"How Can I Heal What Hurts?," Volume II of Dr. Benor's "Wholistic Healing and Bioenergies" is very important for those who wish to know more about alternatives to today's medicine. With the cost of healthcare, lack of services and insurance, this book is filled with a variety of alternative approaches to make you feel better.

An excellent point Dr. Benor makes in the beginning of his book is that wholistic healing helps one understand the meaning of illness. To understand illness you must be aware of what is going on physically as well as be in tune with your environment. He relates that many times we only tune into the physical symptoms and go to doctor's to get that fixed, when instead we should be looking at what might be causing these symptoms.

In Chapter 1, the author discusses several factors that have an impact on our health such as stress, personalities, and environment. He continues in this chapter to discuss how each impact individuals that often result in emotional distress, psychological concerns and body systems that get out of sync. Also provided in this chapter is the Life Events Questionnaire, which will indicate stressors in one's life.

Throughout the book, the author explains various types of therapy that can help individuals become more knowledgeable about their selves, as well as gives guidance on making sure that any healing process you undertake should be done with someone who is expertly trained in the field. He provides examples of case studies in each chapter along with researched support.

In addition, he provides readers with self-healing approaches and exercises in the latter part of the book. The reviewer found this book to be very informative and clearly written, with many `use caution' sentences. If you have ever wondered about self-healing or CAM therapies "How Can I Heal What Hurts?" by Daniel J. Benor, M.D., is one you must have.

A true review of this book would take many pages. This is unequivocally the encyclopedia of evidence for self-healing, a port for holistic, complementary, and alternative medicine approaches, and a look at an overview of subtle energy, especially looking at the human energy field and environmental electromagnetic energy, cosmos-biology and even astrology. In his earlier book, Dr. Benor summarized almost as extensively as in the current book, an extensive body of research confirming claims by spiritual healers that they can "effect improvements in the health of the healees who flock to them, suffering from all the ailments known to human kind." This book in his Healing Research series continues to address the question, "How does healing work?" I have never seen a more concise but adequate definition of personality disorders, neuroses, and psychoses. The book is worthwhile just from that point of view alone. There is an adequate discussion of physical symptoms addressed by psychotherapy, as well as by bodywork and by bioenergy therapy. There is a good overview of psychological conditioning and behavioral therapy. Body/mind therapy, spiritual healing, hypnosis, biofeedback, transpersonal psychology, and even spontaneous remissions are addressed. The emphasis is very much on the fact that "--The world is not all in the mind. It would be more accurate to suggest that the mind is all in the world. That is part of the world, in fact, because we are intimately involved." Lyle Watson

Dr. Benor, a holistic psychiatrist, has compiled a comprehensive overview of the field of holistic health and the theories and research available on these topics. This book is timely and full of excellent analysis and references. Benor has done an impressive job of integrating information and covering a wide range of information to educate readers thoroughly about the topic. This book is worthwhile for all healing professional as well as laypersons seeking information and resources. This edition is the version of Consciousness, Bioenergy and Healing intended for the general public, although it appears to be primarily the same as the professional oriented version, just a bit less detailed in research documentation. It is good to see that this author is publishing books on an ongoing basis to keep up with developments in the ever-expanding holistic healing domain.

Through the author's own experience, she talks about her divorce and what she learned to help her get through this startling and traumatic time. Divorce is never easy, especially when it comes as a surprise.

Often we give up our careers and goals to the wishes of our partner; we have no job skills and don't even know where to start to get back on our feet. We find that we have few friends we can count on during this time. Then we have the difficult task of telling our children what is going on. Tammy Lynn was able to do this through the help of very close friends. After being out of work for some time, she found she needed to enter the job market once again.

Even though we go through denial, anger and maybe revenge, Tammy Lynn lets us know that those feelings can only hurt us and keep us from moving on. She has provided examples of how she was able to move on and shares them with the readers in an encouraging format.

"How to Heal Your Heart and Soul From Divorce" by Tammy Lynn is a wonderful, encouraging read from a mother of three.

Written by health services administration expert and survivor of divorce Tammy Lynn, How to Heal Your Heart and Soul From Divorce: A Quick, Easy to Read Guide to Healing is an intensely personal journey about the heart-wrenching pain that divorce brings, and strategies to survive, cope, and transform oneself. Lynn allows readers to see into the most private corners of her heart, recounting in detail the difficult and traumatic end to her marriage; this narrative of her personal experience runs throughout the entire book. Chapters discuss the invaluable treasure that is the support of friends and family, key insights into human emotional views and failings, and especially stress the importance of getting professional help immediately should one's thoughts turn self-destructive for an extended period of time. Although How to Heal Your Heart and Soul From Divorce is brief, it is sure to prove a comfort for anyone suffering from the death of their marriage.

This book is a gem of simplicity and usefulness. It integrates anatomy, myofascial techniques, holistic thinking and traditional Chinese medicine meridien theory and also provides simple stretching and strengthening exercises to help patients move from pain to recovery. It's beautifully designed and illustrated; I especially love the calligraphic drawings of the exercises. As a massage therapist, I can say that it is now one of my favorite reference books.

This book is a beautifully written chronicle of one man's journey into the Peruvian Amazon in search of healing. It is familiar territory for me, both the outside environment and the incredibly rich psychic landscapes the author describes so well. Robert Tindall has the gift of being able to describe in intimate detail what is often indescribable. When people ask me about ayahuasca and shamanism, I find it very difficult to describe. Now I can simply point to this beautiful book for the best verbal painting that I have read of something that transcends words. I highly recommend this book not only to experienced psychonauts but also to those who are curious about ayahuasca and/or healing the spirit.

I found this to be the combination of an autobiographical sketch of a seeker's journey, an inside view of Amazonian curandismo, and a touching love story as well. It happens that I know Robert and Susana and they're sweet and dedicated folks. So naturally the love story part was more meaningful for me, but I think it would be attractive to anyone. I am also a graduate student focused on related studies (in fact Susana just graduated from my department), so naturally I am interested in the explication of curandismo; and I am also a seeker so I resonate with the trials and tribulations that Robert describes. Even with my special interests, I think I can safely say that the book is a well-written, personal story which should prove engaging material for many. It is scientific without being overly technical, and Robert is careful to confess his personal biases so it is scholarly without being pedantic. I found it a very human story.

There are a lot of books about Ayuaska, but this one is different from the rest. It is not an after-the-fact intellectual Ayuaska tourism dissection. With a captivating writing system, Tindall shares his experiences in a non-judgmental way. A powerful page turner.

This book features a powerful tour through the wondrous caverns of the entheogenic, visionary landscape. It delightfully captures one man's amazing journey of mind, heart and soul as he travels through foreign lands in pursuit of higher knowledge. I was captivated by the extraordinary insights and intense self-analyzing that keep the reader hypnotized and enriched throughout the process. There are vivid, engaging stories of environmentalism and stories of love. He recalls interesting parables and dabbles in some of the world's greatest offerings in the domains of literature, science and religion. He ties them into his personal experience with originality and vivacity. Excitement abounds in this work!

This highly colorful and enlightening book will bring your spirit higher and take you into rich, expanded territories of thought. It will obliterate close-mindedness and open your eyes to a whole new world of thinking and feeling about the world around you - and the world within.

The unique love story that evolves adds a poignant touch. Also, I enjoyed the heartfelt memories of his special feline.

Every chapter stimulates the reader to question ideas of philosophy, psychology, metaphysics and hedonism. You might even salivate as you turn the pages.

I invite you to sink your mind into one of the most delectable and rapturous soul-twisters I have read in quite a while. It is completely worth the effort and will leave you permanently changed.

My interest in oriental medicine is serious and long-standing, although I have not had the chance to study formally at an established school. Ancient texts are seldom available in translation and can be extremely difficult to understand when they are available. Many of the more modern texts are quite dogmatic. Like second-rate cookbooks, they may give varying results for the home cook. Shudo Denmei's book is a wonderful gateway. It gives a very understandable "big picture" view of acupuncture as it developed from its origins to the present time. It gives extremely practical ways for a student to begin both study and early clinical experience. Without translation from theory to actual practice, no such book is worth anything. This book is the most practical I have seen at making this transition to clinical experience possible. So, this is a wonderful place to begin. On the other hand, the author also outlines very clearly at least one respectable path to mastery of the higher complexities of acupuncture practice. The text can, then, guide a person through long stages of improving practice. There are other wonderful books (consider, as an example, Dr. Manaka's book), but I know of no other text that is nearly as helpful or as practical, particularly for a person like me. I have great desire, but I don't catch on easily. Thanks to the author.

This book is the best of all of the books written already by this great master of "Meridian Therapy", Shudo Denmei. This book is extraordinary and indispensable to all and any acupunturista, be him linked to the acupuncture Chinese, Japanese or western. This book is of great aid not just in the diagnosis, as well as in the treatment of the disturbances of the meridians. And their teachings will be of great aid, as it is it for me, in the diagnosis and treatment of at least 80% of the treatable diseases with the acupuncture. Nobody in healthy conscience can stop reading, to study, to dialogue, to discuss and to share the rich information of the same with other work friends. Certainly, well practiced these techniques of the book, his/her performance as acupunturist will be said: before and after Shudo Denmei!

During a Drugs and Society class at Northeastern University, my professor recommended this book as extra reading. The book ends all myths and disputes in regards to marijuana, and raises some serious questions about America's drug policies. Why would a substance that has been around before the age of men be illegal? It is because the synthetic drug manufactures cannot make any money off of it. What happened in 1937 that caused the U.S to condemn use of marijuana and prohibit it? Read the book, and then truly ask yourself how democratic the U.S really is.

This book is an excellent resource and the techniques within are commonly used within the physical therapy arena. MET, although not a panacea, is a valuable tool that should be included within a comprehensive treatment plan for numerous neuromusculoskeletal conditions. To the layperson; this isn't a book to be bought for self-treatment nor for trying out on family members. Seek advice only from a qualified physician (MD, DO) and then, if the physician deems outpatient therapy is an option for your care, inquire with your physical therapist about muscle energy techniques as part of your treatment plan.

This is a well written, clear book, but as a massage therapist I found there was a steep learning curve for osteopathic theory and jargon. It took a lot of time to read through to find out that the techniques used were actually very similar to ones I had already learnt, just with a much bigger physiological theory base behind them. Also, it is coming from the perspective of osteo/chiro where apparently they always tend to do manipulations, not massage, so a lot of time is spent on the apparently revolutionary viewpoint that working on muscles helps pain and dysfunction. Duh!

In short, a great book for osteos, but not so great for massage therapists.

The techniques are well explained and relatively easy to apply. What's more they are safe, as well as beautifully effective. This is the best book I've come across for introducing a novice to the concepts and practice of MET. Chaitow's other books tend to go into very minute detail about the nervous system component of these techniques. This book is very well ordered and the assessments and techniques don't get lost in the minutae. HIs very clear presentation of the far-reaching effects of dysfunction in one part of the body is excellent. If you are interested in these techniques, this is the book! You can then follow up with his other books on the subject, especially Soft Tissue Manipulations. I'm using this book in a medical massage program in which I am an instructor.

I have to say that this book impacted me more than any other book on alternative cancer treatments -- and I've read scores of them. Richard Walters has done an excellent job of researching and presenting the histories and theories of most of the approaches you will ever hear about in your search for answers. And the way he presents the material is exciting and easy-to-understand. I take my hat off to this author for the gift of information he has given the world in such a well-written fashion. He may not present a few of the more recently developed cancer approaches, such as Poly-MVA or Protocel, but his chapters on many other current therapies such as Burzynski's antineoplastons, Hydrazine Sulfate, DMSO, the Gerson Therapy, 714X, and Iscador (what Suzanne Somers used), among others, are truly award-winning.

For anyone wanting an in-depth understanding and overview of alternative cancer therapies up to recent years, this book is a must-read!

You will find accurate information on how it evolved and how, in many cases, it has been suppressed by the orthodox cancer "establishment." You will even find some resources to contact about it.

The major problem is that this book was published in 1993. The Internet had not been born. Not a single web site is cited in this book. In contrast, my book, printed 10 years later, lists 137 useful web sites fot the cancer patient, selected from among the thousands of candidates. My free biweekly newsletters cite additional helpful web sites in every edition.

Use this book for its purpose -- researching the background on a particular therapy. Don't rely on it for up-to-date information.

Excellent book. Easy to understand. Covers the alternatives thoroughly and objectively. Gives references and contacts. I'm a visiting nurse and I'll be sharing this book with my patients. I wish I could buy fifty of them to give to people.

Got cancer like me? Fight and don't ever give up...no matter what. Read the "conclusion" first of this fine work. Then read the rest. When you do you'll save yourself. One of the best books on fighting cancer I've read and I've read many in my fight. The author did a through and splendid job. Every cancer patient should be given this book by their doctor, but don't count on it...this has everything your doctor doesn't want you to know.

Tick's work is leading edge on turning healing back to the heart/mind/body connection. He not only gives the historical background to substantiate using this method, he has practical approaches to understanding the messages from the soul.
It should be a mandatory read for all allopathic doctors to help break us out of the mechanistic/drug treatment system. It is time for individuals to seek out and restore our healing dreams. Excellent book - best on the subject that I have found.

Enter the Ancient Abode of a Healing Tradition

For two thousand years, temples dedicated to Asklepios were active in all the Mediterranean world. Dreamwork was at the center of these places of healing. Flocks of people would come to the sacred premises, the most famous one being at Epidauros, in the Peloponnese, to sleep in their rooms and receive guidance from the God of Healing. His messages would then be interpreted by priests. Like Jesus, Asklepios was half-man, half-divine, he strolled around in sandals, delivering a message of healing and performing miracles. In spite of his resemblance to the Christian Savior, asklepian temples were to be destroyed after the Nicean Creed edicted by the roman emperor Constantine in 325 of our era.

The Practice of Dream Healing is an accessible account of the dreaming tradition of the Mediterranean world at a time in history that was rich with mysteries. Edward Tick makes us visit one after the other the asklepian temples and describes their histories and their practices through the two thousand years the dreaming tradition was alive.

The last part of the book is a modern pilgrimage through the asklepian temples and the description of a personal spiritual awakening to their power. The author is a transpersonal psychotherapist and his anecdotes of healing sheds light on how the ancient dreaming tradition of Asklepios can be incorporated in our times.

This is a very well-written book even if scholarly and of particular interest to people involved in dreamwork or passionate with ancient history.

What I found most interesting about this book was its fascinating combination of material associated with travel writing, in this case on Greece, and its integration with a discussion of the relationship between ancient Greek mythology and contemporary healing practices. The effort to combine those two different genres is quite unusual and made the book an especially interesting "read."

I've read a lot of books in the area of archetypal psychology. This is a great one. Asklepios is a fascinating figure (note: his emblem is usually one snake around a stick. Mercury--god of commerce among other things-- has two snakes. This difference is potentially tellng in and of itself, but another story) What struck me is how prevelant a god and healer Asklepios was at one time. In this current culture, dreamwork still has a tinge of being somewhat marginal to health and even slightly indulgent. Tick successfully describes how this was not always the case. Previously, dream visions were primary, with the medical applications an important secondary process. Speaking of the medical aspect of Asklepios's worship, I found it interesting how modern objective medicine originally found its support in Asklepian temples.
Tick combines his knowledge of Greek history with his psychological practice. The descriptions of his travels in Greece and the pilgrimmages he leads really show the logistics and the ups and downs of being a modern seeker. While reading the book, I started to get a little bored with the drawn out historical chapters, but I must say, in retrospect, that they are essential groundwork to the personal stories and experiences that follow. In general, this is a very rewarding book.

I give this book five stars, and not because I am quoted in it. In _The Practice of Dream Healing: Bringing Ancient Greek Mysteries into Modern Medicine_, Dr. Edward Tick takes us on a journey-literally and figuratively. Mixing travelogue, psychotherapy, and mythology, Tick's book brings us to ancient Greek, where Asklepios, the ancient Greek god of healing, was believed to have worked through dreams. _The Practice of Dream Healing_ is in fact a "spiritual" critique of the entire medical profession as it has evolved in a society dominated by scientific and technological thinking.

This book is the culmination of years of psychologically counseling patients, and years of traveling to Greece with patients and with friends to explore and seek solace in the hot dust of Athens, the cool caves of Elysium, the cutting mountains of Crete. A highly skilled travel writer who has written several pieces for _The New York Times_, Dr. Tick has authored a book that is learned yet wholly accessible. The reader is a valued member of the group, and will find many unexpected turns and interesting "sites"-psychological, mythological, historical, geographical, religious-along the way.

This book is a valuable reference tool for those planning to teach about Reiki. Something about the way that Ellyard writes strikes a cord with me; it rings true. This book is a bit advanced for beginners. I would recommend it for master teachers, rather than levels one and two. Ellyard writes from the point of view of a traditional Usui Reiki Master and a practicing Buddhist.

This is the most balanced and comprehensive book on Reiki I've ever read. The author presents a wide sweeping introduction on the various Reiki Lineages including the political dynamics undergirding the various splits along the way showing what happens when human ego enters the picture and the various polarities give rise to differences.

In Western Reiki, Takata Sensi is largely attributed with the dissemination in the West. The author asserts that Takata initiated 22 Masters who later met following her death and began to share stories of their training. What they discovered is dissimilarities with the information. They then tried to unify the system through consensus which further led them to elect a lineage holder. Mrs. Takada's granddaughter was elected but not without challenge. This led to a split in loyalties splitting Reiki further. But the author also notes and lists in his book numerous Reiki lineages.

What evolved in Reiki is not an uncommon outcome in many other forms of healing or martial arts. Take for example the split after Ida Rolf died leading to the formation of other lineages of Rolfing, or the split in Aikido following the death of O Sensi leading to further fragmentation in the art. These are but two small examples of the political underpinnings shaping original Art forms when human ego enters the picture.

As a Reiki practioner, I find it regrettable that various lineages hold that they represent the 'one' and 'ture' Reiki and that others are only flawed versions from the original root.

It is most likely that Dr. Usui taught people in different ways and perhaps added new components as he grew in the Art. If this is indeed the case, than all lineages contain some aspects of the truth of Reiki. What we need is a unified openness to abridge the various lineages to ascertain what is original with Usui for the sake of an integral approach.

I think the author brings sensitivity and insight in this regard.

Quite possibly one of the most informative and practical information guides out there regarding history, philosophy, application and technique, as well as, guidelines for how to market yourself utilizing this medium for self employment/strategies, that I have ever had the pleasure of borrowing. SO good I purchased my own personal copy as it was a MUST have for my energy work library.

Not only the perfect adddition to an existing Reiki Library, but something I plan on utilizing for new students by vitue of it's straightforward, no non-sense, easy to understand perspective regarding this age old healing technique.

Would recommend to anyone who's even interested or curious about Reiki.
