A technical, but thorough overview of these exciting areas
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 1999-01-24
This book is useful for speech pathologists whose "passion" is aphasia. It is very technical, and is not an "easy read." But it gives the most organized introduction to the two related, but relatively recent fields of neurolinguistics and linguistic aphasiology. Dr. Caplan's writing strength is the organization of the book and the chapters it comprises. A logical sequence is outlined, followed, and summarized. Excellent for those wishing to develop research interests

Good History of the Interpreting Profession
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-25
While this book could stand an update, it is a good overview of the interpreting profession with lots of helpful information (granted, some of which you can find by doing simple Web searches). Anyone thinking about becoming an interpreter would do well to read this book to get an understanding of the history of the profession or to perhaps effectively advocate for better pay rates or working conditions for interpreters. (most of an interpreters work is done in the prep time for a job, but interpreters only get paid for actual on site interpreting time... hmm, perhaps a paradigm shift should be in the works, if all interpreters work together to make that happen.)

technical information for the physician
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2003-11-25
This was a very academic book on stuttering. It was written primarily for physicians, though people who stutter (and their friends/family) may find some value in the book. It describes (in technical detail) and defines stuttering and talks about how stuttering happens. It does not answer the question of why, which is a question that nobody has an answer for, but it does reveal the mechanics of how stuttering occurs. The authors reveal that stuttering is partially genetic, but not always. The book shows how complex a behavior stuttering is.

The book does get into the treatment of stuttering, both for children and adults. The one thing I would like to note about this is that it seems like the sections on treatment is geared more to speech therapists rather than a patient. It gives an idea of how a physician should treat stuttering, but not the actual techniques used. This book is more of a reference than a "self-therapy" book, so if you are thinking about getting this book, please understand what kind of book it is. It is highly technical and detailed for the physician, and only in short sections did I find value in it as a stutterer.

Deaf awareness

Review Date: 2000-11-01
This photo illustrated book is filled with wonderful pictures of disabled children interacting and communicating in different ways. It explains very simply that all people want and need to communicate and that their are lots of ways this can be done. It also explains that just because someone uses sign language or cannot speak, it does not necessarily mean that they are deaf. My class of second graders responded to this book very well. Just to let you know - the book was written and published in London so the fingerspelling alphabet they show at the end of the book is different than our American version. My students found this very interesting as we have been learning to sign all year.

excellent exercises

Speech pathologists working with elementary students will find this to be a very useful book of exercises for voice therapy. Exercises are clear, enjoyable and numerous. For maximum insight though, this book works best when used in conjunction with, "Manual of Voice Treatment" by the same author, which provides indepth information on therapy rationale.

This book has lots of great examples of dialogs to have with your child to help them develope language at every stage of development. Also there are suggested toys and tips on how to use them. However, the exact toys are hard to find to purchase for yourself. But, you can always find something similar. With each age group, there is also a list of sugggested books--which I really like. This book has taught me a lot.

Great for New Parents

Review Date: 2008-04-30
As a soon-to-be grandmother, I find myself looking at everything through the eyes of a new mother. Though I'm not sure that this book would be especially useful for teachers, I DO think it is an excellent resource for new parents on appropriate developmental stages. The charts for Language, Physical and Cognative milestones are worth the price of the book! Much more complete and practical than any baby book that I've seen, and a great tool if there are some developmental delays. I plan to buy a copy for each of my four daughters when they start their family!

Check your copy carefully

Review Date: 2007-03-05
The book is merely a list of toys, generally commercially available, that might stimulate or help a child communicate. My biggest complaint is with the printing. I wondered why young children (3 - 18 months) had so few notations, and discovered why yesterday... My copy jumps from page 50 to page 83. The pages didn't fall out of the binding - they were not included when the book was bound. So check yours when you buy. I am not sure if this a problem unique to me or not. However, I called the publisher and they sent me a replacement immediately and free. I did not have to hassle with sending back the defective one. Excellent customer service!

Misleading Title
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2006-01-11
This book has an over-reaching title and at best is a catalog that describes toys. Placing the words "special needs" in the title implies that it would provide specific pointers for helping children with all sorts and degrees of disabilities like CP, visual impairments, hearing impairments, deafblindness, mental retardation, etc. and might at least have a section on augmentative communications. It offers VERY LITTLE on these topics. As for the dialogues, I found them to be of poor quality and contrary to other stuff I have read. Some of the dialogues for a child who hasn't begun to talk have tons of words and lots of adjectives yet later the same book suggests that teaching the concepts of 'up' and 'down' in the same play session might be too confusing for the child. I don't know what the author's Ph.D. is in but I hope it isn't in speech and language pathology.
