I am the author of this publication, which I wrote for the federal government. You can find it for free on the web by googling. I update it frequently, however, and you can get the latest edition for free by writing to your senator or representative and asking for CRS Report 95-815. Pardon my giving it five stars, but amazon.com requires reviewers to choose a number of stars.

An absolutely mandatory study text for first-time babysitters.
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-03
Author Dorothy A. Drago, MPH shares her decades of experience in the field of safety as a U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and a private safety consultant in From Crib to Kindergarten: The Essential Child Safety Guide. Written for parents and child care providers of all backgrounds, From Crib to Kindergarten covers how to reduce the risk of injury at home and beyond for children from birth to age five, a time when they are at the most vulnerable. Chapters discuss sleep safety, why infants should never sleep in an adult bed (an infant becoming wedged between an adult bed and the wall is the leading cause of infant suffocation death), preventing falls while changing diapers (caregivers should keep one hand on an infant or toddler at all times when changing the child on an elevated surface), hazardous clothing (buttons, snaps and shoelace accessories can come off and be choking hazards; drawstrings, ribbons and hoods can be strangling hazards), basic fire prevention, tips for preventing backyard drownings, and much more. Literally a lifesaver, From Crib to Kindergarten is a must-read not for parents, teachers, and child care professionals, and should be an absolutely mandatory study text for first-time babysitters.

Absolutely wonderful!

I bought this for my 11 year old daughter who had questions and fears of growing-up. She had questions she wanted to ask but didn't know how or even if she really wanted to ask. I wanted to answer all her questions but frankly, I didn't know the answer to half of them. I bought a christain book last year but was disappointed. It was so direct and cold. It had topics and illustration that were inappopriate for her age and no where did it draw you to give glory to God. I actually kept the book out of reach. With this book I just handed it over to her and she just loves it. It answers all her question in a question-answer format but does more. It engages you yet you could decide to skim though and pick and choose any topic easily. And one of the best parts is how it's sprinkled with bible verses where ever appopriate. There's parts for her to write in and "ask your mom or dad" sections to encourage bonding (so the book doesn't totally replace me). We absolutely love this book and recommend it to everyone.

The book came a little later than I expected and I was started to panic because my class had already begun and I had reading assignments but the book came in perfect condition and it is exactly what I needed! The cost of the product although expensive saved me $35 versus purchasing it at my college bookstore.Thanks.

My Grade One Class Loves It!!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 1999-10-09
I am a first-grade teacher in the public schools of Guam, a United States Territory on the far western edge of the Pacific Ocean. My school's name is Machananao Elementary School. For some time, I have used thematic units to facilitate learning in my classroom. Near the beginning of each school year, I teach a unit on Diet and Dental Health. This year as part of that unit, I frequently played the cassette tape 'Healthy Habits for early learners'. My students truly loved the tape and every time I played it, they specifically asked for "Pump It Up!". You should know that I have children from about seven different cultures in my classroom. Some are from tiny little islands in the Federated States of Micronesia, (Pohnpei, Chuuk, Kosrae, Yap) and others are from either the Republic of the Philippines or the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas, (a chain of islands immediately north of Guam.) I have long been a strong proponent of the use of music to teach all aspects of the curriculum and am currently researching the issue in pursuit of a Masters in Education. I want to personally thank you and your staff for producing the tape 'Healthy Habits for Early Learners.' Thank you sincerely, Royce D. 'Josh' Ledbetter

Co-authored by academicians Jason J. Burrow-Sanchez (Assistant Professor of Counseling Psychology, Department of Educational Psychology, University of Utah, Salt Lake City) and Leanne S. Hawken (Assistant Professor, Department of Special Education, University of Utah, Salt Lake City), and the newest addition to 'The Guilford Practical Intervention in the Schools' series, "Helping Students Overcome Substance Abuse: Effective Practices For Prevention And Intervention" was specifically designed to assist teachers, counselors, and school administrators to recognize and help their students deal with addiction and abuse of a variety of commonly encountered drugs ranging from alcohol and prescription medications, to marijuana, cocaine, speed, and heroin. Of special note are the extensive sections devoted to individual and group counseling, as well as consultation and referrals. "Helping Students Overcome Substance Abuse" is an important and strongly recommended reading for anyone in a public or private school setting having to deal with substance abuse issues among their students and their student's families.
