Perfect Resource Guide for Parents Considering a Biomedical Approach to a 4A disorderReview Date: 2008-10-10
The thought of pumping my kid with up to 20 or 30 different supplements a day is scarry and something I hoped I wouldn't ever have to do but my son is getting bigger and more difficult to handle with each passing day.
We signed up with a company for sound and biomedical but I haven't received the confidience from the person we were going through. It seemed like they were just after our money and pushing all sorts of stuff at us that we weren't ready for. In defense of this I decided I needed to read up a lot more on this biomedical stuff. So I chose this book.
It has been a blessing to me to have picked this book. It has helped me realize that there might be hope for my child... if not a full cure.... at least a chance of some improvements. Improvements I haven't seen with ABA by itself. The first half of this book is explaining the enviornmental factors that "could" be causing this epidemic.
Some might say there is no epidemic but I do beg to differ. When I was a kid growing up in "kid area" the first time I heard about autism was the movie Rainman. Now, I'm raising my kids in a "non kid area - older area with fewer kids" and I have an autistic son, the people behind us have two on the spectrum and the neighbors next to them have a grandchild on the spectrum and another couple down the street who are raising their ADHD grandchild. It's everywhere and I do believe there are environmenal factors at work.
Anyway, this book does an excellent job the first half going through the reasoning of the biomedical approach with wonderful case studies. The second half of this book is a wonderful reference for all the biomedical stuff that you're kids can/will be on.
I also liked the fact that the doctor gave results of each of the therapis he mentioned so you have an idea what you're chances that certain things will actually improve your child. I like the fact that he doesn't guarnatee a cure like so many other people/books do.
Dr. Brock has written a book that I desperatly needed to read. Right now we are pumping my son with all sorts of supplements and we are seeing some results with it. It's early.... we've only been doing it for a month and a half. I know this is going to help him in some way and this book has helped me get over my fears of the biomedical approach and to give us a chance at helping my son.
Thank you Dr. Brock.

Common sense approach to mold for fixes not covered by insuranceReview Date: 2007-10-17
/
After reading this book I was able to identify what was making my husband sick with asthma symptoms whenever he entered the house. There was a leak in the AC system. Our AC is located in the attic and was sucking in moldy, nasty attic air.
/
I was able to identify the problem myself. I went to Home Depot and bought some AC duct tape. My neighbor did the fix. Total cost = $5.00.
/
Prior to this I had spent over $900 on testing by two separate companies who could not seem to find the problem. Of course they NEVER looked in the attic at the air handler.
/
Within days my husband was feeling better.
Practical advice to fix hidden mold and thereby alleviate childhood asthma Review Date: 2007-10-16
"Environmentally Friendly Mold Remediation Techniques" gives you the knowledge to take care of most mold problems yourself saving money as well as assuring that the job is done right.
Information in this book is not available anywhere else that I can ascertain. This is a serious book for those with serious concerns about asthma in both children and adults. It is not light reading but is well written and you can get alot out of the book if you are willing to invest the time.

Pediatric AsthmaReview Date: 2000-03-29
This reference is oriented toward the medical professional, not the lay public or parent's of children with asthma. It should be used as the starting point of any future medical review of pediatric asthma.
One remarkable contribution is the inclusion of many tables that summarize the available original literature thus affording the researcher or student the full scope of the previous research. A very complete index of authors and subjects and an appendix of availabe drugs completes this review.

One caveat - he does advocate using soy milk and other soy products. I am not 100% anti-soy, but I feel that one needs to use soy sparingly, and as un-processed as possible.
Just an FYI for those who are not familiar with Fuhrman, he is an advocate of a raw diet... while there are some cooked recipes in this book, and even a couple with meat, a lot of them are raw.
I've tried a bunch of the recipes and my family enjoys them. The date-nut pop-ems were a huge hit with my toddler and she requests them often.

He gives the truth, just not the whole truthReview Date: 2008-07-23
I will start by reviewing the recipes in the book. I have only tried a handful and have met with little to no success. Either the recipe didn't work or my unpicky children would not eat it. For my family the meals were not balanced enough. I'm sure he would be unhappy to know that I had to add "meat" to his recipes for them to work.
He does give many truths in the book. For example, red meat causes cancer. He does not give the whole truth however. It is undigested red meat. Rather than suggesting you fully cook your meat and eat it in moderation he goes to an extreme. Every person is different. My family needs a lot more meat and substance in our diet to be happy and healthy. We are not bad people for it and not unhealthy as he would lead you to believe.
There are several extremist diets out there. This is the opposite extreme as Atkins but an extreme none the less. I would suggest reading Michael Pollan instead. This diet will work for a few I'm sure. But it will leave many unsatisfied.
Every mom knows in her heart what is best for her family. You do not need Dr. Joel Fuhrman to tell you. Listen to your heart and, to quote Pollan, "eat food, not too much, mostly vegetables."
