I found this book to have some really interesting ideas on how to approach things that may come up in your life as a clinical
professional. However, I am thinking he could have written more about his experiences. The book was not too long and an
easy read which is fine..but he could have expanded alot more on topics such as group counseling, approaches, and so forth.

I highly recommend Dr. Luterman's text book to any professional who works with the families of people with disabilities. I
had read the book seven years ago as part of my graduate training in speech-language pathology. More than any other book,
this one has had a lasting effect on my clinical practice. Dr. Luterman is an research audiologist turned counselor. When
discussing the issues facing families, he presents research as well as personal anecdotes and quotes from the families he
was worked with in his practice. The clinical anecdotes give a personal feel to much of the writing; for a text book, it is
can be emotionally charged reading. The book describes models of understanding family adaptation to disabilities, and perhaps
most importantly, the book describes basic counseling techniques. Whenever the going gets tough with a family, I find myself
referring back to this book, especially the chapters on counseling techniques. One reason that I recommend this book so highly
is that it contains information that is difficult to come by. I work with speech-pathology interns and graduate students,
as well as other professionals - occupational and physical therapists, nurses and educators. Although many are very skilled
in their discipline, they often feel defeated in their attempts to understand or deal with family issues. When I loan them
Dr. Luterman's book, they consistently find it illuminating.

Facing Alzheimer's Disease at such an early age...

Dragon Grip drew me in to the day-to-day awfulness, dilemmas, and humor not found in other books nor discussed by most spouses
or caregivers who endure the fast progressing mental and physical decline of a young 50-something person. The author balances
how the disease affected her husband with how the results of his disease impacted her and their children.
This book is a must read for any age that has a connection with someone with Alzheimer's disease. The author contrasts the similarities and the differences between Alzheimer's that affects elderly usually over 65 and Early Onset Alzheimer's Disease: those of lost income and retirement funding, impact on sub-adult children still at home or in college, and the caregiver's loss of companionship and social sphere.
As the long distance caregiver to my mother who had Alzheimer's and a subsequent career change to working with the elderly, including those with this disease, I am in awe of the author's resilience and ability to chronicle this devastating disease while she and the family were living it.

Dragon Grip amazed me. It is a very educational book concerning the Early Onset of Alzheimer's disease. I never knew there
were two types of Alzheimer's disease and one that could destroy someone so young.
The author very methodically, and passionately, describes the painful stages of this very fast and progressive disease that "gripped" her husband and destroyed his great mind. She painfully explains the impact on the family and her as the caregiver.
The author's day to day account of this devastating disease is priceless. It provides a wealth of information to other caregivers and offers them support in dealing with their loved ones.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book to everyone, even if they are not impacted by this dreadful disease, because the book will help people learn how to deal with any tragedy. I admire the author's ability to write such a well written and valuable book.

Bryan Merton was given the opportunity, however unfortunate, to formulate this useful tool to be used in time of need. I
have not had to use mine yet, thank God, but I bought it because "you never know." Also, friends and family have found it
to be a lifesaver, so to speak, when they have borrowed it from me. Everyone should have one!

The flipchart works very, very well for communicating with someone who cannot talk. It's full of common and useful phrases
which facilitate dialog between you and someone who is ill. I found it to be very useful to "talk" with a friend who was
hospitalized and because of repiration apparatus, could not use their voice. The flipchart is worth it's weight in gold if
you are visiting with someone you care about who is ill or hospitalized.

As the parent of a 17 year old son who relies on AAC, I know first-hand, the importance of communication. Interacting with
others is critical to our quality of life. Severe communication challenges are an endlessly tall wall, a barrier to social
and academic inclusion and success.
Cafiero breaks down the wall, brick by brick, with
an easy to understand text full of common sense strategies, based on relevant research described through real-life vignettes that include individuals with autism spectrum disorder.
Cafiero transcends the complexities of AAC and presents the myriad facets with a balance often missed in AAC literature.
Her sincere respect and enjoyment of people with ASD is evident throughout the text.
A must-have for parents, educators and everyone who loves or interacts with individuals with autism spectrum disorder.

I am a Grad. student taking a Neural Basis of Comm. class. It's been over 5 years since I've had the prerequisite neuroanatomy
class so I've been a little worried about being able to review and catch up. I'm glad I bought this book. This book has really
great graphic aids which helps me understand concepts better. Just last night I was reading a description that wasn't making
sense to me and then when I saw the diagram on the next page I was able to understand it. The writing in this book is precise
and doesn't bog the reader down with so much detail that the concept is totally lost. It's not easy reading, but it doesn't
put me to sleep almost immediately like some other speech anatomy textbooks have. Even if it's not your asssigned textbook,
if you have to take a neuroscience/neuroanatomy class I'd reccomend this book as a good resource.

like to receive a more general guide about your psychological problems (maybe you have not read anything in this genre yet)
then I would recommend The Feeling Good Handbook. After that you will see if you need to study more and read this book.

I haven't read other books on social anxiety, but I have read a number of books on anxiety disorders. This book is so helpful
to me - it's practical and realistic. The author totally gets social anxiety - the causes, beliefs, behaviors, and effects
- and suggests cognitive behavioral techniques to address and ultimately minimize the anxiety. It's a comforting relief to
have someone understand, explain, and help resolve something that can sometimes be so difficult to live with.

From Introduction:
"The purpose of this book is to provide a quick reference to those disorders, syndromes, and conditions seen among clients served by speech-language pathologists. It was written primarily as a source of information regarding those conditions for a diverse group of professionals, including clinicians, students of speech-language pathology, researchers, and educators, and lay people also will find the text informative and helpful in better understanding the nature of these disorders.
The book is organized by a classification of syndromes and conditions rather then by type of communication disorder. This allows clinicians preparing for a new admission to make a quick comparison between a stated diagnosis and information in the book relating to the diagnosis. It also recognizes that many conditions require intervention for more than one type of communication disorder.
The intent of this book is to provide more than a quick reference to specific disorders. It was written also to provide a summation of the present state of knowledge and practice regarding each condition. To that end, no sources used in researching the book were published earlier than 1992.
We sought to include in the book as many relevant conditions as possible. Most often the primary factor in excluding any particular one was a lack of published information regarding that condition and/or speech and language implications of the disorder. Whenever possible we included disorders mentioned in the literature. In some instances, this led to the inclusion of syndromes for which literally only a handful of cases have been identified.
Each disorder in the book follows the format below:
* Disorder
* Description
* Etiology
* Speech and Language Difficulties
* Associated and Other Difficulties
* Assessment
* Intervention Techniques
* Results from Recent Studies
* Prognosis
* References

Seeing Language In Sign: The Work Of William C. Stokoe by Jane Maher (Assistant Professor, Basic Education Program, Nassau
Community College, Garden City, New York) is an informed and informative examination of the life and ground breaking work
of William Stokoe, the man who dared to challenge the commonly held belief that sign language is not a true "language" in
and of itself. Stokoe's study and intense research into the beauty, complexity, and linguistic formatives of what would come
to be called American Sign Language forever transformed how the linguistic community would view the language of the deaf.
A fascinating book of an academic pioneer and his work, Seeing Language In Sign is a highly recommended and invaluable addition
to Linguistic Studies supplemental reading lists and academic reference collections.

Seeing Language in Sign, by Jane Maher, held my attention to the last page. It is a true story about one of the most influencial
hearing individuals in Deaf Society. William Stokoe was a true hero in his brilliance, committment and sacrifices to bring
the true nature of American Sign Language to light. His story is inspiring and infuriating, as the reader learns of the obsticles
placed in Stokoe's way as he strove to prove that ASL is a true language, full of all the richness and bredth of any spoken
language. I was moved to tears several times and as I read the last page I wanted to meet this incredible man in person.
The author wrote in such a manner that I felt as though I knew him personally. In my opinion, he deserves the Nobel Prize
in Education. This book is a MUST READ for anyone who is serious about understanding ASL and Deaf Culture.

Easy read for families and teachers. He discusses using requesting skills to replace instances of severe behavior. He explains
in detail how to get a child to mand for breaks rather than engage in disruptive behavior. However, a person can design a
plan to replace the break requests with whatever the child needs to match the behavior function they are seeking (e.g. attention,
tangibles, etc.).

Dr. Durand presents an easily understood, yet technically tight, presentation of functional communication training. Dr. Durand
provides an excellent demonstration of the applied analysis of behavior and provides a framework for understanding that behavior.
This book should be read by anyone and everyone who works with individuals with communiction difficulties who are engaging
in troubling behavior.
