Clinical definition of an organic brain disease
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2009-05-26
This edition contains the full 2003 Canadian clinical definition for this ICD-10 G93.3 brain disease developed by the biomedical researchers and clinicians who have seen and treated the organic symptoms of thousands of patients accurately diagnosed with this disease. Post exertional exhaustion unrelieved by rest (not tiredness) is but one symptom of many signs and symptoms required to diagnose this complex disease. Medically relevant signs (objective ways doctors use to test symptoms)are noted. A good book to help your physician understand this organic disease. Ask your local library to purchase it. Remember what all good clinicians know: A syndrome may contain a symptom, but a symptom is never a syndrome.

I'm always looking for natural solutions to medical problems, such as achy joints, sore muscles and the like. When I saw the book Natural Solutions for Pain-Free Living I knew I had to read it. The book is filled with lots of info on supplements to assist you in achieving pain free living. Dr. Talbott's diet plan is the most simplistic that I've ever seen and he includes a few recipes to help get you started. The supplements, diet and stretching exercises in the book are all part of his holistic plan to get you back on the road to pain free living. If you want strong bones and pain relief for achy muscles and joints, this book is definitely worth reading. I'm pretty sure that I will be putting it to good use.

This book is for people who either know someone who is terminally ill or who is terminally ill themselves. It is well written and uses humor to help people understand terminal illness. It puts emphasis on the fact that even though one may be terminally ill they are still very much alive and should go one living as such. It gives real life advice and provides you with possible (and humorous) ways to deal with people who don't understand the terminally ill situation. I found it enlightening and comforting.

It's Depressing, But True, And Knowledge Is Power

Review Date: 2004-12-30
I found this book by happenstance. Having lived as the well spouse of an MS patient for the last twelve years, I was searching for something for me. There are millions of books out there addressing the needs of the chronically ill, but very few readings tackle the challenges of the well people who deal with them.

The book was more of a validation for me than new information. That validation, however, must have been sorely needed, as I finished reading it in a couple of hours. Whatever stage you are at in dealing with chronic illness, there is a need to share information such as the stories in this book. Take hold, learn, and know that you are not alone.

The web search that led me to this book also led me to the National Well Spouse Foundation, which has a local chapter in my area. I will attend my first meeting next month. Unfortunately, the MS Society here does not have a support group for care givers.

Although I rated the book with five stars, I don't really love it. How can anyone love the intimacies of chronic illness? However, the writing is poignant, honest, and necessary -- not only for people facing these situations, but also for the people around them who don't.

My story to add: In addition to dealing with a husband with MS who slipped dramatically in the last year, I also have a teenage son with ADHD, and a daughter who's, well, normal? We have no family in this part of the country and I've had to learn to be very assertive and self-reliant. I could be one of the characters in this book. Maybe, some day, I will be.

A MUST Read for anyone that has had polio at one time!

Here is THE book that is a MUST read for the person faced with post polio syndrome, their families and certainly every doctor attempting to properly treat a PPS person. If you had polio as a child and don't think you have any problems now 40 yrs. later, you may be very surprised what you read & learn about yourself. Some lights may go on and connections relate to medical issues you have been dealing with but never dreamed it could be connected to having polio as a child. This is THE problem, doctors have little to no information about PPS and therefore misdiagnose or certainly don't recognize the true cause & correct treatment. Persons live for years with unanswered questions and truly suffer with no help in sight. First inform yourself if you had polio, then alert the doctors that have or are treating you. This is not just a note on your medical records that you had polio as a child, to be ignored as a past issue. If you need to find specialists, be your own advocate, because most everything the medical community says is misinformed about PPS. The general attitude is that polio was eradicated but there are still people getting polio from the vaccine. No one ever imagined that residual effects 40 yrs. later could put you in a wheelchair and live with chronic debilitating pain. You may be surprised to find out how PPS has affected your brain, & what comes with that now. Do this for yourself, read this book if you relate to any of this review.

I've used this book in my graduate level advanced practice nursing course "Primary Care of the High Risk Newborn." It combines what students need to know about the conditions they will see in practices that include children with chronic conditions. It is practicel yet contains enough theory to justify its use at the graduate level.

Psychological Treatment Of Chronic Illness: The Biopsychosocial Therapy Approach, deftly written by Len Sperry (Professor and Doctoral Program Coordinator at Florida Atlantic University and Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin) is an invaluable 221-page introduction into the behavioral treatment of patients with a condition of chronic illness. With over twenty years of experience treating patients with psychotherapy for a spectrum of health-related issues, Professor Sperry's offers expert, practical, knowledgeable, and informative information that is very strongly recommended reading for psycotheraputical practitioners, psychology and medical students, and patients diagnosed with a chronic illness.
