For anyone who finds food controlling their lives, Kay Sheppard's book is a portal to freedom. There are two twelve step programs for dealing specifically with food addiction. Each of these programs has some form of written literature, written by and for food addicts, but Sheppard is a writer as well as a food addict. Her book is a seamless introduction to what this deadly disease is and how to fight it. Without a profusion of distracting emotionalism, she guides the food addict coming out of denial to a new way of living. I recommend it as the very first thing anyone dealing with this disease should read.

I didn't understand until I read this book why I could be so disciplined during the day and after 3:00 p.m. ravage the refrigerator. By 5:00 p.m., I'm ready for a glass of wine and then I'm tired. This book teaches about keeping the sugar levels even throughout the day, even energy and clearer thinking, not to mention a better mood. I'm not doing it perfectly yet, I have good and bad days but at least I know what to do and why. It's a great book!

If you are truly suffering from food addiction then this book will change your life. I only gave it 4 stars because I have had to modify the food plan to fit my life, but the concepts and facts in this book are things I have never heard before. And the way she describes food addicts describes my life.

A severe program for a person with a severe problem

I think the maximum benefit of this book comes to a person with a serious binging problem. The first part of the book describes the nature of food addiction and gives many examples. The second part of the book descibes the recommended food plan for people with a food addiction. The food plan is extreme - but probably appropriate for treating a severe problem.

For the sort of people who sometimes fluxuate between being 30 pounds overweight to being in the normal, healthy BMI range (like me), I found the first part very interesting and could relate to some of it. However, since I don't consider my weight problem to be severe, I would be unwilling to follow such an extreme food plan. Perhaps some would say I am in denial, but I would have to be very desperate and have a very large problem to want to follow a food plan which is so restrictive.

This is an interesting read, whether your weight problem is large or small. I will keep this book around in case my food addiction ever becomes unmanageable, then I will need to try the restrictive food plan. Until then, Weight Watchers seems to be a better solution for me.

What a great find! My aspergers child needed a social skills book that went beyond brushing teeth and getting dressed. This book has much more detailed skills such as playing a game, what to do when you don't win...and so forth. My friends with kids like it so much that they want it for their non autistic kids!

All children could benefit from this book

My son really enjoys reading this book a lot. It approaches social situations and appropriate behavior in a written and pictorial method that he can really relate to, and actually enjoys looking at the book and talking about how to do things the 'right way' and 'wrong way'. He loves to pretend to be a space invader now as a joke.

We took it with us on Holiday, and my nephew on his own picked it up and read the entire book. Every parent I know who has seen it, has commented it would also be beneficial for NT children as well.

highly recommended.

This social skills picture book is instrumental in helping my son learn every day life skills through pictures. I borrowed it from a friend and began using it with him. When she asked me to return it, I decided I needed one too. It keeps my son engaged for at least 20-30 minutes at a time and he is communicating with me through questions and giving answers. I have a lot of books and there are none that quite match up to this one. It's a "must have".

Pros: Nice, basic signs for the beginner, Deaf as well as Hearing. I believe there is a place for this book in all Beginners' ASL libraries. I especially appreciate the attention to 'non-manual signals.' Kudos to the authors/illustrator for a great attempt!

Cons: The illustrations could be improved a lot--especially important for beginners; some seem a bit ambiguous and difficult to understand. There are far too few signs to make this a very important reference book for anyone above beginner level.

Hopes: I hope this reference book is updated with clearer, more elegant artwork and a much expanded concept list.

Thanks: For a great attempt and best regards on improving this book. Hurry before someone else beats you to it; it would be nice if the same authors and illustrator were credited with presenting the first really-fine, new-and-improved handshape dictionary! :)

I highly recommend this book for intermediate students of sign language. If you're a hearing parent of a deaf child, you don't need to read this book first - buy it after you've taken a basic sign language class, because the concepts will make more sense after you've had some basic experience with sign language.

It's the closest thing you can come to for an ASL-English Dictionary. It has been very helpful for us when you watch videos and don't recognize a sign. You can look up the shape and figure it out! It's wonderful! Would recommend it!

Well, I have a few ASL dictionaries, take ASL courses and also have DVD/CD's to practice with at home with. I thought this book would be a plus, but I find it too basic. I think because I'm past the beginning level. Well, this is how it is for me, but I know that someone who is begining will get something out of it. Although, if you are going to learn ASL to be fluent, this book will only be a good reference for a short period of time.

I feel sympathetic toward this author because he is also bipolar and he wrote a book to help others with his best intentions and best resources... however, I found it to be almost childish in its lack of sophistication. I think a young teen or older child would be able to use the book to get started on the road to recovery with bipolar illness. For me, I read the whole book in about 20 minutes. It is full of lists, little drawings and charts and a very personalized and narrow perspective on tools and techniques to help oneself through the ups and downs of the illness. It's not a very good book. In fact, it really is poorly written and lacking in substance. Sorry.

an interesting but perhaps incomplete school of thought

The author clearly cares about those who suffer from depression or bipolar disorder and has produced a substantial book to help them. However, I think it's a little delusional or uninformed to think that medication doesn't play an essential role in the recovery of a great deal of people suffering from depression or bipolar disorder. While I'm also not a fan of unnecessarily medicating people who don't need it, the "holistic" approach isn't enough in many, if not most, cases. Nonetheless, the author's approach may be effective in mild cases of mood disturbance, and may even help the more severe cases somewhat too. Definitely a book worth checking out for an alternative view of healing depression and bipolar disorder. Avery Z. Conner, author of "Fevers of the Mind".

This book completely changed my life! I've been in therapy and on medication for depression for about 20 years with no lasting success. It wasn't until I read this book that I realized that I was suffering from bipolar disorder, not simply depression. With the help of this book, therapy, and medication specifically for bipolar, I am a healthy, happy adult now and am so thankful for Dr. Wider.

My father saw an ad in a local newspaper that the author, Paul Wider, was speaking at a nearby Borders bookstore. I listened to his presentation and purchased his book. Having listened to him speak and as he lives nearby, I was able to see him regularly.

For those that can not see him, the book is an excellent restatement of his thoughts and helpful solutions to the entrenched problem of mild depression. Also, as I read the book, I would time and time again see myself.

It is possible that the reader may not be as devoted in his religion as is Mr. Wider. But that should be put aside by the reader as everything else in his work is compelling and worthy of deep thought as to how you might have some of the same issues.

The issue of depression is addressed in a very pragmatic, direct and practical manner.

I bought this book shortly after I lost my husband to sudden death two months ago. I found the book's methods very useful and even though ideally the method should be undertaken with a therapist, the basic concept which is one of establishing a mental communication with the deceased and expressing one's feelings in words can be done in much simpler ways as well.
The important thing is to let one's mind totally open to anything that may come up...and to go with the flow of emotions and gut feelings, so as to manage to 'talk to' our dear ones and settle 'unfinished business' that death, especially sudden ones, may have left behind and which are the most tormenting feelings a bereaved person may experience.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who lost a loved one and who wants to find peace.

As a health care practitioner and trained IADC therapist, I highly recommend Dr. Botkin's book. It is a sensitive, honest, thorough, and well-researched account of his work with induced after death communications with his clients.I have great respect for his work as I have had the ongoing privilege of experiencing its truth and beauty. I use this book as a resource and I offer it to clients to give them hope and understanding as they move through their deep grief, sadness, and healing. I found it to be one of those few books that is written by a mental health professional who writes, respectfully, with the lay-person in mind and heart.

I learned of this book from some colleagues and my own curiosity led me to purchase and read it. Dr. Botkin weaves his personal story of discovering the Induced After Death Communication together with his clinical and theoretical understanding of these experiences. He shares fascinating case histories as he describes in detail these phenomena that are apparently far more common than one would think.

As a psychotherapist for nearly thirty years, Induced After-Death Communication was riveting to me. I have had many clients who sought relief from grief, anger, or guilt towards a deceased friend or family member who tried to get through these overarching emotions with cognitive tools alone. The work was slow and they could get tired of plowing the same ground over and over, and often give up in the name of "acceptance". "Empty-chair" work, where they would talk to and for the deceased worked better, but they tended to snap back to old feelings after remembering, "It was just my imagination." Several times, my clients had spontaneous realizations that they must have had an ADC while doing these sessions, and these were very healing. But getting them to these moments was not something you could count on. Something more was needed.

After reading Botkin/Hogan's book, I determined to get this training, and did. In the years since then I have found IADC to be not only effective and reliable, but it does its work in a short period of time. As a therapist, what more could you ask for?

I think that reading this book can give anyone who faces grief (and that's all of us) not only a new means of getting through grief (which is the healing process), but also a new motive to do so. When you understand that processing the sadness first is a means of "going-on", not "getting-over", it changes the whole set up for paying attention to grief at all. That's really good news for everyone.

Couldn't put it down!

As a licensed professional counselor who practices EMDR (Eye Movement Desesitization and Reprocessing) which is the core technique used to induce after death communication, I was anxious to read Dr. Botkin's book. The stories that Dr. Botkin tells are truly amazing and riveting. I liked that the book focused on the evidence and research done in this area. While the clinical evidence is fascinating and makes for great reading, at no point does Dr. Botkin lapse into sensationalism, nor does he draw erroneous conclusions that this is "proof" of an afterlife. However, he makes a good case that these techniques are genuinely beneficial and healing and does so in a linear, analytical and even-handed manner. A great book for counselors, those who have lost family or friends and those interested in apparent glimpses into the afterlife. I liked that the book was written without the "psychobabble" or "new age speak" often found in this subject matter, making it an exciting, moving touching and accesible read to the general pulic.

I originally borrowed this book from the library, and ended up ordering myself a copy so I could highlight pages (which I never do, but the information was so pertinent to my child's condition). I've never felt compelled to write a review before, but wanted to recommend this book highly. This book helped me realize some of my child's issues that two speech and language pathologists did not even mention. It also described the evaluation results and scores in a thorough manner (which the SLPs also neglected to do). It is important for parents to educate themselves so they can be partners in the work their children and speech therapists will undertake. The book lists examples of situations that children with certain disorders/conditions experience (a light bulb went off for me, it was so important to understand how the condition affects my child's experiences). Also, suggestions for helping the parent and teacher work more effectively with the child are included. Highly recommended.

This book is worth $100. Actually, it is priceless. If your child is language delayed, fussy and quirky, more mercurial than his/her peers...this book will help you identify these behaviors and discover the reasons behind your child's actions. Finally, you will understand the communication difficulties your child is experiencing and you will understand why he/she acts as they do.

This book is easy to read. You will recognize your child in the identified behaviors and you will discover that there may be multiple issues. Our child had been diagnosed with intermittent middle-ear fluid by a highly skilled team: ENT, Speech Pathologist and Audiologist. But it was this book that help us pinpoint the other behaviors and discover/address the Auditory Processing issue. Our team was satisfied with the diagnosis of Middle Ear Fluid for our child's language articulation issues...and this book is helping us get our child the help she needs.

Second only to Paul Ogden's "Silent Garden" (which treats of a broader range of issues than does "Choices") this is the most balanced and readable book specifically dealing with deaf education and communications options that we (hearing parents of profoundly deaf toddler) have yet found. There is a very good mix of professional articles and actual parental stories, recently supplemented by updates from the children themselves, now mostly grown. This is the only book of its kind that we have seen that provides actual audiograms for most stundets/subjects, something hearing parents MUST have in order to relate the stories in "Choices" to THEIR kids' situation. (I only wish AIDED audiograms had been consistently included as well, since those are nearly as important as basic audiograms.) I dont suggest tinkering with success, but I do think somewhat more information on the failure rates for given options should have been given, since it is far too easy for us as parents to imagine OUR child as being the succesful student portrayed in each section, thus short-chaging the down-side risks of each option. Also, it might have been nice if a few more stories of deaf people who DIDNT live in Maryland at some point in their life could have been included. That's hardly a real criticsm, though, and I conclude by this book highly.

It presents a clear, un-biased outline of all options available for your child, (although I'm biased and believe that the Cued Speech option is a no-brainer. :-) but its still a excellent book and well-written and edited. This is a great book!!

After our child was diagnosed with deafness, we were overwelmed with so much information, so many decisions to make. This book offers a nonbiased, comprehensive outline of the educational options available for deaf children. I use it as a reference manual and read it three or four times after my son's diagnosis. We're four years down the road now and I'm going to read it again. There is a wealth of information here. It is the first book I recommend parents read after finding out their child is deaf.

I bought this book thinking it would be geared more for the spouse of an ADD person. But this book was actually more of an advice book FOR the ADD person themselves. There was a large emphasis on education; encouragment and tips to help the ADD person in continuing their education. Again, geared towards the ADD person and not the significant other/spouse on how to deal with it all.

When I read an article based on this book, I cried! Finally I had found someone who knew what I was going through. My husband is very much like the husband who wrote this book and I was relieved to realize that he is not so odd! This book saved me! "Honey, Are You Listening?" gave me hope and practical solutions for the difficulties I face with my husband. I am finally able to understand my husband and this helps me to be more patient with him. With the suggestions in this book I am able to help my husband be a better version of himself and I am able to at least try not to ask him to do things that are beyond him. I now understand the most effective way to approach him and to talk over potentially explosive subjects with him. In my marriage I am the spouse with ADHD. In contrast to the previous reviewer my wife and I found this book to be a great help. It helped both of us to understand my condition and according to my wife it helped her understand that I wasn't against her. In describing ADHD behavior rather than excusing it, I felt that the book gave some useful tools for change. Of course if the ADHD spouse is a jerk and unwilling to change, then that's a different story. The book is written from a Christian perspective so it was also helpful to find a Christian resource that said something more than the usual cliche's like, "just try harder"..."you should just forgive him, etc." I would recommend this book if you believe that ADD/ADHD might be affecting your marriage and you're looking for help

I appreciated this book simply because it was the first book of its kind to address how difficult it is to live and love an ADHD adult. I took what I needed from this book and left the rest. I do recommend this book since as far as I know it is still one of its kind.

First of its kind, very useful information. It gets 4 stars simply because of the price of $55.00 which I think is outrageous for a soft bound book of its kind

a brilliant insight into V.C.F.S

Educating Children with V.C.F.S is a book I wish I had had from the begining. It covers ALL aspects of teaching a child with a 22q deletion and throws light on a lot of the often perplexing conundrum of problems associated with the syndrome. Highly recommended for parents an educators alike and although maybe a bit pricey, worth every cent.

This book is amazing! It is a "must have" for parents, educators and physicians dealing with children who have been diagnosed with velocardiofacial syndrome. I wish that someone would have handed me this book when our son was diagnosed with 22Q11.2 (velocardiofacial syndrome). Educators especially can glean helpful information from it's pages to better understand the cognitive defecits presented by the syndrome. It is worth every penny of the price. Thank You Donna Cutler-Landsman for taking to time to compile such a comprehensive and concise book.

Excellent subject for parents of children with VCFS

What makes this book so special is that it deals exclusively with the educational needs of children with VCFS - from preschool forward throughout the educational system. It addresses complex topics in a straightforward, easily understandable way and is helpful to parents *and* educators.

The only reason I downgraded it to a 4 is the astronomical price. $55 is a LOT to pay for the 'privilege' of owning this book. Take at least $25 off the price and then this would be a 5 star rating.

I'd recommend visiting the VCFS Educational Foundation website for additional info: www.vcfsef.org

Great reference for parents as well as educators

I found the book to be very thorough and helpful. It first gives an overview of different areas affected by VCFS (22q) written by well-respected researchers and clinicians. The second half is the real gem, though. It has clear and readable information on how kids with VCFS typically learn, and then good recommendations on how to help them learn. The second half is divided into sections based on grade/age, but there are valuable nuggets in all of them, regardless of the age of the child you're trying to help.

For teachers, it is an invaluable tool in setting up accommodations to help kids with 22q learn more effectively. For parents, it provides a way to easily share information with schools - information that previously was either not available or scattered in various papers and books. The fact that the book is written and edited by respected professionals gives it more credence than just the word of a parent.
