i felt that the book was very informative with good information about how antibiotics are abused and how parents are mostly to blame for it. it also gives ideas on how to treat certains colds with other medicines and natural stuff too.

A must read for parents interested in using less antibiotics

I am a pediatrician and am extremely concerned about antibiotic overusage. This book will help all parents understand the risks and benefits of antibiotic use and give them a greater understanding of when antibiotics should be prescribed for their children. Learn that it is alright to tell your doctor that you'd rather not use medications if they are not absolutely necessary. This book is well written, easy to understand, and a must read for parents. Makes a great gift as well for a new parent! I recommend it highly.

This book should be given at every baby shower!!

Come on parents, admit it, which one of us hasn't left our child's pediatrician's office at least once, feeling a bit miffed and irritated that the doctor denied the need for antibiotics, when you were absolutely convinced that one was warranted.... If you raised your hand, then this book is a must read and will prove to be a valued addition to your home medical library.

As a registered nurse in the pediatric and adult settings for many years, I have seen first hand the devastating effects of patients infected with antibiotic resistant organisms. It is frightening enough just to watch a patient try to recover from such an illness, let alone try to care for them when traditional therapies have failed.

Unfortunately, the frequency and difficulty of treating these types of patients have become an increasingly alarming scenario in today's acute care facilities. We are long overdue in the rethinking of the way antibiotics are currently prescribed in this country.

With their new book, BREAKING THE ANTIBIOTIC HABIT A Parent's Guide to Coughs, Colds, Ear Infections, and Sore Throats, Drs. Offit and Bell have successfully provided clear and interesting discussions about the necessity for prudent use of antibiotic therapy for our children as well as the adult population. It also provides surprisingly simple and clear guidelines for caregivers whose children display symptoms of coughs, colds, ear infections and sore throats. It is a needed refresher course for experienced parents, and proves to be an important reference for all first time parents and grand-parents.

Bravo! Drs. Offit and Bell, thank you for this timely and important book! What an informative little page turner!!

A Must Read for Every New Parent!

Being a new parent, I was worried when my 9 month old had a high fever and a cough that lasted more than a day. The doctor told me to keep my child comfortable and monitor his symptoms. If he did not improve in a few days, I was to call back. I felt helpless. I had collected numerous books about babies and what to expect the first year: but none of these books had the information I wanted to know such as how do I comfort a coughing baby at night. Breaking the Antibiotic Habit is wonderful. I read it from cover to cover the day it arrived. Now I am more confident that I can take care of my child when he is sick. I know what to watch for and can communicate better with my child's pediatrician.

Great Book!

I just happened to glimpse this book at my local library and checked it out. What an informational storehouse! I am the parent of two small children, who just recently have been coming down with coughs, colds, ear infections. Nowhere in any of my "pediatrition handbooks" did I get such an in depth understanding of common childhood problems and how and when antibiotics can help and when they can't. I wish I read this book last winter when I needed the information. I am buying this book and highly reccomend it to all parents. Read it cover to cover!

"A great alternative resource for Herpes - very informative!!"

This book is what all of the other herpes self-help books are not. It is also not what the other books are. The writing style is a bit technical but the content is understandable by non-medical people like me. It covers a discussion of many of the "alternative" treatment modalities strictly from the standpoint of how well they are or are not documented in scientific and medical literature. The author makes no claims about miraculous cures and generates no sales pitches, but he has gone to considerable effort to dig up some promising alternative treatments that are also effective for other conditions too. Some of the supplements and herbs have a lot of documentation supporting them and some have very little. Just the facts clearly laid out.

I know several individuals who are using BHT to suppress their herpes outbreaks with complete success and no apparent side effects. I wish I had read this book when my grandmother was suffering from her shingles. I highly recommend it!

I have read a few books on homeopathy and then when I got into it myself I bought a few of my own books. This one is by far the best book. I've worn it in with in a few weeks refering to it and reading just the basics on prescribing. I like the knowledge and the explantions she gives in the book and the work sheet on how to make the right choice on the remedy.

Definitly worth every penny

Handy for beginner homeopaths!

I have been seeing a professional homeopath, but he's not always available. This book allows me to prescribe for minor illness that my kids are experiencing at onset, sometimes nipping it in the bud. It has also given me insight into the homeopathic process and has greatly enhanced my communication with my homeopath. It is organised logically and written in plain english. A great starting point for those interested in homeopathy. There is also a matching remedy kit available from Miranda Castro which would be handy.

I've raised two healthy children to adulthood using this book, which I found in my local Whole Foods in the early 90's. Because my husband had a wonderful homeopathic MD in France, I've looked in vain for a solid homeopathic practitioner in my area, only to find that Castro's book makes me more knowledgeable than all those I've tried. The indexing system, as well as the complete description of each remedy and all symptoms associated with it, creates a valuable guide to dealing with acute conditions of all sorts. I'd love to see a new edition reflecting recent research and including ALL the Boiron individual remedies; there are a few available in the health food stores that are not covered in this one.

I love this book!!!!! It is extremely informative and has helped our family's health problems immensely. I love the Oregano products recommended in this book. They WORK!!!! My child's asthma has completely disappeared, and my chronic sinus infections are gone. No more antibiotics every few weeks for me because of sinus infections. I can't tell you how relieved I am as a mother, to no longer have to worry about my child having a full blown asthma attack and needing nebulizer treatments every few hours every time he has a cold. Dr. Ingram is a hero to our family.

This is a wonderful book.

If you suffer from sinus problems, such as myself, this is a great book to read. I have used one of the products, Oregacyn that Dr. Ingram recommends for sinusitis. It has helped greatly reduce the number of sinus infections that I have and has helped clear ones that start. I have allergies to pollen, trees, dust, etc. and this is the only supplement that I have ever taken that clears my sinus problems, so that I do not have to take antibiotics.

I highly recommend this book. Dr. Ingram covers all sorts of other respiratory ailments too.

Thankful for Dr. Cass Ingram

Having just read the review of July 8, 2005 relating to a press release from 2003, it boosts my trust of Dr. Ingram's very informative books. The American Medical Association would like to see Dr. Ingram and many others like him "go away". We're sort of at the crossroads right now where our liberty to buy natural products (such as Oil of Oregano and Oregacyn, etc.) could be taken away, and we would need a prescription to purchase such items.

Cancer is a multi-billion dollar business in this country. Could that be why the AMA is fighting so hard to get the natural food industry under their thumb? I wish I had known about Oil of Oregano, Oregacyn and Juice of Oregano 8 years ago when my sister learned she had lung cancer. She died 8 months later.

Oil of Oregano has pulled me through sinus problems and colds and a weakness that tends towards respiratory problems. His books with suggested solutions are priceless. Thanks to Dr. Ingram for the sacrifices he has had to make to get this valuable information to us. He is to be honored.

This is the answer

I have read many books and tried many things, but this is it! A great book and I follow it. It has saved me! I used to get so many respiratory illnesses, and now I do not. It did take a little bit for my immune system to get on board but it did. Thank you Cass Ingram!! I have purchased the whole line of p73 and the juice. It was and is the best money I have spent!! I have told anyone who will listen. My doctor even wrote it down himself and wants to give it a try. That says it all.
