What I like well in this book is the numerous tables, the questionnaires and the lists that summarize the essential data in each chapter.
What I like most in this book is the emphasis on clinical signs and symptoms for the diagnosis of hormonal imbalance rather than the usual relying on lab test only.

The author is from the fourth generation in a family of physician specializing in hormones well before the term "Endocrinology" had been invented. His great-grandfather, Dr. Eugene Hertoghe has given his name to the "Sign of Hertoghe", the shorter eyebrows of people with hypothyroidy and his father, Dr. Jacques Hertoghe has introduced the now widely used 24 hours thyroid hormone test. The test much better correlates with the signs, symptoms and complaints of thyroid hormone utilization than the usual thyroid hormone blood tests.
With his seminars and publications the author is well in line with the tradition of his family.
This book is a major contribution to our understanding of hormonal processes. I recommend this book to every person (inclusive physicians) interested in learning more about the way hormones affect us in all the aspects of our existence.

If You Haven't Been Feeling Well & Don't Know Why, It May Be Whacked Out Hormones

I love how this book was written. Originally I set out to just do some learning on Bio-identical Hormones for a friend and found out that I may have issues with my own hormones.

He talks about what can happen to our bodies when our hormones are not balanced, and over the long-term, can lead to diseases.

The book is broken down into 4 major areas:
1. Hormones
2. Body
3. Mind
4. Hormone Solution

In Chapter 2 (which is a part of #1), he gives a quiz (Part I) on each of the 15 hormones he talks about in his book and the symptoms of deficiency. The hormones would be ACTH, Aldosterone, Calcitonin, Cortisol, DHEA, EPO, Estrogen, Growth Hormone, Insulin, Melatonin, Pregnenolone, Progesterone, Testosterone, Thyroid Hormones, and Vasopressin.

In Part II of the quiz, he quizzes your Energy, Sex, Sleep, Skin/Hair, Weight Control, Stress, Mood, Circulation (Heart & STroke), Joints, Bones, and Immune System.

It takes a bit to complete the full quiz, but well worth it. With the Part II stuff, he goes into further details about each of these.

In each of those sections, he'll talk about detecting & decoding one's deficiencies, how to eat to heal, the nutrients needed, supplementation, scientific evidence/studies, and concludes with summary of each of the 15 hormones that may impact that particular issue (i.e., weight issue).

For the Hormone Solution, he breaks this down into:
1. The hormone
2. Treatment
3. Recommended dosage & frequency
4. What they may be associated to in terms of impact with other hormones.

He has a couple pages for resources and 59 pages of references. WOW!!!

This book was very informative and the first book I read on hormones. I've since read several other books, but still like this one the best.

A good compliment to this book is Natural Hormone Balance for Women by Dr. Uzzi Reiss, who is a ob-gyn in Beverly Hills. He covers some other things Dr. Hertoghe doesn't.

Something I'd like to mention is I did go get a 24-hr urine analysis that looked at a number of the hormones mentioned in this book. His quiz made it fairly easy for me to have my doctor test for certain things and they were fairly close to being correct.

My naturopath has now given me some BIHs to help me rebalance those hormones I was deficient in. Am feeling so much better and this was about 3.5 weeks ago.

Comprehensive. Includes suggestions for communication with your doctor to request appropriate labs and prescriptions for bioidentical hormones to improve health, longevity and well being. Also includes dietary modifications to support a bioidentical hormone replacement protocol. Written by the top endocrinologist in the world. Very insightful, cutting edge knowledge.

A must have reference book - would be lost without it!

This book was required reading from an endocrinologist I was seeing and I'm so very glad that I read it cover to cover. I learned SO much about my hormone issues and was able to help figure out what was going on with my husband and his hormone issues. It made the remainder of his life bearable. I keep this book for reference and use it often. I bought and gave one to my primary care doctor and he said it has enlightened him on hormone issues with patients. We are so blessed that Dr. Thierry Hertoghe chose to share his knowledge with us to help as many people as possible to feel better and have quality of life. Best hormone book I have ever read!!

This book is clearly written. The author makes it possible for everyone to get a clue about which hormones might be missing in his/her body before visiting a health professional. Many health issues are covered with the specific hormonal deficienties. I found it very clarifying and it brought me a step forwards in my search for my lost health. I have read also the books of John R. Lee. The book of Thierry Hertoghe gives not so much information about what one can do self in comparison with the books of Lee on female issues.
in the meantime i go to his sister dr.Therese Hertoge for treatment, and i got much better.

With the growing interest in alternative - complementary therapies, hypnotherapy is increasingly being recognized as a compelling choice. Kevin Hogan is an important voice in defining methods which are respectful of the client, highly ethical, and effective. His voice is credible because of his own ethics and practice and the effectiveness of his work. It was my privilege to edit The New Hypnotherapy Handbook and to train with him in Minneapolis. I have the deepest respect for his knowledge and wisdom and the efforts he has made to develop and establish hypnotherapy as a viable, trustworthy intervention. It's an excellent resource!

If you are a hypnotherapist who wants to really help people create permanent change this book is a must - period.
I own and have read, highlighted and reread the original Hypnotherapy Handbook. The pages are tattered because the concepts keep displaying deeper levels of understanding each time I read it.
Wow, despite that, I have gleamed even more insights from reading this one.
As I said above, if you want to really help people, buy and study this book.

Basic and Advanced Hypnosis

Review Date: 2001-10-09
The New Hypnotherapy Handbook was one of my textbooks for Kevin Hogan's hypnosis certification training. I particularly liked this book because it offers a model of hypnotherapy, a number of useful scripts, and solutions to dealing with difficult problems in hypnosis.

First, the model. CARPETS is Hogan's anacronym for Case Analysis, Regression, Parts/Ego State, Time Track Therapy and Suggestive Therapeutics. The highlight of the model is the Time Track Component. Never have I seen such a beautiful piece of work in the field of hypnosis. What you learn is how to weave a clients past and future positive resources into their present day state of mind. This modality alone is worth the ... price of the book.

The discussion of ethical issues, case analysis and legal issues is first rate. The details of regression are sketchy at first but made clear later in the book when his co-authors give verbatim transcripts of their session work. The ego state therapy is better described in Ego States by Watkins, but the treatment is sufficient. The specialty chapters on Emergency Hypnosis, Past Life Regression and even UFO abductions are tantalizing and always prefaced with cautions of ethical use and careful handling of the client.

This book started off a bit clumsily and then by Chapter Two it was clear it was one of the finest books on hypnosis I have read.

The New Hypnotherapy Handbook is a wonderful book for the advanced beginner and the seasoned practitioner.

SIMPLY THE BEST!

As an Instructor of Hypnosis, I not only read this wonderful book, but it is also on my required reading list for my college students. Never before have I seen such a comprehensive text written on hypnotherapeutic practices that is so well written even one with no knowledge of Hypnotherapy can relate to it as well as understand the techniques. Hogan should be proud to accept his position beside such modern Hypnosis greats as such as Rossi, Cheek, and Erickson among others. The Time Track piece is simply amazing.

I recommended this book for a new hypnotist who recently joined my staff. She expressed feeling overwhelmed with all her new found knowledge and unsure of the theory behind some techniques.
This handbook covers a wide spectrum of techniques explained in concise and "user-friendly" templates and knew this was just the book she needed to pull together all her knowledge.
The part I found particularly useful was on Time Tack Therapy. I've learned it from other instructors, but never before had this therapy made as much sense as explained in this book
Definitely a must have for all new and experienced hypnotists or for anyone wanting to explore the mind body connection

Time to wake up and smell the additives

Reviewed by Vicki Landes for Reader Views (1/08)

What's on your plate these days? Caught up in the New Year's weight-loss-resolution craze? Substituting baked chicken for fried or opting for a healthy salad instead? Author Sandy Powers says it's just not enough! Amid that lower-cholesterol poultry and pile of innocent-looking veggies lurks a terror so offensive, you won't believe it's FDA-approved. Hormones, antibiotics, synthetic pesticides, irradiated components, genetically modified organisms, reprocessed sewage - and you kiss your mother with that mouth?

"Organic for Health" is a jarring look at what we eat everyday, even those fresh foods considered `healthy.' For those already knowledgeable in all things organic, it's a gentle reminder to stay on track. But for people like me, it's a horrifying glimpse into what my body's had to process over the years. Chronic health problems, low immunity, and even that invading cancer battling our systems make much more sense when Powers describes what all we eat in addition to our intended meals. Put down that fork and slowly step away...

Unlike health how-to books that rival the size of medical textbooks, "Organic for Health" is easily ingested in one sitting for quick application. Not only does Powers give you a well-organized down and dirty (literally) of non-organic foods, she starts you off on the right path with a mouth-watering variety of recipes as well as advice on transitioning your grocery shopping habits without breaking the bank. Further, she provides a thorough glossary for quick reference and additional sources for supplementary research.

Sandy Powers notes she is living proof that the switch to organic foods is life-altering. Faced with breast cancer and a required surgery, her situation was further compounded with risky liver problems. Now, she lives cancer-free and her liver is better than ever thanks to an organic lifestyle. With the number of health problems, costs of medical care and prescriptions growing at a staggering rate, most people can no longer avoid taking a serious look at what they eat and would benefit from Powers' example. Even healthy parents will find this book eye-opening. As a mother, I found that the most shocking information in "Organic for Health" is that children have a higher sensitivity to these food additives - measured and packaged with an adult's body in mind.

Genetically-altered additives, pesticides, antibiotics, and reprocessed sewage - and that's just breakfast! "Organic for Health" will convince even the most indifferent eater that organic foods are the way to optimal wellbeing.

Americans are being poisoned every day with food that has been approved by the United States Department of Agriculture. The USDA allows terrifying quantities of poisons and contaminants to remain inside the meat and produce that currently fills supermarket shelves. It is a legal practice, and Americans continue to believe the food supply is safe.

Sandy Powers' amazing recount of her battle with breast cancer is one that every American should take to heart. After the initial diagnosis, Powers was unable to have surgery to remove the tumor because the levels of enzymes in her liver were dangerously high, and surgery could cause total liver failure and death. Various tests could not explain the reason behind her illness. She went ahead with the risky surgery, but continued treatment could not be pursued due to the high levels of enzymes. Eventually, Powers decided to try an experiment on herself to heal her liver. She simply undertook an organic diet. It is probably no surprise that the change in diet restored her liver enzymes to healthy levels and positively affected her cholesterol, enabling her body to more effectively battle the cancer.

Powers' experience is the inspiration behind Organic for Health. As if her own story isn't convincing enough, she spends several chapters explaining how the food supply is processed and the dangerous (and disgusting) amounts of contaminants suppliers are allowed to ignore. She begins with "Hormones, Antibiotics, and E. coli," briefly covers the seafood industry, then provides some startling statistics on fertilizer and pesticides, including the "Dirty Dozen" most dangerous fruits and vegetables. The next few chapters follow a more positive note, listing specific foods that are rich in antioxidants, immune boosters, and phytonutrients (when purchased organically).

Possibly the most helpful chapter is one entitled "Useful Information," in which Powers provides the reader with tips for storing produce to ensure it gets used, given that organically grown food is often costly. The bulk of the book is made up of delicious recipes. The key to these recipes is that Powers has been able to find most of the ingredients in their organic forms, and most likely, the reader will be able to do the same. For those that may be intimidated by the whole process, the recipes are very simple, usually with only a few ingredients. This is truly back to basics cooking, proving we've strayed away from the wisdom of our ancestors with our current lifestyles.

The book closes with tips for growing fruits and vegetables, meditation, and a glossary of terms. There is a list of additional resources, but none of the organizations have websites listed--just addresses and phone numbers. Websites would have been helpful, because most people prefer email over snail mail these days. Regardless, Organic for Health provides an important introduction to the benefits of organic food.

Sandy Powers has created the type of book that will change lives. She approaches the subject matter from a basic, introductory standpoint. This allows any reader to ease into the idea of major dietary changes, progressing at a comfortable pace. If there was any doubt the US government allows profit to prevail over general well-being, Organic for Health will eliminate that doubt.

If you really want to know the kind of questions asked on the National Certification Examination get the following on amazon: "The Ulimate Study Guide for the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork: Key Review Questions and Answers" (Volume 1), (Volume 2), and (Volume 3). Each volume covers each section of the National Certification Examination so thoroughly and the questions really help you know which areas you are weak or strong in.

Creating Relationships with Plants
Helpful Votes: 49 out of 50 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-08
This accessible yet comprehensive book is a tremendous gift of both wisdom and practical application on how the universe actually works and how to tap in and play a part yourself. Plant Spirit Healing is about the difference between knowing about a plant (available through book learning and use) and experiencing its spirit - where you merge with it, communicate through an exchange of insights, and achieve a full and lasting relationship. This book benefits from Pam Montgomery having taught and honed this material many times. If you cannot take Montgomery's apprenticeship program and experience her own ebullient spirit, this book is the next best thing.

Emphasizing that each person's knowing and experience of different plants may be different in what is really a Both/And, rather than an Either/Or, universe, Montgomery guides you to find your own plant spirit guides appropriate for this time in your life journey. Chances are who they are will surprise you.

This remarkable book takes the reader on a journey from (possibly) skeptical interest in plant spirits, to plausible, to possible, to practical. At no point does the journey include religious overtones or spacey far-out suggestions.

Montgomery builds a foundation based on physical and energetic qualities of both people and plants. Each new parcel of knowledge is presented in a flowing sequence based upon previously explained information. The trip is full of "of course" moments where you recognize that you already knew what she is presenting, but perhaps did not know where to place it in your established body of knowledge. As much as anything this book greatly expands and updates your established body of knowledge.

Fine-tuning gathered from years of teaching workshops and apprentice programs has honed Montgomery's understanding of the pace and paths by which people can not only learn, but can experience and assimilate deeper knowledge. Her expertise allows her to lead the reader through these layers of knowing in the transparent, uncluttered, way that characterizes the best of guides.

The Theme is Relationships.
Despite years of loving plants, I would not have thought that there were so many ways to understand plants, or so many tools for deepening my relationships with them. Indeed, relationship is what this book is all about, including establishing, fostering, and nurturing actual relationships with plants. This includes being open, observant, respectful, and enjoying. It involves appreciating plants and learning from them and moving those relationships on to partnerships. This carries on the theme of Montgomery's previous book, Partner Earth (1997) in which she encourages humans to take responsibility and action to be co-creators and partners with Earth, rather than passive children of Mother Earth.

At one point in Plant Spirit Healing Pam likens establishing a new relationship with a plant to a relationship with a potential lover. Just think about that. It includes breath exchange, attention, respect. One is open, observant, eager to learn all one can about this person who suddenly seems to glow with light. One is gentle and respectful and wants to spend every available moment with the new love, gently growing knowledge and love and a shared history, exploring all facets and aspects of the beloved.

Organization and arrangement
The book's organization is clear and accessible. Different learning modes are accommodated as each chapter presents the material in three modes. Chapters begin with a journal entry from Montgomery's daily interactions with nature and how it feeds her developing wisdom. We catch a glimpse of her slipping into communication with plants and the landscape. Next, the bulk of the chapter is a descriptive exposition of the topic. This is followed by examples which illustrate the ideas and techniques just presented with experiences Montgomery has had with her clients, or that her students have experienced.

The book is divided into three parts, The Theoretical Basis for Plant Spirit Healing, The Practical Application of Plant Spirit Healing and Plant Allies, a section on specific plants. Christian Hummel recently wrote "We are living in a time when ancient principles that have been espoused for ages from Vedic texts to Native American philosophies are being validated by science - a meeting point between science and spirituality where these principles are being tested and proven to be true." [July 2007 Wisdom magazine p. 28 "Accessing the Creative Matrix: The Secret to Healing the Earth" ] Montgomery presents much of this material in Part One by distilling and presenting the essence of a large and varied body of new scientific information in an accessible format that relates to plant spirit and communication. She has gleaned knowledge from others - both ancient traditions and recent science - and incorporates it straightforwardly for easy absorption without being academic. Part Two is a practical journey where actually meeting and getting to know plants is facilitated with a range of different techniques. Part Three introduces the plants as their fully embodied selves giving a sense of the expansive beings they are.

Plant Spirit Healing teaches about how sprit moves in the world, thus bringing spirit into reality, instead of keeping it in the abstract realm of religion. We are given a handbook to understand the wonder of plants, and a guidebook of practical techniques and exercises to form personal, intimate, real relationships with plant beings whose importance, variety, beauty, gifts and outright wisdom are usually ignored. The result reminds me of my joy at the animal tracks revealed by the first snowfall in what has been a gray and lonely November landscape. The joyful feeling of not being alone. The deep knowledge that I share this landscape with other beings who are aware of themselves, who live full and interesting lives, and who are open to knowing me and interacting with me.

Plants have been calling to many of us for the past several decades. Chances are they are somehow calling you as well. This is a guidebook to answer that call, probably in a deeper way than you ever imagined. By the time you have read it you will have established relationships with plant beings, taken a deep journey and found missing parts of yourself.

This double CD is worth every cent! Bronwen Steine has captured the amazing power of Usui reiki with such gentleness and integrity of spirit. Her voice is beguiling, relaxing, uplifting and empowering. The profound stories relating to each of the five precepts are inspirational and read with such exquisite expressivity that they alone are worth buying the CD. I have already purchased most of Bronwen's meditations but I would implore anyone who is interested in or already working with Reiki or even just interested in improving their quality of life to do yourself a service by purchasing this CD. I heartily recommend this amazing CD to everyone.

Wonderful for anyone interested in the system of Reiki and improving your practice!

I really love this 2 disc set! Bronwen has an amazing voice, which instantly sets the mood for relaxation and meditation. I think anyone can benefit from these meditations. I had high expectations for this because I know the quality of products produced by The International House of Reiki and this lived up to all my expectations and more! You can't go wrong purchasing anything done by Bronwen and Frans Stiene and The International House of Reiki. Everything from the music, Bronwen's voice and the way the meditations are done are all wonderful for everyone from the beginner to the very experienced. I recommend this for someone just learning about the system of Reiki to an experienced teacher of the system of Reiki.

A 2-hour CD that outlines the path to balance and wholeness: what could be better?

Once again, the International House of Reiki has succeeded in creating a product that echoes the very system of Reiki itself: simple, yet profound; gentle, yet powerful. This CD focuses on the original practice of Reiki as a system for spiritual development. It is suitable for anyone wishing to learn more about the basics of Reiki as Usui originally taught.

With her wonderfully healing voice and energy, Bronwen guides us through introductions and meditations in both the foundations of the system and all 5 elements of the system of Reiki. By listening to this CD, anyone can find out more about the basics of Reiki as well as experience the energetic practice itself.

This CD is at once informative and experiential, empowering the listener to deepen his or her connection to the self-healing power within. You can feel your healing journey begin at the very first listen!

I have been very enthusiastically recommending this two volume CD set to all of my students. It is accessible to both the experienced practitioner and teacher - as well as to the person relatively new to Reiki - and it is a bargain as well.

It is evident from listening to the introductions and instructions given, that Bronwen Stiene is someone who not only commands an impressive amount of information about Reiki as it was originally practiced by Mikao Usui, but that she is a dedicated practitioner of this system as well. Reiki as taught by Usui, was meant to be first and foremost a spiritual practice - something that has not been generally emphasized in the West. Reiki as a spiritual practice is both complete and totally edifying and will change your life!

In addition, these CD's give every practitioner the basic tools to establish their own daily practice if they are looking for a way to do so.

Bronwen's voice is melodious, rich, soothing and captivating. Not every writer can adequately convey the beauty and eloquence of the written word to the spoken one - but she certainly knows how to do this. She is as engaging a speaker as she is a writer.

The written works by Frans and Bronwen Stiene are outstanding and the best references available in terms of the history and the practice of Reiki. I always tell my students that if they only have one Reiki book to buy - they should make it the Reiki Sourcebook. These Reiki Meditation CD's are a welcome accompaniment to their written body of work, and I hope to see more CD's released in the future!

Julia Carroll is the Reiki Master who initiated me into Reiki over fifteen years ago. Her powerful classes provided the foundation for my understanding the laws of healing that function on a non-physical level...and yet produce amazing physical results.

In this concise and well-documented handbook, Julia explains not only Reiki Touch, but introduces the newest members of the family of "energy/spiritual healing," Healing Touch and Therapeutic Touch. Both are credible additions to the family with solid medical credentials, impressive resumes, published articles in complementary and integrative medicine journals and leading-edge research.

For those of us wrestling with traditional medical systems and trying to establish the credibility of these new "old" modalities, this book is an outstanding tool to communicate "the facts" to those decision-makers needing proof, research and results. This book is "the blazing six-gun" you want to have by your side when preparing for those important meetings with traditional thinkers. It is also the guidebook you want to follow when building your own clinical trials in various non-traditional modalities..(See the section Research in Alternative Touch Therapies).

I especially enjoyed reading the curriculum and research associated with each modality and developed a greater appreciation of the similarities and differences between them. So often we alternative healing practitioners are asked to explain the differences between one system and another. This reference guide makes that easy.

Julia, thank you for once again telling the inspirational "story" of
Dr. Usui's life. We can never sufficiently honor the great ones who have blazed the trail for us. Their perserverance and humanity gives me courage on my own healing journey.

Finally, I appreciate the ethical codes so beautifully articulated by each modality. They serve as beacons of light in our relationship with clients and each other. They remind me of the importance of protecting both the spiritual roots and the physical methods of each of our disciplines.

Reiki Master Julia Carroll has done an exceptionally great work with co-authoring this book on Reiki with other healing modalities. She truly has a worthy book and I highly recommended it for those studing the healing arts. Having been in the nursing profession for over 45 years the research on the healing modalities will support that energy healing does happen for the non-believer. I encourage those new and us who have been in the profession to examine this book. You will not be disapponted.

In a world where tradition is becoming meaningless, Julia Carroll is the epitome of dedication and loyalty. Julia sets the standard not only for Reiki and Reiki Masters and healing therapy, but anyone could learn a lesson from this beautiful Being of Light.

I'm very excited to see REIKI TOUCH (R) TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY EDITION: PROFESSIONAL TOUCH MYSTERIES being released at this time as it coincides with the twenty-second anniversary of receiving my initiation into Reiki with Julia Carroll (I knew her then as Judy-Carol Stewart). Julia was Reiki before Reiki became "cool" and I am so honored and grateful to have learned this most beautiful healing art from her personally.

The new Reiki book is in all color, and has several co-authors and contains much valuable research. It is designed as a textbook and will be used in nursing schools and holistic touch therapy schools and is a MUST for any practitioner of the healing arts - be they mainstream or non-traditional, professionals or simply truth seekers.

It is only fitting that Julia's name be on this most excellent source of healing information. Julia Carroll will always be a prominent name in the history of Reiki and Touch Therapies of all descriptions... This book is well worth the investment.

Alice Fulks, LA Actor - "Transformed"
"I met Reiki Master Julia Carroll less than one year ago, and in that short span, my life has been transformed. I owe this transformation to Julia because it is she who taught me to honor the spirit and the divine light within each and every being.
Julia herself is a bright beaming light; she is a shining force who touches everyone she meets with compassion, respect and love.
In her new book, Reiki Touch Twentieth Anniversary Edition: Professional Touch Mysteries, Julia succinctly describes the origins, principles and practices of Reiki, an obscure and sacred practice now available to all. Added to that are the origins, principles and practices of Healing Touch, Therapeutic Touch, Aromatherapy & Massage and Spirituality & Meditation. A complete and necessary book, vital to humanity.
This book is essential and an asset to anyone interested in understanding the power of human healing potential and the freedom that touch therapies can bring to our bodies, minds, hearts and spirits."

This is a good book for beginners that teaches the basics of arrow making the traditional way. It also offers alternative ways using modern tools. If you are looking for the way a specific tribe/people made arrows then further research will be required as with any book on this subject. It does however give some detailed information on the arrow crafting techniques of some plains Indians.

Another book you don't loan out, you'll miss having it for reference.

It lists recipes for ailments, and companies where you can purchase the items needed in the mixes.

I had to buy more than one, one for loans, one for keeps.

The best advice is also given in this book, just because one mix worked for another, it may not be the same for you. We are all different, and so are the many different species of plants. So it doesn't just give you one recipe for one ailment, unlike so many other herbal books.

I personally know Lawerence and have had the pleasure of working and processing through a break through in Hawaii during Dr. Emoto's workshop. The book is in line with Lawerence's own personal vision, belief and as a seeker of what high vibration or truth is...his mission and the book will create a serene and positive outlook on everything life has brought and will bring.

I highly recommend this beautiful book for all ages and for anyone and hope that many will come across this book when the timing is right and feel compelled to not only own but to pass on the great message that can only bring more light and peace...
