What a fun resource on alternative treatments! I never knew the "downside" of herbs or other alternative treatments. The author gives both the positive and negative--help or hype--about the most commonly touted holistic treatments. I always thought herbs were ALL safe--because they are natural. Not so--and the author has scientific studies to back it up. Good for her! Also like the helpful sidebars on all pages--little known tips about complementary methods of staying well. Super!

If you are thinking of using Alternative Medicine--herbs, Ayurvedic, Chiropractic, Chinese Medicine or mind/body therapies--you must know what they can REALLY DO--and the limitations of each. This book gives the TRUTH and HYPE. Totally changed the way I think about taking herbs--yes, some herbs can kill you; some herbs may enhance optimal health. KNOW the difference. This book will show you how to be discerning about what you put into your body. Superbly written--easy to understand--factual & helpful resource every family should have on their shelf.

Excellent book by Debra Fulghum Bruce! Written in her fresh, easy-to-read style, Bruce's book gives the TRUTH--and dispels the hype--about tons of alternative treatments. READ THIS BOOK before you take herbs, use alternative medicine practitioners, or toss your Rx away! It may SAVE YOUR LIFE! Bruce contends that some alternative treatments are excellent for reducing stress--which could stop illness. But as she says, when you have "the big stuff"--see your medical doctor. Herbs probably can't stop a cancer from growing! Trust in medicine--supplement with holistic treatments to reduce stress--make healthy lifestyle changes with diet & exercise. Brilliant book! Buy it.

After reading a number of alternative medicine books with so-called "star" or "name" authors in the last year, it was a pleasure to read a book that gives honest appraisals of differing methods of curing diseases and conditions. For once, there's no author trying to "sell" his theory, along with his vitamins, classes, whatever. Now I feel I know what to ask for when I visit the vitamin store, and I have some good questions to ask on doctor visits.

This book is more than I expected and it simply fantastic! What I was hoping for and expecting was a book that would outline the vibrational healing qualities of various plants and herbs and so forth. However it also contains beautifully drawn diagrams that illustrate meridian points and chakras, and she goes into energy healing theory and applicable healing practices such as reflexology and essential oil baths and so forth. This book is a treasure! I love it!

An essential book.

Deborah's book has been a mainstay in my healing practice for quite a few years; for myself and others. I am very grateful to her for bringing this book to life so that we may all benefit from the information and wisdom it contains, not only on essential oils but also on energy systems of the body, dowsing, intuition, healing, and other tidbits paramount to health. Thank you Deborah!

For years I have been hearing about aromatherapy but very little how-to or what works and why. I am delighted to finally find a book that includes answers to questions I had in a format that is easy to access. I have begun using some of the techniques Ms. Eidson relates in her book and have seen some amazing transformations in my life and in my family's. These changes range from direct health benefits to healing parts of my past I thought were forever to haunt me. My gratitude to Ms Eidson for getting into print such valuable information.

Aromatherapy, as an alternative healing method, has always been of interest to me. In the past, most of the books I have read on the subject have been too technical, boring or the author did not write about this subject in a way that was easily understood by his readers. That all changed once I picked up Deborah Eidson's new book titled Vibrational Healing: Revealing The Essence Of Nature Through Aromatherapy's Use Of Essential Oils. Her book arrived in the mail a few days ago and I didn't have a chance to read it until today. This morning, after I woke up, I noticed I was feeling mentally congested and my breathing was labored for no apparent reason. I decided to see what essential oils I had available in my collection that would relieve my congestion. I was intuitively drawn to my peppermint oil although I did not know why. After I had the opportunity to use the oil for a few minutes, I decided to read Ms. Eidson's book and find out what she had to say about it. Everything she wrote about peppermint oil rang true for me. It validated what I was experiencing and explained why the oil gave me instantaneously relief. Ms. Eidson's writing style is concise and compelling. Her book is very well organized and passionately written. Deborah's background and knowledge in the field of aromatherapy, in my opinion, is second to none. The wisdom she shares in her book about "essentials oils" is a must read for anyone who is into alternative methods of healing. The information she shares with her readers is safe, sound and practical. In her book, Ms. Eidson explains the use of each "essential oil" in great detail. She also provides a glossary, for some of the words she uses in her book, so her readers will clearly understand the message she is conveying to them. Most importantly, what she shares with her readers about essential oils and spiritual principles, works! I can not recommend her book highly enough.

A reference for use of aromatherapy.

This book has been an incredible tool for me to use as a reference. I have intuitively picked an essence or a combination of essences in the past, however, now I have a great set of information that provides a description of the oils and directions for releasing blocked energies. This validates my intuition and provides clarification on the mental level of these choices. I have also discerned that this book has many layers of information which provides guidance for the professional healer as well as the beginner.

I read this book and was blown away. Incredible stories, unbelievable, awe inspiring to say the least. This book describles stories of very sick people trying urine fasts, as a last resort, after years of traditional medical treatment and healing whatever ails them. I would also recommend "Your own perfect medicine" by Martha Christy and "the golden fountain" by coen van der kroon, two books I also read about urine therapy. I have done a few urine fasts and they really work to help you lose weight and junk in your body.

U T makes total sense. We daily overlook nature's gifts.

The universe keeps gifting us with blessings and we often miss them. Our education or culturization gets in the way. I really think the best things in life are free. The Water of Life by John Armstrong is a beginning, an opening door, that will hopefully change opinions. The cases presented are not only interesting they are convincing. My biggest complaint, is that there are not enough specifics for implementing. e.g. For application to the head/hair. How long should it remain on the hair. Should the hair then be shampooed, or just rinsed?

THE WATER OF LIFE : A Treatise on Urine Therapy by John W. Armstrong. Saffron Walden, Essex : The C. W. Daniel Co.Ltd., 2nd Edition 1971, Twelfth Impression, 1998.

Since its first publication in 1945, 'The Water of Life' has achieved something of the status of a classic. Having just finished reading it, I can understand why. Armstrong, who was a British naturopath, was a very modest man who never intended to write his book. But after repeated requests, and after considering that he had a duty to his fellow men and women to reveal the details of the miraculous therapy he had discovered, he went ahead, and we should all be intensely thankful that he did. The book is a goldmine of good sense, practical advice, brief though fascinating case studies, and astute observations on a wide range of matters.

His discovery - or perhaps rediscovery is a better word, since urine therapy was and is known and practised in many cultures and is even known to the animals - came about in a curious way. As a young man he suffered from consumption, had been passed through the hands of a whole slew of orthodox medical practitioners, none of whom had been able to cure him, and some of whom made his condition worse.

But he seems to have been a religious man, and one day, while pondering Proverbs V.xv : "Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well," he had a flash of inspiration which led him to link this passage with a few tales he'd heard about the curative properties of urine. Could this reference to "waters," he wondered, be a reference to the body's own water - urine? Having nothing to lose, he decided to give it a try.

He began drinking his own urine, was restored to health, and went on to lead a vigorous and productive life by helping to restore the health of many others, both human and animal. Incidentally, one of the interesting features of his book, which indicates something of his kindly and unselfish nature, is that he has included a Chapter XVI 'Urine-Therapy on Animals.'

In 'The Water of Life' he has provided details of the threefold 'urine fast' method he worked out, details which will be found enough to go on by mature adults of average intelligence who have a bit of common sense.

The most important point to understand, which he emphasizes throughout, is that one should NEVER attempt to use or ingest any substance other than urine and pure water - whether chemicals, drugs, alcohol, denatured foods, etc., - when undergoing a urine fast or 'penance' as he liked to call it.

The whole idea is to allow NATURE to take her course with as little interference from us as possible. A fast of urine and pure water, plus frequent, lengthy, and thorough urine massages, and, if necessary, the application of urine compresses, would, he felt, cure pretty well anyone of almost anything if undertaken long enough for the body to rid itself of toxins.

Armstrong's 'The Water of Life' is a very rich book, crammed with fascinating and useful information, and interwoven with brief case histories of almost every conceivable ailment. I couldnt even begin to do justice here to the wealth of ideas it contains.

Four books on urine therapy are currently available : those of Armstrong, Martha Christy, Coen van der Kroon, and Flora Peschek-Bohmer. Of these, the Peschek-Bohmer may be ignored as being both superficial and highly misleading on essential matters. The remaining three all serve to complement each other in different ways, with one providing what the other lacks or hasn't gone into as fully.

The serious practitioner would be unwise to overlook Armstrong. True, his is an early book and we know more about the actual constituents of urine and how it does its work today. But he was a unique character, and in his own way he was a very wise man, and I think he will always have a lot to teach us all.

This is perhaps the best book on herbal medicine I have ever read. Tierra covers not only the botanical and therapeutic properties of herbs, he shows with great clarity how they fit into the wider context of holistic healing. His integration of traditional Western herbalism with Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine--and he is a master of all three--justifies his proprietary name of "Planetary Medicine."

I am a midwifery student just getting into herbalism. My best friend is an herbalist, so I knew a little bit going in. This book is a fantastic introduction. The basics are laid out in a really straight-forward and helpful manner. Once you start getting comfortable with it, the reference bit is fantastic for quickly finding things. Michael Tierra does a fantastic job of walking the line between mysticism and science. He provides enough of the physical workings of the herbs to satisfy a rational mind, but doesn't lose track of the spiritual connection.

This book is an excellent staple to understanding the basic properties of herbs, their energy (cool or warm) and what systems are affected. The definitions of herbal properties were clear and concise (alteratives, diuretics, etc.) The section on diagnosis and treatment listed Yin and Yang conditions and how to apply Yin/Yang theory to herbal medicine. This was helpful in understanding the energy of a plant. Both Western and Oriental herbs are listed in seperate sections and is fairly extensive. Most dosage recommendations, however, are listed in tincture or infusion form with little information on application through "00" or "0" capsules. In the Treatments for Specific Ailments section, the ailments are generalized like menstrual cramps, colds, constipation, coughs and sore throats, etc. While a very good basic foundation it does not elaborate on the different symptoms, for example, of a cold. Do they need a respiratory relaxant or stimulant, a demulcent or an anticatarrhal? Many of the remedies are in infusion or decoction form which is not practical for someone to have dry herbs in bulk to prepare this recommended blend. Also for client compliancy it is not realistic. The last chapter on magnetic therapy, while highly informative, has no place in an herbal resource book. I found this book to be in an easy to read format and a valuable basic resource book for a begining to intermediate herbalist.

Diamond's approach is a unique, and combines philosophy with psychology and numerous other modalities. The writing ranges from the philosophical to practical suggestions and it has been a great inspiration to me in using music to enhance my life. One wonderful aspect to his approach is that anybody can do it--it's all about intention, not technique.

An outstanding book for discoverying and understanding the power and spirit of a pulsing, steady beat. As a frustrated Drummer trying to get a workout, I found this book in my search to understand and explain the hypnotic rhythm created by speed bag punching, and this book enlightened me to several reasons that I (and others I teach) are so drawn to the pulsing bag beat. This book simply explains why what makes the "beat go on" inside us all. This was a refreshing read for a long time drummer.

I love this book. There are a number of brief papers which discuss important ideas and concepts, but my favorites are the little poems, or aphorisms. Maybe two or three to a page, they conjure up images, pose questions or set in motion trains of thought that really get to the heart of why the creative arts are so important to our life, health and general well-being.
This is a book that can be read over and over again - each time revealing something new.

This set of CD's speak of such a deep truth. I myself had gone through a healing of an old wound before I knew about Ms. Myss. While listening to the seminar I felt like I was listening her talk about a play- by- play on my life! Amazing! Even though her tone can be negative at times in other lectures, in comparison, this work felt like I was listening to a wise, compassionate soul, who wasn't afraid to tell it like it is. I truly enjoyed my first Myss experience! I appreciate her brutal honesty, I am thankful for her work and look forward to learning more from her.

This 2 CD set was a live lecture. From the beginning of the lecture, it grabbed my attention! The thing that I liked the best is the Ms. Myss is so direct! She gives excellent examples to show her point when she tells of past readings she did for people and how the body, mind and soul work together. She bought up many points that I never thought of before and I felt MANY "Ah Ha" moments when the light bulbs went off in my brain and I really understood what she was teaching. In fact, I cheered a few times while I listened to each CD.
****NOTE: The best part of this CD set is the finale on CD 2. The last segment, Ms Myss reads a number of great questions about healing and the soul (really, really good questions)--her answers are so direct. In fact, for me, when I listened, I took certain things that she said into my heart and my soul and they are now a wonderful healing balm. This set for me has been wonderful for my body, mind and soul. I intend to listen to this set over and over again!

This fabulous lifesaving approach to healing can, and will, bring many people out of the virtual dark ,allowing them to take charge of their lives in a victom free environment, whereby they will emerge into a wholesome and responsible lifestyle, allowing their wildest dreams to be realized. The truth of our being cannot be found in a simple pill injested from the outer realm, as it is indeed an inner journey which must be embarked upon in order to heal completely. Horay for Caroline Myss, we need more brave sorts like her integrating into the medical field to plant seeds of change that will aid all concerned. This book is a joy, and I highly recommend her other books as major tools of self restoration. Medical Intuition and Healing
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2006-04-11
In Why People Don't Heal And How They Can, Myss explains how our biography becomes our biology. Our bodies contain energy data banks, known as chakras, that manage the flow of our life force. Every thought, belief, memory, and inspiration is recorded in our bodies. As a medical intuitive, Myss is able to "see" inside an individual's body and discern illness and its cause. Over the years, she discovered that many illnesses are connected to thoughts, emotions, and memories that have "hooked" our energy, keeping our precious life force in the past. We get a certain amount of life force, or personal power, for every day that we live. If we spend 80% of our energy in our history--hooked by emotional wounds, bad relationships, negative attitudes, judgmentalism, and unforgiveness--then we go into energetic "debt". Not having enough energy for the present moment (because of being stuck in the past), our body has to take a "loan" from someplace. Woundology, a term Myss has coined, is being stuck in the wounds of the past, defining yourself by your wounds, and using wounds as form of "street currency" to manipulate others. Woundology and energetic debt takes energy out of your cell tissues, and this can lead to illness.

In addition to explaining each of the 7 energetic data banks of our bodies, Myss covers:

*Consequences of negative energy
*Finding the strength to heal
*Getting your spirit back
*The importance of forgiveness
*Fear of change
*5 central myths that prevent healing
*Steps to heal
*Saving your spirit

You won't be bored with this CD, because Myss weaves personal stories throughout her teaching to illustrate these powerful truths. One amazing story is that of artist David Chethlahe Paladin. He was a Navajo who endured great cruelty by the Nazis, including having his feet nailed to the floor. Myss met Chethlahe personally before he died, and shares how the power of forgiveness brought his spirit back...and ultimately, healed his crippled body.

Finally, someone has put together a handsome (very!) and lively collection of good-tasting, easy-to-make beverages, both hot and cold, that keep you healthy when you are, and help get you back to health when you're not. Cold remedies, sore throat elixirs, aphrodisiacs, you name it, it's here. I found the few exotic Chinese and other herbs I needed at my local health food store. Also, I learned alot about old folk healing traditions while I read the informative introductions over a few herbal tisanes she included. You haven't sipped warm lemon verbana? It's the best! Thanks, Bonnie. And why Amazon listed you with Cold Mountain and A Man In Full remains a lovely computer joke on us all since these beverages leave you feeling neither chilly or overstuffed.

For such a small book (120p) I learned a lot. I am big on herbals for pleasure and medicine, but I learned a few tricks and some nice new recipies. If you like herbals, you probably know that chamomile tea calms nerves and pepperment is good for the heart and digestion; this nice little book goes a step beyond the typical things most herbal-enthusiasts know. I loved the Boullion au Herbes and the text with it, and the live culture tonic was facinating to me. The pictures are beautiful and sublte and soothing. The recipies are helpful and uplifting. The author exudes a pleasant sense which translates well into caring knowledge. In short, a gentle, helpful book worth having in your collection that I think a person would often refer to when needing an herbal uplift.

I think it was wonderful.

Finally, someone has put together a handsome (very!) and lively collection of good-tasting, easy-to-make beverages, both hot and cold, that keep you healthy when you are, and help get you back to health when you're not. Although not a spiritualist, I found myself immersed in the quiet, calm voice of Harry Uhane Jim, as reported by Garnette Arledge. Kahuna Harry shares the secret teachings of his Hawaiian heritage, now in danger of being lost. Of special resonance to me was the principle of "compassionate disengagement." For Harry, genuine healing calls on the presence of the Light Within to reflect energy so as to generate the other person's sovereignty. That sounds right to me.

Aloha! As the editor of the Bishop Museum book on lomilomi and of Hawaiian Massage Lomilomi: Sacred Touch of Aloha I am happy to see a new book on this tradition. Although the Hawaiian proverb says, "All wisdom is not taught in one school," all authentic lomilomi practitioners live aloha and give aloha. This is also the way of Harry Uhane Jim.

Harry is native Hawaiian, and his wife is the granddaughter of Kahuna Papa Bray, one of the first Hawaiians to teach Huna. This book is filled with Huna concepts and will be treasured by Huna people. Those who believe Huna is not Hawaiian will still find nuggets of traditional practice, and his stories growing up on Kauai are wonderful glimpses into small kid time. His lineage is the Manoi and Kaimikaua families, and he learned from Auntie Rev. Mary, a minister in Kapaia on Kauai.

The book focuses on philosophy and personal stories, briefly describing a few treatment protocols. Harry says he gives Temple Lomilomi but it is quite different from what is described in Nancy Kahalewai's book, Hawaiian Lomilomi: Big Island Massage. The receiver is fully clothed and focuses on breathing. The giver mostly uses elbows. The work is not just physical but also verbal. Though he doesn't call it ho'oponopono, he describes a process of letting go of the past. The book includes heart-warming stories from people who have been healed by Harry's work.

Harry has a creative approach to the Hawaiian language and is not constrained by the Pukui Dictionary. Native Hawaiian scholars who are dedicated to perpetuating their language and who are deeply aware of its esoteric subtleties will disagree with the rationale for many of his spellings and definitions. There are some factual errors about place names and history, and some of his interpretations seem like New Age flights of fancy, but some of the more far-out ideas are actually documented historically. For example, across all the islands the Pleiades are considered the ancestral home, as Harry relates.

In some of the marketing, Harry is referred to as "the last lomilomi kahuna" but the book makes clear he is only the last of his family's lineage. He is not the last in existence. They may not call themselves "kahuna," but there are masters practicing openly today, and others who quietly keep their lomilomi in the 'ohana or family.

I give 5 stars because this book is filled with aloha spirit, and is an authentic contribution to the literature reflecting the diversity of native practice. I hope it inspires others to document their family lineages. This is now only the third book on lomilomi (I'm publishing a fourth in October 2007). The person with a genuine heart and sincere desire to learn about Hawaiian traditions should read all four books to begin to understand the diversity of lomilomi, and the complexity of Hawaiian spirituality.

From the moment I started reading Wise Secrets of Aloha, I could feel the sacred beauty of Hawaii and wanted to go there immediately! (I never had that pull before.) Thanks to Garnette Arledge's exquisite writing, I could feel the fragrant breezes, the ocean, the sunlight and all the lushness and loving energy that permeate the atmosphere there. And then we meet Harry Uhane Jim who so generously shares his delightful spirit and the healing messages and energies of Lomilomi. This book is a great blessing to our planet. It teaches us. It heals us. I'll be forever grateful to Kahuna Harry for allowing these sacred and invaluable teachings to emerge into the world market; and to Garnette Arledge whose deep sensitivity to the essence of this work and prodigious literary skills make her the perfect author of this gem. May it heal millions.

Outstanding! I couldn't stop reading it from cover to cover, just for the pleasure of discovering what information and solutions would come next. I tried the short yoga routine when I had a major tension headache building and had complete and immediate relief, plus my headache didn't reappear hours later as it can when taking pills. The photos took me step by step with excellent guidelines. Now I keep the book handy, and have put away my bottle of Advil. I'm thrilled I don't have to be dependant on pills!
This book is very well written, and has lots of photos so it's easy to follow and understand. Here is a great blend of traditional medicine and easy yoga postures and techniques to prevent and relieve headaches. The medical information is thorough, yet nicely written for the layperson. The medical treatments transition beautifully to prevention and remedies through yoga. The postures are fabulous, too, just for relieving neck and shoulder tension and feeling more calm. I'm sold! A longer, daily routine is also offered for people who suffer from migraines and frequent headaches.
Now I don't have to mask symptoms by taking pills, and can go right to the source of the problem -- in 5-10 minutes. A treasure of a book!

I am a frequent sufferer of both tension-type headaches and migraines, and I also practice yoga several times per week. This attractive little square book provides an easy to follow yoga stretching routine that is appropriate for anyone, even those with no prior exposure to yoga.

The book begins with some basic information about headaches, including distinguishing between tension-type headaches and migraines and reviewing common causes of headaches. This material is presented in a simple, easy-to-read format, although it will probably already be familiar to those who have done prior research into their headaches. The authors then move into an overview of Ananda yoga, a copyrighted style which basically combines traditional yoga postures with positive affirmations.

Next come the yoga routines themselves. The book presents several options, including the Main Routine, a 20-minute daily practice to help prevent headaches, and the Intervention Routine, which can be used to decrease the discomfort from certain types of headaches in progress. The Main Routine consists of 15 total exercises which vary from standing in correct posture, yogic breathing, arm stretches, and neck rolls to seated and lying stretches. Exercises 9-15 include a simple affirmation such as 'I relax from outer involvement into my inner haven of peace.' The only prop required is a blanket; a strap is optional for some of the poses. An additional chapter suggests more challenging postures such as ear-closing pose, shoulderstand, and plow for once you are ready to expand your daily practice. The Intervention Routine includes 5 exercises from the Main routine plus yogic breath and relaxation postures. Finally, the book ends with a review of other options for headache treatments, including medications.

These simple stretching routines will definitely help you to release tension from your muscles while relaxing your body and mind. Since I already practice yoga, I don't plan to do the entire routine daily, but I'm confident that adding these simple postures will have a positive impact on my headaches. This is an excellent resource for those who prefer a more wellness-focused model to traditional medical treatment.
