This is the second book that I've bought in the Story in a Box series. Behind the 10 pages of the board book is a hidden drawer that holds stand up pieces of all the characters from the story. A child can use the pieces to play along when being read to, and then continuing playing with the characters long after storytime is done. My niece loves to use the characters when reading the story; she even hides the grandma piece in the closet when the wolf comes looking for her -- just like in the storybook!

As a veteren member of a Search and Rescue team, I found this book to right on target for anyone going into the woods for a picnic, a day hike or an extended outing. The basic premises of Be Prepared and Stay Put once lost will help any person young or old who is confused about where they are and how to get back. The book is designed as a teaching tool for children with "science project" ideas which help young children learn key principles about staying alive and getting found. If more people read and used the ideas in this book, Search and Rescue teams would spend more time at home and less time looking for lost people. My children love the story and don't even realize they are learning valuable life skills.

Megan's Law Nationwide and The Apple of My Eye Sexual Abuse Prevention Program not only tells you all you need to know about Megan's Law; it also does a great job in educating you about childhood sexual abuse, the different types of predators, and what you can do to minimize the chances of your children falling victim to one of these predators.

Before reading this book, I was under the impression that I would be notified by the police if a sex offender moved into my neighborhood. I was shocked to find out that in my state, this is not so! Apparently, each state has the discretion to decide whether or not law enforcement is REQUIRED or NOT to inform the public. The book also does a nice job in outlining how schools can play a role in the notification process.

The childhood sexual abuse prevention portion of this book is a part that every parent should read. I had no idea of the different types of predators. I also did not realize how manipulative some of these people are, and how they try to gain your trust only to take advantage of your child. The tricks, red flags, and rules of safety are all great and should be read by all.

Lastly, the referrals given in the book are very handy. I used one to learn that my state did not require notifications. My advice is that, if you have children, or take care of children, you should read this book. You will learn a lot.

'Absolutely not! It would never be your fault if someone tried to harm you.'

My Body Is Mine! is a one-of-a-kind picturebook created especially to help parents teach children what they need to know to protect themselves from child abuse and sexual predators. Told through the eyes of 6-year-old Michael, who is about to attend his first sleep-over party, My Body Is Mine! recounts the wisdom Michael's parents give him about self-defense, Internet dangers, and unacceptable touching. "My dad explains, 'Any part of your body that your underwear or swimsuit covers is private. If anyone should try to touch your private parts or ask you to touch his or hers, say NO or STOP, then run and tell a trusted adult. This kind of behavior is a type of child abuse, and it is very unsafe.' 'Dad, would I be in trouble if someone ever tried to touch me in that way?' 'Absolutely not! It would never be your fault if someone tried to harm you.'" Color photographs illustrate this safety-conscious picturebook, an absolute "must-have" for parents to share with children, who are never too young to learn how to protect themselves from being victimized.

A former child's perspective
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-31
I am now in my 30's, but I actually persuaded my parents to buy me this book when it came out in 1985. Having grown up in the era of Adam Walsh's kidnapping, I was probably a little more interested in "stranger danger" than your run of the mill ten year old. I remember pouring over the scenarios in this book, and putting some of them to use - such as having a secret word that a parent would have a person say to the child if they were allowed to pick the child up from school or an activity (like "pineapple") It is very age appropriate for a child around nine to twelve, because it has a lot of photographs that illustrate the scenarios.
I grew up to become a police officer, so I am still obviously still interested in crime. I think it is important for parents to discuss potential scenarios involving strangers with their children, in order for the child to formulate a plan of what they would do if confronted with such an event.

Kids get hooked on it!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 1998-12-12
I've spoken to many kids who love the book and reread it. They say that hearing from other kids really appeals to them and the stories are mini-adventures. Each story is only about a page long. . . perfect for readers not ready to tackle novels. And for kids starting to babysit. All the stories don't have happy endings but the advice is sound and will get kids thinking.
