A very easy-to-read book with simple explanations and definitions. The underlying theme, however, is "if you have concerns,
have your child evaluated by a professional speech - language specialist". There are resources in the back to help you find
the specialist you may need. There are a few suggestions on things you can do to help your child if there is a speech or
language problem.

I am a materials science engineer and read this book to learn about diamond-like carbon, which is a disordered material.
This book covers a lot of topics, and ues a fair deal of equations and figures. It adequately covers most topics about disordered
materials, though I could not find much information about diamond-like carbon. I would not recommend this book as an introductory
text on the subject, but it is good for a reference. The text assumes the reader has fairly good knowledge of geometry,
math, and solid state science, along with materials science. Much of the text could be rewritten to make it more readable,
without reducing content.

This book is good for those who wish for an introduction to clinical aspects of speech language pathology (SLP). However
from a purely scientific standpoint, this book is lacking. It lacks a functional index, so it cannot serve as good reference.
The chapters are not discussed in great detail and proper references are not made. Definitions are helpful but not descriptive.
For example, there is a clear difference between apraxia and dysarthia of speech, but this book doesn't reveal it. I agree
that SPL is a vast field, so I'm impressed that someone tried to condense all the information into a single book. Overall,
this book is decent for the introduction, but you'll quickly outgrow it.

Easterbrooks encourages us to radiate our conception of literacy from deaf children into the sphere of ALL children, but she
fails to offer clear historical precedence.
Please read this book critically with other resources (CHILD'S TALK and CHILDREN'S MINDS).

How is it that a book with 300 pages can cost $80? I see brand new books in book stores all around the US that cost no more
than $30. I guess Ms. Scheetz, along with the publisher, know that college students will be required to use the book, so
why the hell shouldn't they charge $80. Thanks for making my college years thin on cash!

This is a good book and gives a new perspective to the behavior of those with severe autism. The intensive interaction seems
similar to floor time, however I have not studied either in detail. I would have liked more instruction in the intensive
interaction but the book is rather thin. The sensory integration perspective is nice but not really "Ayers" SI as I know
it, just gives a sensory processing perspective and accommodation model to the unique responses to sensory stimuli that those
with autism typically have. This book seems targeted for those beginning to work with children on the severe side of the spectrum.

I took a class at college about communication disorders and the professor used this book. I didn't pick up on any bias or
negativity like the previous raters stated. I haven't read the whole book but it's basically an introductory book about communication
disorders and the book helps you to understand why different disorders are classified and diagnosed the way they are. I probably
would not buy this book for reading on vacation but the class I took was interesting and this booked helped me to clarify
some of the concepts that we were learning. A good introductory book about the subject, I think.
It is an Intro book...

This really is an intro book. It throws a lot of terminology at you, barely scratches the surface on topics and doesn't get
into much detail. It's pretty average.
The cd-rom with the book is about worthless, ironically the sound quality of the clips is poor, leaving you to wonder if you have a hearing problem of your own!

"Introduction to Communication Disorders" is a feeble book rife with inaccuracies. It attempts to take a relateable and
emotional approach to sensitive subject matter and comes off as a biased and unacademic mess.
The information contained in the book often appears as if its the author's own interpretation off the top of their head. For example, in the chapter on augmentative communication, the author attempts to discern the origin of the sign for the concept "America" or the "United States". The author's hypothesis (and they make no attempt to disguise that it is purely their hypothesis) is that the derivation of the sign deals with fence-building and the European explorers' response to the vast lumber in the United States upon arrival in the Americas. Had the author bothered to consult a Deaf linguist, or any member of the Deaf community for that matter, they would have found that the sign represents the union of the states. Had they bothered to consult a history textbook for that matter, the author's would have found that European explorers arriving in North America were not particularly active in the lumber trade or fence-building at the outset of settlement. Their justification for the origin of this sign is a misinformed and unnecessary speculation on the part of the authors.
Instances such as the ones listed above are not uncommon. The book presumes things about the affected individuals that it discusses, often coming off as insensitive, belittling, and lacking in appreciation and understanding for individuals with Communication Disorders. It also presents biases on the author's opinions as to the best approaches for treatments and tends to generalize the needs of the client. When used to teach a university course, it makes for an ineffective tool, both because of the information it contains and the approach it takes to presenting it. The "thought-provoking" boxes every few pages or so that have the student ponder the material they have just learned are reminiscent of something found on "Bill Nye the Science Guy". They seem better suited for young children incapable of understanding the material on any other level.
All in all I found this book very ineffective, insulting, somewhat discriminatory and downright discombobulated. I don't know where the author's got their information, but it certainly wasn't of any use to me as a student.

While this book is clinical in nature, it is very helpful to the lay person in understanding different types of auditory processing
problems and what their effects are on individuals. There are many different types of graphs, plates, tables and figures
which assist in understanding different types of behavior and management and some crossover to ADHD and why. The diagnosis
is better understood along with the various auditory therapies available and necessary to assist in training a person deficient
in certain processing areas. The authors do a good job in explaining the tests for CAPD and what the evaluation results
are based on.There is also an excellent reference list after each particular section for further reading based upon these
authors' research, etc. There are many strategies for success for individuals with CAPD; this book covers so many questions
from the neuroscience to evaluation to the relationship to specific learning problems to treatment and management.

This book is definetely not an intro to a seriously heavy topic, the book
is wordy, the diagrams are all poorly drwn in plain black and white. And believe me when it comes to tracing pathways up to the brain a little color coding would help. Even the most simple concept is ultra wordy and is basically there to show how verbose Mr. Webster is. Im an Audiology doctoral student with a Speech Path and Psych background and this book will confuse the fudge out of anybody(and did)but neuroscience undergrads and neuroscientist.Do not buy, read other sources like Barr's The Human Nervous System or if you have to just share a copy and make copies this book sucks!!
