Good information but the recipes could be better

I bought this book for my daughter who already has cooking experience. I liked the idea that it talked about various health issues and then provided an activity and recipes relating to the topic. I had high hopes for this book but it fell a little flat. Often, there is not a clear connection made between the topic and the recipes. Also, we have had terrible luck with the recipes. I think they could work but they need to be experimented with. This is not something I think you should have to do when the book is geared towards children. I want my daughter to be able to follow the recipe and get the desired results. This has not been possible with the recipes in this book.

This book contains great ideas that are also tasty. My picky eaters enjoyed the Breakfast No-Bake granola bars, the Awesome Banana Berry Pancakes and the Creamy, Dreamy Yogurt Orange-Banana Frozen pops. We are excited to try many of the other great recipe ideas. The recipes in here are easy to follow, and taste great!

My son is getting interested in cooking and I wanted a simple cookbook for him. This one is filled with how to be fit articles and some recipes. I wish there were more of just the recipes and without wheat germ type substance in them.

this book is wonderful!!! i have a five year-old who loves helping in the kitchen and a two year-old (and a husband) who are both realatively picky eaters and this book pleases all. the recipes are completely healthy, which i love...and delicious to boot!! each is rated east, medium, or difficult (kid-wise), which is very helpful. the chapters are divided by the part or the body/body function that is most applicable. each chapter includes simple science experiments to bring another angle to this books education value. i have more than a dozen cook books, and this is the one i keep coming back too. i love it so much i am getting copies for my nieces and nephews for christmas!!

I recently found this book in my school's library. There are two reasons why I checked it out. Number 1: I am very interested in how society's impossible demands on people, make everyone think they are fat and needs to lose wieght. Number 2: I wanted to lose wieght and I figured this could help. So I check it out and read it. It is a great book that, from the way the author writes, is written by a person who lost wieght and kept it off.

This book really motivated me and gave me so many helpful hints that helped the weight come off. It helps you deal with how to eat what your mother makes for dinner and not go off your diet, how to cope witht the guilt when you slip-up, how to handle friends and family members who might encourage you to fail, and offers a plan that is actually do-able. I read this book several times throughout my dieting process and each time I found something new that helped me. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to lose weight without losing their minds!

It makes sense because it works!

Although I'm not a teenage girl, I was once, and I read this book before letting my daughter read it. I thought it was well done... it was humorous, but gave very sensible, sound advice that most diets or eating plans omit. I think the info would be great for adults who are chronically dieting.

One of our favorite elementary science project books! After tracing the outline of your child on a large roll of paper, each body system is explained, a picture of the organ is colored and pasted on their traced body, so that at the end you have an entire body with all organs and systems hanging on the wall to enjoy. So fun and easy to do.

My Body is a great book for anyone interested in teaching young people about the basic functions of their bodies. The book provides clear directions to help students construct a "replica" of themselves with scale sized parts. There are coloring guidelines for each part so that children also grasp a clear idea of what the body part looks like. The book then explains the function of each part in simple terms (appropriate for a 6-9 year old). I recommend this as a teaching aid for any health education teacher.

Good for young children

The explainations of each body part and system are simple and easy to understand, and my three preschool children love the coloring, cutting, and gluing they get to do when we do this activity... and I think they are actually learning about the body.

A great resource for parents who teach their young children at home, this book would likely also work well in a classroom setting.

This is a weak insipid uninspired story with art that is flat, amaturish, and unappealing.

As a children's librarian there is nothing that rankles me so much as a book for children that condescends to them. This MIGHT have an appeal for a three year old, after that forget it.

I am also a vegetarian and I find the depiction of food incredibly boring and the story is weak, very very weak.

Will appeal to children who like animals .

Not wanting to hurt animals, Victor, a young boy, becomes a vegetarian. To ensure that he is eating a healthy diet, Victor goes to the library to get some books about what types of food he should eat. On his way home Victor stops to read the books and he begins to daydream.
In his dream Victor is invited to a vegetarian picnic by a deer. The deer teaches Victor the difference between carnivores and vegetarians, including the difference in their teeth, jaws, claws and fingernails. At the picnic Victor shares the food of animals who do not eat meat. Rabbits share their vegetables, a giraffe offers some of her green leaves, cows share their soybeans, horses give Victor oats, a gorilla provides bananas, chipmunks offer nuts, an elephant shares peanuts, and a few mice hand Victor some of their seeds.
When Victor wakes up he goes home and tells his parents about his dream and that he has learned what he needs to eat.
Victor's Picnic With the Vegetarian Animals not only points out some of the differences between animals who eat meat and animals who consume plants, but also the types of food that vegetarians consume including: vegetables, beans, grains, fruits, nuts and seeds. Written by Radha Vignola, a nutrition consultant, nutrition educator, diet counselor and vegetarian, this book
will appeal to children who like animals and parents who have vegetarian children. –Reviewed by Glenn Perrett (...)

This is a story of a compasisonate boy who spends mealtime with the animals in the woods, and learns about what they eat. It is totally non-violent. My elementary school students love it, expecially if its companion tape recording is played along with it. It is a fun teaching tool for a few catagory concepts about animals and food,

The pictures of animals hold his interest, and the pictures of wholesome vegan foods have inspired him to broaden his diet! Kudos to Radha Vignola and Michelle Ary for making the ethics and nutrition of veganism so clear and appealing to little ones.

My 5 year old son LOVED this book. It brought tears to my eyes to see him sit down with this book after I read it to him and for him to flip through each page very slowly asking me questions and telling me what was going on on the pages. He has never reacted this way towards a book before so I know he was connecting with "Chad". I feel this book has given him a better understanding of his food allergy and I am very happy about this purchase.

This is a very good book if you have never prepared fresh food for your baby or toddler and want to venture beyond jarred foods. Some of the recipes are kind of no-brainers, and I wondered why they were even included at all. But overall, a great beginner book if you are looking for some simple things to prepare.

I bought this book when my twins first started eating solids, and it is my favorite so far. Some cook books for baby food include complex recipes that seem like they will take hours. The recipes in this book, however, are very simple, so that cooking my babies' food was no longer intimidating at all. It also includes a lot of recipes that seem simple but that I never would have thought of on my own. Pureed chicken and applesauce, for example, has become a staple for my babies. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that a couple of the recipes for teething biscuits did not work out at all. Overall, though, a great book.

Review Date: 2003-01-14
I wanted to make my own baby food, but lacked *any* knowledge about how to do so, as well as knowing when I should feed what foods at what age. I researched many other baby food books, and this one is the best by far. The author explains what equipment you will need to cook your own food, how to wean your child, and when to start on solids. The outline of the book is broken down by age, then by meal, snack, and desserts. The recipes are extremely easy to follow; they're step-by-step, along with color photos of the food being prepared. Most recipes are suitable for freezing, so you can spend one afternoon making a couple recipes for the entire week.

She also gives many helpful tips, such as teaching your child to feed himself, how to help a choking child, and going vegetarian. (This is not a vegetarian cookbook. There are plenty of recipes that include all meats, from beef and chicken, to lamb and salmon.) Once your child reaches toddler stage, there are recipes that they can help with, and the meals can be prepared for the entire family, with a few adjustments for the kids. She shows how to cope with a fussy eater and which foods are appropriate for your child's age. (I didn't know that 6-9 month olds could have cooked egg yolk, but not egg white.)

I really appreciate the variety of healthy foods that the author incorporates into your baby's diet. Some of these veggies I've never eaten, but once I made the recipes, I ate some along with my son. I'm actually eating healthier now that I make my son's food. This is a fabulous cookbook that centers on food for the entire family with a great emphasis on nutrition and taste!

I first saw this book at my girlfriends house and used a few of the ideas for my daughters 2nd birthday party. I bought my own copy, gave it to a friend who loved it, and now I need to purchase a replacement. The book has clear guidelines on how to make your own baby food accompanied with great recipes to try. It also has colorful illustrations to inspire you to add some fun into your meals for babies and toddlers.

I have had this book for over a year. I presently have a 2 1/2 year old and a 5 month old.

The first section of this book is very useful. It has lots of good information about first foods for baby, how to prepare and store them and when to introduce them.

However, I find the Family Meals section very cumbersome. Having to stop cooking in order to process or seperate something for the children makes it difficult to follow the recipes when you don't have alot of time to prepare dinner. Some of the meals need to cook for an hour or more...not very weekday friendly. Also, measurements like "1 and 7/8 cups beef broth" or "10 ounces of potatoes" just don't cut it for me.

Yes, he does reccommend a vegetarian diet for children. And...he tells us exactly WHY. This book is thoughtfully written and has easy to understand explanations of food and how it effects our (children's) bodies. I found myself questioning what I thought was healthy eating for toddlers. This is a great book that lacks recipes. I want to know what snacks to take to the beach and on a long car car drive - you can only eat so much fruit! And beans & rice are not finger food.

I found this book easy to read. It answers a lot of questions and is well researched. It advocates a vegetarian diet and explains why meats and dairy products are unhealthy.

If you genuinely want to ensure your childs future health, then this book is a must. If more parents fed their children this way and opened up their minds to an alternative and healthier way of eating, there would be far fewer sugar addicts bouncing around.

There are several recipes at the end of the book, and a sample list of items to buy for stocking your pantry.

A good choice for vegetarian parents

Gordon, a pediatrician from Malibu, California, covers this book with endorsements from some of the celebrity parents of his patients (among them Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman, Michael J. Fox and Tracy Pollan.)

What this book doesn't tell you on the cover is that it advocates a vegetarian diet for children. Which isn't bad in and of itself, but if you're looking for a more general childhood nutrition book you may want to include another book on your list.

There is a section of good vegetarian recipes in the back, and a plan to help your family eliminate meat and dairy products from its diet.
