This is a wonderful tool for families who have dogs or are considering getting one. Tim Young offers advice, instruction and good doggie fun in this book and accompanying CD. His "Tuneful Tips for Tots and 'Spots'" will surely be a hit with the younger set, and entertaining for any dog lover.

In eleven original songs, and narration by "Murphy", a Boston Terrier with an English accent, the CD captures the listener's attention with lighthearted humor and toe tapping music, while enlightening on such topics as: What to do about strange dogs, hot and cold weather, traveling pups, chow time and trips to the vet. The colorful, high quality book offers the lyrics to the songs in order for young readers to learn them well, and a section in the back for parents with tips regarding each of the song's topics, fun facts, warnings and statistics, and a health record. At the end of the CD there is a brief "quiz" regarding the important information. If your kids aren't screaming out the answers, they are instructed to listen to the music again.

This book should be mandatory reading for anyone adopting a dog, and never before has mandatory reading been so fun. Kids, ages 3 - 10 will enjoy learning about doggie behavior with this book almost as much as playing with the puppy itself. Teachers, day care providers and library story time tellers will love this book and CD, and so will dogs everywhere.

We listen to this cd all the time. We listen to it in the car as well. It is so easy for the kids to remember the words and learn something important as well. I love it because it is so positive and uplifting and sometimes my kids and I will spontaneously break out into one of the songs and we have so much fun. I highly recommend this to all my friends and hope everyone will get this wonderful book for their kids.

I got this book from the library for my three-year-old. I didn't realize what a wonderful educational tool it was. It covers many aspects of fire safety and can open up an easy dialogue between you and your children about what to do in case of a fire. I have to admit I had never talked to my daughter about the topic because 1) it hadn't really occurred to me and 2) I wasn't sure how to not scare the pants of her talking about the house burning to the ground. But she loved the story and the illustrations all while effortlessly learning. Who could ask for more?

We really like this book and helped introduce fire safety to our 4.5 & 3 year old girls. It is a bit long for my 3 year old (she didn't sit thru the whole book, but was in the room and able to talk about it afterwards). Gets the conversation going about not hiding, a family meeting place outside of the home, and not going back for treasured items Highly recommended!!

The "Saving Our Teen Drivers: Using Aviation Safety Skills on the Roadways" book was one of just a few excellent reference sources for my safe driving CD "Mind the Road - Mind the Road: Waking Hypnosis for a Conscious Commute. The advice and recommendations from this book reinforces the suggestions my audio CD gives to drivers as they start their drive to have a safe and focused drive. I would highly recommend this book with my audio CD to help drivers be prepared for what potentials the road may present to them.

Teens as well as their parents will find John Loughry's Saving Our Teen Drivers an excellent life saving resource. Loughry's use of aviation safety skills in relation to the teen driving issue brings a fresh, unique approach beyond the typical driver's education that most teens will experience. It is packed full of information to help keep your teen driver alive. As someone who has worked with teens in the education of safe driving, I would highly recommend this book and consider it a must read for parents as well as teens.

We grown ups know better. I loved the examples and descriptions. Really useful information. Your kids should read this the month BEFORE they get their permits.

We have all read text books, instructional publications or technical manuals that are just plain boring. This author's style of intermixing stories from his flying experience keeps the book entertaining and makes it easy to relate to real life experiences. This is not the standard dry, preachy, recitation of the same old driving rules. This book should be manditory reading not only for new drivers but anyone with a less than stellar driving record regardless of age.

Written by family and child therapist and school counselor Stan Davis, Where Everyone Belongs: Practical Strategies for Reducing Bullying is a highly practical guide written especially for schoolteachers and other educational professionals, yet invaluable for anyone who oversees groups of children. Now in an updated second edition, Schools Where Everyone Belongs demystifies what bullying it is and common myths about its effects, what doesn't work to combat it, and most importantly of all, classroom-tested methods that do work to stop bullying and reverse its harmful effects. "When there are inconsistent consequences for bullying, young people are likely to continue. When we have to customize a consequence for each incident, the process of discipline becomes impossibly time-consuming. Planned, rubric-based consequences take much less time to administer and thus can be used more consistently. When consequences are predictable and based on a clear rubric, young people can learn from each other's misdeeds." An absolute "must-have" for grade school teachers and principals everywhere.

A bully can make a student's life miserable and make them hate school. "The Bullying Prevention Handbook: A Guide for Principles, Teachers, and Counselors" is a guide for school administrators to deal with the inevitable act of bullying and teasing in their schools. Dealing with both the bully and the victim through counseling is important, as are discussing things with both sets of parents, and how to reverse the damage caused by the act, as well as simply discouraging the act through education. It covers the wide range of types, from elementary school recess about a kid's large ears to cyber-bullying, to far more serious taunting of LGBT students in high school. "The Bullying Prevention Handbook" comes with a companion CD-ROM of extra material, making it a must for any responsible school administrator.

BULLY? Worst than Physical Assault

Bullying? Every school has kids who tease, taunt, shove up and beat other kids for no reason at all. Ignored, exulted sort of indirect bullying is worst than a physical assault too that kids face at School or just about anywhere! Bullying has just become of the most underrated but enduring problems in schools today. The cases rise to shoot up and as the survey speaks, it has been a challenging task for the mentors to instill the values of human relationships. Its sometimes the attitude of parents/teachers/adult that fail to instill moral values to the kids.Recognizing degrees of teasing and learning to cope with hurtful teasing are important life skills a child needs to learn. Often bullies become more unhappy and aggressive with age. When a bully attacks kids, they often feel ashamed and refrain from talking about it. Bullying Prevention Handbook offer resources tested and proven creating safe environments for students. The main topics presented by the author are the characteristics of a bully, individual and group interventions at home and at school. Discipline, creating life skills and safe environment at schools is necessary for child development. The Handbook is indeed a good 'guide'

Its long overdue ...the focus on bullying in our schools that is really taking its toll on children emotionally and preventing learning from taking place. This book has some great information for educators in middle school and high school on the topic- how to recognize it and intervene to stop it. Unfortunately much of this problem begins way sooner than that. We should be dealing heavily with this issue as part of the curriculum in the elementary grades as well. Bullying takes root as early as first grade. We need to begin there and be proactive. Fot this reason I highly recommend Bully-Proofing Children: A Practical, Hands-On Guide to Stop Bullying. The authors give invaluable tools for schools K-12, teachers and parents for preventing bullying and intervention techniques. Its emphasis also on teaching and preventing kids from becoming victims; making the bystander responsible for not allowing it and the comng together of everyone to refuse to allow it to flourish in schools and in the home makes this book truly the key to stopping it.

This book is the product of the National Educational Service, whose stated goal is to offer resources that have been tested and proven helpful in creating safe environments for young people. In addition to creating safe schools, their areas of expertise include: working in culturally diverse environments, containing crises, anger management, building life skills in young people, handling the threat of youth suicide, and discipline with dignity.

The Bullying Prevention Handbook contains a great deal of information, but the style of writing is clear and easy to read. Though there is no index, the table of contents is very clear, and the book is well laid out. The three main topics presented are: the characteristics of a bully, individual and group interventions at home and at school, and a specific anti-bullying education program. The authors provide references, an extensive bibliography, and many appendices containing multiple evaluation checklists and screening forms.

Though this book is billed in its subtitle as "a guide for principals, teachers and counselors," I recommend it highly to parents, as well. It is frequently only through the intervention of concerned, informed parents that excellent violence-prevention programs such as the one outlined in this book are implemented. Preventing violence in the schools is not a simple, overnight process. It requires the commitment and cooperation of the school staff, parents and the community at large.

This book provides useful information for the professional interested in decreasing bullying in his/her school. There are role play scenarios and discussion of teasing dos and don'ts. There are also reproducible screening checklists and surveys to measure the extent of bullying on your campus. How to appropriately conduct an interview with a bully is included as well. While this is not a comprehensive resource, it is a great jumping board to begin ridding your school of bullies and it provides a list of additional resources one may look in to.

This book is a great guide for parents moving kids through the "web" of the internet. She gives specific suggestions for young kids (e.g., Have all of their kid-safe sites bookmarked. They can only go to bookmarked pages w/o mom or dad.) through late teens (Let them make mistakes on the 'net while still at home w/our support!). Perfect resource for me. Quick read. Reminds me not to blow up when a kid comes to me with some issue- or they won't come to me again! Nice parenting advice and cyber-guide. Recommend.

I read Nancy's latest book, Cyber-Safe Kids, Cyber-Savvy Teens, on a flight this past week, partly because it's been sitting on my shelf for way too long, and partly because I knew I would be speaking a few days later to youth at a regional church meeting about technology in their lives. It is a great book on the Internet for parents, and don't miss the good material that she provides at her related website, www.cskcst.com, that you can download and distribute for teaching.

I've worked with kids and computers since 1979. Nancy Willard is my go-to authority for encouraging children's safe and responsible Internet use. Her latest book is theoretically sound, well-researched and comprehensive (including the very latest technologies) and offers a practical approach to this serious issue. It's also well-organized, with recommendations for specific age groups. Nancy knows all about the dangers and benefits of going online, and CYBER-SAFE KIDS will help parents act as guides and mentors, not cyber-watchdogs.

Most folks are aware of such internet dangers as free-flowing pornography reachable by kids, but how many are aware of all the other dangers facing young ones such as identify theft, addictive gaming schemes (as time wasters and replacement for real world activities), the ability to down load term papers and other works so as to avoid homework, or, again, the rights of sites to do whatever they want with up-loaded materials, a condition which can cause extreme embarassment and even financial loss? Willard's excellent text deals with each potential danger accoding to type and age group. Each chapter begins with an incident demonstrating the danger (an excellent awareness-building tool, especially for those of us who had no idea this particular danger existed)followed by an analysis of what is involved in the danger, and then positive and usable advice for parents on how to prevent their children from falling prey to the danger. But make no misake, Willard is a strong advocate of the benefits of internet participation for children when they are properly supervised, and that does not mean peeking over their shoulder all the time. This positive attitude towards the internet, the while recommending non-invasive supervision is a remarkably well-developed strength of her book. She is not whining about the dangers or urging censorship as so many gloom and doom critics do; she is providing a positive means for parents to help their children make the most of their web experience, an experience critical to every youngster in this age of the cyper-reality of communication. (A prototype parent-child agreement is included, and should be a valuable tool for developing cooperation among family members). As an educator, I find this book an essential tool for all teachers and school administrators, and, of course all librarians, who need this background to appreciate the pitfalls which may occur in classrooms and reading areas and how to be aware and prevent them. And a school board will find this study an excellent reference for developing appropriate policies for the district.

Real Dilemmas

Review Date: 2008-12-24
"Hot Issues, Cool Choices" is a collection of hypothetical stories about kids at one Emerson Elementary School. The stories are meant to illustrate problems children face in dealing with peers, and each story has a different theme. Here are some of the stories:

Angelina and Me (Compassion, Respect for Others)
Musical Chairs (Exclusion, Peer Pressure)
Promises, Promises (Social Manipulation)
Short, Shorter, Shortest (Physical Aggression)

At the end of every story there are some bullet points for "More to Think About" and "Trading Places" to get readers to think about the story's implications. Musical chairs is a good story to use as an example of what's in this neat little book. Nikki has wanted be in Caitlin's group, the "popular group," for a long time, and suddenly she is. Unfortunately, Caitlin has many rules for the group members, about what to wear, how to do hair, and especially who they can sit with at lunch. One day at lunch, because Taylor didn't wear her hair "right," Caitlin tells her there's no room, and to sit somewhere else. Nikki feels sorry for Taylor and wants to join her, but knows that if she does, she will be out of the "popular group." The "More to Think About" has -What do you think Nikki should do? Why? -How do you feel about Caitlin? -How do you feel abou Caitlin's group? -Would you want to be in her group? Why or why not? And in "Trading Places" is -How do you think Taylor feels?

Humphrey gives real ethical dilemmas which are very difficult, and require thought and experience to work through. Children, parents, and educators should read this. Incidentally, I think even adults who don't currently have children or are involved in education can profit from reading this.

As the author notes, bullying is a serious problem in schools, and there are kids who don't want to even get out of bed in the morning, because they know what going to school means. Hopefully this book will have an impact.

Unfortunately, bullying and peer pressure are a part of every kid's life. Sometimes, we are the one feeling like we just don't fit in and sometimes we are the one trying to get others to be just like us. Often, we don't even realize that we are hurting someone else until it's too late.

Hot Issues, Cool Choices is an excellent resource for school or other kids programs. The book contains scenarios where the main characters must make choices. Afterwards, kids are encouraged to question the actions of the characters. Did they make the right choice? What would you do?

It is these questions that will get kids really thinking. Then, not only do they know that they have choices but that that how they react in such situations can really make a difference.

The title says it all! Kids today have it tough. They are constantly faced with peer pressure, bullying, and harassment, yet so many of them do not know how to handle such situations. So here's what we have. Real stories with real social problems, but Sandra doesn't stop there. She writes in such a way that kids can understand and relate to these stories. The best part is that at the end of each story, Sandra offers excellent critical-thinking questions that kids can use to discuss not only the story, but give them a way in which to use it in their own lives. Excellent for raising self-esteem and establishing good social values. This is a perfect book for kids, parents and teachers to use as a solution to this never-ending problem.

As a teacher, I would highly recommend this book to kids ad parents, but especially to teachers to use within their classrooms, as so much of these situations do take place in the school environment.

A Most Important Book for Today's Children - American Author's Association Review

Humphrey continues with her series on childhood ethics and behavior with this easy-to-read offering. The author boldly tackles one of the most frightening subjects of today's adolescents since Columbine--bullying and its consequences. Humphrey follows the same format as her previous titles in the series, but with slight modifications that make it more appealing to an older reading audience. Vignettes are used to establish circumstances where moral and ethical dilemmas are raised. These are then followed by a number of questions that make the reader/listener to think about decisions and whether they are right or wrong inherently. This book, however, is more driven toward addressing decisions and behaviors that lead to, or in reaction to, bullying. The topics raised include Compassion, Empathy, Exploitation, and Social Manipulation. This is a book that teaches children though parables how and why they should avoid becoming bullies as well as how to react to the bullies they will undoubtedly meet. These lessons are presented well and make this book all too important in these times.

Nutshell review - This is an excellent book for parents and educators who do not have an IT background. It covers many important topics and provides some excellent recommendations for creating a safer computing environment for our children when using the internet.

It is somewhat limited in the specific protective software recommendations which largely come down to two main programs which are heavily promoted throughout the book. They are both good but there are additional and alternative technical measures that we can and should employ which could have been covered.

Although you can "lock-down" your own computers fairly well kids will still be exposed to the dangers via 3rd party computers at school, at internet cafes, and less well protected computers at their friends. Ultimately we need to educate our children on the dangers, make them more street-smart, and avoid an over-reliance on technical measures that often will not be within our control.

Greg Smith has done a very good job of providing a comprehensive and comprehensible resource. While Greg's approach to parenting might sound autocratic to some parents, but the fact is that it is ultimately a parent's responsibility to protect his kid (not that school and society at large are not responsible to protect our kids). While it educates technically non-savvy parents with the innards of the technology, it also provides a clear strategy to adopt the technical tools, corresponding to each age group. It is not a high level book, rather a hands-on approach book. He mentions many tools for monitoring, filtering and blocking purposes and one such tool is familyarmor.com.

Excellent Job!

The Internet and Web have so much to offer for both adults and children. I use it everyday and my children are also online daily. I check the news, email, and do research. I even met my spouse online. Also, my kids play games, chat with friends and explore. It's a great learning tool and allows them some freedoms to explore their interests. However, as the Web and Internet continue to impact our lives, there are very real dangers that I want to know about so that I can be sure my kids are safe when they are online.

What Greg Smith has been able to provide in his book are the specifics of how you can take the necessary steps to make sure that the Internet and Web is a safe place for your kids. Many books and guides speak in terms of general rules and ideas, but what Mr. Smith provides is real details and tools that you can put into action. He identifies the risks and issues being exploited and provides the leading tools, his experiences, and recommendations to protect you and your children. Even experienced technology professionals will find the comprehensive list of tools and technologies in his book a huge help. I have been using the Internet and Web for a long time and there are several things in his book that I did not know about, and that I want to keep my kids from knowing about.

Excellent book.

This book provides useful and easily understandable information for parents regarding protecting their children on the Internet. Even if you think your kids aren't using the Internet, they are. Statistics show that 96% of 13 yr olds use the Internet on a regular basis. So as parents, and as a teacher, it's important to know and understand how to keep your child safe.

I highly recommend this book for all parents. Even if you think your child is safe or that you know all there is to know, you can never be to safe when it comes to your children.

Greg Smith has written an important book for parents. Using his experience as a senior IT leader and a parent, he lets parents know the risks of children being connected and how to protect them.

The author makes the reader aware of the many dangers of connected electronic devices, not only computers but also cell phones. At a very young age, children are using computers and the age when children have their own cell phones seems to creep down every year. Many parents are not as technically sophisticated as their children, especially parents of teenagers. He urges parents to take control by learning about technology, using the tools available to safeguard and monitor children's activities on-line, and talking with your kids. His easy to understand recommendations let parents know what they need to do, going as far as recommending specific products and providing "How-to" instructions, customized for the age of your child.

As Mr. Smith states in his book, "You're just two clicks away from just about anything." Make sure your children are safe.

EVERY PARENT SHOULD READ THIS BOOK

If you read only one book on parenting ever, this is without a doubt the book you should read. Let's face it, your kids will be fine if you do not pick the perfect baby-mobile for them (as is the sort of topic included in most parenting books). However, it is too often that we see children severely injured or even killed because parents, intelligent and educated parents, were not made aware of the often quite simple safeguards that must be in place for our children to stay healthy and safe. As the mother of two very busy boys, I have found it overwhelming to think of every possible danger my boys may encounter. The news reports of children choking to death on everyday foods or strangling themselves with household items jolts our attention. We make the simple adjustments to safegauard our children from those particular hazards. However, most parents do not have the time to think of every possible danger or the information needed to keep our kids safe from them. Debra Smiley Holtzman has done this for us and done it well. Ms. Holtzman has tackled a huge amount of information and made it all easy to read, easy to retain and easy to implement. This is the most important parenting book I have read and I have read many.

A guide to eliminate the "Panic" in parenthood.

The Panic-Proof Parent is an exceptional resource for parents. Compared with any other book about child safety, Debra Holtzman has done an unprecedented job researching all the details that parents need to know, and she presents the information in a clear, concise, and effective way. This is not a simple repeat of the basic information you can find everywhere. It is an extremely thoughtful piece of work that reflects both her educational training as well as her deep caring about children. In an effort to thoughtfully address the safety needs of my family, I have looked through countless books on the subject. If I had it to do all over again, I need only have purchased one book - this book.

Did you know that you should never give honey to a baby under the age of one year? Or that lead may be present in your drinking water? How about the fact that you should make sure your water heater thermostat should be set at 120 degrees Fahrenheit or lower? If any of these items comes as a surprise to you, then you need the "Panic-Proof Parent."

Chock full of information that will help you create a safe lifestyle for your family, this book is one you should not be without. I was amazed to read about how many every day dangers are lurking in my house, car, in the air, and even in the food I feed my family.

I have read other safety books, but no other book is so comprehensive and well organized. The chapters are broken into a logical format, starting with recommendations that expectant mothers should do to guard their fetus.

Drinking water, pesticides, babyproofing, preventing burns, and pool safety are just a few of the crucial chapters that you will pour over when you get your hands on this terrific book.

Every parent worries about their children (it comes with the blessing) and some things are out of a parents hands. However, there are many precautions that you can take if you're armed with the appropriate information. This book will help empower you to do what you can to help ensure a happy, healthy environment for you and your loved ones!

A must for all parents!
