Fun and useful!Review Date: 2003-11-30
The rest of us might tire a little of some of the extra efforts involved, but it's not directed to us! For the curious, let me explain:
On the inside of the front cover is a "wizard wheel". This wheel contains foods on the outside, measurements on
the inside. The foods on the outside of the wheel are the magical words for the foods and their english equivalent. Each recipe
contains atleast one magical word-identified food, and you use the wheel (matching up an indicator to the magical word you
need identified, and reading across) to translate (but many times you can figure it out: kristalshayks is salt, for instance).
Alternative "magic" terms are also used for measurements, like beaker is 1 cup. Those are explained on page 4, and are
not on the Wizard Wheel anywhere.
If you are the type of person who likes to jump right in to something and figure things out as you go, this could cause problems for you! You should really translate your entire recipe before you get started!
That said, there is plenty of silliness and wit for those looking for such things. It's a delight visually, and the overall tone is very warm and enticing.
Creative and engaging!

Fun Take on Good NutritionReview Date: 2008-11-13
The book is written in a detective case file format from a kid's perspective. Fictional author, Tobe Fit, chronicles the eating habits of her best friend, Janey Junkfood (JJ for short, though her friend thinks JJ stands for "Janey the Juggler") and how all of the sugar she consumes is hurting her chances of making the Junior National Juggling Team. Tobe knows the importance of eating colorful, healthy foods - she just has to convince Janey that fruits and veggies are as fun and easy to enjoy as junk is, with better results!
The combination of hand-written notes, typed up reports and silly kid-style sketches and illustrated photos make the book fun for kids to pick up and flip through. The content is fact-filled and honest, but the fluffy, fun presentation makes it kid-friendly and puts the information in an easy-to-digest (pun intended) scenario. Kids are sure to enjoy it and ask to read it more than once.
As an added bonus, cut-out healthy recipe cards ("Tickets to FRESH Adventures!") enable readers to apply Tobe's fun snack lessons to their own lives. There's even a pocket in the back of the book to store the tickets once you've cut out the pages from the book.
I'd suggest this book for parent-child sharing when kids are between kindergarten - second grade (even younger if the format doesn't overwhelm the child). Book sharing between parents and children goes a LONG way.
There are some fairly decent vocabulary words and concepts that could use some decoding ("investigate" and "situation" aren't typical words for the younger crowd to read!) discussing if kids aren't familiar with them ("nationals" and some of the mock newspaper articles and factual reports). Beyond that, kids can dive in and read it on their own or with friends.
Janey Junkfood's Fresh Adventure! would be a fun book to share with small groups in a classroom setting during a nutritional unit. I'm sure physical education teachers would get rave reviews from their students for integrating parts of it into their lessons (you don't need to read the entire book to get the message across)! It is great for kids to see how books and literacy really do fit into ALL areas of their lives. Books DO have a place in physical education!
Nice lesson well told and wonderfully illustratedReview Date: 2008-04-23
Janey believes an unusual routine might help her win a position on the team. She hopes juggling five balls, simultaneously balancing a loaf of French bread on her nose all while riding a unicycle, will impress the judges. This ambitious idea fails. Janey cannot even manage to balance a hotdog bun on her nose.
Tobe Fit, Janey's bosom buddy and the narrator of Janey Junkfood's Fresh Adventure, sees Janey's predicament and decides to help her. When she grows up Tobe wants to be a detective, so she investigates to uncover the root of Janey's trouble.
Almost immediately, Tobe spies the villain-a daily diet of junkfood. Tobe establishes a regime of healthy food to alter the quality of Janey's diet.
Based on FoodPlay's Emmy Award-winning TV special of the same name, Fresh Adventure is a child-friendly, interactive book. It is chock-a-block with ingredients that kids will devour. Each page is a tossed salad of colourful pictures, drawings, notes and memos, and Tobe Fit's piquant narration are hand-printed on separate sheets of loose-leaf binder paper.
Fresh Adventure explain to children the harmful effects of a diet obese with junk food and offers practical methods for transforming an unhealthy diet into a healthy one.
Two pages of Tickets to Fresh Adventures duplicate ones Tobe uses as tools in her scheme to gradually modify Janey's diet. Each ticket--from Yogurt Parfait, through Broccoli Forest, to Veggie Confetti--is essentially a simple recipe for a nutritious meal.
Kids of all ages will lap up the delightful story, devour the animated drawings and feast on the buffet of amusing techniques Tobe utilizes to make her case for a healthy diet.
As a matter of fact, this kid intends to return to page 17 for another serving of laughs from the hilarious cartoon figure in the drawing called Anatomy of a Junkfood Diet.
Armchair Interviews says: Nice way to give kids the message about eating better.
A fun and tasty book!Review Date: 2008-03-25
Do you want to eat better? Do you find yourself always wanting junk food even if you know it's not good for you? Maybe you just want to get to know more about better food choices. If you do and don't want to read about how to diet or want a book that stresses dieting, you need to pick up "Janey Junkfood's Fresh Adventure!"
Janey and her dog Tobi, which is pronounced `to be,' are your guides throughout the book. They go through an average day and explain what choices are available to you. Not skipping breakfast is stressed. You might think you will lose weight or be healthier by skipping it, but it's simply not true. If you skip breakfast, you are skipping nutrition that will be used through your whole day. This book is very easy to read and is a fun book without sounding preachy or too technical for kids to understand.
The pictures by Frances Schneid are awesome! They are bright and colorful. The ones that look like photos in a scrapbook are so funny and just add to the delight of this book. I think kids of all ages will enjoy this book and learn a lot about nutrition while having a lot of fun. In my opinion, the ideal audience would be kids in grades 2-6 but this could definitely prove to be enjoyable for kids outside those ranges. I wish Barbara Storper and Frances E. Schneid combine their talents together for more great books about issues that are important for kids to understand!
One taste of "Janey Junkfood's Fresh Adventure!" and you won't be satisfied till you are done indulging in the pages of the whole book!

A must-have book for every motherReview Date: 1999-12-29
This book covers a wide range of issues, from breast feeding to nutritional supplements; from herbal and homeopathic remedies to Chinese medicine. In chapter 6, "A Stay-Healthy Plan for the Cold and Flu Season," I found a great list to post on the refrigerator. Ms. Frederick uses a simple and direct writing style to explain everything in an understandable way. It is an ideal handbook for mothers on the run and pressed for time. This book will also make a great gift for a new mother.

A Mother's Guide to Raising Healthy Children--NaturallyReview Date: 2002-10-13
She begins with breast feeding and the benefits it offers to children's immune systems. She then moves to a discussion of nutrition in general, saying that "the food you feed your child creates the foundation for her future health." Frederick warns strongly against giving children fruit juice, citing the effect all the sugar in it has on juvenile immune systems.
She devotes
a chapter to the issue of childhood immunizations, describing each one and emphasizing that parents have the right to choose
whether or not to have their children immunized.
Frederick also discusses nurturing, saying that "if your child
feels truly loved and knows that you'll always be there for her, that inner peace and sense of security will help strengthen
her immunity and ability to fight off illnesses." She includes commentary from a variety of experts, explaining how they've
helped their children develop spiritually.
One section of the book is devoted to specific natural remedies for common childhood illness, such as colds, fever, colic, earaches, etc. Frederick then includes a complete discussion of the use of herbs, homeopathy, flower essences, Chinese medicine, and nutritional supplements, all with age-appropriate dosages.
She finishes with a "Child's Materia Medica," which explains how to use various natural remedies, and suggestions for a home health care kit, enabling parents to have everything needed on hand.
Jay Gordon, M.D. writes in the foreword: "Sue Frederick's book has helped me--and would help every doctor, health-care practitioner, and parent--remember one crucial fact: A child's body will heal itself naturally if we stay out of the way and use gentle remedies, wisdom, and guidance." Readers will find that A Mother's Guide to Raising Healthy Children--Naturally provides all the information they need to keep their children healthy and happy.

They tell readers when their mother was tired during treatment, friends and family pitched in to help cook and to push her in her wheelchair. When chemotherapy made their mom's hair fall out, friends and family threw a hat party for her and honored her with an original song.
Their mom's hair has grown back, and Abigail and Adrienne have found that their family is closer than ever. The girls' story will show other youngsters that they are not alone in their experience with a loved one's cancer.
Best picture book about parental cancerReview Date: 2001-11-15
This is by far the best of several children's picture books written about a parent with cancer. Because it is written and illustrated by two sisters, it conveys what kids want to know. It showed the passage of time during treatment, and it showed that people were loving and kind and hopeful in the midst of a rotten time.
This book is excellent, and I would recommend it to any parent who has been diagnosed with cancer as a way to open discussions with elementary-aged and younger children.

"A Recipe for a Happy and Healthy Life"
by
Aja King
Three Grin Salad is a delightful book that introduces healthy living and eating habits to young children.
Tucked within the pages between her favorite recipes of grins, gratitude, peace, love and joy, Aja tells of her daily life and how to play to be a healthy, happy kid.
Illustrator Lisa Taron has cleverly drawn images that keep the story moving and pulls the reader along.
Three Grin Salad is a lovely book written by a ten year old that will find its audience of other young children wanting to know more about how this talented young author lives.
Congratulations Aja!

Recipes for Healthy Fun Loving KidsReview Date: 2007-09-11
Aja puts grins and laughs, smiles and hurrahs in her recipes. Other recipes call for hugs, kisses, and snuggles. Aja also included a recipe for her favorite "smoothie."
Sandwiched in between her fun filled recipes are ideas on healthy living, including good sleep, good eating habits, and lot of fresh air and outside play. Clever illustrations done by Lisa Taron make the words jump off the page for fun reading.
The message of healthy living written for kids by one of their peers makes this a unique and important book. This is a book for the "kid's library," for elementary school libraries, and for the pediatrician's waiting room. A unique challenge for a happier, healthier childhood.

Are you a kid who is looking for a book about nutrition, but don't want to be overloaded with all kinds of technical terms? If so, then "Three Grin Salad" is the perfect book for you. Aja King is a 10-year-old girl who wants people to eat right. Within the pages of "Three Grin Salad" she tells of what she does or has lived. She offers many recipes of funny things and things like peace, joy and happy faces that will be sure to add to your smiles.
"Three Grin Salad" is awesome! It breaks down how healthy choices, when it comes to eating, can make all the difference in the world! There are pages for you to journal your own experiences and the illustrations are just so sweet. The expressions on the kids' faces are often humorous. Its bright pages are very appealing. This book is very easy to read and offers a wealth of information and insight from a kid who is just like me.
I loved this book and think it is a must read for every child. A lot of girls get misinformation about what makes healthy living habits, but Aja's book, "Three Grin Salad," is here to help sort out the bad from the good. I can't wait till I can read another book by this fantastic kid author!
