It's a great story, and fun to read for even the older crowd. It takes history and toys with it a great deal, they even tap into Roman mythology. The outside of the hard cover books are also great craftsmanship. Beautiful pages and great cover art, same quality as the first in the series The Alchemist.

This series has offically taken over my top spot as my favorite series. Previously the Harry Potter series and the Foundation Series by Issac Asimov were at the top. For that matter either, the Magician and the Alchemist books stand alone as my favorite two individual books.

Just outstanding.

My 12 year old granddaughter loved this book (and the 1st book in this series). It arrived in 2 days with Amazon Prime! She couldn't wait for it to arrive. When it did, she sat down and read it in one day! She is disappointed that the sequel to The Magician isn't due out until the spring of 2009.

Even better then the Alchemyst - can't wait for #3!!

Interestingly, I saw a review titled "the real heir to Harry Potter" - and I couldn't agree more. Ironically, I picked up the first in this series The Alchemyst: The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel at the Borders release party for Deathly Hallows. I liked it - thought it was ok. I was going to wait until the paperback version of this one - but was convinced by some other reader friends to get it now. I am so glad I listened to them. This was even better then the first - although, in my opinion, it would probably be hard to follow without having read the first. "Do-able" but better if you read them in order.

It introduces us to some great historical characters - in a totally new light - and brings in so many different aspects of so many different mythologies from around the world. But in a fun way. There's magic all over the place (some might say "duh" because of the title) and the story moves along well. There are visits to some great landmarks too. The characters are becoming more developed and complex. And there's plenty to discuss on message boards about what might come next (there are 4 more to come).

The author is well versed in mythology - which can be seen in the over 100 books he has written. This series does a wonderful job of tying all sorts of important historical and mythological events and characters and places into one big magical bow. Totally the next Harry Potter... or at least it should be! The Flamel Fansite has more helpful info on the series and the next installment - which I can't wait to read!!

My parents bought this book, "The Many Adventures of Pengey Penguin", for me when the author came to visit. At first, I thought it would be too young for me, but I said I would read it to my younger brother and sister. I ended up really enjoying this book. I'm 12 years old this year, and I like Penguins and travel. I think that's why I liked the book. The main character, Pengey, travels from Antarctica to New York and makes stops at two other countries, so it was fun to find the places on the map and show my younger brother and sister where he went. I've been to New York too. I also like his two best friends and their friendship and how they get into trouble and have to get out again. It was also exciting.

My little bother and I love this story about Pengey Penguin. He is a very funny little guy and the only penguin we have read about who can sing or speak human words. We also really like his friends the parrott, named Lionel, and puffin, named Rufus. We both have different parts of the story that we like the best. My brother likes it when Pengey ends up in the aquarium in Rio and I like it when Pengey and his friends escape from the bad scientist. The three friends also meet some other funny animals before the end of the story.

The author came to our school to do a visit and reading for us. Mr. Burns was very informative and we all really liked hearing him read. Then we were all able to buy a book if we wanted too. I think this is a great book and a great adventure to read for children. My friends and I think Pengey is really cute and some of his friends are very funny. Our teacher said she likes the book because it is funny and also she could use the book to teach us about the world and different animals and the ocean. We all love Pengey!

"The Many Adventures of Pengey Penguin" is about a penguin names Pengey who goes on adventures to find his mother and father who disappeared. His mother disappeared when it was the mom's turn to go fish hunting; the other penguin moms came back but Pengey's mom did not. Then, the dad had to go get food and he didn't return. Pengey went out to find them.

On the way to find his parents, he ran into a human named Wendy. Pengey and Wendy became friends. Wendy had to leave for Rio de Janeiro and left Pengey. Pengey wanted to go with her so he hid in the airplane's wheel compartment.

"The Many Adventures of Pengey Penguin" by John Burns is good for everyone who likes adventures. I love adventure stories and this was a great one!

This book was very helpful in dealing with a narcissistic in-law family. I suppose I would have gotten more out of the book if it had been my family of origin. Lots of good information, at times a bit too technical for this lay-person, but overall an interesting and helpful read.

I also recommend "The Wizard of Oz and Other Narcissistics" for those dealing with a malignant narcissistic in the family.

My mother is still narcissistic in virtually every relationship she has. I now recognize what it is about our relationship that leaves me empty. I no longer provide her narcissistic supply and I have established some clear boundaries with her. I can't change my childhood but I am aware of how it can affect me in my daily interactions and, armed with that knowledge, I have been able to be a better mother to my son.
I would definitely recommend the book to anyone who has to deal with a narcissistic family member; it doesn't necessarily have to be your parents. It could be a sibling, too.

This book was quite an eye opener for my husband and I. We actually read it together and was able to identify many of the issues addressed. We feel armed with the knowledge of what we are dealing with (as knowing is 1/2 the battle), but we are still uncertain as to how exactly to deal with the narcissitic parent/family system in certain situations. We plan to continue reading about this topic, discussing how best to be in control of our own actions/feelings, and moving foward past the narcissitic upbringing. This book was definitely the place to start.

My daughter has times when she is just fine and times when she worries about all sorts of things. I wasn't sure if I actually needed this book but I bought it because I thought it might help when she went through one of her periods of worry....and I am so glad that I did. A house in our neighborhood caught on fire and it stirred up some pretty intense worry. I am so glad that I had this book to read to her. She was smiling and laughing soon after we started it and it gave her (and me) some great and easy tactics to deal with the worries.

This book is a perfect vehicle to teach children what their feelings are and how to identify them. It helps take the chaos out of their anxiety and also gives parents the words they need to explain what is happening.I have found that children struggling with anxiety and anger benefit from a multimodal approach. It is imperative to also arm them with relaxation techniques and self talk techniques. I recommend Angry Octopus(a relaxation story) and A Volcano in my Tummy(great lessons)along with What to do When You Worry Too Much. Watching your child's worries dwindle and their confidence grow is life changing.Angry Octopus: An Anger Management Story, introducing active progressive muscular relaxation and deep breathing (Indigo Ocean Dreams)A Volcano in My Tummy: Helping Children to Handle Anger

My favorite book as a child

Review Date: 2009-01-02
This was my favorite book as a child way back in the 60s! I was so pleased to find it as a used book last summer and read it to my Summer School class and now plan to use it in my work as a reading tutor.

As a child, I loved how the girls were resourceful and found ways to keep up their spirits. And the idea of living on a tropical island really captured my imagination (I drew many palm trees over the years! And perhaps that is part of why I live in Hawaii today).

And, as a pre-teen, I loved babies and looked forward to babysitting. Perhaps in some way, books such as this, pulling me toward adventure, and my experiences babysitting, led me to the leap of being an "au pair" in Italy, caring for 4 boys. I do remember thinking of "Baby Island" as I made a basket from twigs and twine while the family and I were in the Italian Alps.

As an adult, however, you have to suspend disbelief about two girls and babies in a liferaft that make it fairly easily to an island and survive with few problems. (When I thought of the book, as I grew older, I realized how tragic it would be for the parents of the babies!)

Overall, I feel it gives a positive message for girls about being competent, creative and compassionate.

Very good!

This book is so good. It is where 12 year-old Mary, and her 10-year old sister, Jean are on a ship, and one day the ship starts to sink, and as quick as they can, the take all the babies that they had babysat while on the ship, and get into a lifeboat, but then, right before the boat sinks, their lifeboat gets accidentally thrown into the water, it is just them and 4 babies, all alone in a lifeboat with only a few odds and ends, like a tarp, jerky, canned milk, a jug of water, and some sfety pins. After 5 days of sailing in their little lifeboat, theese corageous little girls land on an island. They make shelter and look all over for food. There are ALOT more twists in the book............ but I don't want to spoil the surprises for you. you wil just have to buy it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I did a book report on this book as a kid and really enjoyed the story. This will delight young babysitters and little girls with younger siblings! I have a sis five years younger and could relate to the hardships of these two girls who get stranded on an island with four babies. This book has a good balance of good and bad events and a great ending. The characters seem very realistic but parts of the plot are a little far-fetched and seem fictional. Either way, it's a very fun story with nothing too gross or scary. It also has a fair amount of cute, clean humor. I would say this is a good story for younger readers and those who like a lighthearted story.

Great fun!

As a young girl, I read this book over and over. Loved it! Magical. Shipwrecked on an Island with babies in their care - the girls in this story have an adventure. I was so jealous! I loved babies, still do! This book was dreamy fun.

The author, Carol R. Brink, also wrote "The Pink Motel," my other fav in the 5th grade. Have them both, and will treasure them forever. All my daughters read this, and liked it, as every little girl would.

Delightful! Buy it! thanks, Gramma Sally

A Fun Book that Kids Love!

Review Date: 2008-12-27
I have seen 16-month-old or 4-year old kids ask for candies or chocolate before, but I have not seen them asking for a book until I got "Brain Quest Workbook: Pre-K."

A few weeks ago, I have read some pages of "Brain Quest Workbook: Pre-K" to 4-year-old Betsy and her twin sister Irene and their little 16-month-old sister, Sara once. Ever since that, they always want me to read the book to them, or do an activity in the book. To them, this book is like a game and filled with fun. Sometimes I even caught them taking this book from the bookshelf and read it themselves.

This book is so attractive to kids because it gives kids what they like: bright color illustrations, interesting animals, stickers, maze, line drawings for coloring. The only problem I have is that I only have one copy of this book, and Betsy always fights with her twin sister Irene for the chance to color a certain line drawing, or do a certain activity. I need to have another copy to make them both happy.

"Brain Quest Workbook: Pre-K" provide a lot of education materials in a fun manner, including ABCs, 123s, Phonics, Vocabulary, Shapes and Colors, Sorting and Matching, My World, Science, Fun and Games, and Brain Quest Extra (Mini-Deck Cards, Brainiac Award Certificate, Alphabet Stickers, Animal Stickers, and Alphabet Fold-Out Table, etc).

"Brain Quest Workbook: Pre-K" has 320 pages. It is written by Liane Onish, with Jane Ching Fung, the 2002 Winner of the Milken Foundation Educator Award as Consulting Editor. It is a fun book that kids love!

This bright, colorful workbook has quickly become a favorite with my preschooler. The projects are well thought out and the instructions are clear. There are separate sections for learning about letters, numbers, colors, shapes, relations, other concepts and he likes to skip around, working on whatever strikes his fancy. At over 300 pages, it will keep him busy for quite a while.

My only complaint is that the full-color illustrations mean that this workbook can't double as a coloring book, as many can. The "replay value" is thus rather limited.

We first started using Brain Quest workbooks with my daughter to enhance her classroom education. Lately my son has been asking to go to school and has shown an interest in my daughters homework. Enter Brain Quest. Now he sits at the kitchen table with our daughter doing his "homework" along side her. The lesson plan is a plan that is not too advanced for his little brain. We LOVE Brain Quest! I highly recommend these books!

I would highly recommend this workbook to any parent who wants to get a head start with their toddler before entering formal pre-k or kindergarden as well as recommend this book to homeschooling families. The pre-k material out there can be very expensive and for a little over $10 this book takes the cake.

I have a 2.5 year old who I plan to homeschool and although some of the material this a little difficult for him now, there is still so much that is just perfect for his age. He loves it and thinks its really fun, especially when he sees how proud of him I am.

There are 303 pages of actual material divided into 9 sections (excluding the "extras" at the end). ABC's, 123's, Phonics, Vocabulary, Shapes/Colors, Sorting/Matching, My World, Science, Fun & Games. I can't fully explain to you how beautiful every page is with the large letters & beautiful graphics. The book is very creative and also allows for your child to be creative with many sections for them to draw or write things about themselves.

My only complaint is that it's not spiral bound. Someone suggested binding the book for $5 at your local copy shop and I would agree. I don't want to tear all the pages out because it would be great to review it through-out the year. However, this does provide the option for you to tear out and photo-copy for multiple children or uses.

I like how the book incorporates all three learning styles in almost every activity (auditory, visual & tactile kinesthetic). The parent reads, the child looks and points/draws. This is a book, unless your child reads, that you will have to sit down with and work through. Also every activity seems to have more than one subject being taught. For example, you circle the letter A with a purple color. Your child has to listen, follow instructions, draw a circle, find the letter A and the color purple. I like the multi-tasking learning---really helps to teach a lot in a short time especially with short attention spans.

Overall, this is one amazing workbook of material for an incredible price. A great resource for every family with small children & would make a great gift.

This book is very interesting and intuitive. The illustrations are nice and clear making it attractive for children. The books starts with letters and numbers helping the kids recognize them. What I liked about the letters and numbers sections is the part where the kids get to trace the dotted letters. The letters to be traced are big and clear and that makes the kid job a lot easier.
The book continues with Phonics, Vocabulary, Shapes and Colors, Sorting and matching, My world, Science and Fun & Games. All these sections are full of examples matching letters and words to familiar items they see in their day to day activities.
The kids will love the Fun and games section when they will be able to color the illustrations and find various items through labyrinths.
Each section is colored differently, making it easier to pick it up where you left it.
I think the book is a nice addition to any parent library. I will definitely try the other levels of the Brain Quest Workbooks.

I really enjoy writing in this pregnancy journal. The format keeps me on task every month and the questions help me to document all the occurences in the pregnancy-doctor's appointments, changes in me and baby, it's very organized. This journal is definetely written for the mother-not written to the baby per se, but I know it's something I will love sharing with my daughter when she is pregnant! It's got lots of details and questions that my son might not love reading about though, but I love looking back at his (I've used this with both pregnancies) because it helps me to remember all the details of being pregnant with him. If we have a third child there is no doubt I'd want another one of these journals!

I gave this to my best friend, who is pregnant with her first baby. I had been looking at other journals and this one looked more on the fun and cute side opposed to all serious. When I got it it was so nice, bright colors and the pages were high quality. The book has alot of fun questions in it and even some for the dad to be! Also has a format that would help someone still to it, sometimes journals can be hard to continue. Where there are questions and then space for the answers...and not questions that would involve pages and pages of answerws. Some of the questions may seem silly to fill in now, maybe a bit on the corny side, but these answers to these questions are going to be exactly what you are going to reread and remember for years to come!

The further I dive into this series, the more I like it. Each book has a better story and the characters develop more depth as well.

For a quick, easy and fun read I would recommend this entire series.

Books 7 and 2 of this seires will help you understand this one better. Qui-Gon and Obi Wan go to Xanato's home planet of Telos to find him and bring him to justice. There they will try to become master and apprintice once again if Xanatos dosen't [destroy] them first. This is a page turner I read it in one day it was so good. The ending is suprising and makes you wonder for a second. Reading all the series leading up to this book will make this a must have for star wars fans. To me there are two parts two this series books 1-8 which is the begining of the master apprintice relationship part two books 9-18 watches the relationship grow overtime and introduce new allies and enemys. out of part one this is the best book. To me it is the 3rd best book in the series the only books that top it are books 15,and 16. The only flaw with this book is that it was predictable except in chapter 2 and the second to last chapter. The cover of the book front and back give away some of the best parts. Still Jude Watson managed to make a great star wars book.

I've been reading the Jedi Apprentice books to my son (Alex) off and on for the last three years, and he's loved them - and so have I. I still read them to him even though he's getting old enough to read them himself, just so I can have an excuse to read young adult books (yes they are that good).

We've followed the early adventures of Qui-Gon Jinn and young Obi-Wan Kenobi and have been enthralled with the ongoing Xanatos conflict (Xanatos is Qui-Gon's former apprentice introduced to us in the second book of the series "Star Wars Jedi Apprentice: The Dark Rival") . Over the last few book there has been a large story arc concerning Obi-Wan leaving the Jedi order that reaches its conclusion here, and we were happy to see its well thought out end (following a story that long has been a challenging task for my son). However about halfway through this well written epic adventure (as good as any published for adults), I realized that story elements that were set in motion during the very first books (the equally great "Star Wars Jedi Apprentice: The Rising Force" and the aforementioned "Dark Rival") were now coming to a head.

At first I was concerned that my son wouldn't remember all that had come before (in the last 8 books) but just as with Bruck's story in the last book ("Star Wars Jedi Apprentice: The Captive Temple") it came back to him and that speaks volumes about the quality of Jude Watson's writing - that in an age were so much is disposable and easily forgotten, these books have left a lasting impression with my boy.

We look forward to breaking the spine of the next book in the series, to see what adventures await Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, and if they are anything like what has come before - I know we're in for a treat.

This is one of my favorite books. I always like books where good guys go bad. Xanatos was Qui-Gon Jinns former padawan. He already went to the dark side. When Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan Kenobi went on a mission to Telos Xanatos' home planet. They ran into a surprise. Xanatos was waiting for them. They fell into many of Xanatos' traps yet in the end of the book the jedi manages to put Xanatos in a similar trap. This is one of the best books yet and I love it. It shows ones evil fall and anothers redemption as a jedi. Qui-gon is finally letting go of Xanatos and accepting Obi-Wan, This sets a background for the entire saga of Star Wars. I would just like to say that I have read all of the Star Wars kids books and I am the biggest fan. I know what I'm talking about. May the force be with all who read this book.

Very clever book for children! It uses photographs of real dogs to illustrate contrasts (big dog/little dog, etc). There are moving parts on each pg that seem sturdy enough to handle lots of use. My 10 month old niece already knows which dogs move, have fuzzy ears to touch or a soft belly to pet. Really a beautiful book and makes a great gift for children through K age.

This is my son's favorite book. I actually bought this for him before he was born as we have three dogs and the book was appealing to me. He is now 14 months old and he pulls this from his book collection and brings it over to me, says "Da-doo!", sits in my lap and starts turning the pages himself. His favorites parts to touch are the English Sheepdog and the Basset with the sticky tongue.

This also stands the durability test! We had him walking around naked the other day to air out a diaper rash and he accidentally peed on this book! I was upset as I thought it got ruined. There is not one single mark or stain on this book even after I wiped it down with antibactieral wipes!

I can't wait for the CAT book to come out!

My son got this book for Christmas last year and loves it! The different dogs in the book are great, and he even can identify the different neighborhood dogs in the book. He loves to make the dogs move and explain each picture to us. One downfall is that he has ripped the leg off one dog, and we've had to glue it on several times. So watch those little hands!

Hands on, funny and adorable!

I saw this book before I was even pregnant and I knew I had to buy it. When my daughter was born, my mom bought it for her, and now that she's almost a year old, my daughter LOVES the book. We have 2 dogs of our own, so naturally she's already interested in dogs and fluffy things. We encourage her to feel all the different textures (she likes the Old English sheepdog's fur the best), and she is so interested that she'll explore them several times before she allows me to turn the page. She also loves the moving parts and tries pulling the tabs herself. The book has been tossed onto the floor and thrown around more than I would like, and it has stood up very well to the abuse.
We have other books by Matthew Van Fleet, but this is my daughter's favorite. I highly recommend it to anyone with a child who loves dogs or touch and feel books.
UPDATE: The book has finally started falling apart. My daughter looks at it every day about 20 times a day. She ripped off the head of the dog shaking itself dry, and has now busted the spine. Would I buy it again? YOU BET!

Fans of Calvin & Hobbes who used to read the newspaper strip in the 80s and 90s will find great pleasure in reading this treasury of C&H comics. These witty comics about the 6-year old Calvin and his stuffed tiger Hobbes, named after the famous philosophers, will amuse people of all ages. The perceptiveness and humor of Watterson deserve the highest of cartoon awards, while his artistic creations exude hilarity. This cartoon is perhaps one of the most piercing yet funny critiques of modern society.

This book covers the first two years of the Calvin & Hobbes strip. One can notice how Calvin used to look different in the beginning. His character though quickly adopted his unmistakable attitude. Here we see his first daydreams about Spaceman Spiff, his relationship with his parents and with Susie, his (mis-?) performance at school, and his first invention: the Transmogrifier. His attitude to life and his quick temper never ceases to entertain. This is the book you can read over and over and never stop from laughing.

Note that there are two series of C&H collections: individual wide-format albums, each covering an entire year of strips (will call it âaeregularâ), and the vertical aspect ratio âaetreasury seriesâ which covers selected comics from two regular C&H books. Note that C&H ran for a year in newspapers, so thereâ(tm)s 10 regular books and 5 treasury books. Though the cartoons are slightly smaller in the treasury collection, each treasury book is far thicker and contains more strips than a regular book, and is furthermore less expensive, so treasury books are a real bargain. âaeThe Essential Calvin & Hobbesâ is the FIRST book from the Treasury collection, first released in 1988.

Calvin is a hero to all imaginative children, whether they grew up or not

Calvin is a young boy that is a hero to all people who had wild and vivid imaginations as a child and suffered for it. I possessed a very vivid imagination as a child and that made my years in elementary school difficult. I was constantly daydreaming of doing things like flying, sailing on a boat and inventing wonderful devices. Unfortunately, I regularly did them in class.
My major problem was when we were reading a story in our reading groups. I read the story very fast and then was required to sit there quietly while the others finished. Naturally, that was a problem and I spent some time in punishment. Coincidentally, the principal at my elementary school closely resembles Calvin's teacher.
Calvin is an inspiration to all people who imagine in their youth and then try to maintain that quality into their adulthood. If they can, they become the authors, artists, poets and architects and otherwise free thinkers that our society so badly needs.

And so it began.

This treasury included the strips from the first two collections of the comic strip Calvin and Hobbes. And if you don't know what you have been missing, you are in for a treat.

The comic strip follows the misadventures of Calvin, a highly imaginative, hyperactive six year old. How imaginative? His only real friend is Hobbes, his stuff tiger. But that isn't a problem because Hobbes is really a real tiger, at least in Calvin's mind.

Since this is the first book, things are still being established. But many of the strips staples are here already. We meet Calvin's parents, teacher Miss Wormwood, neighbor Susie Derkins, and bully Moe. We even get the first couple of run ins with babysitter Rosalyn. While we don't get the hilarious social satire that would show up later, we do get some comments on the environment and Calvin's obsession with polls. (He is constantly trying to get his dad to bend to political pressure by showing his standings with household six year olds and tigers.) And we get plenty of adventures from Spaceman Spiff, Calvin's imagination again as he tries to deal with the various aliens in his life like his parents or teacher.

I tend to read the later books more often, so I had forgotten just how go the early strips are until I picked this up. There are so true classics here, most of the time at Calvin's six year old nature. Not that I'd want my kids getting any ideas from Calvin. He doesn't see anything wrong with pounding nails into coffee tables or popping popcorn without the lid on the pot.

And that does bring up the only possible flaw with the book. These strips originally appeared in 1985-1987, so at times they are a little dated. Calvin makes reference to renting a VCR or wanting to get cable. But that doesn't bother me in the slightest.

This "treasury" collects the strips from the first two books. As a bonus, there is a story told in poem form at the beginning and the Sunday strips are in color. If you have the two books, you probably don't need this one. But if you don't have them, this is the way to go.

The day this strip ended was a sad day indeed. But thanks to books like this one, we can relive it over and over again.

Well, well, well is it gret or what?

No,its not just a bunch of random stuff, its a bunch of random funny stuff!! Its funny for Calvin being a little scared of Hobbes, and all that really funny stuff. Although Calvin's only a 1st grader, he sounds like he's really smart. So, I guess whoever is looking at this I have convinced them to buy it, just because it's so funny!!!!!!!

I am not sure I have ever met anyone who has read some Calvin and Hobbes comic strips and hated them. I suppose there might be a person or two out there allergic to stuffed toy tigers, perhaps, or had a horrible accident involving one. Those would be the only people I could think of that would not find these strips entertaining, no matter what age.
