This boko is a great book for students to learn about food, water, health, exercise, clothing, cleanliness and many more health/nutritious information. I have learned a lot from this book because of the helpful definitions throughout each colorful page. I also enjoyed the number of exercises and helpful tips the book has given me for personal use.

This book is a short but sweet introduction into becoming a vegan. It gives valuable information on the moral and health reasons for changing your lifestyle to the vegan lifestyle. The author gives good advice on how to explain to your relatives and friends your decision to change your lifestyle to veganism. It explores different types of vegetarian lifestyles as well as exploring the vegan lifestyle. A valuable "Where to go for help" section is included in the back of the book. This includes places to find food and clothing for the vegan. A few recipes are included in the book also. This book can be read in a short time and is easily understood.

This well written book is the perfect follow up for those who want to know more about what adolescent girls really think about their bodies. An important work for parents, educators and anyone close to a teen. Also recommended: Mary Pipher's _Reviving Ophelia_. And the best thing of all? TALK to the girls in your life, and improve your own self-image.

Great Coverage but too advanced?

This book helped us learn where to start with solids, what to offer, how to make homemade, and how to progress to finger foods. Our only complaint is that at times the suggestions for finger foods were too advanced for our child's eating habits. After consulting other sources, I saw that my child's progress was great and that this book's suggestions were just that.

Good intro to foods from around the world
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.

I have Annabel Karmel's First Meals, and I wanted something a little different since it feels there are many interesting fruits, vegetables, and grains she doesn't explore. Food Adventures isn't quite what I was looking for, but I'm glad I found it. There are many interesting recipes for toddlers and kids, though the baby section is a bit brief for my taste (otherwise, I would have given it 5 stars). You'll find recipes for common baby foods in other countries, such as rice congee in China, blueberry soup in Scandinavian and Eastern European countries, and quinoa and butternut squash in Peru. Another nice touch...a chapter on first aid foods around the world, such as prune compote as a natural laxative, potatoes and carrots for a runny tummy, and mangu (a porridge made of mashed cooked plantains) for an upset tummy.

a great text
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2001-10-02
I found this to be a good introductory textbook for a middle/high school age food and nutrition class. The text covers a wide range of topics related to food. One finds chapters on healthy eating and lifestyle, being a vegitarian, how to design a kitchen, and food profiles from around the world. Other chapters even discuss eating etiquette, buying food, and careers in food. The text starts with the basics (this is a whisk...) for the kitchen and for food. One is given profiles of food, nutritional information, and cooking ideas. While it may seem too basic for students who have some knowledge of cooking, it does a good job of introducing it to those who have to knowledge of it at all.

The writing is informative and easy to read. The text is well illustrated with bright drawings and photographs that expand on the written content. I enjoyed the recipes that were chosen for each chapter - they looked fun and doable. In all, this is a well balanced text that fulfills its purpose of presenting food for today.

Honesty really is the best policy

Fuel Up!: A Girl's Guide to Eating Well provides much more than simple nutrition tips . It is a middle school girl's guide through the physical and social changes that they are likely to encounter. The book offers honest and easy to follow guidelines to eating and staying healthy. It includes and explains the food pyramid, and is loaded with fun food myths and facts, and side notes. A sample daily diet and exercise plan, healthy alternatives to junk food, and frank advice about when junk food is ok, are also included; The diet quiz is akin to those found in teen magazines. The author notes that there are no bad foods, just bad diets; photographs depict tween-age girls making healthy food choices. The graphics and clip-art style illustrations also add interest, but not much. The layout includes a large, readable font and pictures, sidebars and headings enough to be an inviting read. The style is a cross between a magazine and a textbook. Though the book includes and index, bibliography, and glossary, its lack of scientific terminology and explanation keeps it from being a respectable reference source. However, its upbeat graphics, language and layout make it a suitable introduction to health, nutrition, and body changes for teen girls.
