A good quality teen romance novelReview Date: 2008-11-02
Memorable bookReview Date: 2008-06-01
I've read several Sweet Dreams series book, but this is the only one whose title I remember. It's a tear-jerker, and even though at 9 years old I was too young to know about boyfriends and girlfriends and those types of relationships, I could still empathize with Mariah's pain.
I wish I had a copy of this book. It's very memorable.

Bittersweet & PoignantReview Date: 2006-12-13
*** SPOILER***
Because the hero dies. And no matter how many times I've read it knowing how the ending will turn out, I'm still mourning for Paul. Mariah and her family housesit a mansion in Palm Springs during the summer holidays. There she meets Paul who, unfortunately, has been diagnosed with cancer. The book reads like a teenager's journal who can write. Conklin really knows how to put the reader in the character's shoes with such descriptive language and little trivial details thrown here and there to make you feel like you're in the book. Mariah is a very likable character. Unlike many characters in the SD series, it makes no mention of her status in school and she comes across as very sensitive and insightful. I also like how Conklin doesn't describe Paul Strobe as your token hot hero and we are brought to attention to his skinny legs from the start. Mariah and Paul's story is unlike any of the SD series - very poignant, sensitive, bittersweet and reflective. Sadly, the sequel to this one, Falling In Love Again, could not compare.

just as well.
Highly recommended.

The Most Often Read Book On My ShelvesReview Date: 2008-03-21
Any writer will tell you that you don't write a best seller overnight, and this book will tell you that too. Unlike many other writing books available the pages don't contain advice at how to leave your 9 to 5 job and write the world's best novel. Instead the book is filled with useful, real advice for determined writer's to utilize and honestly get their pens on fire.
There are dozens of exercises to get you thinking and writing, with originality and flair. The book is well written and is a very easy book to devour in a short period of time. Except that you will more than likely find yourself reaching for it again and again to participate in the exercises and get you thinking on a more creative level.
A must have book for any would-be writer's bookshelf.

I plan to now read it again, and use it again, 3 years later.
The Power, Challenge, and Talent to Write, And Developing it, is important.
I like to write.
Always have, I guess, ever since I was in Elementary School ( early 70's ), then Junior High and High School ( mid/late 70's ), writng book reports, and then letters to the editor of the local paper.
For various reasons none of that ever translated into a career path.
I read somewhere that we are always afraid to start something that we want to make very good, true, and serious.
Rita Mae Brown once wrote: "Creativity comes from trust. Trust your instincts."
This book influenced the last 3 years of my blogging, on 2 blogs, and will help anyone who reads it.
This book will help you find the writer within, and find the time to write more as well.

As if being the daughter of the first female President wasn't enough, Meg has to deal with moving to a new house, going to a new school, finding new friends, and having to figure out how to deal with the whole Secret Service thing. With a few bumps along the road, Meg not only discovers more about herself, but she also learns things about her mom -- the President of the United States -- that not many people know about.
Ellen Emerson White writes an interesting story of a teenage girl living in the politics of D.C. What makes this book so compelling is that while readers may not be able to relate to the whole mother-running-for-President part, they can relate to a teenage girl dealing with a somewhat difficult mother, annoying brothers, and new surroundings.
With THE PRESIDENT'S DAUGHTER being the first in the series, the other books are sure to be just as pleasing and entertaining as the first.

A timeless classic...ahead of its time!Review Date: 2006-08-03
Although dealing with the issues surrounding Katharine Powers' campaigning and frequent travels, the Powers family is still refreshingly normal. Meg and her younger brothers regularly compete with dinnertime witticisms, and she and her best friend Beth spend embarrassingly long hours dreaming about the day that handsome and popular Rick will ask one of them out.
Firmly entrenched within '80s pop culture (references to things like Tab and Joan Jett are sprinkled throughout the book rather liberally), this story is simultaneously set in a time that has yet to come -- making it something of an anachronism, but a fun and quirky one.
Fabulous Young Adult Fiction...for GrownupsReview Date: 2005-05-13
I'm 36 now, and I've read one heckuva lot of books. But two of that stay with me are "The President's Daughter" and "White House Autumn." Like the very best in young adult fiction (Harry Potter, etc.), the themes are universal, the characterization is excellent, and the glimpse into another world is fascinating.

Exciting, Entertaining, Engaging...Best in Series So FarReview Date: 2009-01-01
I would rate this book a 4.75 (of 5), the deduction coming from a few technical issues I have with the author's choice of paragraph breaks and a few instances of lame dialogue. Listening to the story on a cd would answer for the first point quite nicely. The second point is a matter of personal preference, and some people may actually like the whole "what" scene that thoroughly annoyed me. It reminded me of Abbott and Costello's "Who's on First" skit. One time around, its funny, but more than once struck a painful chord within me.
Aside from that though, the story flowed rather nicely. In a few instances the sequence of events was far too convenient to be anything but a children's fantasy story, but it still fit nicely enough to engage the reader. Split second rescues, daring battles, and nicely executed battle tactics still make for a lovely story.
Characterization seemed better than the previous three books, but I think that's only because the previous three books could set it up. If you just picked up this book and read, you'd get a neat little story, but you wouldn't have the emotional connection to the characters. Some series are fine out of order (i.e. Star Wars: X-Wing series), but this is definitely a series to read in the intended order.
As for the title change from Oakleaf Bearers (Australia) to Battle for Skandia (U.S.), I'd have to say the US title strikes closer to the heartbeat of the story. The Australian title is better seen in scope of the whole series, and probably would have made better sense on book 3...but as mentioned elsewhere, book 3 and 4 could have been one story arc.
Last thing before I quit babbling here, this author is very good at cliff hangers. The stories are highly, highly predictable, but well timed tidbits keep one engaged anyway...

I loved this book sooo much!! The only thing I didn't like about it was that whole celebrity-clone thing. I mean, c'mon. How would they know which baby would be a celebrity someday? Are they just mass-producing future celebs in cloning labs or something? 'Hmm, this baby looks like she could be a supermodel someday. Let's clone her!!' hehe. Anyway, I loved the rest of the book. It was great!!!

Wonderful Story!Review Date: 2006-03-02
and I thought I was the only person that knew about this book......Review Date: 2007-03-23
The story is charming but it is the illustrations that make the story come alive. No credit is listed for an illustrator so perhaps the author did them herself? The drawings are mostly in black and white but a few are touched with color.
The story is that of Twig, a little girl who meets a tiny boy in her backyard. Through magic she shrinks down to size of the boy named Elf. Elf is actually a Brownie who has flown in on the back of a sparrow. Twig and Elf set up housekeeping in an upturned tomato can and furnish it with a table (a thimble and a bottle top,) a mirror (a shiny gum wrapper) and a broom (a feather). I have to say that not a lot happens in this book. No violence or bloodshed, and not even any enemies for Twig and Elf to fight. This is a gentle story and yet an enduring one.
Every household with children should have a copy of this book!

Only very minor complaint is a couple pages have gold writing on a dark blue background and it can be a little hard to read unless the lights are on.
But soon enough you will have the book memorized and it won't matter...a very cute and catchy nighttime story and certainly a keeper!
