great book for those that are interested in hypnosis and want to learn how it is applied. Excellent for those that are already practicing. Many scripts alone and how to use them make this book well worth the price. No steps left out. I have to keep this in the office and often return to it for it's valuable information. For start to finish this is worth it's weight for what you can learn and apply. The definitive guide to alternative healing centers.

Review Date: 1998-11-21
It's been a long time coming but my search is finally over. I have been waiting for a book of this type to come along since I was first diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. Finding contemporary medicine unable to treat the pains I suffer, I soon began seeking "alternative" medicine. I was shocked to find so little information available and it soon became a struggle to combine work and healing on my very frequent business travels. Now with Ms. Miller's book always tucked away at my desk I am sure to find a center to fill my needs. I find her guide to be accurate, concise and interesting. Her descriptive style entices me to try new places and new treatments. I wish this book had been written five years ago, it sure would have saved me a lot of time, trouble and headaches. I seriously recommend this book as a must for travel agencies with clientele looking for "alternative" vacations. They and their clients will not be disappointed.

Sensational! Very informative.

While reading many questions came into my mind - I am glad there is the other very good book "teach me how to love...." which provides many answers in a very touching, sometimes amusing way.

This book is very informative in the art of healing the body, mind, and spirit through the use of energy. It deals with the healing of physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects with the use of energy from the universe that is available to anyone with the desire to use it. What makes this such a good book is that the author passes on information to others with actual examples from his own healing experiences. A very good read!

This was a great book for do-it-yourselfers. I've enjoyed the different recipes that focus on different conditions. This did not introduce many different types of beauty products or treatments, but offered a tremendous amount of work in aromatherapy treatments for different types of conditions. It's a great book to keep on hand.

Great reference & well worth the price!

This comprehensive "health & wellness" book not only covers aromatherapy (my main interest), but also covers breath work, diet/lifestyle tips, herbal remedies & teas, sound & music therapy, and yoga. It provides a variety of remedies for an exhaustive list of ailments, such as: Allergies, Chicken Pox, Colds, Depression, Headaches, Hyperactivity, Insomnia, Muscle Cramps, Nausea, Dry/Oily/Sensitive Skin, Stress & Anxiety -- to name a few.

A wide variety of aromatherapy, herb, and food recipes are included, such as: Asthma Oil Blend; Bachache Massage Oil; Cool, Calm, & Collected Tea; Peaceful Sleep Spray; Farm Fresh Facial Scrub; Lavender-Rose Silken Lotion; Sore Throat Gargle; Stay-Healthy Spice Seasoning; Tasty Teething Biscuits; and Old-Fashioned Garlic and Onion Soup. Pure essential oils are a must for the aromatherapy recipes, but most other recipes include easily-obtained ingredients, which can be found at a grocery or health food store.

Packed with useful information, some case studies, and factual data, it's also written in an easy-to-read, conversational style. My only complaint is that the Essential Oil References section in the Appendix could have been lengthier & more helpful. For instance, the author lists only one company as a supplier of pure essential oils. And only lists HER OWN company as a source for additional Aromatherapy and Holistic Education information. Also, one future recommendation for the book would be to have an additional index of recipes by title (e.g., currently, you have to remember that the Garlic Soup recipe is in the "Bronchitis" section or look up "soup" in the index).

Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for ways to cope with everyday stress or specific health/emotional problems, or just to improve their quality of life!

I am all about taking care of our health in a holist way. The great thing about this book is that, for me, it does two things at once. It gives natural remedies for health conditions that feel self-nurturing. I so appreciate that. Recently I had bronchitis and while I applied the natural remedies I felt pampered at the same time. Can't beat that ... especially when you're sick!!

I have read many books on imagery and find this one to be superior.

The text is well written with drawings to make everything clear. The author gives exercises one can use to rid oneself of disease and maintain health. There are testimonials and documented cases of using visualization to cure illness and maintain health. I highly recommend this book.

The best book on herbal healing by far!!
Helpful Votes: 19 out of 23 total.
Review Date: 2003-10-03
This is a vastly revised 2nd edition. Anyone perusing the numbers of herbs books available on the market should notice at least two shortcomings: 1. They are not written by practicing clinical herbalists and so they often just pass on 2nd and 3rd hand information 2. They are not wholistic in the sense that they do not integrate diet, lifestyle and the many other factors necessary for a successful therapeutic result. Then there is the current wave of herb books written by inexperienced medical authorities with little or not practical experience in the clinical herbal medicine. Most of these are practically useless.

None of this is true of the latest of edition of this Lesley Tierra's Healing with The Herbs of Life. This book offers the rare opportunity to participate in the herbal healing strategies of one of the world's foremost practicing herbalists with over 20 years clinical experience. Integrating Western and Chinese energetics, it is an excellent source for self healing useful for both the lay person and the professional practitioner.

When the qualities and energetics of diet and lifestyle are appropriately adjusted, herbs offer the most time-honored and effective way for treating the underlying causes of disease rather than merely the outer symptoms. With chapters on "Causes of disease," The Energy of Illness," "The process of Healing," Treatment of Specific conditions" along with other chapters on the "Energy of Food," "Living with the Seasons." The reader is fully empowered in the process of herbal medicine.

This is not simply another herb book with a catalogue of herbs and common indications but allows for a much needed personalized approach to herbal healing.

Another thing the reader will appreciate is that the book is well organized and well written making it all the more enjoyable and useful.

You will not regret owning a copy of this book.

The reader might check out the author's other unique book for kid's, appropriately called The Kid's Herbal.

Heal Beyond Symptoms

Review Date: 2005-10-27
Lesley Tierra's book is a refreshing look at the old system of energetic herbology. While many herbals focus on healing the ailments, this book introduces the concept of healing the energy imbalance. As such, it is not a reference book for a quick fix. It teaches a different philosophy for using herbs.

Western medicine once used such a concept as the equilibrium between humors. In "Healing with the Herbs of Life", the author uses the Chinese energetic system. She explains why an energetic approach to healing with herbs is more efficient than the ones dealing with symptoms.

This is a very useful book for curious amateur or professional herbalists and energy healing students:

Part 1 deals with herbal fundamentals such as herb chemistry, energy and a materia medica (dictionary of herbs) of 148 herbs from all over the world.

Part 2 discusses the energetic causes of illness, its energy, the process of healing according to the chinese five elements system and a compendium of specific conditions to treat with herbs, always in an energetic perspective and with general guidelines that may apply (keeping in mind that every ill person is different).

Part 3 deals with the energy of food, living with the seasons, herbal preparations.

There is also a complete appendice of resources, bibliography and glossary. An index to identify the names of herbs in their common names, latin names, chinese name and sanskrit name is included at the end.

Completely worth its price since it is so well done and complete.
