As the mother of three young children - one picky eater, one who can't get enough and one junk-food junky - I was thrilled to find a book written by a nutrition professional that can relate to the challenges of feeding kids. In this easy to read book, nutritionist Elizabeth Ward provides common sense advice on how to feed kids healthy foods based on both sound nutrition science and her experiece feeding her own children. Starting with "preparing for pregnancy," Ward covers topics that all parents want to know about -- breastfeeding, introducing solid foods, helping your child establish eating habits that will ward off chronic disease later in life, "super foods" for kids, food safety and more. I think what I like most is that all the information is presented in a really common sense, guilt-free way, and includes a lot of first hand experiences from mom's also trying to raise healthy kids in a "junk food" world. In my opinion, any book that can help me feed my kids healthfully without adding to the stress of child rearing is worth five stars !

As a first-time mom and not big on counting calories and daily values %s of each bite of my food I was not sure what to give or not to give and how much to give to my baby girl when she started eating solids.
This book gave me exactly the information I needed and more!
I am going to buy this book as a Baby Shower gift for my cooworker.

Many children's nutrition books offer unrealistic advice. This book, written by a dietitian and parent, is very practical and realistic, and helps parents figure out how to feed their children healthy food without making the dinner table a battle ground. I found the suggestions very helpful, and I plan to make this book my standard baby shower gift for new mothers.

I LOVE this book! I first discovered it in the school library of the middle school I worked in. It comes with a magic wand and secret codes to make delicious, kid-friendly recipes. I bought the book for my nephew's 11th birthday. As a Harry Potter fan and burgeoning chef he loved it as much as the children in my school did. I had to search far and wide, since the book is out of print, to find a used version that had all the pieces included but it was well worth the effort. I wish the publishing company would re-release the title.

Fun and useful!

This book is just great! Recipes that actually produce yummy food, presented in a kid-oriented way that engages them.

The rest of us might tire a little of some of the extra efforts involved, but it's not directed to us! For the curious, let me explain:

On the inside of the front cover is a "wizard wheel". This wheel contains foods on the outside, measurements on the inside. The foods on the outside of the wheel are the magical words for the foods and their english equivalent. Each recipe contains atleast one magical word-identified food, and you use the wheel (matching up an indicator to the magical word you need identified, and reading across) to translate (but many times you can figure it out: kristalshayks is salt, for instance).
Alternative "magic" terms are also used for measurements, like beaker is 1 cup. Those are explained on page 4, and are not on the Wizard Wheel anywhere.

If you are the type of person who likes to jump right in to something and figure things out as you go, this could cause problems for you! You should really translate your entire recipe before you get started!

That said, there is plenty of silliness and wit for those looking for such things. It's a delight visually, and the overall tone is very warm and enticing.

Creative and engaging!

I would highly recommend this book and anything else published by "Innovative Kids" My five year old daughter loves it and so does my nine year old son. The recipes are easy and fun with secret ingredients and magical "spells" that the kids can say as they wave the magic wand (provided) over the recipe they just made. The graphics are whimsical. This book is just really well thought out and original.

I bought this book at the school book fair as a birthday gift. When I got home My kids would not hear of it. We have been making magical meals out of it ever since. They had the hocus pocus pancakes one morning and swore that they felt silly all day. I then took it to work to show to my clients and I had to go back to the book fair and order nine more! My kids are 9 and 7 they believe in magic! This book should be advertised so more people would see it.

Fun Take on Good Nutrition

Review Date: 2008-11-13
If you are looking for a resource for kids that puts fun into developing healthy eating habits, look no further! The January 2008 release Janey Junkfood's Fresh Adventure! by Barbara Storper, MS, RD is a colorful and light-hearted book that shares the importance of eating well.

The book is written in a detective case file format from a kid's perspective. Fictional author, Tobe Fit, chronicles the eating habits of her best friend, Janey Junkfood (JJ for short, though her friend thinks JJ stands for "Janey the Juggler") and how all of the sugar she consumes is hurting her chances of making the Junior National Juggling Team. Tobe knows the importance of eating colorful, healthy foods - she just has to convince Janey that fruits and veggies are as fun and easy to enjoy as junk is, with better results!

The combination of hand-written notes, typed up reports and silly kid-style sketches and illustrated photos make the book fun for kids to pick up and flip through. The content is fact-filled and honest, but the fluffy, fun presentation makes it kid-friendly and puts the information in an easy-to-digest (pun intended) scenario. Kids are sure to enjoy it and ask to read it more than once.

As an added bonus, cut-out healthy recipe cards ("Tickets to FRESH Adventures!") enable readers to apply Tobe's fun snack lessons to their own lives. There's even a pocket in the back of the book to store the tickets once you've cut out the pages from the book.

I'd suggest this book for parent-child sharing when kids are between kindergarten - second grade (even younger if the format doesn't overwhelm the child). Book sharing between parents and children goes a LONG way.

There are some fairly decent vocabulary words and concepts that could use some decoding ("investigate" and "situation" aren't typical words for the younger crowd to read!) discussing if kids aren't familiar with them ("nationals" and some of the mock newspaper articles and factual reports). Beyond that, kids can dive in and read it on their own or with friends.

Janey Junkfood's Fresh Adventure! would be a fun book to share with small groups in a classroom setting during a nutritional unit. I'm sure physical education teachers would get rave reviews from their students for integrating parts of it into their lessons (you don't need to read the entire book to get the message across)! It is great for kids to see how books and literacy really do fit into ALL areas of their lives. Books DO have a place in physical education!

Nice lesson well told and wonderfully illustrated

Twelve-year-old Janey Juarez wants to be an internationally famous juggler. She has a problem though. She frequently drops the juggling balls. Unless she overcomes her clumsiness, Janey likely won't even qualify for the Junior National Juggling Team.

Janey believes an unusual routine might help her win a position on the team. She hopes juggling five balls, simultaneously balancing a loaf of French bread on her nose all while riding a unicycle, will impress the judges. This ambitious idea fails. Janey cannot even manage to balance a hotdog bun on her nose.

Tobe Fit, Janey's bosom buddy and the narrator of Janey Junkfood's Fresh Adventure, sees Janey's predicament and decides to help her. When she grows up Tobe wants to be a detective, so she investigates to uncover the root of Janey's trouble.

Almost immediately, Tobe spies the villain-a daily diet of junkfood. Tobe establishes a regime of healthy food to alter the quality of Janey's diet.

Based on FoodPlay's Emmy Award-winning TV special of the same name, Fresh Adventure is a child-friendly, interactive book. It is chock-a-block with ingredients that kids will devour. Each page is a tossed salad of colourful pictures, drawings, notes and memos, and Tobe Fit's piquant narration are hand-printed on separate sheets of loose-leaf binder paper.

Fresh Adventure explain to children the harmful effects of a diet obese with junk food and offers practical methods for transforming an unhealthy diet into a healthy one.

Two pages of Tickets to Fresh Adventures duplicate ones Tobe uses as tools in her scheme to gradually modify Janey's diet. Each ticket--from Yogurt Parfait, through Broccoli Forest, to Veggie Confetti--is essentially a simple recipe for a nutritious meal.

Kids of all ages will lap up the delightful story, devour the animated drawings and feast on the buffet of amusing techniques Tobe utilizes to make her case for a healthy diet.

As a matter of fact, this kid intends to return to page 17 for another serving of laughs from the hilarious cartoon figure in the drawing called Anatomy of a Junkfood Diet.

Armchair Interviews says: Nice way to give kids the message about eating better.

A fun and tasty book!

Do you want to eat better? Do you find yourself always wanting junk food even if you know it's not good for you? Maybe you just want to get to know more about better food choices. If you do and don't want to read about how to diet or want a book that stresses dieting, you need to pick up "Janey Junkfood's Fresh Adventure!"

Janey and her dog Tobi, which is pronounced `to be,' are your guides throughout the book. They go through an average day and explain what choices are available to you. Not skipping breakfast is stressed. You might think you will lose weight or be healthier by skipping it, but it's simply not true. If you skip breakfast, you are skipping nutrition that will be used through your whole day. This book is very easy to read and is a fun book without sounding preachy or too technical for kids to understand.

The pictures by Frances Schneid are awesome! They are bright and colorful. The ones that look like photos in a scrapbook are so funny and just add to the delight of this book. I think kids of all ages will enjoy this book and learn a lot about nutrition while having a lot of fun. In my opinion, the ideal audience would be kids in grades 2-6 but this could definitely prove to be enjoyable for kids outside those ranges. I wish Barbara Storper and Frances E. Schneid combine their talents together for more great books about issues that are important for kids to understand!

One taste of "Janey Junkfood's Fresh Adventure!" and you won't be satisfied till you are done indulging in the pages of the whole book!

Drawing upon her more than 25 years of experience turning kids onto to healthy eating habits, Barbara Storper (Founder and Director of FoodPlay Productions) wrote "Janey Junkfood's Fresh Adventure" because the average American boy or girl consumes more than 150 pounds of sugar a year (with one-third of it coming from soft drinks), while only one percent of American children eat the recommended servings of fruits, vegetables, calcium-rich foods and whole grains. Then there is the acknowledge problem of childhood obesity which is doubling among children and tripling among teens -- who in turn are also seeing an increase in eating disorders. Energetically illustrated by Frances E. Schneid and presented in a scrapbook-style layout, "Janey Junkfood's Fresh Adventure" will help children (and help the parents of those children) to understand that for reasons of health and well-being, children of all ages must break their junk food habits and addictions, while developing an attitude that good eating is also good fun with great taste. Simply stated, "Janey Junkfood's Fresh Adventure" should be a part of every school and community library collection in the country!

As a mother of a five year old, I can't tell you how delighted I am at finding this book. I wish I'd had it five years ago. This book is a must for any mother who wants to raise a healthy child, physically and emotionally.

This book covers a wide range of issues, from breast feeding to nutritional supplements; from herbal and homeopathic remedies to Chinese medicine. In chapter 6, "A Stay-Healthy Plan for the Cold and Flu Season," I found a great list to post on the refrigerator. Ms. Frederick uses a simple and direct writing style to explain everything in an understandable way. It is an ideal handbook for mothers on the run and pressed for time. This book will also make a great gift for a new mother.

This book offers so many insites into raising a healthy and happy child and specifics about what to do to keep your child healthy or get them healthy again if they've gotten sick - and without drugs and chemicals. Like most mothers I do not want to give my daughter unnecessary drugs, but I also hate to see her sick or uncomfortable. These natural remedies WORK and I feel good about using them. It is so great to have someone really help you when you have that horrible feeling of not knowing how to best help your child. This book is like having a trustworthy healer right in your home. Thanks Sue Frederick for your help.

I met the author at her booksigning. Although, I don't have children, I believed in her message and intended to give this book to my sister-in-law. It was so good, I kept it for myself. The sections on supplements, homeopathy, and flower essences are so informative and easy to read. Anybody could apply this information to improve their health. I will buy more books to give to friends who have children. This book should be in every parent's library.

A Mother's Guide to Raising Healthy Children--Naturally

Review Date: 2002-10-13
Sue Frederick has written about natural products for years. When her daughter was born, she consulted experts about the best ways to keep her healthy. She shares all that's she learned in A Mother's Guide to Raising Healthy Children--Naturally. She focuses on preventing disease and emphasizes that, while antibiotics can sometimes be very useful, they are not the solution for most childhood ailments. Frederick says that "natural medicine does hold the answers we're looking for."

She begins with breast feeding and the benefits it offers to children's immune systems. She then moves to a discussion of nutrition in general, saying that "the food you feed your child creates the foundation for her future health." Frederick warns strongly against giving children fruit juice, citing the effect all the sugar in it has on juvenile immune systems.

She devotes a chapter to the issue of childhood immunizations, describing each one and emphasizing that parents have the right to choose whether or not to have their children immunized.

Frederick also discusses nurturing, saying that "if your child feels truly loved and knows that you'll always be there for her, that inner peace and sense of security will help strengthen her immunity and ability to fight off illnesses." She includes commentary from a variety of experts, explaining how they've helped their children develop spiritually.

One section of the book is devoted to specific natural remedies for common childhood illness, such as colds, fever, colic, earaches, etc. Frederick then includes a complete discussion of the use of herbs, homeopathy, flower essences, Chinese medicine, and nutritional supplements, all with age-appropriate dosages.

She finishes with a "Child's Materia Medica," which explains how to use various natural remedies, and suggestions for a home health care kit, enabling parents to have everything needed on hand.

Jay Gordon, M.D. writes in the foreword: "Sue Frederick's book has helped me--and would help every doctor, health-care practitioner, and parent--remember one crucial fact: A child's body will heal itself naturally if we stay out of the way and use gentle remedies, wisdom, and guidance." Readers will find that A Mother's Guide to Raising Healthy Children--Naturally provides all the information they need to keep their children healthy and happy.

When Abigail and Adrienne's mom told them she had cancer, they were afraid. But when the girls couldn't find any books that explained what might happen to their mother and what they might expect, they wrote one themselves.

They tell readers when their mother was tired during treatment, friends and family pitched in to help cook and to push her in her wheelchair. When chemotherapy made their mom's hair fall out, friends and family threw a hat party for her and honored her with an original song.

Their mom's hair has grown back, and Abigail and Adrienne have found that their family is closer than ever. The girls' story will show other youngsters that they are not alone in their experience with a loved one's cancer.

Many children's books about cancer in a parent treat it as movie disease: a convenient way to introduce mortality. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I needed a way to let my children know what they could expect as far as my therapy, and let them know what might happen emotionally.

This is by far the best of several children's picture books written about a parent with cancer. Because it is written and illustrated by two sisters, it conveys what kids want to know. It showed the passage of time during treatment, and it showed that people were loving and kind and hopeful in the midst of a rotten time.

This book is excellent, and I would recommend it to any parent who has been diagnosed with cancer as a way to open discussions with elementary-aged and younger children.

After working with mothers and babies for over 35 years, it is rare when I find a book on breastfeeding that really excites me or teaches me something new. This book is both challenging and thought provoking. My colleagues and I have already had discussions about re-examining how we evaluate a baby's sucking skills. I wish I could afford to give this book to every pediatrician, ENT, and speech therapist who has told me that a baby didn't have any problems suckling or wasn't tongue tied. Hopefully this book will help shift the knowledge paradigm about infant suck and a babies ability to breastfeed. It should be required reading for anyone who works with babies.

This book is the master piece of a ten year old genius! She talks about the good, the bad, and the ugly when it comes to food, sleep and activity.
I'm thinking the kids who don't read it are definitely missing out. This little book is jammed full of clever 'takes' on everything a kid who cares about himself should know and practice. Should be reading requirement for all youngsters!

Recipes for Healthy Fun Loving Kids

"Three Green Salad" was written after 10 year old Aja King got the idea from a home work assignment while attending school in Shangri, China. The teacher asked the class to come up with a "potion." Aja wrote a potion for being "mad." Later she changed the idea around and decided to write recipes for happy feelings.

Aja puts grins and laughs, smiles and hurrahs in her recipes. Other recipes call for hugs, kisses, and snuggles. Aja also included a recipe for her favorite "smoothie."

Sandwiched in between her fun filled recipes are ideas on healthy living, including good sleep, good eating habits, and lot of fresh air and outside play. Clever illustrations done by Lisa Taron make the words jump off the page for fun reading.

The message of healthy living written for kids by one of their peers makes this a unique and important book. This is a book for the "kid's library," for elementary school libraries, and for the pediatrician's waiting room. A unique challenge for a happier, healthier childhood.

"Three Grin Salad" is awesome! It breaks down how healthy choices, when it comes to eating, can make all the difference in the world!

My Spanish is a little Rusty, sorry. I am definately going to buy this book. It explains bodily functions and is funny too. I also really like Spanish books because it helps my Spanish stay fresh. The English translations is "Everyone Poops". Caca is a much better word for it if you ask me. I am also going to buy this book for my Sister-in-law. She loves caca.

Great practical tips

My toddler was diagnosed with a peanut allergy several months ago. I recently purchased 3 items -- these flashcards, The Peanut Allergy Answer Book, and the toddler book "Mommy is this safe to eat?" The 3 complimented each other, and each serves a different purpose if you have a peanut allergic child. These flashcards are great because caregivers can quickly review them to understand risks for your child. Each card identifies one area/subject (such as bakery items, the ballpark, airplanes, the playground) describes the risk (if any), and gives practical tips for managing the risk. Although I have done a lot of reading since my son's diagnosis, these cards brought things to my attention I hadn't thought of, like the danger of my birdfeeder. I highly recommend these cards.

Very Good Tool.

I thought this was very helpful. I have purchased one for our house, the grandparents' house and am planning on buying a couple copies for my daughter's school (one for the classroom and one for the school nurse).

These great flashcards make it easy to learn about caring for a child with a peanut allergy. The fun illustrations and format are perfect for teaching children at home or at school. I can go through a couple flashcards with my kids while they are eating snacks.

The flashcards are also great for caregivers, grandparents, and neighbors. They highlight places you might not think to find peanuts. Using these can absolutely help keep our allergic children safer.

Now I have a better understanding of the peanut allergy

My co-worker has a child with a life-threatening peanut allergy. We would have conversations about her struggles when it came to leaving her child at school, with babysitters or even with family members. She shared these flashcards with me and it was a real eye opener. After flipping through the cards for ten minutes everything she had been talking to me about for the past year started making more sense. For instance, I would never have considered buying bulk food a danger but now I know that it is for those with peanut allergies. I now have a much greater understanding of why vigilance is necessary to keep her child safe. I would recommend these cards to anyone who around a child with these allergies.

I purchased this book for my son (almost 4) and he loves it. He asks me to read this every night and also requested that I prepare the snacks from the book (they're actually healthy snacks and could help to influence picky eaters). This was a very good choice.

My son is 2 1/2 and love Blues Clues, so this book was a win. It is interactive: lifts & flaps, and searches for "blues clues." Very colorful and exciting for a young child.

Blue is having a snack party. All her friends are bringing snacks. We discover what each is by lifting flaps that show the ingredients and recipe with the finished dish underneath. These are healthy snacks made by Steve, Mr. Salt and Mrs. Pepper, Mailbox, Tickety Tock, Shovel & Pail, and Magenta. In the meantime we help Steve solve Blue's Clues to discover what snack Blue will bring. A final picture of everyone with their snacks suggests the upcoming party will be festive indeed.

A nice addition to the Blue's books.
