Most Comprehensive Single Book Herbal I've Seen

I wholeheartedly agree with the other reviewers that this is a 5-star book and an important volume to include in your herbal library - or if you are looking for ONE herbal book, this is it.

Each entry has information on the history and lore of not only the herb, but even its name; where and how it grows, how to cultivate (that information is often left out of other books, which just tell you what part of the plant to use, now HOW to use them), and any supporting scientific evidence (or lack thereof).

The sections on geographic locations worldwide and their indiginous plants and cultural contributions to herbalism are unlike anything in any other herbal book I've seen. I could not put this one down, I turned each page with the same enthusiasm I'd have had for a suspense thriller, and this is a reference book, not something that would normally garner excited responses like that. Don't pass this one up!

There are so many herbal books on the market today that one could wonder about the need for yet another, even with the National Geographic branding attached to it promising quality - but DESK REFERENCE TO NATURE'S MEDICINE offers something different. It's put together not by a single person but by leading experts in the herbal medicine field, it packs in over 200 color photos, 150 botanical drawings and over 150 maps, and its alphabetical arrangement of therapeutical plants covers not just physical appearance and medicinal properties but geographic distribution, how it's harvested in used, and more. Nine essays provide an overview to world healing traditions while handy sidebars of detail pack in the history and cultural insights, making for a practical manual which is also a superb history.

This book is exceptional in that the author, Jane Alexander, has experienced all the different treatments for herself. This makes it much safer for anyone to use than most books of this genre. I recommend this book highly to anyone who wishes to get their health together. Mental, physical and spiritual balance can be achieved through following one of several detox plans offered by Jane Alexander in this excellent and highly readable book.

Uses logic to help you understand how simple it really is to detox. I have since tried to read other detox books, but can't finish them. Basically, she saves you from reading 10 sub-par detox books. I didn't lose much weight, but my clothes now fit me the way they were meant to fit, not just camoflauging problems. Thanks to her dietary suggestions, mental exercises, and at home spa-like treatments, I do feel like I've shed alot of negativity, emotional, and environmental toxins that had built up in my body. Other books don't treat you to the "total" package.

I've read so much hype about detoxing that it was really refreshing to read this book. It's clear, concise and authoritative. The author obviously knows exactly what she's talking about and doesn't throw in any trendy gimmicks or ridiculous claims. I followed her one-month plan and can honestly say I have never felt better in my life (at least not since I was a kid!!). It goes beyond the mere physical too but encourages you to look at your whole life - emotionally as well as physically. I de-cluttered and that made a huge difference. Well worth reading - and following!!

Tune Your Life with an Engaging Read

If it vibrates, it can be tuned. Everything is energy- violins, animals, people, potato chips, thoughts, feelings, and events. ~Deena Zalkind Spear

I have rarely enjoyed a book as much as "Ears of the Angels." From the start you can tell Deena Zalkind Spear is one of those writers who could write about anything and make the journey absolutely enjoyable. While she has a degree in neurobiology, her true love is making violins. In fact, she has been making violins for 30 plus years.

Deena Zalkind Spear has a super natural ability to make dull instruments come alive and her imaginative writing takes you into the esoteric intricacies of violin making. Although I knew very little about violin making, this entire book was enlightening from the spiritual perspective. She takes healing to new creative levels and her thoughts helped me understand why when you talk to certain friends your vibrational energy can be enhanced. Why do you feel so good around certain people and feel like you have to run from people who seem to be killing your spirit? This book explained it in ways I never thought any author could.

The author recounts her initial years of marriage with an undeniable sense of humor. Her wry wit and casual acceptance of fate explains the background to her craft. This book is for readers who know there is more to life than what meets the eyes. While many people experience unexplainable phenomena, they never explore them in depth. Deena Zalkind Pear takes her talents to new levels and invites us to take this fascinating journey into the unexplained.

A highly entertaining read even if you don't play the violin or make violins. Will be especially useful for students of the violin. If you love violin music, this book will show you how violins are made and repaired.

I just recieved my book yesterday, and read the entire book in about 6 hours, I could not put it down. While I do not play the violin or anyother instrument, the book provided much energy information that can be applied to those experienced, or seeking to become experienced with energy work. It allows you to understand that energy is not just for people, pets, plants, or anyother living being that we work at healing. It was totally fasinating to discover that this woman could not only tune up the owners of instruments all over the world distantly for distinguished orchestra members but their instruments at the same time. They really do have living energy just like everything else, and if this is of interest to you, I recommend you read the book, and take from it what you want, and explore the possiblities to expand your knowledge of just what is possible. I gave the book five stars!! Make it apart of your metaphysical library today, I feel you will find yourself referring to Deena's book often. Deena is clearly a very gifted and dedicated woman to her work not only with instruments themselves but in the healing arts. She also provides mulitple contacts that she herself uses personally in her own work that you may contact for any work you may need to have done in your own life, or the lives of another. Enjoy! Love and light, Sandy

Neurobiologist Deena Spear writes with candor and self-effacing humor in EARS OF THE ANGELS about how energy work can heal and transform violins, violas, cellos... and human beings. Spear's fascinating, detailed descriptions of violin enhancement began with physical techniques (such as tapping, blowing, and scraping), and moved into non-physical, hands-on and long-distance energetic techniques.

What sets EARS OF THE ANGELS apart from most other energetic healing books is the way it describes energetic acoustic principles that can heal both stringed instruments such as violins, and sentient beings such as humans. Spear includes delightful real-life stories from clients whose instruments have been tuned (and sometimes even glued) long-distance without any direct physical contact from Spear that clearly attest to the efficacy of her methods. She describes how her energy tuning work has helped pets become cancer-free, people become toxin-free, and significantly improved relationships.

Anyone interested in enhancing the sound of stringed instruments will find EARS OF THE ANGELS essential reading, as will everyone who wishes to discover more about the kinds of physical changes that are possible through conscious intention and energy field work. I give EARS OF THE ANGELS my highest recommendation!

This is an extraordinary book by an extraordinary person. Deena Spear completed her premedical studies in neurobiology but decided not to pursue a career as a physician. She unexpectedly found herself attracted to playing the violin (with very modest success), which led to a career as a luthier - building and repairing violins, violas and cellos with her teacher, who then became her husband.

Being something of a perfectionist, Deena was constantly seeking ways to improve the sound of the instruments they built and repaired. Through channeled guidance from master violin makers, she learned to shave minute bits from precise points on the instruments, significantly enhancing their sound.

Deena was also drawn to spiritual healing and graduated from the four-year Barbara Brennan School of Healing course. Her two interests merged when she discovered that she could tune the instruments mentally. Conversely, her studies of how to tune the instruments mentally enhanced her confidence and skills in offering distant healing.

After honing her healing skills with the same diligence she had applied to studying to enhance the sound of violins, Deena started teaching others both of these skills. She finds that the tuning of violins gives people confidence in their abilities to influence matter at a distance, which then helps them to believe they can send healing to people from a distance.
Deena's writing is punctuated with humorous observations and asides. Deena shares generously from her personal healing lessons.

Rarely do I find a book like this that is both rich in innovative lessons, reaffirming of healing wisdom and highly readable. I warmly recommend this book as being all of these.

Wow! Resonates so magnificently

What a fantastic journey into expanded consciousness! Deena Spear speaks with such down-to-earth candor, that one can't help but believe everything she describes. Not to mention that it totally concurs with Jane Roberts's and Machaelle Small Wright's books. A neurobiologist who studied with Jane Roberts and eventually became a luthier to very high level classical musicians (what an amazing career) and still talks of herself as if she's not very smart. Now I'm just realizing that perhaps with what SHE'S seen, she knows how much we ALL have to learn...

This book -- co-authored by Bastyr ND Nathen Gabriel (2000 grad.) -- is an excellent example of naturopathy's 'purposeful life spirit' / 'vital force spirit' sectarian premise.

And I quote, from the naturopathy chapter:

"naturopathic medicine is an integrative and vitalistic medical system [...] there are seven principles of modern naturopathy [...#2] respect the healing power of nature (vis medicatrix naturae). There is an innate healing force within all life that is always attempting to prevent and/or heal every possible illness [...a] 'life force' [...] naturopaths help their patients to optimize this innate force [p.119...] most medical systems in place before the rise of modern western medicine [...] were 'vitalistic' in nature, meaning that a spiritual 'vital force' or 'life force' was believed to be both the source of existence and the essential healing force for every person. Ayurveda's 'prana,' Chinese medicine's 'chi,' and Hippocrates' 'humours' are all versions of the vital force [p.120]."

I highly recommend this chapter for anyone interested the the central article of faith of in this form of sectarian medicine.

As a layperson who happens to work in a holistic environment, i found this book to be exceptionally well-researched and comprehensive. I can imagine all the students out there getting really excited reading this book and perhaps finding some clarity as to their actual specialty. It's truly inspiring to read about all the different, effective modalities one can choose from, or simply add to their knowledge database. Really well organized and easy to read.

Must-Have Student Reference and Career Guide

I'm an undergrad student tentatively on the `pre-med track' but feeling somewhat dissatisfied with the conventional MD route, and have been looking to explore other areas of healing modalities as a career. This book has been an invaluable guide for me, especially in terms of placing allopathic medicine within the context of other healing traditions and practices (some of which go back thousands of years!). Truly integrative in its broad assessment of so many practices.

Coming from a science background, I am somewhat skeptical of the more alternative practices included in the guide (homeopathy, rolfing, iridology) but was pleased with the objective descriptions that acknowledge drawbacks, uncertainties and criticisms in the different modalities. Non-judgmental, just the facts.

One of the best features for me were the lists of professional organizations, websites, and further resources associated with all the various modalities. In this way the guide is a great jumping-off point for further research and career-searching.

This is a unique and valuable reference source that is a one-stop guide to careers in the alternative medicine universe. What I particularly found useful and interesting is the extensive background information and history of each of the many healing areas covered. The listings seem to be very thorough, with lots of helpful sections for people thinking about a career (or even really just wanting to learn about the background) in these practises. I haven't found anything like it in researching the range and scope of educational options. In sum, it's a commendable addition to the public's introduction to training possibilities in integrative medicine and a great place to start (and maybe finish) any search for the learning possibilities in alternative healing. Top marks.

I found this book to be a very good introduction to the subject of reflexology. Hand reflexology was appealing to me, because I couldn't imagine working with my feet in a self-help way. However, after reading Hand Reflexology, I was inspired to learn more about foot and body reflexology as well. Even though the book has that folksy, old-fashioned style of older self-help manuals, it does contain tons of really useful information and presents it in a clear, easy-to-read way. I've read many books on reflexology since first acquiring this one, and I still feel that this is one of the best.

This book was for a class I was taking. It will be one that I will keep because of all the information that it has. Very inspirational. Everyone in the class loved it. Each chapter is from a different author and their beliefs on the roles that healer play and the impact they have on those that are ill or are despondent in many ways. Some just talk about the relationships of people and how each is affected. Should be requirement for any level of education. Doctor's could really benefit from this when dealing with patients to learn how to be compassionate. There are so many that are lacking and out of touch treating people like they are just another in the cattle to treat and dispose of. Really anyone who has a job dealing with clients in any career. Read it for real.

A Gathering of Flowers
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2001-01-14
In the foreword to this book, we are told that the word anthology "literally means a gathering of flowers." The editors of this remarkable collection of essays asked healers from various perspectives to share their ideas, in order to define and foster the "common denominator, or 'golden thread,' that unites all healers and healing methods of ancient, current, and future times."

Below are some representative insights (there are many more contributors -- and much more to each essay-- than are quoted below):

Bernie Siegel, M.D., F.A.C.S., founded the Exceptional Cancer Patients program and is author of Love, Medicine, and Miracles. He believes that his own role -- teaching people how to feel and express love -- succeeds only if he is able to show them that they are lovable.

Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, M.D., is noted world-wide for her work in death, dying, and transition, her books including On Death and Dying and AIDS: The Ultimate Challenge. She believes that healing does not occur only at an individual level: "Because each individual is connected through a vast network of relationships to innumerable other people and creatures on the planet, the process of healing even one person has far-reaching ramifications."

Hugh Prather -- a crisis therapist, columnist, and minister who has written such books as I Touch the Earth/The Earth Touches Me -- has concluded that "all healing approaches heal the body in the identical way; the only difference is in how they limit their options." The "great mistaken assumption" is that healing necessarily means a physical improvement -- it is not up to us to prejudge the form in which the gift of healing is to be received for a given person.

Joan Borysenko, Ph.D. -- former director of the Mind/Body Clinic at New England Deaconess Hospital, Harvard Medical School and author of Minding the Body, Mending the Mind -- writes very succinctly, "The message that underlies healing is simple yet radical: We are already whole... The work of healing is peeling away the barriers of fear that keep us unaware of our true nature of love, peace, and rich interconnection with the web of life. Healing is the rediscovery of who we are and who we have always been."

Jack Schwartz is a research pioneer and author in the field of voluntary control of mind-body processes. He sees disease as holding back energy that can be released if we align ourselves with the process of transformation. Even by using the label of "disease" we create an attitude that constricts our life energy's flow -- as if an enemy is attacking us from outside. He asks that healers be "mapmakers" or "guides" who walk alongside their clients, showing them how to release their own power, how to overcome the fear of change.

Rachel Naomi Remen, M.D., F.A.A.P., who specializes in chronic and life-threatening illness, asks, "beyond all these techniques, what is it that truly fosters the healing process? I think it is the way we stand in relationship to each other that is most important." She offers a model for any healer with whom we might partner in our journey of healing: "...two people in a healing relationship are peers, both wounded and both with healing capacity... I don't believe that one person heals another. I believe that what we do is invite the other person into a healing relationship."

Richard Moss, M.D., founded a nonprofit organization for health and wholeness and is the author of The I That Is We: Awakening to Higher Energies through Unconditional Love and How Shall I Live? "When I was a traditional physician," he writes, "I was content to regard healing as the restoration of health. But today I know that healing is far more than a return to a former condition. True healing means drawing the circle of our being larger and becoming more inclusive, more capable of loving. In this sense, healing is not for the sick alone, but for all humankind."

Concise summaries of thought from contemporary healers.

Review Date: 1998-10-20
Designed "to search for the common denominator......that unites all healers and healing methods", this book pulls together almost 40 relatively short essays by various authors noted for their work in healing body and soul. Because of this approach, some chapters have more relevance than others, depending on the interests of the reader. Reading the ideas of a particular author can spark a desire to read more by that person, so in that sense this is a nice overview course on the breadth of attitudes held by contemporary healers, both traditional and alternative. It probably should be included as required reading by all practitioners of the healing arts.

I first encountered this book in the mid-1990s while living overseas in a review of recommended non-fiction and fiction called, "The Common Reader." I don't know if this review continues today, but the author of the review of The Healing Hand so completely sold me on this book that I ordered a copy and had it shipped to me overseas. I found the book fascinating and authoritative. The reader comes away with not only an expert assessment of wound treatment from paleolithic times to the near present, but also with fodder for odd conversational interjections such as, "Do you know what the treatment for a sucking chest wound was during the period of the Illiad?" Over the intervening years, I've purchased copies for friends--friends either with or without an interest in the treatment of wounds for whatever reason--just because this is one of the most fascinating books I've ever read, and one worth sharing with your intellectual affines.

Excellent historical work regarding wound healing. If one can obtain the original edition of 1975 in good condition, I find it preferable to the reprint of 1992 in that it is paperback rather than hard cover, slightly smaller than the original and the quality of the photos and such were not reproduced all that well in the re-print.

Ancient Medicine Explained

This book is a wonderful resource for gaining knowledge and insight into ancient medicine. Guido Majno not only explains what these ancient cultures did, but in many instances he explains why. He discusses their practices against the foundatioins of their whole culture, including their cultural knowledge base, their religions, their laws, and their technology. He give a great deal of background. For example, when he discusses the medicine of the egyptions, he goes through a basic primer on heroglyphics and then shows the symbols used by the ancient egyptions. This book gives you a real understanding of what these ancient healers struggled with and why they chose certain practices over others. Because of Majno's modern investigation and testing of these practices you also gain an understanding of what they did that worked and what didn't work. I recommend it to anyone who has an interest in medical history.

Majno's book is not only magnificently informative but great fun. His prose is a positive pleasure, his research and knowledge are immense, and he has the gift of combining several perspectives to explain why procedures that now seem appalling made sense to the physicians of the period. He has experimentally tested a number of ancient remedies, and he is refreshingly willing to assume intelligence and craft among early physicians, even when they seem to be doing precisely the wrong things. His discussions of how we learn what medical techniques might have been is fascinating in its own right. Of his major sections (Sumerian, Egyptian, Greek, Chinese, Indian, and Roman), the Egyptian is probably best and the Chinese weakest.

Most books on the history of medicine read rather like either horror novels or dusty tomes, with few authors finding that rare balance between entertainment at the price of detail or dullness for the sake of completeness. Guido Majno's work THE HEALING HAND manages to entertain the lay reader without bogging down in too much medical terminology. THE HEALING HAND intrigues without succumbing to that all-to-tempting penchant many medical history writers have of detailing the most absolutely vile and disgusting medical practices in the world while sacrificing attention to the ones that modern readers will recognize and possibly even relate to.

The driving force of Majno's work, one that comes through plainly in his writing, is that he really wants you understand what it is he's talking about. By examining available historical texts, piecing together data from archaelological digs, and even experimenting his theories on himself, Majno take you on a "journey" through medical wound healing history, starting with ancient Egypt and the Pharoahs and moving on through Hippocrates's ancient Greece, Ceaser's ancient Rome, ancient India, and ancient China. Few authors could manage the detailed tapestry of cultures and medical information Majno deftly weaves. He treats the subject of ancient would healing as few other writers do and, in the process, exposes you to how his mind works by writing how he thinks the minds of healers worked concerning wounds during the aforementioned time periods.

It's that spark of looking into his mind that makes his writing intriguing to me. It's rather like getting an easily understandable peek into the mind of a genius hard at work on an earth-shattering discovery. Combine the easily accessible text with the understandable pictures and graphics, complete and unobtrusive footnotes, and the wonderfully extensive bibliography and you have an invaluable addition to your library.

As a lay researcher in a medieval re-enactment society, I found this work a true gem, well worth the price of adding to my collection. Even though it would only be considered a "secondary source," the details were too rich and the clarity of the information too valuable to think twice about its purchase. Majno gave me the "why" behind so many medical practices I'm rather saddened that I didn't find this book sooner. Despite being written originally in 1975, I've read and reread it many times using it as a springboard for further research and experementation.

Good for both the newcomer and the experienced reader of buddhism. I have read this book three times, and every time is a new experience that creates an amazing aura of mindful positivity.
It is not a book of religion but it is the book about positivity.
I would reccomend it for everyone.
It has changed my life.

A delight to read. Practical and multidimensional.

I love this book. It brings the wisdom of Tibetan Buddhism into everyday life--whether you call yourself a Buddhist or not. It shows how you can use healing attitudes and imagery. Simple, nondogmatic, loving, and practical.

This is an absolutely wonderful book.

I bought this book when it came out in 1996. I thought it would be the first of many to follow and it is still the only one own. A lot of information is out on the internet now, but I always come back to this book and just double check what I find. It is not a big book and does not contain everything, but it is a great book that contains a lot. Yes, the layout is great and information is so easy to find. I love the recipes! I have also varied some of the ingrediants with the other herbs she talks about that have the same healing properties and had great results.

I have gone back to this book over and over, using the tinctures or teas as needed. Keville gives excellent explanations regarding different ailments, then suggests remedies, often telling a short story about someone who used the remedies. I have given copies of this book to three different family members and even took my copy along on a month long trip. As with Dr. James A. Duke's books, I trust the advice in Keville's books.

Simply amazing for the price!!!

******This is a review of the paperback version*******

It's amazing that I can go out and buy several $20+ 'recommended' books, and the 5-8 dollar paperbacks end up being the best. Such is the case with Kathi Keville's Herbs for Health and Healing. While not an herbal that is the end all of every herbal out there, it's extremely informative, enlightening, easily digestible, and chocked full of useful information.

The author genuinely has a love of herbs and a belief in their performance; for a change we have an herbalist who really is one, and not just trying to cash in on the latest craze. This little gem is broken down cleverly, with each section as exciting as the last.

The introduction alone is useful, highlighting some of the common reasons to use herbs and natural remedies; she lists facts that are eye openers and refreshing.

Why Use Herbs? further demonstrates her reasoning, listing the troubles of combating side effects, the benefits of herbs, how they work, why they do, and more.

The second, Herbal Preparation, briefly touches upon various way to use herbal remedies and make your own. It's of course clear to see this should be included, and included in this order. She mentions main herbal preparations, with some brief illustrations. There is not outright detail, but it's clear enough to get the basic idea.

The third section, Herbal Medicine, breaks down the larger sections into various body systems, beginning with the Brain and nervous system, ending with The skin. Each system is introduced with the roles it plays, things that can go wrong, and why they do. From here on she lists major complaints, symptoms and causes, backs up the herbs recommended with various studies, then backs up further with personal experience, and THEN usually has a basic formula to recommend. Excellent quick resource for a variety of maladies, clearly and confidently written.

For part 3 we have Living with Herbal Wisdom. Here she devotes an entire chapter to Men's Health, then Women's, then Childrens. Everything from hormones and infertility, to colic, to male baldness is touched upon. The section for children is an especially welcome entry; teeting, earaches, sugar blues, you name it.

And....this isn't all. Chapter 14 lists Herbal first aid, helping you establish a 'first aid kit' , why the herbs are recommended, how to use them, etc. Here she goes into detail on poison oak, ivy, bug bites, stings, mosquito repellants, and sunburns.

Chapter 15, aptly titled Cautions and Considerations, warns about using things safely. Topics include essential oils, identification, contamination, endangered herbs, and rare reactions. 16 dives briefly into the huge pool of aromatherapy, something that is obviously a first love for Kathi. In fact, she has other books on this subject alone. Techniques and measurements are all laid out. The list keeps growing - chapter 17 brushes upon Skin Care - including hair of course. Homemade beauty recipes, as well as combating skin issues and problems - are mentioned. Great extra! Finally, chapter 18 is about cooking for health - delicious recipes are given for soups, oils, vinegar, spices, pestos, veggies, hot sauces, homemade coffees, ending with candies such as ginger and horehound drops.

I repeat, sometimes the more expensive, bigger, prettier book is skimpier. From skin and cosmetics to cooking to first aid to body conditions, it's all here. It's not the most advanced herbal out there but it's not too basic for those with experience. Beginners will easily understand, while those who know their stuff will keep learning as the page turns. At this price, it's a bargain, a steal, almost a sin if not purchased.

Essential reference any herbalist must have!

The organization of this highly informative book allows the reader to read straight through, or us as a reference - easy to find the information needed. I found this book along with others of similar topic in my local library. I kept straying to this one, causing me to order one of my own. In comparison to my own discoveries, this book is right on track. Mostly, I've learned much from it!

This is a very practical book for those just starting to use the contemporary healing method of homeopathy. As well it will be welcomed by lay homeopathic study groups around the English speaking world. Instructional. Well Organized. Ready to teach you how. Once you know you want to learn how, this is the best place to start your study.

As one begins to learn the homeopathic methodology, repertorising is a difficult, if not ominous endeavor. This book helps to sort out the many nuances of old, and clarify much of the "older" jargon. This puts the learning curve back in the present! I have utilized this book extensively in my studies with the British Institute of Homeopathy. I recommend it highly!

Most homeopathic books aimed at the layperson focus on acute prescribing in homeopathy. Even though this book is aimed at beginning homeopaths, it is accessible and understandable to the layperson, and can help to understand constitutional prescribing. It will enable you to work with your homeopath to find the similimum for you and your family members (because you understand what he/she is trying to accomplish and you can contribute meaningfully) .

I have only worked through the first two chapters of the book, and I can't believe how much I have learnt.
