This story is about David, a boy who has spent most of his life in concentration camps of Eastern Europe. When he is given a chance to escape, he does so with the expectation that he will be caught and returned to the camps at any moment. Eventually, he accepts that he has finally gained his freedom. His journey to this realization and beyond is one of enlightenment and revelation as he discovers the things about the world and its inhabitants that he never knew before. Most touching are his prayers to God for help to get through his the various trials that come his way. This book made me appreciate all that I have and I think it will have the same effect on anyone who reads it. Highly recommended.

An amazing story from the 'inner world' of a lost boy. When one wants to feel its heart touched? than read it!

The movie was wonderful and the book was even better, filling in details the movie had to leave out. I especially was touched by his growth in faith that was absent in the movie. A wonderful book for young people to develop character, but for adults as well. I was a little disappointed in the abrupt ending.

I Am David shows the horror of a country without freedom and what living in a country that holds no love for freedom for all men, shows what is done to men and children "they" find subversive. David is a special child given the strength to trek through difficulities and the unknown looking for what he knows in his heart to be something "lost" and so much better. Even though this is a book aimed for the primary younger crowd, this grandma couldn't put the book down until young David experienced the bad and good from those that journeyed with him in his search.

"I Am David" by Anne Holm depicts years of the tragic concentration camps. A young boy with no parents, in a concentration camp, has to escape or die trying. David meets an older women that is very kind to him. As David asks the older women about some books people are carrying around. The older women explains the book. David realizes the author of this book is his mother, who he thought was killed when they were separated to go to concentration camps. David and his mother are soon reunited at once. this is a good book, I think this it is a god page turner because this book will keep you guessing; what will happen next? Who is he going to meet next? I don't recommend this book to a 13 year old, I would recommend book to 11-12 year olds because it would be more thrilling ate that age. this book is a page turner but I thought it wasn't very exciting. If you are someone who loves happy endings then this would be a great book for you.

Owen clearly has a problem. Kevin Henkes doesn't shy away from letting us know, through the illustrations, that his problem is a buttinsky neighbor.

Unfortunately, Owen's parents listen to their neighbor and keep taking her dubious advice about his blanket. Of course, Owen really *can't* bring his blanket to school - but his parents finally stop thinking of Mrs. Tweezers' view of things and come up with a bright idea - they turn Fuzzy into handkerchiefs! Perfect solution and everybody's happy.

Great ending, and I do love Owen's passive resistance to his parent's obsession.

We give children's books as presents for new babies. This is a special book that will be reserved for our daughter at the event (if) of her first child.

Absolutely love all the Kevin Henkes books we have, This is especially cute because we have a boy who loves his blankie. I know a lot of little girls who love Lilly...but I would definitely recommend this and Chester's Way for the boys!

I read Owen. I would recommend this book. The reason I would recommend it is because it was funny and it made me crack me up. In the book Owen, Owen and Fuzzy were playing captain plunger. They looked silly. This helped me convince me that it was a grate book.

The book was first published in 1966 and then not again until 2005, due to popular demand. It is the story of an eccentric woman who lives with her dog in a tree. Circumstances demand that she come out of her hiding and help other people, despite her shyness. The illustrations are great and the story is great! My kids loved it.

The first time I read this book was to my daughter who is now 42 years old! It was part of a children's book club. To this day we can both recite portions of the book. I got a copy for my grandchildren and recommend it often. To me it is right up there with The Lorax! Especially good if a child is on the shy side.

I remember reading this book as a child. I loved the rhyming and the illustrations. There is even a good moral at the end. Wonderful book, great for children of all ages.

This was my favorite book as a child. When I would climb trees as a little girl I would pretend I was Miss Twiggley in her tree. What hours of delight and imagination this fine book inspired! I loved this book as a child and today I love it just as much. My children are hooked now, as well.

This was my absolute favorite book as a child. I have it memorized to this day and I am 43! This book has wonderful illustrations, and the rhythm of the text is so nice. The best thing about this story is the message. Being willing to step out of your comfort zone to help others in need is not only a blessing to them, but you will find yourself blessed too. This book is a MUST for every child. I am SO glad to see that it is back in print. I know what my niece is getting from me for Christmas this year!

Jamie is a normal 17-year-old girl. Well, not completely. Her dad is dead, and her mom is a big-time lawyer. The only real friend she has is Webb, her sort-of boyfriend. But, he's off backpacking in Europe, and Jamie has to follow her mother to Chicago, where a HUGE trial is going on.

Jamie does NOT want to be there. She would much rather be with Webb. In fact, she wants to be with him so much, she starts to daydream about him while riding a rented bicycle down the streets of busy Chicago. But this isn't any normal daydream. She feels like she is really at the beach, with Webb. She can smell the salty air, and feel Webb's hands as they braid her hair. HONK!! Jamie is jolted out of her daydream, right into a moving car! Could Jamie really space out that much? Why did her daydream feel so real? And why does everyone stare at her whenever she comes out of one? Is she really talking out loud to Webb? Shouldn't he be in Europe? What at first seems so innocent, just like a few daydreams, turns out to be more sinster then Jamie, or anyone, could ever imagine.

This has got to be one of the most spectacular books out there. The characters are handled so well, and the plot is nothing short of stupendous. You have to read this book at least twice to catch all the clues dropped in by the author. I recommend this book to everyone!

Excellent. It starts off slow, but as you progress it gets better and better. It surprised me at the end, that something that seemed so unimportant became such a big plot point. Very surprising ending. This book is recommended for teen readers.

Julie Reece Deaver's The Night I Disappeared was a great fictional book. She has a lot of imagination, which makes this book very interesting.

It tells about a girl, Jamie Tessman, who just left her hometown in California to go with her mother to Chicago on a business trip. Her mother is a successful and famous attorney. Everyone knows Jamie for that, but She is way different from her mother. Her father died when she was young, and ever since then she hasn't fit in anywhere... except when she is with her, sort-of boyfriend, Webb. They are so perfect together and she could be with him forever, until she finds out that he has never really been there for her at all. With the help of her new (and only) friend Morgan and Morgan's aunt she discovers a secret that has been keeping her separate from the rest of the world. She starts seeing things in Chicago, and she starts to think that she is slowly becoming crazy. When she finally gets the help she needs, she has to choose between Webb and reality.

At first when I started reading this book I didn't quite understand but then I learned that the whole point of the story was for Jamie to overcome her fears. I felt like I was with her through every step of the way, and every time she got just a little bit closer to reality. I thought this was a great book and really enjoyed reading it. I will never forget this book.

I love this kind of book, and I had to read this for school, so I was happy! This is one of the best books i have ever read. Its a heart warming story about a girl and and horrible night. I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!

The Night I Disappeared is mostly about a normal teenage girl named Jamie. But really Jamie isn't normal at all or had a normal life.
Jamie's mom is a lawyer that is non stop. Her mom gets all the publicity a famous person does just on a court case. Well Jamie's mother has to go live in Chicago to do a famous murder trail. When stress is put on Jamie because she misses her friends and boyfriend everything gets out of control.
Jamie starts to have dreams or `clips' in her mind about her boyfriend Web. Soon the dreams become a hassle for her. Her mom very concerned about her healthy, she sends her to a physiatrist. Jamie went ahead and agreed so it wouldn't put even more stress on her because of the case. When Jamie soon finds out things her life, her family is hit like a bolt of light hitting the earth. Jamie soon finds out that her life isn't what she thought it was.
I really liked this book because it has a twist in it. It leaves you stunned because people's lives can be like that. It leaves you sitting on the edge of your seat. You can also make so many comparisons and you can understand what Jamie has to go through.
My dislikes are how the book goes back and forth from her dreams and her real life because it can confuse you. Other than that I wouldn't say anything else bad about it.
I would recommend this book to any person. A person who really loves mystery or Rebecca Davis books would also enjoy this

The art style is ugly and (usually) unrealistic, but at least it's unique. This is a very original manga; the author obviously has a great gift for storytelling. It's worth the buy.

Monkey D. Luffy wants to be King of the Pirates. He has always had this dream, from when he was a kid, and now he is off on a small boat armed with a large heart and a rubber body. Yes, a rubber boy. You see, he ate the fruit of the gum-gum tree which turned him into a boy of rubber. And now he must go forth, fighting pirates and the law, to find the One Piece, the greatest treasure in the world. The problem is nobody knows where it it and he has no training in navigation.

Hehe... this is one of the most awsome mangas ever. Its about a little boy who wants to become a pirate. His hero is shanks and fights several enmey who are powerful... buggy, captain kuro, arlong, krieg, crocodile, mr 1-5, lucci, and enel...( i may have forgot some.) Anyways, he finds new abilities and funny ways to fight enemy pirates... BUY IT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!

One piece is one of the most popular Shonen Jump mangas, and Eiichiro Oda is still managing to make new volumes of the series. After re-reading this volume, I have came to the conclusion that this is a series that I want to be a fan of. Everything was well plotted. Luffy reminds me a little bit of the young Goku of Dragon Ball. There is quite a bit of humor, but it didn't really make me laugh. It did, however, make the scenes better.

Luffy wants to be the king of pirates, and he has to get the treasure of One Piece. But first, he must get a crew. This is where Zoro comes in. A bounty hunter arrested for saving a little girl from Captain Morgan of the Navy's son's dogs. After Zoro joins the crew, Zoro saves a shipwrecked crew of Captain Buggy, who is also a rubber man. Did I mention that Luffy ate the devil's fruit and now he's like rubber? No? Whatever.

This is an excellent volume. It's one of the best Shonen Manga up to date, but probably not the best. The scenes are better than those dry, desert lands like Trigun. There is humor, and it moves pretty fast paced except when Luffy tries to rescue Zoro and does.

Eiichiro Oda, One Piece: Romance Dawn (ViZ, 1997)

Now, come on, what can be cooler than pirates? Oda kicks off his popular manga series in a way that kind of surprises me: we get the backstory of Monkey D. Luffy, King of the Pirates, before we actually get to the plot. (Well, okay, there's a page or two that sets up the hidden trasure for which the series is named.) A truly pleasant surprise, that-- a manga that actually goes in chronological order! Romance Dawn is the story of how Luffy became a pirate in the first place, his amusing beginnings with his first boat, and the recruiting of his first partner (Zoro). If you've been watching One Piece on Cartoon Network, it's definitely worth digging into the manga-- especially if you wandered in halfway through, like I did. *** ½

After years of reading "Read Aloud Bible Stories: Vol. 3" to my girls, I finally had to look up the others. Volume 3 has such fundamental stories (the Creation, the Flood, Daniel & the Lions, the birth of Jesus) that I wondered what could possibly be in Volumes 1 and 2! I just may have to get them and find out.

Originally I picked up this book for basic Bible stories I could read quickly before bed because there are not many words on each page (parents who read the same book night after night after night know exactly what I'm talking about!), but I thought the illustrations were kind of sloppy. Over time I came to appreciate the simple paintings for how they capture the essence of each scene with such casual ease. Children love them, so what do I know? Interestingly, a story in this volume about manna, "God Gives His People Bread to Eat," has been the perennial favorite.

I purchased one book and my boys (three at the time) loved it. I purchased another in the series and then finally the last two. We've got a lot of bible story books my kids had no or little interest in. These are so engaging--the writing, the pictures, the selection of stories. These stories inspire them to pretend and re-tell the stories themselves. They are also easy to use as a lesson--the story, acting it out, doing a craft. I only wish there were more in the series!

I bought the first two books of the series over a dozen years ago when my youngest son was little. I was a preschool teacher of four year olds for many years and used these stories. I have also have used them with two-year-olds in Sunday School and the children like them.They get to the essence of the story with simple words and explanations. I love the simple and clear artwork with watercolor drawings. I think the simple story and artwork allows the feeling of the story to come through. I had looked for these books in stores over the years with no luck. Now with a grandson, I was delighted to find them to complete my collection. I can't wait to read the stories to him.

We used this book for our children from the time they were born until they were three years old. They loved it! The illustrations are fantastic and beautiful. Any time I give a baby gift I always include this book. Highly recommended!

When my son was in preschool, this was hands down one of his favorite books, along with Vol. 1. The stories are simply written yet remain true to the spirit of the Word. We highly recommend these books!

Helen Lester's books all combine sweet stories with terrific humor that both children and adults can enjoy. The stories are just the right length and have a nice hidden message as well--you may be different but that can be a plus! The whole Tacky series is wonderful.

I love this series. Besides being silly and fun to read, they also point out that it is ok to be different. This is a great message for kids, especially with the terrible shootings that have plagued our country. A message of acceptance is needed for all. Of course, my class just loves Tacky. He is a character everyone must get to know.

Very cute story, very engaging with hilarious illustrations. This is a great book - we travel alot so I tend to purchase a lot of paperback picture books (portable!) and this is one of our favorites.

It's been many, many years since I read this book, the last time being in my childhood. It's been a while, but I still remember Tacky with fondness. In fact, I was just thinking about him earlier today. I loved this book sooo much when I was a child, and highly recommend it for both kids and parents alike.

My son from an early age marched to a beat of a different drummer. We discovered this book when he was 5, and it was a great thing in his life. I was recently asked to name the most influential non-religious book in our lives and believe it or not this was it. Tacky helped our son believed that there was a place in the world for both the straight-laced run-of-the-mill kids and the more creative types. He is leaving to college today, his third year , and I just had to write this review in thanks. Our son has a lot of self-esteem and this book helped him find it. If you have a quirky kid, this book is a must. If you have a 'normal' kid, but they have a quirky friend this is a good book too, because it doesn't put down either sets of people, or penguins as the case may be. We of course have the whole book memorized and can make any of us smile by starting any of the phases in the book. If we save one of the children's books in our library, Tacky would be by FAR it.

I could not put this book down. This is a story of a young woman's journey though foster care and adoption. Though there are plenty of bad things that happened, this is ultimately the story of resiliency and hope.
It depicts the tragedy that can happen when there is no accountability in the foster care system. It is also a tribute to the court appointed volunteers who advocate for the best interest of children within "the system". Even for those (like me) who have worked for years with the Child Welfare system, there is a lot to glean from this sensitive and comprehensive view of foster care and adoption.

I have purchased over a dozen copies of this book. I literally give them away to people. Ashley Rhodes-Courter is a success story. Unfortunately not all kids in foster care get to have a success story. Ashley aptly shows the reality of living in foster care in an engaging and spellbinding way. I have adopted 3 children out of foster care, 2 of them older child special needs adoptions with RAD. It is a tough life plan, but so necessary and more importantly, fulfilling. Many people will ask us about our adopted children's stories but we have to always answer, "that is confidential." Ashley provides us with a book that we can give people and say this is what it is like to be an older child waiting in the system for a forever family - and watching "forever" families disrupt. Older child adoptions are NOT easy, but they are worth it. Ashley travels and lectures so keep your eyes open (or check her web-site) and take the opportunity to meet her in person and get your book signed. Don't buy just one copy of this book, buy two and give one to a friend.

I real a lot of fiction, and this book was a departure from my usual literary fare. I was not disappointed. I listened to the book on CD during a long drive and was hooked. As a CASA, I understand how the system works, and how often children are under-served. On the flip side, I have encountered wonderful foster/adoptive families who have worked tirelessly to improve the lives of children. This book is refreshingly honest. Ashley Rhodes-Courter is articulate, passionate, and courageous. I recommend this read to everyone.

When I read the last few chapters of this book I couldn't stop crying. What a wonderfully inspiring true story! Sometimes, dreams do end up coming true, even for foster children.

The first part of the book asks some important questions: what makes someone fit to be a mother - or a substitute mother? Ashley was nurtured and loved by a dysfunctional grandfather and his enabling girlfriend, and actually, that was where she should have stayed. These two people loved her dearly but weren't exactly model citizens; grandpa drank a little bit too much, and did engage in some questionable behavior when he drove drunk with his toddler grandson in the car.

It would have cost taxpayers and society far less if the family had been kept together. I am not an advocate of family reunification programs in general, but in this family's case, the outcome would have most likely been positive. Ashley's mother was incapable of raising her children, but her relatives were far more able, and completely willing to accept the responsibility. And a drunk grandpa would have been paradise compared to the hell that Ashley and her brother Luke endured over the next decade of their lives. They were taken away from their grandfather and placed with abusive foster parents, including one foster mother who punished her wards by making them drink hot sauce.

When Ashley dared to confide in someone about the abuse, she was tagged as a liar and a manipulator. She learned to keep quiet and to silently endure whatever was done to her by her foster parents. Her only savior was her court-appointed CASA advocate, also called a guardian-ad-litem, an unpaid volunteer who represents the best interests of children in foster care. However, there aren't enough advocates to meet the needs of every child, and it was several years before Ashley was assigned a CASA volunteer.

Some parts of Ashley's story may prove difficult to read if you've walked in her shoes and you have unresolved personal issues, abandonment, abuse, etc. Don't expect to get much sleep the night you finish reading this book.

A series of improbable coincidences would lead Ashley out of foster care and orphanages. What happened to her was nothing short of a miracle. She won the foster care child lottery, and was given a second chance at a new life. I highly recommend this book.

Outstanding way to appreciate loved ones while they are with us and what happens when they are no longer with us. Wonderful reading! One of my children's favorites.

I loved the book, I just didn't like the artwork. Very busy and messy. My son loves loves balloons but he could barely make them out on the busy pages. I'd definitely get another artist or at least make the artwork cleaner.

She is excited about reading this book after reading silly moods, but is happy to wait so we can read together on next visit.

My favorite teacher at my son's daycare was leaving - going to a new job. I found this book to be a perfect gift for her. I thought it could also represent the balloons as a metaphor for someone going away. Excellent story with beautiful illustrations.

As an elementary school counselor I used this book to help students cope with grief and loss.

In my english class we had to read a mystery book and make a presentation. I saw that this book was one of the choices that we could choose to read. I had read some of Joans books before and I really liked her writing style. This book was very interesting to read and I could hardly put down the book because of it's suspenseful plot and interesting topics. Joan used very good despriptions and made you feel like you were there with the main character Sarah darnell. I highly reconmend this book as one of the first Joan Lowery nixon books that you would read if you haven't started reading her books and got hooked with her unique writing style.The story gives off a feel of many different feelings and moods that would come natural with the situations that are explained in the writing.This is one of those books that you could be wanting to read later on in the future. I could read this book over and over and not get bored. I hope you decide to read this book if you haven't already and if you have you could probably read it again.

Whispers From the dead is an excellent book. If you like mysteries I'm sure you would like it. Its about a girl named Sara who had a near death expearence. After that she has been feeling that ghosts were watching her. Then her family moves into a new house when she goes into the house she gets an earie feeling. She keeps on seeing werid visions. And hearing a spanish girls cry for help. Can she help the girl? Can she figure out the mystery? Find out for your self by reading the book.

This book is about a girl named Sarah. Her family decides to move to this huge house that was on a beautiful neighbor hood. What Sarah's family didn't know was that someone was murdered in the house before they moved. Sarah found this out first hand when she starts hearing voices and seeing things such as puddles of blood on the floor. When she lived in her old town she almost drowned when she went swimming, Ever since she has been linked to another world. She feels as if a dark shadow was following her and when she moved into the house the Spanish voices whispering to her for help. Sarah finds out that the voice she was hearing in the house was from the girl who was murdered. She from there tries to find out what really happened in the murder.

The things I liked about this book were how the detail of the book helped you see and feel and hear what Sarah did. I liked this because it really gets you into the story and you feel as if it were you, not Sarah. One thing I didn't like about the book was how it was kind of boring. Usually when the beginning is boring the person never wants to read on to find out what happens, but I advice everyone to read on because it is a really good book!

People who would like this book would be someone who likes a little mystery or somewhat scary books, even maybe suspense or thriller novels.
