My sister sent me this book for my birthday. She heard the Tuttle's speak at a book signing and bought at least ten copies to distribute throughout our family. I have to admit, initially I did not think I would enjoy the book. I mean, I'm young, healthy--What do I need with a book like this?
Was I wrong! I do need a book like this. First off, I am a college graduate, gainfully employed but without any healthcare. Not one scrap of it. Every visit to a doctor is strictly out of pocket. So you can probably guess that I do not get to the doc's too often. This book explained to me how to help prevent visits to the doc's--nutrition, nutrition, nutrition!!
This book gave me a simple, complete guide how to protect my health; how to minimize the effects of stress in my life. Let's face it,like too many men and women in my generation, I just cannot afford to get sick! It's as simple as that!
My sister tells me there's a second book by the Tuttle's due out soon. Well, they have at least one advanced order.

As a talk radio host, I had the pleasure to meet Meredith and George Tuttle when they were my guests on Thenewtalkofthetown.com A.M. 1570 WANR "Life with Lori!" (airs 3 -4 p.m. weekdays. ) I had read my copy of Adaptagenics prior to the show, and found it to be a wonderful guide to staying well and fending off free radicals and toxins, which cause most cancers. The wellness model is a preventative guide to fight diseases, which we should all live by instead of waiting to live with the sickness model, and deal with how to correct or try to cure an illness or disease once it has invaded our system. I highly recommend Adaptagenics for everyone to read and follow the ten nutritional supplements suggested to obtain the full benefits thereof. I have purchased 5 books thus far and given them as gifts. Christmas is coming and this would make a fantastic gift for those you care about, especially if they are taking a statin drug for cholesterol. I thank the Tuttles for their time and expertise in writing this book and I am looking forward to their next 2 books in the making!

My VA Man!

Review Date: 2004-07-17
I'm a Vietnam Vet and like a lot of my fellow vets, my health is not so good. I depend on the VA Hospital system for all of my health care, including my prescriptions. Over the years I've come to trust my VA pharmacist (my VA MAN) MUCH MORE than the docs. MY VA MAN, it just so happens, is the co-author of this book! And on more than one occasion he has helped me out. In all my years going to the PITT VA, this man has never failed to tell me the truth about the meds I take--side effects, drug interactions, you name it and he knows it! SO you can pretty much guess that when I found out that him and his daughter wrote a book I was the first in line to buy it! And boy am I glad I did! Mr. Tuttle is always warning me that the meds I take remove vitamins from my body and in this book he explains HOW, WHY AND WHAT I CAN DO ABOUT IT.

No doctor has ever told me that I needed to take CO-Q beacuse I also take Zocor. And no doctor has ever told my wife about flaxseed for degenerative joint disease. And no doctor has ever asked me about my Agent Orange exposure. It wasn't until I read ADAPTAGENICS and found out my IF number that I finally understood the toll Agent Orange, etc. has had on my health. My wife used to be a hairdresser and until we did her IF number we had no idea about what her chemical exposure has been and how it has affected her health. This book has made believers out of me and my wife--the day I finished reading this book is the day we started buying vitamins and herbals. We haven't looked back since!
EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW WHAT'S IN THIS BOOK! (including the VA docs)

As an avid health nut and concerned father I found this book to be of invaluable use to me and my family. Not only does it set forth an easy to understand nutritional gameplan for heathly living it provides insight into the environmental dangers challenging us as consumers everyday. While there are a lot of nutritional supplement books on the market today, (I should know-I've read a ton), I am unable to name another that so succintly communicates the totality of healthy living like Adaptagenics. This book also reassured me about my decisions concerning my children's health, like my hesitance to allow them to buy their lunches in the school's cafeteria. Adaptagenics is a must for any concerned parent or conscientious consumer.

In the six years that I have been a professional pranic healer and certified psychotherapist, I have found myself almost always coming back to this book no matter how much I have learnt along the way. Theres always something there that can better a healing session, and the author's absolutely stunning command of the healing world is certainly awe-inspiring.

When I first attended the healing sessions conducted by Choa Kok Sui in Southern India, I had no idea it was to be one of the core foundations for the rest of my life. Admittedly, the basic healing practices can be learnt by anyone willing to open up to the novelty of the system, but I have found that the advanced healing systems, all mentioned in this book, are mastered only though repeated practice. The key word to being a successful healer is practice, practice and more practice. I often find myself self-healing through the day if theres no one to practice on, and believe me, it is the best way to develop the powers of visualization and intent, which are crucial to being a good pranic healer.

I am glad that America is slowly awaking to the wonder of pranic healing. While reiki healing has been here for a while, from my own learning I have found it to be a somewhat poor cousin to pranic healing simply because the cleaning process in pranic healing is much more elaborate and thorough. At the moment, my current patient suffers from a spinal problem that he has had since birth, and I was rather apprehensive about the number of healings I would have to perform before results showed themselves. In general, I find that the Western patients I have treated are more desirous of fast results than my Eastern counterparts, and in this case it was a stroke of good fortune all around when the patient seemed especially sensitive and open to the healing session. The wonder of pranic healing is when the patient sometimes expresses a physical reaction to the invisible process within minutes, making me believe that this system is not 'spiritual' as many insist, but rather a very down to earth and practical form of healing that human beings all around the world should show more interest in.

The great thing about this book is how it has been divided into parts exactly like an Occidental medical manual. This makes it so easy for a healer to pinpoint the ailment he wishes to treat, and for him to master the treatment beforehand. I have healed persons with kidney stones, my mother's chronic headache problems, my dad's bad back, and a whole bunch of friends and acquaintances. Very vital to pranic healing, and the books will also confirm this, is the necessity of meditation. I cannot stress enough how much this affects one's healing capabilities. Being a student of raja yoga, I find that any sort of meditation based on the Eastern systems (be it raja, kriya, or hatha, though I would highly recommend an inert form of meditation over active processes such as hatha yoga) helps immensely. Choa Kok Sui, who wrote this book, says that the meditation on twin hearts is the most beneficial, and it is well worth sticking to his advice.

For anyone who is remotely interested in pranic healing, I highly recommend this manual. If you are already a basic pranic healer, you HAVE to get this one! The next step after this level of pranic healing, is the healing with crystals, and I hope that ... soon carries that one as well. All these books are indispensable. Spread the word.

Focused Color Energy Healing

Master Choa's book, ADVANCED PRANIC HEALING, is a first-rate reference source for any healer doing highly specific color energy healing work. This book is ideal for advanced healers who are comfortable and experienced with doing healings and discerning a wide variety of energy conditions in people. While basic healing techniques are clearly described in the beginning, the majority of this book presumes a fair amount of experience and proficiency with color healings on the part of the reader. Those just starting out with color healing may still find this book useful, as it clearly describes what healers see and feel as they are doing pranic healings.

I am impressed with the breadth and depth of conditions described in this book along with their associated treatments. Everything from migraine headaches, inner ear infections, torn tendons, dislocations, to internal wounds, cataracts, kidney stones and deafness are discussed in detail. Recommendations on color density (lightness or darkness) as well as energization are given with explanations which I found illuminating and intriguing. Master Choa's experience with prana is evident throughout this beautifully written and illustrated book, leaving readers feeling inspired and well-informed. This book's index is clearly organized, so the healer can look up recommended treatments until such time as the underlying logic of it all sinks in (such as avoiding use of orange healing energies around peoples' heads, and paying attention to which way one's fingers are pointing).

Even though I mostly utilize universal healing energies, such as Reiki, I still find ADVANCED PRANIC HEALING immensely useful for its insights into what kinds of frequencies are best suited for various ailments. I recommend this book for anyone doing color healings, as well as those wishing to catch an intimate and revealing glimpse of the healer's world.

A must for your collection!

It gives clear, simple and precise guidelines for healing numerous ailments affecting the different systems of the body ( eg. respiratory, musculoskeletal etc). The technique can also be applied for the prevention of illness. I also recommend Pranic Healing and Pranic Psychotherapy by the same author, both equally brilliant. A true and priceless gift to humanity.

The Book delivers almost exactly what it promises ,so I will not mention its good points .One thing I didnt like much was the lack of clear photos for the points ,inside the chambers section of the book .Although you get a rough idea on where each point is ,I had to use my older bibliography in order to pinpoint the exact location of most points .
Also I find unacceptable that the authors did not give extensive information on Governing Vessel and Conception Vessel .Although they mention the points at the last section of the book where they present a sum of combinations and points ,there is no analysis of GV and CV .That was a disappointment .

The best book I have every seen on Dim-Mak!

The book of Walker and Bauer is a welcome futher information besides the works of Erle Montaigue. The authors have deep insights into the art of acupuncture. For this reason it was easier for them to go into the secrets of DIM Mac. Nevertheless without medical knowledge it remains difficult to understand all details of this theme. There are some mistakes in the book, but it not so important. For example the paintings and the text of the bladder meridian use different systems. Therefore some acupuncture points do not correspond between figures and text. A lot of fighting combinations in Dim Mac remain hypotheses, because a scintific analysis is not possible or mandatory. Such combinations may result in damage of individual health, experiments have to be forbidden. Nevertheless this book is an exellent work of ancient chinese martial art.

I am proud to call Rick Bauer a friend and his prescence in my martial art life has always been positive, informative and influential. His long tireless work to bring this superlative book to fruition, on a deeply intricate and little known art, Dim Mak, is commendable. This collaborative effort with Master Flane Walker has long been needed and I am now able to clearly state that this is the book the internal martial arts community has been missing.

The subject matter, contents and layout of this work have been given keen attention which benefits the overall aesthetic. It is both easy on the readers eye and informative without alienating the layman. It does not play down the depth of these arts for those who frequent it's heights but rather strikes a perfect balance which comfortably caters to all; no mean feat!

In refering to my University manuals on Chinese Accupuncture Point Locations, I made a comparison with this book which did not leave me wanting. My University manuals were a largely dry affair which
catered to the medical TCM fraternity while the Book of Dim Mak covers all bases and then some. Among some of the most delightful aspects of the book is the martial applications of the points as an adjunct to the medical; very important in my view.

The subject of Dim Mak has been given lavish treatment in a most concise fashion, would it were that all books were so accessable when dealing with obscure subjects such as these. I have already found this to be the number one go-to book when requiring detailed information on Dim Mak, and while Erle Montaigue has had his own excellent works out for some years now, I can safely say that this work is an important addition to the study.

I couldn't recommend this work more highly for those with a vested interest in truly understanding the intracies of Dim Mak from tip to toe.

Ayurvedic Healing is an excellent book whether you know anything about the Vedic medical science of Ayurveda, or not. The book deals with:
a) Finding out what body type you have, (vata-air, pitta-fire, kapha- earth/water) based on a questionnaire of health related questions
b) It helps you determine what kind of diet you can follow to balance your system.
c) It deals with common ailments as well as major diseases, covering everything from arthritis to AIDS
d) You can learn how to use chants, colors etc to relieve stress.

And that s just section I. In section II, it deals with the technical preparations with the use of various herbs, oils etc, which ayurvedic doctors use.

Thus this book is a comprehensive study of Ayurveda, which can be used to good effect by both the layman and the ayurvedic practitioner.

Comprehensive.

I agree entirely with the other reviewers. This is one of the most complete, easy to understand, information rich "guides" on Ayurvedic Medicine I have read. I highly recommend this one for anyone interested in Ayurvedic Medicine, from the practitioner to the remotely curious.

~I have read dozens of books on Ayurveda published in English; this stands out as simply the best of what I have read.

It is sensitive, sympathetic to the conditions discussed, and lucid.

A great work. So many others have been based on (and written with) excellent information and the best of intentions, but somehow have ended up being more confusing than helpful... even in something as basic as classifying doshas, I never really grasped them clearly until I read this book, which is laid out~~ calmly, clearly, and with massive knowledge and experience underlying its clarity.

Again, an excellent book by someone who also seems to be a great human being-- it flows through all his words.~

I bought this book in 1993 and consider it a keeper for life. It has 34 breath-by-breath guided meditations including ones on calming the body, contact with wholesome things, impermanence, accepting parents, anger, death, and the false perception of separateness.

Thich Nhat Hanh offers brief explanations of the importance of each exercise. When I first got it I would take one exercise per day to work with.

It's all quite beautiful. If you are interested in meditation, or want to deepen your practice, seriously consider this book.

Aside from deep meditation, I find myself practicing these meditations whenever I have a few quiet minutes (and even sometimes when I don't). With practice, the key words take root. Thich Nhat Hanh's knowledge and guidance are invaluable.

Excellent but not so much a book as a collection of guided meditations

Review Date: 2007-04-10
I just wanted people to know that this is not really a book, like most of Hanh's other books, but rather a collection of guided meditations with some commentary on them.

As such, it is excellent and I highly recommend it. I have read many of Hanh's books and most are excellent, all are worth reading.

My favorite is "Anger", perhaps because I have issues with anger and use Buddhist techniques - meditation, philosophy, loving kindness - to help me control it and - hopefully - eventually put out the fire.

But this book has meditations on about everything, and I like to do 15-40 minutes of regular meditation on the breath (vipissana) and then close with 5-10 minutes of these meditations.

In my opinion, Thay as his students call Thich Nhat Hanh, is a living Buddha or Bodhisatva. He seems to embody what the Buddha taught and yet he is so down to earth he can bring that enlightenment to the common man and woman who know little of Buddhism. His techniques and explanations are so clear and simple, anyone can grasp them, use them, and benefit from them.

Thanks to Thich Nhat Hanh for writing these books!

This is the gist of the practice. You can sit down and use these guided meditations to get started, or to maintain your practice, or to get centered agian, right now in this moment. Some are steeped in Buddhist terminology and structure, which Thich Nhat Hahn explains. But most are non-dogmatic, easily accessible, and potentially life-changing. I've read much by Thich Nhat Hahn, and all of it seems to-the-point and profoundly wise. But this is the book I go back to again and again.

I have enjoyed Thich Nhat Hanh's other books because (the translation of) his writing makes Buddhist thoughts and practices clear and accessible; not too simplistic and not too academic. The guided meditations in this book are no exception. Ranging from very simple to rather complex, each meditation is written in poem like phrases, or stages, with the key words of each in the border off to the side. I have been memorizing the key words and saying them to myself while I run--it makes me much more aware of myself and my surroundings than listening to earphones and makes me concentrate on my breathing, all of which makes the experience more enjoyable.

I would recommend anyone who intends to explore the use complementary medicine in cancer to start off with this book.

Now in paperback, this is the book to send your friends with cancer. Its wide-ranging, patiently and caringly written, scholarly but accessible, and chocked with interesting references and good insights. Michael Lerner has taken it upon himself to do a thorough 'work-up' on the best of that heterogeneous lot of hearsay cures and popular supplemental treatments that cancer patients will start hearing about from friends, relatives and distant acquaintaces practically as soon as they are diagnosed. Choices in Healing gives one a way to start sorting it out.

Lerner strives for, and I feel achieves, an excellent balance between optimism and skepticism as he covers (a) the different "cultures" of conventional treatment - aggressive, gentle, U.S., European, Japanese, (b) spiritual approaches, (c) nutritional approaches, (d) physical and energetic approaches, (e) non-conventional herbal and pharmacological approaches. Stanislaw Burzynski, Virginia Livingston, Joseph Gold and Emanuel Revici, are some of the famous off-range cure inventors that he dignifies with his patient research.

I also found his chapters on the spiritual and psychological dimensions of the cancer journey especially strong. He takes the reader up to death's door. And beyond. The chapter on pain is a revelation.

Highly recommended for anyone.

First a word about me: I'm one of those cancer patients who doctors either love or hate. I read up on everything, and I am openminded about the benefits and risks of both conventional and alternative cancer therapies. I question everything and want to understand where the limits of our current understanding lie. I want references!

If you are anything like me, you'll appreciate the exceptionally fine balance that Michael Lerner draws. He honestly investigates the extent to which various cancer therapies work, mostly by reviewing "serious" research which examines cancer treatment from different angles. In areas where scientific studies contradict each other, he doesn't draw unfounded conclusions. He manages to give specific guidelines for dealing with cancer without advocating any one therapy too much.

Of the many books I've read on cancer, this is the one I appreciate the most. The tone of the book is honest, warm and caring; personal without being sentimental. And best of all, it inspires hope.

The one caveat I have is that I'd love to see a revised edition with all the newest research reviewed! If you're considering a purchase, do a websearch for "Lerner" and "Choices in Healing", this should provide you with a reference to an online version of the whole book. Once you're convinced, buy the book!

A valuable intro into the role that gut health plays in overall health and prevention of illnesses. I found Dr. Shahani's book to be an important foundation to planning future health strategies for myself and my family.

Where can I buy DDS-1 acidophilus which sounds like the only acidophilus I should consider in starting these supplements?

This is defintely an overall positive book on a very negative topic. The author here explains a lot of different ways that you can get the serotinin back to normal without having to deal with drug therapy.

The one problem about this book is that at times it is hard to get thru. The author throws in a lot of information that I'm sure a lot of us wont understand. I wish it was just a little more simplified. FOr example, in one chapter, he explains how a vitamen b6 can be more effective then an antidepresent in treating severe depression. However, he doesnt list the dosage or the amount of vitamen b6 that might be required to take. (that can be a bit of a problem for some).

Yet, this book is amazingly written, anaylized, and hopeful. Its good to know that someone really researched all of these facts and figures. He had a much different outlook on the whole deal as he broke down several vital stastics that the mass media and drug conpanies would never want to admit.

Despite its uplifting appeal, This is more of a book for a professional therapist rather then a client. I'd suggest for the client to read some important parts of this book to the therapist. A lot of this information is complicated and since Syd doesn't list the dosages and the "How exacltys" to get rolling on the correct bandwagon. Almost all of these methods are hard to persue solely.

But again this is a good book and I hope it gets more recongition then it has gotten in drugged america.

Excellent Book!

As a psychologist wanting my clients to be educated on the biochemistry of depression and possible solutions, I have found this to be the best of all the alternatives I have read. It discusses all the treatments rather than focusing on one alone, as many books do. It is well written, easy to understand, and treats the reader as if he or she is intelligent enough to grasp a good deal of information. I think this book would help everyone in therapy, and would also help therapists in their attempts to help.

THE book on depression

If you're looking to treat depression without using drugs, this is the book to get. The book is packed with almost every type of therapy known to cure depression. If there's any academic research on the subject, Baumel mentions the study and also tells us whether it's an uncontrolled or controlled study (something I appreciate as an academic). He usually explains how the study was conducted in enough detail that it can be replicated at home. This means that he included supplement dosages and length of time needed to see results. He also mentions how to purchase St. John's Wort and light therapy devices, which could save hundreds of dollars.

The way to use this book is to read the therapy, see if it matches your symptoms, decide whether you're willing to make the commitment (e.g., am I willing to take B6 for the next 6 months?), and then to try it. I had to try several different therapies until I found ones that worked for me. If one didn't work for me, I would read another section of this book and choose a new therapy to try. One problem with the book is that it covered some therapies in limited detail, and sometimes I needed to look up additional information in other sources.

Before getting this book, I tried looking up information online, but there was too much noise rather than real information to get any use out of what I was reading. This book cut through the noise and gave a concise summary of therapies that I could use to help myself.

In summary, the book is well-researched and an excellent resource. Using this book plus some free online information, I cured my moderate chronic depression in three months without drugs. Thank you, Syd Baumel, for writing this book!

Forget about "touchy feely" talk about herbal remedies. If you're a skeptic, this book will change your mind about St. John's Wort and what BRAND you buy. Covers a staggering number of therapies in great detail: some you probably know like electric shock therapy, Prozac and cognitive therapy. Other lesser known therapies include Omega-3, 5-HTP, SAM-e, and Tyrosine. The author did his homework. Citing numerous clinical trials, studies, and on-line news groups, I found this reading a bit overwhelming or too dry at times, but only because of the author's thorough investigation. All in all, it was well worth it. Makes your doctors sit up and take notes when you talk about how YOU want to treat your depression. (that alone is worth it). An excellent reference that grows with you as your treatment for depression evolves.

Good Information but in an Odd Format

I am new-ish to homeopathy but not a complete neophyte. I have been using one main book as my reference for a few months now and haven't taken any medicine, save homeopathic remedies, in about 3 months. This includes antihistamines, decongestants AND Naproxen!

I like this book but find it tricky to use. It is hard to pinpoint exactly why the layout is so cryptic but I think it's just generally not an easy reference book. The information is there, just not in a speedy format.

Remedies are organized by type but *inside* those headings are the detailed charts for specific issues, like colds etc.. I guess, if you prescribe to the theory that one of these seven remedies will work for almost everything, it makes sense but I have found that I usually have symptoms that warrant another remedy so it doesn't really work for me.

Another thing that adds to the confusion is; 1) after the chart on symptoms there are more write ups and comparisons underneath as well as the main remedy's attributes. Some might find this a more detailed/comprehensive approach but I feel like I have to look 4 places to get the whole picture instead on just 1 or 2. I would have preferred the charts to be larger and more detailed over having to flip back and forth so much, and 2) There is another chart in the back with quick tips but this one has even fewer remedies listed, sometimes only one or two. I just keep feeling like I have to look here, there and everywhere to get the whole picture of the symptoms/remedies.

It would be nice, also if Kali Bich. were mentioned in the "colds" area, instead of just in the back under "sinusitis", as many head colds lead to sinus issues.

I am giving this a 4, despite my confusion with the book's layout, because it still has a lot of good information and I can tell that the author took a lot of time in considering the layout. I think, potentially due to the small layout of the book, it was just too hard to carry off and is not a huge quirk, just tricky to get used to.

I hope this helps...

An Elegant and Practical Form of Medicine

When I first saw the title, "Easy Homeopathy," it sounded like an oxymoron. After all, homeopathy is not easy: and I've been using it for 25 years!

But I was in for a very pleasant surprise. The book is certainly designed for the beginner, but there is plenty of meat for the more seasoned homeopath.

The book is arranged into three parts:
1. Getting started in homeopathy
2. The seven remedies that should be in every medicine cabinet
3. A short alphabetical list of common ailments with suggestions for which homeopathic remedies to use

The first part is not only good reading for the beginner, but is also good preparation for anyone visiting a homeopath for the first time. Some of the questions that you may be asked - "At what time of the day are your symptoms worse? Are there any foods that you hate? What is you favorite type of weather?" - often seem a bit odd, so it is good to know why the homeopath will ask.

Dr. Shalts explains the seven principles of homeopathy:
1. The Law of Similars
2. Provings
3. Individualized Treatments
4. The Single Remedy
5. The Minimal Dose
6. Potencies
7. Hering's Principles of Cure

There are plenty of anecdotes to keep the material fresh and interesting.

In Part 2 he lays out his seven remedies with amusing memory aids:
1. Aconite: He calls this the Homeopathic Emergency Services Unit
2. Arnica: This one is the Homeopathic Surgeon
3. Belladonna: The Homeopathic Pediatrician
4. Chamomilla: This one is called the Homeopathic Babysitter
5. Gelsemium: The Homeopathic Neurologist
6. Ignatia: This is the Homeopathic Therapist
7. Nux Vomica: The Homeopathic Gastroenterologist

This section is very well done, with charts to highlight similarities and differences between remedies.

Part 3 has the list of conditions, and in addition to advice about which remedies to use, Dr. Shalts also suggests other helpful products and, most importantly, when to seek professional help. Some books on homeopathy look a bit like cookery books, but this one enables you to start thinking like a homeopath.

This is an excellent book for the beginner, but there is also much for the more seasoned user. Although it is advertised as a first aid book, there is actually far more inside. Even if you already know something about natural medicine, you will likely find a lot to interest you in this well written, attractive and inexpensive book.

Highly recommended.

"Easy Homeopathy" delivers what other homeopathic books only promise. It explains exactly what to do to quickly eliminate acute problems. Finally I can use homeopathic remedies myself! I've been looking for such a book for so many years! All these "Comprehensive" and "Complete" guides expect me to become a homeopath. But all I want is to be able to use homeopathic remedies right away. The book teaches in detail all the important characteristics of 7 main remedies useful for many conditions. And then it offers over 80 alternatives. The information is organized in numerous tables. Reading "Easy Homeopathy" is fun. Dr. Shalts offers many real -life examples. I also appreciated a "cheat sheet" provided at the end of the book. It directs you to most commonly indicated remedies for many acute conditions. Good job!

I've had this book for MONTHS and I still discover chapters I haven't seen before! *LOL* I swear, this little baby has so much information packed into it I would find it exceptionally hard to NOT something great about it. And it IS great, you can find just about anything in here and the recommendations are GOOD.

The book has hundreds of pages, and the pages are printed very thin. Normally this would be a two or three volume boook set if were printed with the usual type of paper. It is well worth the money - no doubts about that! But do make sure your bookshelf is strong, too. Because this book is *heavy!* :)

Don't pass this up, FANTASTIC book.
