As a pediatric speech-language pathologist, I found this book to be a helpful resource for professionals who work with children with autism and other developmental delays. The author explains biomedical treatments that many parents are interested in pursuing as they look for options and answers for their own children. I will recommend this book to client's parents and other professionals who are searching for additional information.

Wow, this book is amazing. I know that there is much controversy over autism, but as a mother of a child with this type of diagnosis it was wonderful to read a book that takes it from a different perspective. If the treatments used in this book work, then why argue the details. I assumed that this book would be a dry, factual book about the disorders mentioned, but it was captivating. As soon as I read a few pages I was hooked.

Perfect Resource Guide for Parents Considering a Biomedical Approach to a 4A disorder

This book is exactly what I needed. I have a six almost seven year old son who has been in ABA theraphy at a very good school for over three years. Unfortunatly, the ABA theraphy has helped but not nearly to the extent we were hoping it would. Since he is getting older and approaching (if he hasn't already passed) the age where he can no longer be cured (most things I've read said if you can't cure them by five they are who they are.... I hate those books)we figured we would try something we've been hesistant to do for the last three years.... biomedical treatment.

The thought of pumping my kid with up to 20 or 30 different supplements a day is scarry and something I hoped I wouldn't ever have to do but my son is getting bigger and more difficult to handle with each passing day.

We signed up with a company for sound and biomedical but I haven't received the confidience from the person we were going through. It seemed like they were just after our money and pushing all sorts of stuff at us that we weren't ready for. In defense of this I decided I needed to read up a lot more on this biomedical stuff. So I chose this book.

It has been a blessing to me to have picked this book. It has helped me realize that there might be hope for my child... if not a full cure.... at least a chance of some improvements. Improvements I haven't seen with ABA by itself. The first half of this book is explaining the enviornmental factors that "could" be causing this epidemic.

Some might say there is no epidemic but I do beg to differ. When I was a kid growing up in "kid area" the first time I heard about autism was the movie Rainman. Now, I'm raising my kids in a "non kid area - older area with fewer kids" and I have an autistic son, the people behind us have two on the spectrum and the neighbors next to them have a grandchild on the spectrum and another couple down the street who are raising their ADHD grandchild. It's everywhere and I do believe there are environmenal factors at work.

Anyway, this book does an excellent job the first half going through the reasoning of the biomedical approach with wonderful case studies. The second half of this book is a wonderful reference for all the biomedical stuff that you're kids can/will be on.

I also liked the fact that the doctor gave results of each of the therapis he mentioned so you have an idea what you're chances that certain things will actually improve your child. I like the fact that he doesn't guarnatee a cure like so many other people/books do.

Dr. Brock has written a book that I desperatly needed to read. Right now we are pumping my son with all sorts of supplements and we are seeing some results with it. It's early.... we've only been doing it for a month and a half. I know this is going to help him in some way and this book has helped me get over my fears of the biomedical approach and to give us a chance at helping my son.

Thank you Dr. Brock.

I will keep this short and to the point. Of the dozen or so books I've read on ADHD, this is by far the most informative and helpful book I've read. I found a DAN doctor and am currently treating my 8-year-old son with following the guidelines in the book. My son is showing slow but noticeable progress. If your child has any of these epidemics, I highly recommend reading this book.

This is an amazing book, you should read this book before you read any others, especially if you really want to understand the entire process behind these disorders.

This book was just what we needed to help us understand and control our son's asthma. Dr. Farber explains things in a clear and easy to understand manner. I keep this book accessible at all times. I definitely recommend it to anyone who has a child suffering from asthma. It's great for first time parents of asthmatic children and for those who have had years of experience as well.

This is a must read. It explains everything. It is a handbook to take with you on your next doctor's visit. It gives you guidelines on how to asthma-proof your home. It explains medication in ENGLISH. I like the book and have enjoyed reading it. If you, or someone you know, has asthma this is the book you should have.

I have never reviewed a book before despite always reading the reviews before buying a book. No book has ever changed my life the way that this one has!! My son was diagnosed in March 2003 and his doctor thought his asthma would just be something that was tacked onto the end of a cold and nothing more. Unfortunately he seemed to always have a new cough (classic asthma symptom). I bought this book because I was interested in learning more about the disease and becoming a patient advocate for my son. Having this book is a gift! It has changed our lives. We were scared and now we're prepared! My son has not had the cough since we started the program in June. We've been using the recommended daily monitoring and preventive meds and life is grand. If you're dealing with asthma, BUY THIS BOOK!

For you child's sake, I beg you to read this review

There is significant evidence that the root cause of many, if not most, cases of asthma (and many allergies as well) is deficiency of magnesium. This fact is discussed in detail by Dr. Carolyn Dean in her excellent book The Miracle of Magnesium. Dr. Dean recommends that all asthma sufferers take supplemental magnesium daily -- 600 mg daily for addults (proportionally less, according to their body weight, for children). People with asthma who follow Dr. Dean's advice about daily magnesium supplementation often improve dramatically even if they have continued to struggle with asthma under other treatments which omit magnesium supplementation. For your child's sake, please read Dr. Dean's important book and follow her advice regarding daily magnesium supplementation. It may well be the most important thing you will ever due to relieve this terrible ailment. By the way, although a variety of magnesium supplements are available, and beneficial, chelated magnesium -- which is readily available in most health food stores -- is the most effective.

This book is wonderful. Every parent of a child with asthma must read it. I have searched and searched for information this helpful and practical for two years. The book gave me confidence in our Dr. (who is always too busy to give us much information), but also pointed out some areas we need to work on with the Dr. I always question all the medication we give our son. After reading this book, I feel I understand asthma and the current treatment plans.

Common sense approach to mold for fixes not covered by insurance

Review Date: 2007-10-17
Many types of mold problems are not covered by insurance. Mold problems can become grave when they result in illness but you are retired with a limited income and cannot afford to bring in a high priced mold remediation contractor.
/
After reading this book I was able to identify what was making my husband sick with asthma symptoms whenever he entered the house. There was a leak in the AC system. Our AC is located in the attic and was sucking in moldy, nasty attic air.
/
I was able to identify the problem myself. I went to Home Depot and bought some AC duct tape. My neighbor did the fix. Total cost = $5.00.
/
Prior to this I had spent over $900 on testing by two separate companies who could not seem to find the problem. Of course they NEVER looked in the attic at the air handler.
/
Within days my husband was feeling better.

"Environmentally Friendly Mold Remediation Techniques" gives you the knowledge to take care of most mold problems yourself saving money as well as assuring that the job is done right.

Information in this book is not available anywhere else that I can ascertain. This is a serious book for those with serious concerns about asthma in both children and adults. It is not light reading but is well written and you can get alot out of the book if you are willing to invest the time.

Shirley Murphy, M.D. and H. William Kelly, Pharm. D., professors at the University of New Mexico Health Science Center in Albuquerque assembled an extaordinary group of contributers to review the entire subject of pediatric asthma. This incredibly up to date review covers natural history and epidemiology, pathophysiology and relation to allergy, testing and diagnosis, acute and chronic therapy, psychology and patient education, and specific outpatiet, inpatient and intensive care unit interventions with empasis on the pharmacodynamics of each medication in 15 excellent and highly annotated chapters.

This reference is oriented toward the medical professional, not the lay public or parent's of children with asthma. It should be used as the starting point of any future medical review of pediatric asthma.

One remarkable contribution is the inclusion of many tables that summarize the available original literature thus affording the researcher or student the full scope of the previous research. A very complete index of authors and subjects and an appendix of availabe drugs completes this review.

This is the fist book I've read that was written by Dr Fuhrman, so his theories were very new to me. I'm not sure what to think of his theories, to avoid meat and dairy all together. I will need to do more thinking and researching before I decide whether I want to follow his advice or not, but it was an interesting view point. The book did make me look at what I eat, and realized that fruit, veggies, and nuts were only a small part of my diet, so I'm trying to eat more of them. I give it 4 stars because although I don't agree with everything he says, I did find the book interesting.

This book contains a lot of valuable info for those who may not be in the know about sugar, processed foods, or artificial ingredients. I do feel that there is a bit of fear-mongering, but in today's world I would rather see a little of that than what I see many parents feeding their kids (especially when these same parents are constantly wondering why their kids are sick all the time!). For those of us who are health-conscious and raising our children to be so as well, this is a lot of "preaching to the choir" - but a little reinforcement never hurt anyone.

One caveat - he does advocate using soy milk and other soy products. I am not 100% anti-soy, but I feel that one needs to use soy sparingly, and as un-processed as possible.

Just an FYI for those who are not familiar with Fuhrman, he is an advocate of a raw diet... while there are some cooked recipes in this book, and even a couple with meat, a lot of them are raw.

I've tried a bunch of the recipes and my family enjoys them. The date-nut pop-ems were a huge hit with my toddler and she requests them often.

This is one of the BEST books I have read on nutrition and living healthy. The other BEST book I have read in the same regard is Eat To Live by same author Dr. Joel Fuhrman. Both books are a "must read". Dr. Fuhrman offers practical, straightforward informantion and anyone can comprehend and apply to their daily lives. His plan is simple and makes complete sense as we are faced with daily pressure to eat fast food, junk food and foods loaded with sugar, fat and preservatives. Some nutritous food may not always be as convienient as fast food but nutritous food won't kill you, fast food and junk food (empty calories) will. I plan to read all Dr. Fuhrman's books and apply his plan to my daily living.

You wouldn't leave home with your child not in a seatbelt but we are not as compulsive about the foods our children eat. This is the perfect book to build your child's immune system and carve the way for a disease free future. This also offers great recipes

He gives the truth, just not the whole truth

At first I liked this book. And then I was thrown a loop in life and my toddler developed intolerances to gluten, casein, and soy. It forced me to reconsider what healthy eating is.

I will start by reviewing the recipes in the book. I have only tried a handful and have met with little to no success. Either the recipe didn't work or my unpicky children would not eat it. For my family the meals were not balanced enough. I'm sure he would be unhappy to know that I had to add "meat" to his recipes for them to work.

He does give many truths in the book. For example, red meat causes cancer. He does not give the whole truth however. It is undigested red meat. Rather than suggesting you fully cook your meat and eat it in moderation he goes to an extreme. Every person is different. My family needs a lot more meat and substance in our diet to be happy and healthy. We are not bad people for it and not unhealthy as he would lead you to believe.

There are several extremist diets out there. This is the opposite extreme as Atkins but an extreme none the less. I would suggest reading Michael Pollan instead. This diet will work for a few I'm sure. But it will leave many unsatisfied.

Every mom knows in her heart what is best for her family. You do not need Dr. Joel Fuhrman to tell you. Listen to your heart and, to quote Pollan, "eat food, not too much, mostly vegetables."
