We bought this for our young children (5-year old and 4-year old) as they were excited by the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

We bought this book along with Pirateology: The Pirate Hunter's Companion last year. We take the books off the shelf every couple months and read through them for bedtime. The books will stay in our collection for years to come.

This book helps introduces kids to a large amount of new vocabulary but, more importantly, covers so much ground that it acts as a fantastic springboard to further study history or science.

I bought this for my 7 year old nephew who had a newfound fashion for all things Pirate. Being a book (at a birthday party) it didn't get his full attention until later on when he asked his parents to sit and read it to him.
Now it's a year later and I found out the book was a tremendous success from the get-go. He brought it into school to share with the class and every kid there wanted his own copy so phone calls were made and the hunt was on. A few parents were able to get a copy. My nephew and his friends dressed up as pirates and went together to see the latest Pirates... movie. Later my nephew was huddled with his special book, relishing all the details it provided. This book is interactive by design which makes the reading all the more personal and imaginative.

This book gives a very good, comprehensive overview of the major disciplines in psychology. The text is long, but is well mixed with pictures, diagrams, and activities. The text is also very readable. This book is used as a college text for an Introduction to Psychology class. The material is presented in from a secular, non-biased perspective, highlighting major terms and discoveries and the most current research. If you want a good foundation of psychology, read this book. It might take you a while, and it might be a little dry at times, but overall it's an excellent text.

I used this text for my AP psych class in high school. I absolutely loved it. It is an excellent introductory survey of psychology and is written in such a way that it is easy to read, understand, and apply. I really liked that I was able to fully grasp the concepts with no prior knowledge in psychology and when I had to study for tests, I felt like I was studying life skills because this text does such an excellent job making the material relevant to the reader. This is my all time favorite textbook in any subject. Three years later, and I still remember a majority of the vocabulary and the importance of certain experiments. I highly recommend this book.

John Gottman produces the most insightful and inspiring books I have ever read. All his work is well worth the investment. Every parent should own a copy of this book and refer to it on a regular basis. There would be less violence, suicide, depression and school drop out if children where raised by parents who had more empathy and understanding of the important role that emotions play in early childhood. Buy this book and hold it close, it may change your life. Other books that you may find helpful are: Kids-Parents and Power Struggles, How To Talk So Kids Can Listen, Got the Baby Where's the Manual, Between Parent and Child, and Undconditional Parenting.

memoir written by a brilliant woman trained in child psychiatry, whose path was influenced by a need to heal the damages of her own childhood. That's How the Light Gets In: Memoir of a Psychiatrist by Susan Rako, M.D. owes its title to a song by Leonard Cohen: "There is a crack, a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in." Rako's book is remarkably candid, fascinating, and wonderfully well-written. It's a great read. The writing just flows.

This book was a purchase as a gift to my daughter who brought our first grandchild into the world not long ago. I know about John Gottman and his reputation as an excellent researcher on emotions and how they play out in body language and other ways people communicate with one another. I am also very familiar with the research on Emotional Intelligence developed by Perter Salovey at Yale and popularized by Daniel Goleman. This book integrates all of those sources of profoundly important social science into an amalgam that will surely help parents guide their children toward becoming well balanced and confident. This is not a bunch of pop psychology. It is impotant information from a man who knows whereof he speaks.

A Book for Every Parent

Review Date: 2008-07-14
John Gottman is a professor of psychology at the University of Washington, a Rabbi, author of the excellent book, "The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work," and also an entertaining speaker. My wife and I attended one of his talks on successful marriages. He's the Jerry Seinfeld of the clinical psychologist-Rabbi set.

Against that backdrop, it wasn't difficult for my wife to get me to read "Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child" after we had our second kid, although I wondered what misdeed on my part prompted the purchase.

As with Seven Principles, Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child is a tad heavy on discussions of research methodology, obviously intended to enhance the credibility of Gottman's conclusions. And some of Gottman's advice is a bit much for any but the most obsessive-compulsive. As an example, I don't think I'll be keeping an "emotion log" anytime soon in order to better understand my feelings "from moment to moment."

Such quirks aside, I recommend this book to every parent. It's short and easy to read, and most readers probably come away wishing their parents had read it. Gottman provides compelling insights and guidance for parents on how to help children identify, understand and work with all kinds of emotions ("emotion coaching"). Concepts are supported by examples of good and bad parental attitudes and/or parent-child interactions. These real-life examples colorfully reinforce Gottman's basic theories and demonstrate the advice in action.

Half way through the book, I found myself already trying to apply its principles in dealing with emotional outbreaks from our young children. They responded well. Gottman presents compelling evidence that parents can play an important role in the emotional well-being and happiness of their children and he argues persuasively that parents who succeed in doing so likely form stronger bonds with their children. That's a lot more value than one usually expects from a $13, 200-page paperback.

hi, i just finished reading this book today. It is one of the most touching books i've ever read in my entire life. It is sad, happy, and funny. It made me cry, smile, and laugh. It makes you realise how some people live. Some people, even though they are dying, still have a sense of humour, and they try to live life to the fullest.I would recommend this book for teens, and even adults. It really is truly touching!

The first time I read this book I was a sophomore in HS. I'm now a sophomore in college and still re-reading it! This was one of the most unforgettable teen books I've ever read. It made me laugh, cry, and taught me at a young age to not take the simple things in life for granted.

The story is about a girl, Leeanne, who gets caught shoplifting and is sentenced three hundred hours of community service. So of course she believes her life is over, and nothing could be worse. Until she meets Gabriel, who happens to reside in the hospice where Leeanne is placed for her community service. Gabriel has a weak heart and is dying, and at first Leeanne doesn't know how to react to him... especially since he isn't much older then she is. But throughout the story Gabriel begins to teach her how to really live, and what's really important.

The author did such a wonderful job of writing this story, that you're able to grow with the main character. Leeanne goes from being a spoiled brat, to an understanding loyal friend, who learns to love and to let go. A very bittersweet love story, that I will always remember!

The Adventure Continues...

Review Date: 2008-10-10
Uniting familiar characters with delightful new ones, "The Rise of the Wyrm Lord" chronicles the further adventures of Aidan Thomas as he readjusts to life in our world, the Mirror Realm, as well as detailing the journeys of headstrong Antoinette Reed. When the teenagers meet at school, they quickly discover a mutual love for King Eliam and his ways. Convinced that Antoinette is being called to the Realm, Aidan secures her promise to search for Robby's Glimpse and persuade him to join them while he tries to persuade him in their own world. Never dreaming of the trouble it would cause, Antoinette gives her word and soon her adventures in the Realm begin.

Like "The Door Within," "The Rise of the Wyrm Lord" works with a broad cast of twelve knights, each with different strengths. This book introduces my favorite character, the herbmaster and pyromaniac knight Sir Oswyn. Batson manages to keep his main characters--both the Glimpses from each other and Antoinette from Aidan--very distinct so that we do not lose track of characters for the number of them.

Teenagers who enjoy fantasy will love this second book in the Door Within trilogy. Woven within the fast-paced tale is a lesson of trust and obedience--and the consequences of ignoring wise counsel. The only problem with the book is that it is the middle of the sequence. The ending leaves one wanting more! And that is hardly a true problem.

A great sequel!

Wayne Thomas Batson's second novel in the Door Within Trilogy is better than the first book. While I had a lesser interest in the first one, this one grabbed me a little harder. I loved the Robin Hood-like society in the trees, and the message here continues strong. As I mentioned in my review of the previous book, if you like Brian Jacques, try these, Wayne Thomas Batson writes in a similar style.

Even though this is the second book of a series, I found it easy to understand. Like Narnia, it focuses on another world that is linked to our own. Instead of talking animals, The Realm is populated with Glimpses, each of whom mirrors someone in our own world. More than just the typical sword-and-helm fantasy, Rise of the Wyrm Lord weaves spiritual warfare and realistic characters into its enthralling tale.

Review Date: 2008-10-13
Mr. Batson takes another big risk in this sequel to The Door Within because he comes dangerously close to repeating the plot of the first novel, just with a girl hero instead of a boy. Fortunately, he avoids the error. Antoinette Reed is in many ways following in the footsteps of Aidan Thomas but precisely because her path to belief and her personality is so different from Aidan's, her experiences in the Realm are quite different. Where Aidan was struggling with disbelief and doubting of his own abilities, Antoinette is absolutely certain in her beliefs and absolutely confident in her own abilities.

The result makes for an interesting comparison and contrast as Antoinette faces situations and makes choices in a wholly different manner than Aidan did. In addition the threats she faces are much greater as Paragor's master plan begins to be revealed, events throughout moving with that relentless "Batson pace" that readers of Isle of Swords and Isle of Fire are well familiar with, and she also has to struggle with a favor requested by Aidan that may conflict with King Eliam's task for her. Another difference is that while it takes about the same number of pages for Antoinette to finally enter the Realm as it took Aidan, the wait is much more pleasant because instead of listening to Aidan raging and bemoaning his fate, we get to watch Aidan and Antoinette meet and become friends (and maybe something more?), and as is usually the case with the middle book in a trilogy, we don't really have an ending here, just a pause in the midst of ongoing disaster that must get a lot worse before it gets better.

Mr. Batson has created a fascinating world in the Realm, with similarities to but not quite like any other fantasy world I've ever seen, with Biblical references that are quite obvious to those who are looking for them but no stumbling block to those who are not. I bought this book shortly after I bought The Door Within as part of a promotional deal, but I never got around to reading them. Now I shall have to leap into the final book: The Final Storm.

Note: Other than a lower price the chief attraction of the paperback edition is the inclusion of the so-called "Lost Chapters", basically earlier draft versions of the first four chapters accompanied by author's commentary. The most interesting addition is "Farix's Tale", which provides something of an origin for this most interesting character.

This is destined to become a favorite story. It has the elements that make kids come back: happy endings, mystery & discovery, and love. The illustrations--done in oil--truly enhance the beauty of the book. This is a beautiful story that explains adoption without hitting the child over the head with the concept like many other books do. The narrative style allows the reader to embrace the idea, and not walk away saying "but that's not how I was adopted." Instead, you enjoy its uniqueness, sense the joy of Seaborne's arrival, and share in the excitement of the baby soon to arrive.

Emotionally moving and the illustrations are beautiful!

Based on a legend, this book is very touching. Children are thoroughly engaged in this book whether they are reading it on their own or having it read to them. It is superbly illustrated which enhances the book. Children can easily connect with the emotions in the text. I like the lessons it teaches children about love, caring, and family. I bought this book to use a s a read aloud in my classroom this year. It will be one I will return to each year. This book was recommended to me at a teaching conference and I am happy I made the purchase. Definitely try this one.

Whenever we read this book my kids always ask 'Mommy, why are you crying?' It's a beautiful, touching tale about family, love, and adoption. I bought it because my family was formed through adoption, like the little girl's in the book, but I think this book could be appreciated by anyone. The pictures are gorgeous, the themes of the sea, the chest, and love carried throughout, and the writing is excellent.

If you are an adoptive parent this is a must-have for your child's library, particularly if, like the family in the book, your child comes from "so far across the wide Atlantic."

My family is very fond of all of Julia Donaldson's books, but The Snail and the Whale is our very favorite. Axel Sheffler's illustrations are whimsical (My son has noticed that most of the insects he draws have noses)and beautiful. I am especially fond of its rhyming, making it a delight to read. Most of all, I love the messages it contains. One of which is that the world is vast and wonderful and we should get out and experience it. Also, it stresses the importance of helping one another, and being kind to our environment. A big nod goes out to The Snail and the Whale and its creators for giving us a book which is not only wonderful to look at and read, but has a valuable message. Thanks!

I have been a rabid Spider-Man fan, reader, and collector for the past 13 years. In that time, I've seen some of the best (1980's to 1993) and worst (Clone Saga) this hero has to offer. IN addition, I have collected every issue ever published. So, I'm very knowledgable about SPider-Man and his world. Still, this book is a delight to read. I didn't learn anything new, but it is well written, spectacularly illustrated with original comic art from some of Spidey's most legendary artists (Ditko, Romita Sr., Romita Jr., Frenz, Andru, Sal Buscema, Gil Kane, McFarlane, Bagley, Larsen). New fans will learn a lot from this book, but no matter how long you've been a fan of Spidey, this book is a treasure trove for you!!

Tom De Falco's comprehensive SPIDER-MAN guide is one of my favourite spidey books, covering everything from the comic's origins in the 60s to the recent movies. With some great insight into the characters in the world of comics and good layout, this guide tells you all you need to know about Peter Parker, Mary Jane and assotment of villians (Green Goblin, Doc Ock, Venom et all). DeFalco's extensive research has paid off, making this an essential addition to the already bookshelf-breaking collection of comic book guides. We bought this book for our five year old who loves Spiderman, but our whole family has enjoyed learning more about the villains and other characters in Spidey's world. It is fun to learn the origin of characters we are familiar with and some we had never heard of before. There are lots and lots of illustrations to keep the kids' attention, and the stories and bios are interesting enough for adults as well. The binding has fallen apart on our book- which may have survived better under normal wear and tear- but that is mostly because my son takes it to bed with him since he loves this book so much. Overall, a great book for kids and adults too.

I am a father of three (daughters 3 and 5 and a stepson who is 18) and am always looking for a few road maps along the way of fatherhood. I listen closely to old and new fathers because every now and then I learn something I can take back to my own home. This book is filled with insight, humor, and love. It's time to start the million father march. Buy this book; read it; and pass it on to another father. Let's face it: Fathers today are a lot different than the ones who raised us. Learn, laugh, love and continue to evolve because the world is becoming more and more challenging to raise children, and our kids need us to step up and be the father force in their lives.

We listened to this book on a long trip over Thanksgiving break. There were times we almost had to pull over because we were laughing so hard. Funny and touching, all at the same time!

I purchased this for my son, who is a new dad this month--but I couldn't resist reading it first :-) It is funny and heart touching--I loved chapter 8 and chapter 11 the best. Be prepared to laugh out loud, and be warmed with "ah" moments!

I really enjoyed reading this funny account of Steve's journey through his childhood and as he becomes of father and his journey. I laughed so hard at times that I had tears in my eyes. I would recommend this book to everyone. Thank you Steve for thinking of our troops also.
