despite the coincidences and the parlor room confession. The author shows us stuff we usually don't see. Drug trials and back stage drug politics. And Massachusetts. Watch out for jelly fish and slimy scientists.

I really enjoyed reading this novel and had a hard time putting it down! The aspect of the novel that I enjoyed most was the parallel stories. I found both stories incredibly engaging and was thrilled to see it all come together at the end. This is one of those books that consumes you and makes you forget that you are flipping pages and reading. The concept of memoriane is very interesting as well, especially in a time where all sorts of medical research is being conducted. The situations that the characters in the novel find themselves in cause th reader to experience his/her own moral dilemma. I am looking forward to reading more by this author!

Braver's novel struck me as nothing but genius. He took fascinating ideas and translated them into beautiful literature. As a nurse, I pick up easily on medical inconsistencies on television or in writing, but I was thoroughly impressed by Braver's knowledge and presentation of pathophysiology and pharmacology. "Flashback" is an extraordinary piece of work that combines modern medical concepts with a brilliant imagination. As this was my first Braver novel, I can't wait to read his other books. I would be happy to recommend Gary Braver to anyone.

Braver has written a thoroughly enjoyable thriller in Flashback. This is the first book of his that I have read and I will definitely be checking out his others. The story evolves around an ethical dilemma faced by a drug company. The company's decisions are certainly not surprising and definitely to be expected. One wonders almost every day whether decisions like this are made by the big drug companies in the world. I think they are. Very interesting storyline to involve alzheimer's a disease which surely we are all afraid of suffering.

Braver joins Lincoln Child, Douglas Preston, Greg Iles, James Rollins, Michael Palmer and others on my list of favourite thriller writers.

Imagine swimming in a deep cup of dark brown coffee. The smell of the thick liquid tantalizing to the olfactics, the taste rich and bitter all at once to the buds on the tongue, the visual of the slopping liquid so mixed with light creams and dirty mochas that it creates such an immense combinations of feelings deep in the mind. The emotions and feelings brought about from this book, are felt just as the feeling of, perhaps, swimming in coffee.
It's hot and sticky, steaming and burning, deep and dark, troubled and comforting, rich and bitter, light and dirty, staining to the mind and scalding to the senses. You're reaching for the edge of the cup (the pages) every second that passes, only to fumble back into the darkness so comforting and mind-numbing. This book will wrap you in it's liquid so drenching and overwhelming, you will beg for more.

One of the best books of prose you will ever read.

'Coma Therapy' is both hopeful and cynical; witty and serious; and brings all the boyish charm in the world with every brightly delivered line. With each story, Victorino pulls you into his past and makes you taste every detail as if the memory was yours. The entire book leaves no room for disappointment, and keeps you entertained until the very last word. From simplest of experiences to the most epic of events, whether it be about turtles in a pond or an unforgettable friendship with a drug addict plumber, 'Coma Therapy' flashes you a devilish grin and practically dares you to read on. And if you have any sense in your head, you will.

Victorino takes on the world in this book. With stories about sex, lies, death, drugs, love, friendship, and religion, it covers the spectrum of all human emotions and thoughts. I smiled, held my breath, laughed and was nearly brought to tears (not an easy feat, mind you). Currently on my fourth or fifth time through I still do all of those things. The descriptive nature of his writing, and the journalistic diary type content will keep you reading it over and over. BUY THIS BOOK.

Coma Therapy is a window revealing the true inside of an amazing author who hides nothing. The incredible sense of bare emotion and honesty written on each page hooks a reader deep into their heart, leaving no chance of release. Eric Victorino is an amazing artist and inspiration; Coma Therapy is my evidence.

Eric Victorino is one of my favorite vocalist/lyricist and this is his first stab at a book of thoughts, stories, poems, and ideas.

"Come Therapy" is easily relateable and most of the stories are short, concise and void of any babble.

Eric rants about many things including apathy, the truth about being on the road, our need for true and sincere feelings and relationships, meeting the "devil" and how their are "monsters everywhere."

He helps you see the beauty in the little things in life.

You can feel every word and after reading this you will definitely not feel lethargic, unconscious and unable to feel as if you were in a coma. You will be alert, appreciative, and ready to arise to the occasion that is life.

Simply put "Coma Therapy" is a journal of thoughts and stories about life and all its' splendor and sadness but it never dwells on the sadness. Come Therapy appreciates the sad, happy, dirty, seedy, and beauty that is our life.

5 out of 5 and everyone should buy this and then check out his new book coming out very soon.

I've read all of Kathryn Mackel's books to date and _The Surrogate_ is my favorite. Great writing, great storytelling, great characterization, great dialogue. It all makes for a great read. After reading the book, I found myself inspired to seek after God at a deeper level. Something I don't experience much after reading fiction. Mackel's writing style is fast-paced but intriguing. She writes with passion, and no where is that more seen than in _The Surrogate_.

This story will have you on the edge of your seat.

The Surrogate is a very engrossing novel with intriguing characters and a strong plot. Unlike most suspense novels, this one actually kept me guessing and I loved the twists and turns along the way. This story was not predictable and sometimes it raised the hair on the back of my neck. So if you are looking for a story that will give you the willies and keep you on the edge of your seat praying for the safety of the characters, then you must read this book.

The Surrogate is a thrilling book that will captivate you from beginning to end. The writing is superb! The writing style allows the reader to feel the emotions right along with the characters. There were moments in the book when the actions of one of the characters frustrated and angered me like crazy! However, Ms. Mackel does an excellent job of fully developing the characters, giving the reader enough information to sympathize with even the meanest and most irresponsible character. There wasn't a dull moment in the entire book. It was a fast paced book full of awesome twists.

The book had several wonderful themes. It illustrated how God always works for the good of those who love Him. Good can come out of even the worst situations. Also, the ending of the book is an excellent example of the impact being loving and compassionate could have on others, even when it's undeserved.

If you're looking for a suspenseful, well-written, page-turner with an excellent message, this book is perfect!

This book was truly awesome. In the first book Life Support, I enjoyed the story and the characters. This book was so riveting I could not put it down. The characters and story have stayed with me and I look forward to finding more gems from Robert Whitlow.

Secrets and Layers

Review Date: 2005-04-28
Whitlow is a master at peeling back the secrets and layers of Southern settings and characters. After one of his best books, "Life Support," I was thrilled to see a sequel. To be honest, though, I wasn't sure what material he had to work with. Others may disagree, but I loved the open-ended conclusion of "Life Support."

Once again, we are pulled into the psychotic world of Rena, a woman living with guilts and secrets. She begins seeing mysterious visions, and unwinds before our eyes. Whitlow portrays her with perfection. Along the way, Alex, her lawyer, begins to look for ways to disengage herself from this nightmarish client, while also looking for ways to build a deeper relationship with Ted Morgan, a Christian music minister. Their relationship goes through ups and downs, but they are drawn closer as the troubles of Rena's past loom larger.

The ending provides some satisfying emotional moments, even if a few of the mystery aspects are wrapped up a bit quickly. Although the book didn't hold the same sway over me as the first in the Santee Series, it's definitely a must for Whitlow fans.

Wow! What a story!

Louis Proof is a teenager in East Orange, New Jersey. When the book opens, Louis one of the most popular students in his class. He is helpful, kind, and smart. He accepts an invitation to go to a wonderful amusement park where all of your wildest dreams come true. After things go a little wrong there, Louis leaves and mysteriously collapses and falls into a coma.

When Louis awakens, it is three months later and everything is different. Many adults are being replaced with replicas of themselves -- and they are a child's dream. They let their kids do anything they want. Slowly, Louis realizes that he is the earth's only chance. Earth is being taken over by Galonious, a very funny but evil person. He takes away a person's inhibitions and promises freedom. Some people steal and vandalize while others commit murder.

I spent some time speaking with my fifth-graders about this concept and I believe that they found it as scary as I did. The story doesn't come to a conclusion, as there are supposed to be sequels. The hero is also African-American, which is a first, and there are many references to popular culture which makes the story fun.

Enjoy reading THE MARVELOUS EFFECT!

Most of my kids have never read a book over 100 pages, yet they finished this book ahead of schedule. It's a very smart book with great vocabulary and themes that are rich for discussuion. This author has written a book that kids can see, hear and feel.

This book is different from other books by this author but
excellent. As usual it is full of interest and character.
The difference is there are historical flashbacks and that
can make it more difficult to read flipping between now
and "then". However, I'd suggest the new reader start
with her earlier books first before reading this book.
Then you will appreciate this book more.

Not exactly a historical mystery, Rosewood's Ashes is a modern murder mystery set in the world of history -- the academic study of the racially-motivated 1923 tragedy that occurred in Rosewood, Florida. But this is no dry tale. The plot is fast-paced and focused even as it alternates between the the present and the past. The world of Rosewood, 1923, comes to life along with that of modern Gainesville. And the relationship and banter between the unlikely detecting duo of Tory Travers and David Alvarez is lively and entertaining. Rosewood's Ashes kept me turning pages well into the night.

A wonderful book from Aileen Schumacher! This Floridian engineer and author manages to integrate her fascinating series characters with a very true historical tragedy in ROSEWOOD'S ASHES. The sad story of what happened to the African-American community of Rosewood, Florida shows how much the nation has progressed, I hope.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, a mystery set in current times with the events of 1923 when a white mob attacked a black town of Rosewood, Florida. The mystery unfolded well, covering both current happenings and past events. I found the flashback scenes fit into the story nicely, without being abrupt at all. Fascinating historical story, and I thought the relationship between Tory and David has matured quite nicely and believably.

Excellent and fascinating story

Tory Travers is having a bad day--she's sick, pregnant, unsure what to do with her boyfriend, and she's got to go back to her family home because her father is in a coma after a hit-and-run accident. Or was it an accident? David Alvarez, her boyfriend, decides to come along.

When they land in Florida, Tory's day gets worse. A young woman they met on the plane is killed by a speeding car. With Tory's reputation from her troubled youth, she is an immediate suspect. Although cop-Alvarez is able to turn off the pressure this time, he decides to use his spare time investigating the killing.

The evidence (and author Aileen Schumacher's story) keeps returning to the tragic events of 1923 when a white lynch mob descended on the black town of Rosewood, burning it to the ground. Still, what possible connection could there be between an ancient racial injustice and contemporary murder?

Schumacher does an excellent job balancing between the present and the past, drawing parallels, and letting the suspense of the horrors of 1923 add to the sense of danger in the present. ROSEWOOD'S ASHES is a fine mystery with enough twists and turns and red herrings to keep any reader interested. Where it excells, though, is in its descriptions of people and their relationships. Tory's relationship with her father and with Alvarez. Lissy's relationship with 'The Man,' and Alvarez's relationships with just about everyone.

I recommend this book highly.

Since our family experienced a horrible car accident nearly two years ago that has left our brilliant, now 11-year-old, daughter fully dependent on caregivers, I could relate to much of what Philippe and Stephane shared. It is most helpful to know we are not alone in our feelings of sadness, anger, and determined hope. I would love to learn more about this courageous family.

"Only His Eyes Say Yes" is a truly wonderful saga about a family's struggle for freedom after a man was suddenly "locked in" by a severe stroke. Though it is down-to-earth and humerous, the book reaches deep into many of the tougher unexplored corners of human emotion.

I was profoundly struck at the very beginning of the book by the occurrence of and Philippe's recollection of dreams during his two-month coma. Somehow his brain kept functioning during that period, and it even had the wherewithal to begin work on the huge unexpected task of starting a new life. That experience provides us all with a tremendous insight into the powerful workings of the unconscious mind. I simply had no idea that such processes occurred. Carl Jung would have had a scientific field day with that data. And present day psychologists should learn important lessons from it.

Thanks, Philippe and Stephane Vigand.
