Published in coordination with the CCFA, this book includes information on diagnostic tests, doses and side effects of IBD medications, traveling with IBD, and strategies for coping with ostomies. In addition, there is material on health insurance, nutrition and exercise, IBD in older people, children and teenagers. Overall, it's a good reference book, especially the sections on nutrition, exercise and living with IBD. Recently revised.

The only IBD Book you NEED to have

Banks, Present and Steiner-Grossman have produced what I think is the best book on Inflammatory Bowel Disease on the market. Once again endorsed by the CCFA (an indicator of quality), this book is extremely well written and definitely the best laid out book on the market. It's always been a pet peeve of mine that IBD books never seem to have any good pictures or illustrations and this book has a plethora of both. The information is still your standard IBD stuff - overview of the diseases, medical/surgical treatment, emotional issues, IBD in children, in pregnancy, etc. - but it is easy to read and very accessible in attitude. If you have to choose just one IBD book, I'd recommend this one.

The fastest cure for ulcerative colitis
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-08
I first discovered this book in a public library in 1980.. I had been on and off the standard drugs for ulcerative colitis for over four years and was frustrated with the headaches the drugs gave me and the thought of having to take the drugs all my life. I decided it was worth a try. I simultaneously stopped taking the drugs (sulfasalizine) and began fasting, I fasted for perhaps three days while continuing my regular responsibilities, and all symptoms went away for six months when previously I could not stay symptom free longer than about two weeks. I have since learned that I can best maintain long term freedom from symptoms by periodic fasting, one day per week, but a rigid schedule is not required. I met a man who said he was cured by herbal medicine, but it took him 6 months. I have not brought the drugs for twenty years. One thing I have learned that is not in the book is that brown rice is very easily digested and is for me the easiest food to eat if I am having a temporary problem with colitis, but fasting is also required. To avoid recurrences it would be well to avoid excessive stress, but when that can not be done, the system is not prepared to digest food, so fast.

The book also refers to other diseases and conditions for which fasting has been used.

How did Goldstein die?

This book is a fascinating account of a dramatic recovery from a very serious illness through fasting. The only question I have is: Whatever happened to Dr. Jack Goldstein? I can find nothing about him after 1977, except that he's no longer alive. If he ended up dying from the disease he thought he had cured, it would make me think twice about the long term benefits of fasting.

Having tried it all. The SCD, the paleolithic diet, the juice diet, macrobiotic diet, traditional medicine -- working with doctors, chiropractors, accupunture, massage. All of it made me more sick until I read this book. Do a google search on this title.

A personal testamonial in the vein of a true-confession story, only this story is not of love and betrayal, but of a young man who, through recieving much conventional medical treatment for ulcerative colitis, had been so damaged by the medicos that he approached death. In the nick of time he discovered natural hygiene, fasted for over 40 days and began to recover health and enjoyment of life. Gruesome in its detailed description of the disease and shocking in its recounting of the brutal and constitution-destroying treatments he received, interesting in the detailed inner-experience of a long-time water faster...

Being a person who went to the doctor and was handed a pamphlet on Metamucil, and told to `cope because there is no cure for IBS'....this book was a HUGE HELP! There is a lot of basic info, but also some solid advice with strong references to other experts. I loved the way it put my mind at ease regarding so many of my symptoms. This book is the beginning of the long journey to self-help for me. It gave me hope and understanding instead of telling me to "cope".

IBS - Finally makes sense!

After suffering for more than 20 years with IBS and going to every gastroenterologist I could find with no good results, this book is the only one that has made sense of this whole thing. Finally, someone knows exactly how I've been feeling and what to do about it. The suggestions in the book were a great help in my battle with IBS. He was compassionate and discrete, explaining symptoms and diagnosis in a way that my other doctors never did. Thank you Dr. Salt. I can't wait to read other books. I've ordered another one today and can't wait for it to get here. I would recommend this book to others suffering with IBS, fibromyalgia and other related disorders.

I had great expectations for this book. Not too many books include a step by step program for a road to recovery. Unfortunately, despite the title, this book does not provide one either. It lists steps, but they are more informative than an actual road to recovery. So I was very disappointed. The book is, however, an excellent reference for someone who has recently been diagnosed with IBS or for family/friends of an individual with IBS that wants to get a better understanding of the disorder.

Good information, but bad book.

This book contained some very useful and helpful information regarding IBS. However, the organization of the information was horrible. He mentions things without explaining them. Then later in the book he explains them, but there is no way to connect the two chapters until you have read them. He reiterates himself to no end and on trivial matters. It is not a good book to read and doesn't focus on IBS as the title might lead one to think.

Best book on Crohn's yet
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-11-08
There are three reasons why I think this is the best cookbook out there for anyone who has Crohn's or colitis.
1. Roscher's book does NOT follow the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, which is ridiculously complicated (and expensive) besides being not proven to even work. All the research I've personally done supports Mrs. Roscher's approach, not the SCD's long list of restrictions and 'illegal' foods.
2. The recipes in this book are really good, and easy to make.
3. Roscher uses inexpensive ingredients you can find anywhere.

Okay, I need to add a fourth reason -
4. I have not had a flare-up since I started using this book about one year ago. I'd say my symptoms have reduced 80% since I really got into this book. I have tried nearly half the recipes in Roscher's book and...this leads me to reason 5:
5. My entire family enjoys these recipes, not just me. So, I don't have to cook a special meal for myself and one for everyone else - everyone shares these meals.

If you are recently diagnosed as having Crohn's or colitis and you want to avoid the confusion of complicated, expensive diet regimens which only serve to oversensitize you to many foods, try this book first. You will thank me (and Mrs. Roscher).

I've bought two other copies of this book for friends suffering from IBD and they love it too.

Doctors will tell you a million different things about diet once you're diagnosed with IBD. Do your own research (and don't confuse IBD with IBS). Start with the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America. And buy this cookbook - it's the simplest, cheapest, and most delicious way to control your diet while still ENJOYING FOOD.

Wonderful Book for People with UC
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-29
I was diagnosed with UC in December of 2001. I studied up on the disease to educate myself and I found recipes here and there that I liked. The problem was that many of the recipes required the purchasing of expensive items at the health food store that I had never heard of. Another problem was that the food was stuff that I normally wouldn't eat. This book is perfect for an average UC patient. By average I mean you're not used to spending a ton of money on your nightly dinner. These recipes taste wonderful and I have already noticed an improvement in my flare-ups. The rest of your family won't tell the difference that the mac and cheese is bowel friendly. I think this is the best UC cook book currently out on the market. I love it!

I have ordered this book 3 times - for myself, for my MIL, and for a friend. We all agree it's easy to read; has good, practical information; offers flexibility to try some food you love in small amounts or rarely instead of a rigid NEVER again! We find this book easy to use for quick reference, too. The information in the book has made all of our lives better as we've taken many of the suggestions to modify our diets or the way we cook some foods.

If you have Crohn's, IBS, or other bothersome gut problems, I think this is the most useful book to have on your bookshelf. This is the book I return to repeatedly.

Do NOT think this book will tell you anything about IBD!

Dr. Scala is well known as an arthritis expert and in my opinion, he should have stayed in that arena. I have never read a book referring to Inflammatory Bowel Disease in its title that said less about the disease! This is basically a nutrition book, which is fine, but why market it as something specific about colitis and Crohn's? This seems purposely misleading to me and the blasé attitude toward sufferers of these diseases does not induce a close read of the material. Not necessary to purchase.

A great self-help guide for IBS sufferers

Review Date: 1998-11-02
Although this book does not focus on Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) exclusively, this is an excellent book for IBS sufferers to start with when trying to ease their symptoms through dietary restrictions. Not only does "Eating Right" give a fairly thorough list of possible "trigger" foods, but it also includes an important chapter on how to supplement a restricted diet with vitamins. Whenever I have a question on what I should or possibly should not eat, I take a look at "Eating Right" to create a baseline. It's a book that can be used over and over again as a reference. It's definitely worth it.

In this book, Dr. Scala, a leading nutiritionist, provides diet and nutrition information so that people with IBD can help themselves find relief and achieve better health. The author has designed a drug free food and lifestyle program which includes: developing a personal testing program to identify foods that aggravate, cause or relieve flare-ups; "safe foods" and tips on reading labels; total fitness and stress reduction techniques; food allergies (including lactose, alcohol, and sugar intolerance); IBD and children; and recommended vitamin supplements. Recommended for folks who need clear instructions to develop their own dietary program. A useful book!

Review Date: 1999-04-30
This book is commonly recommended by the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation, but I didn't think it was very good. The observations were haphazard, and some sounded like the author was making them up as he went along. He has a kind of puppy-ish enthusiasm, but he goes off half-cocked a lot. It's also full of repetition. There are much better books out there, both on nutrition and on these illnesses.

Sensationalist Title but a Good Resource

Review Date: 2000-06-30
Despite the title (which I think is unduly sensationalist), The Angry Gut is a well-written, clear reference for colitis and Crohn's sufferers. Grant is a straightforward, clinical writer and some readers might be put off by his use of widespread, medical terminology. Like any IBD books, the drug sections become quickly dated, but Grant supplies good information on existing drugs and surgeries. He falls into the common pitfall of many M.D.-authored books of completely ignoring the emotional aspects of inflammatory bowel disease and does not seek to refer readers to resources that might provide support. This is a solid, useful reference for IBD patients.

Honest and forthright portrayal of IBD-great guide.

If you or a loved one has the disease-this is a must read. It "decodes" a lot of what the gastroenterology and colo-rectal surgery community gives to patients. This is a nice technical(but not too technical) discussion of IBD in all variations and your choices in terms of drug therapy or surgery. It also is very honest about research and likelihood of medical innovations or breakthroughs. It allows IBD patients to ask great questions and challenge medical practitioners. It's a great handbook for all IBD victims.

Overview of the symptoms, diagnosis, complications, and treatment of IBD. Dr. Thompson discusses how Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis affect the gut and also explores patients' social and sexual concerns, plus treatments and recent research. Worth a look. If you liked this book, you might want to look at another book by Dr. Thompson entitled Gut Reactions

Good Info on IBD, but overly technical

Review Date: 1997-03-04
This is a technical overview of IBD covering anatomy, how the gut works, history and epidemiology, possible causes, treatments and complications and medications (not entirely up to date as the book was published in 1989). The book claims in it's foreword to be written for the layman, but be forewarned the anatomy chapter is quite detailed with lots of medical terminology. Let's put it this way, after reading this chapter you will be able to understand the research reports in the national newsletter! (Do you know the difference between your sub-mucosa and your myenteric plexus?) The remainder of the book is more 'reader-friendly' with lots of good information for the newly diagnosed.

Technical but informative.

This book is technical, but a good resource for individuals who know nothing about Chron's Disease. The author explains in exacting detail how Chron's disease affects people. Most Doctors do not get technical with their patients, and I feel that this book helped me to understand how and why this disease affects me. I now feel very comfortable talking with my Doctor regarding treatment

This book has a lot of good nutritional information that someone with Crohn's or Colitis needs to be aware of, in a very readable format. However, some of the recipes sound questionable for people with these conditions. My family members with Crohn's and colitis cannot tolerate foods with chili powder, peppers, etc. Some of the recipes use these type of ingredients, but you can modify them to suit your individual needs. All in all, a good nutritional book for Crohn's & colitis.

This compilation of various articles written by IBD experts from across the country is an official Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America publication and that endorsement alone should indicate its quality and content. Every chapter in this book is well written and scrupulously up-to-date with excellent references and resources. Chapter subjects are very holistic in that both the medical and emotional aspects of IBD are represented. There is even a chapter on the use of alternative medicine in the treatment of IBD! Definitely purchase this book for your library.
