The recipes in Real Food for Healthy Kids are truly amazing, from breakfast to dessert! For a special occassion, you MUST try Nana Elizabeth's Lemon Sour Cream Cake and 14-Karat Gold Cake.

This book is not only a collection of simple and delicious recipes (including a section on baby food and food sensitivites), but a resource for good, practical advice on cooking and nutrition that every parent should read and apply!

This cookbook is so easy to use and I love the all the recipes we've tried so far and the fact that they tell you accurately how long they take to make.

I loved the "What to Feed Your Kids and Why" section. I know what to feed my kids, I've been doing it since they were born and this section didn't have that annoying condescending tone to it, but gave me good ideas, reminded me of a few things and taught me a few things too.

This cookbook is a keeper.

Real Food For Healthy Kids is phenomenal cooking book that any kid or parent will approve of. Full of healthy, delicious, and easy-to-make recipes, I have learned a lot about cooking and have changed my opinion on it; cooking is no longer a chore for me, instead, it is a fun learning experience. This book proves that healthy meals are not hard to make, in fact, they are quite simple. The 30 minute dinners of chapter 6 have become an essential part of my busy nights when I have to cook for myself. It's nice being able to eat something homemade that is both easy and nutritious, especially when I've been studying for exams beforehand. As a busy student, this book has been a big help to me and a great learning tool. I would honestly recommend this book to anyone, whether you love cooking or hate it, you'll find recipes in here that suit your time requirements/limitations, your level of cooking expertise, and your taste buds.

Out of all the diet books that I have read, I love this the best. I am a 31 year old adult and used this book over dr. phils and lost 15 lbs. Very easy and clear cut well worth adding to the library.

Great book, especially for the appropriate reader.

Prior to reading this book, I had read Dr. Phil's adult counterpart. As an 18-year-old reader, however, I often felt that the book wasn't wholly appropriate for me as it referred to having responsibilities such as a career, kids, bills, etc. It also would include phrases like, "I want the body I had when I was in highschool!" This is obviously not relevant to someone that is still a teenaged student. At the time, I wasn't aware that Jay's book existed, but as soon as I saw it, I decided that I had to buy it.
Although this book is definitely more appropriate for a teenager, I think it is certainly written for a younger teen. Upon first starting the book, I was annoyed by the colloquial tone it used to establish a, "Hey, I'm young too!" type deal. He started the book with a line like, "What's up?" and uses words and phrases like "crap," "bs," "stuff," etc. He also frequently interjects anecdotes about his friends, family, and life experiences, and repeatedly talks about his involvement in school as a law student. Although I do think it's admirable that he is trying to establish a connection with his reader, it is a little over-done.
Aside from this being written for a younger person, it seems also to focus on severely depressed people with low self-esteem. For me, as someone who has never been picked on, has never had an issue with low self-esteem, and has no means to relate to the quotes in the book like, "I hate myself!!!," I found most of these parts boring. There is also an entire chapter devoted to those suffering from anorexia and bulimia that I completely skipped over.
You definitely get over it fast though, and this book was somewhat amusing and as easy read (written on probably a sixth grade level). I was able to read it in two days and found it difficult to put down. My above comments were not at all to criticize the author or discourage someone from reading this, but I would advise an older teenager to perhaps look into other options or even consider reading Dr. Phil's book and deal with the irrelevant parts.
The bottom line, though, is that this book is definitely helpful to anyone of any age. I personally liked the suggestions of ways to distract myself when I want to snack (I now will take a shower, go for a walk, or paint my nails). The nutritional plan is well-organized and easy to follow, and I actually like this chapter more than the one in Dr. Phil's book. There are certain "fluff" keys I think are used only to make the book longer, but the ones that help really do get the job done. I wish the best of luck to anyone embarking upon a weight loss journey; this book will definitely give you the push you need!

Really hit the nail when it comes to helping teenagers cope witht their weight problem. Jay addressess everything from how to have a positive out look on life to ways to start taking control of your weight. I was surprised at how much sense it made to me. It was like this book was written with me in mind. It addressed all the feelings i had towards myself and my weight and made me realized that their more to me than just how much i weighed. This book was surprising well written. Jay is a really talented writer and I thought this was just a knock off of Dr. Phils book, but this book really addressess teens and their issues in a way that is easy to relate to. Well Done.

Very good information.

This book was filled with a lot of information. Even though i'm not currently sticking to the "program", I found out a lot of information that I could share with others who are trying to get into a healthy life-style. If I ever get sick of being so over-weight, then I would find this book very useful. The only thing it did not do was make me realize how much I need to lose weight. But that isn't the book's fault. It's mine because nobody can get it thru my head that if I don't lose weight, I could have very bad health problems later on.

Imagine how disappointed I was to see a meal recipe that said to put a veggie burger on a bun......that's not really what I call cooking. Granted this isn't a cookbook, but even the ideas for explaining vegetarianism to your children were lacking in originality (tell them we don't eat animals). If I had skimmed through this in a bookstore prior to purchasing it online, I'd not have bought it.

We are a new vegan family and this book really helped me with the nutrition side of eating for my 18-month-old son and my 13-year-old son. As some other reviewers said, this is geard toward vegans and not just vegetarians, but it worked perfectly for me. I would recommend this book to any new vegans with children.

We a wanted nutritional help-mate for raising our vegetarian baby. Despite the title, this is a strictly vegan (no dairy, eggs, honey, etc...) bible that suggests a baby begin eating a soy-filled diet at 9 months, and processed soy-foods such as soy yogurt as early as 7 months! The book is preachy and filled with less than helpful tidbits - such as suggesting your child could develop diseases like Crohns if he/she eats dairy.

This is a great book; I've had it for years and recently re-read it. The insights into a parents emotions and feelings are spot-on; this is obviously written by someone who understands emotions in the context of food allergies. Even after living with this problem for 4+ years, I got a lot from rereading this book..

When I found out my son had severe peanut & tree nut allergies my life completely changed. I love the way this book was written. It has provided the support I have been looking for, for the last year. I have ordered more copies for family to read as well. Food allergies change your life, anaphalaxis is something that is hard to talk about, and accept. The author did a great job just giving the reader support, and making me feel like I am not alone....

i gave this book to my daughter's daycare. it's a quick read and gives a good overview of food allergies, how to manage food avoidance (with a chapter dedicated daycare/preschool environments), how to recognize a reaction, and how to respond to a reaction. it's concise and to the point, not bogged down with a lot of extraneous stats and info.

This book made me anxious and distraught about my daughter's condition with allergies. The author used many dark examples of negative allergic reactions. What an eye opener to all of the things that can happen to your child! However, I felt much of the advice and guidance was lost when the extreme consequences were used for every case example. One of the first chapters did offer some consolence that I was not alone - something that I appreciated reading. It is hard to remember that when you see non-allergic toddlers that can try a bite of any food that they want.

At last some real help and straight talk.

Are you Omega-3 deficient?
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-08
This is one book where I have truly learned how nutritionally deficient in a particular nutrient a person can become. Before reading this book, I had not even thought of whether my children were consuming enough Omega-3's in their daily diet.

The LCP Solution gives an excellent history of how as humans we have deviated from the normal staple of food our species once had consumed. Past humans depended on the intake of fish, but today with fast food and so many other options, fish is not normally put on the dinner table daily. In my house, we are lucky if we have fish every other week.

Further chapters delve into the details of exactly why Omega-3 is necessary for our bodies and more specifically our mind. Deficiencies can not only produce skin disorders but also mind disorders, which are manageable through the supplementation of Omega-3's back into our daily diet.

Real-life stores are included as well as relevant studies and research. The medical and homeopathic communities are beginning to fully embrace the topic. In fact, my son's ADHD Pediatrician, as well as his regular Pediatrician both recommend Omega-3 supplementation.

Omega-3 supplementation has become a nutritional priority in my house because of The LCP Solution. And I am very happy to report that my 11 year old's eczema has completely resolved, his language arts and reading skills have increased, and his ADHD has become manageable. I am not professing that you will have such miraculous results, but this book is definitely worth a read.

I've had this book for quite some time. It's ear-marked, highlighted, and pages marked with paper-clips. Very informative and proven true in my son's case!

I have read similar accounts in separate studies, along with talking with other parents. The EFAs can produce significant changes in our special kids!

We started the Essential Fatty Acids after reading about them on a Speech Apraxia site. That is only one of my son's diagnoses. I suppose his brain injury due to hypoxia (lack of oxygen) is our greatest challenge and his Dyspraxia, Mild CP, Speech Apraxia, and Autism Spectrum are secondary to it.

He was helped considerably when I was giving him two capsules after reading the Speech Apraxia forums several years ago. I mean, the EFAs weren't going to hurt him! After reading this book, I found that I needed to give him five capsules for three months and drop it to one-half for maintenance. His therapists noticed considerable differences and I had not mentioned the supplements to them. I wanted impartial input and they saw what our family was experiencing. My son had more ability to concentrate, less behavior differences, he retained information better, and more useful energy. His auditory processing difficulties improved.

I can't imagine any parent unwilling to help their child when there is no possibility of harm. In any case, the EFAs are beneficial even if one sees no apparent change.

As with other treatments/therapies/supplements, every special needs child will respond differently. We have used Nordic Naturals Lemon flavored oils and capsules. Dr. Stordy gives several recommendations in her book.

I recommend QUALITY EFAs to all moms of special needs children, along with this book! It is over 300 pages of helpful information!

I wish that it would have been available 16 years ago when my son was born.

Good info, but not the whole story...

The most helpful information provided in this book might be summarized in one sentence: Eating a healthy diet will help your family in many ways, and supplements can be helpful as well. Those supplements--more familiarly known as omega-3 fatty acids, the EPA and DHA of other nutrition-oriented books--have largely been lost in today's typical American diet.

Few people would disagree that there are genetic components to ADD, ADHD, dyslexia and dyspraxia. But that isn't the end of the story. Family members that live together also tend to eat similar diets, and eating habits are transmitted (though they may evolve) from one generation to the next. So implement a better diet, and add those LCPs. Just don't stop there.

What this book lacks is a meaningful discussion of a third factor: the role of situational determinants of behavioral response. That's a fancy way of saying that how the adults in a child's life manage and respond to the child's behavior does matter! No pill--Ritalin or LCPs or anything else--can make up for a chaotic environment or for inconsistent parenting. Developmentally appropriate structure and routines in any child's life support good behavior in the classroom and at home--and do it with empathy for the child's struggles to learn this new way.

For an excellent understanding of how to implement the third factor, see Dr. John Gottman's superb book, "Raising An Emotionally Intelligent Child: The heart of parenting." As a social worker, I recommend it highly--not only for parents of children with challenges, but for parents with children of all ages. Gottman (a psychologist) advocates what he calls 'emotional coaching' as the way to address problematic situations. If you read it and apply its principles, your life and that of the children with whom you interact with be forever changed in a better way.

This is an excellent book. The basic idea of the book is that there is link between lack of Omega-3 in the diets of people with ADD and other differences. The book offers research to help proove this theory. It also offers a suggestions on how to add omega-3 to our diets.

Is it possible to rate a book higher than 5 stars? When I first read this book, my first reaction was anger. I was mad, because I had never heard of most of the information in this book. This stuff SHOULD be in the public domain. Why hasn't the media reported on any of these studies? Then I thought about it. If this stuff really does work, many companies stand to lose significant billions of dollars in revenue from the sale of ritalin and aderall.
My next reaction was great joy. Finally, there was hope. No drugs, and still helpful. This was too good to be true. So, I tried it. First on myself (I was diagnosed as hyperactive and put on ritalin when I was 5 - there was no ADHD yet in those days.). After a week of supplementing, I found I was able to concentrate like never before. Both the quality and quantity of my work have greatly improved. I figured if it helped me, maybe it would help my son. He has sensory integration dysfunction, ADHD, and a few other problems. I started supplementing him on Sunday. When I dropped him off to school the next Thursday, his kindergarten teacher took me aside and asked if my wife and I were doing anything differently with him, therapy wise. At first, I forgot about the LCP's and said no. I asked her why. She said that it had been my son's best week of the school year (it was April). He was concentrating much better. He was able to complete his school work. He was speaking much better and much clearer. He was able to follow directions. He was getting along with the other kids. He had far fewer fits. In her words, it was like we had transformed him into a different child. I then remembered the LCP supplement and told her about it. We came to the conclusion that since that was the only different thing, that must be responsible for the difference. Our family life is also improved. He has fewer fits. He is able to handle change much better. When he wants to, he is able to concentrate much better. He is also learning at a much more rapid pace and has caught up to and surpassed many kids his age, academically.
Thank you Dr. Stordy.

This is a delightful fantasy filled book. I enjoyed reading it and I'm sure the young readers in your life will love it too. I found the book easy to read and the adventures kept me entertained and engaged throughout. I appreciated how the author wove important ecological lessons into the story without sounding preachy. I have found most of the kid's in my life to be VERY interested in the environment and what we can do to help save our planet and this book plays into that interest perfectly. I also think this book has enough adventure and intrigue in it to keep even reluctant readers entertained.

A great adventure/mystery book - one of my favorites.

I'm 9 years old and read lots of books, especially mysteries. I really enjoyed Curse of the Bone Pirates because it was funny, a little bit scary, and all the while entertaining. I feel like I got to know Big B, Sam and Nalu as real people and not just fictional characters in a book. Their adventure came to life and I actually felt that I was taking part in it.

It was hard for me to put this book down once I started reading it. My Dad would have to rip it out of my hands at night and make me go to bed. I didn't want to, though. I wanted to keep reading to find out what happened next.

This was a great adventure/mystery story. A lot of times I'm able to figure out the ending right at the beginning of the story. But with this book I couldn't. Every time I thought Big B's Grandpa was cured, the story took another turn and kept on getting more interesting, making it even harder to put down.

I recommended this book to my friends and my school's librarian. She read it and now she wants a copy to put in our library.

I hope B.T. Hope keeps writing more books because I really enjoyed this one.

I received "Curse of the Bone Pirates" yesterday in the mail as a gift for me and my son. As I was off work today I decided to take a sneak peek and found I couldn't put the book down! I'm a 43 year old swim mom who found this young reader book to be especially fun, exciting, educational and simply wonderful from start to finish. The book is simple enough for the younger reader to enjoy and understand, yet filled with such thrilling adventure, great story telling and a fun sense of humor that even parents will be delighted to read this with (or without!) children.

Big kudos to B.T. Hope for getting important ecological messages out to young readers. "Curse of the Bone Pirates" is destined to awaken the senses in children to learn more and do more in big, important and abundant ways.

My kids (age 5 1/2 and 3) and I checked this out from the library. They LOVED it and asked me to read it so many times I've purchased our own copy. Even though we haven't read it in a while, the kids are always asking if a food is a "green, yellow or red light" food. I'm blessed that my kids eat pretty healthily, but we do battle with candy and other junk occasionally. I remind them that if they don't eat green light foods they won't grow or feel well. I highly recommend this book!

This is a great building tool. Dr Sears teaches a simple system for making great food choices that my four year old has been using since she was two. The book is in two parts. Since she was been old enough to want to be read to, we have read the first part. The Green, Yellow and Red food pages are great for pointing to the food items. All foods are divided into these three simple categories. This helped with the toddler point skills and with learning what foods go with what lights. Now at four, when in public her father or I can ask "Is that a green light food?" and she will rethink a bad choice. Now we make a game of telling what food is what light at restaurants.

Later on, the book includes details about vitamins and minerals and what they do for us and what foods they are in. This book is already on my list for a Health unit home school study.

Great health information for kids!

This is full of nutritional information, in a bright positive format, but I found it too extreme for our lifestyle. I wouldn't argue with the information, but my children are not going to give up all fatty foods or salty foods or sweet foods. I just want to encourage the eating of what I call "Pretty foods" like vegetables and fruits. This book went a bit further than I'm willing to.

This is a great book for K-3 kids to teach them the basics of good nutrition. Dr. Sears is GREAT!

I didn't like how some of the ingredients used were things that I normally didn't buy(figs, parsnips, shallots, etc). I wanted a recipe book that used ingredients that I always have in the fridge, ready to cook. My daughter is not a picky eater at all so she did eat the food I made from this recipe book. But the problem was more so that I just didn't feel like using this recipe book because it didn't look tempting to make. That is my fault for not looking through the book before buying it (I just read reviews online). Also, I had bought this book when my daughter was around a year old, and by then she didn't want anything "special" that I had made just for her...she wanted everything I ate. And again, I didnt' feel like eating any of the recipes in the book so I just never really used it. In conclusion, this book does have some fun recipes that may work for some people/kids, but I recommend actually browsing through the book at a book store, and if it looks enticing, then buy it on amazon. Also this book may be a good guidance for people who have no idea how to start feeding their kids solids.

Really great recipes in here, and I particularly like how many family-friendly ones there are so I can cook for my husband and I PLUS the baby!! My only complaint is the fact that alot of the recipes include ingredients that I don't ever already have and have to specially shop for..but I guess it's no big deal overall.

The perfect baby gift

I've just purchased my sixth copy of this wonderful cookbook to give as a gift to a new mom and dad. The recipes are simple to follow and delicious - not just for babies and toddlers - and the advice is wise and gracious, without being preachy or precious as are so many books for new parents. My "baby" is in her twenties now, but some of the recipes have become standby's for me. I regularly treat myself on winter nights to the marvellous split-pea or roasted tomato soups from these pages. You can't go wrong with this one.

Before I purchased this, I checked out this book and a few Annabel Karmel volumes from the library. This is the one I ended up buying. The Karmel books had some good recipes, but they were on average, much more elaborate. This book includes a lot of health information, and the recipes are more practical and include combining foods I already have in my kitchen in ways I hadn't thought of before. it has made it a breeze to feed my 11 month old without buying all the over-priced baby food I bought for my older son.

Outstanding resource!

The guidelines my pediatrician gave me when my baby started solids were very vague and basically only listed the amount of fruits, vegetables, and cereal she should eat each day. Feeling confused, I turned to this book and found excellent guidance and menus. I love how there are suggestions as to how to make the meal for adults. The recipes are creative, healthy, and delicious. It is an excellent book for infants as well as toddlers.

I love this book! Its week one and I have went from 145 pounds to 141 pounds! Thats 4 pounds in just a week. This diet is easy to follow and made just for teenagers! I wish I knew about this book last year! I would recommend this diet to anyone.

While reading this book I'll admit I got a bit excited. But when you get down to it, they really didn't tell me anything I didn't already know. I felt the diet plan was very "LA-esque," the requirements of which I couldn't always meet in my NYC suburb. On top of that, a lot of their meal suggestions go against the new and updated food pyramid, and many of their recipes have A LOT of fat in them. Bottom line, there are better choices out there to learn how to eat healthily.

Wow- this book saved me!

THANK GOD FOR THIS BOOK!! After reading this, I FINALLY know the meaning of portion sizes and how to read those complicated labels on the nutrition facts. The workouts are fun (great illustrations!) and the food recipies are easy, and after eating the dishes I feel so much healthier and better about myself. I have so much more energy, and I'm just 18 years old! This book is not just for young teenagers, I'd buy this if I was 30!

I bought both "The Diet for Teenagers Only" and "Toning for Teens" by Joyce Vedral about 10 days ago, and I have already noticed a difference. Combining the healthy eating plan with the exercise program is already affecting me. I feel stronger (but a little sore) and I have more energy. Also, I have lost about 5 pounds! So I would call that a good start, if you do the math 10 days/5 pounds = 1/2 pound per day. The Pom tea recipe in this book tastes pretty good to me... and makes great popsicles! If it's not sweet enough for you, add orange juice or apple juice (both unfiltered with no sugar added). Also, the diet is pretty easy to stick to, make sure to keep a food diary because it does help! Even on days where I overate, I was still only eating about 1700 calories. These are two very smartly written books and they can help you on you goal to a healthy lifestyle!
P.S. A great way to make raw or cooked vegetables taste better without adding fat or even many calories is to dip them in vinegar-balsamic, white wine, distilled white, or many of the flavored vinegars on the market. Also, drink those 6 glasses a water per day. You will need to go to the bathroom more, but you feel... lubricated? I don't know. It just feels nice.

My kids liked the story but there was only one page that really focused on teaching good nutrition. Smoking cigaretes is introduced in the book also. I think that should be addressed under the drugs topic, not nutrition. I'm sure there are better resources for teaching kids about nutrition.

I Am Strong To The Finish Because I Eat My Spinach!

Some points:
1.) After doing a little research, I found the goal of this book is intended to be motivational. Why do kids love McDonalds? It's presented as fun and exciting. Kids don't want to eat at McDonalds because of the fact that sugars and fat are pleasing to the taste buds...

2.) My kids enjoyed "The Race Against Junk Food" very much. After reading this book to them (I have a girl and boy aged 5 and 8, respectively) they chanted, "Give me a carrot." Goal accomplished!

3.) I discovered that, as ridiculously simple and circuitous as it sounds, research has proven that one gets children to learn to eat healthy by having them eat healthy (lots of fruits and vegetables) at the earliest possible age.

4.) Reasoning: In order to survive over tens of thousands of years the foods of infants and toddlers were screened by Mother to prevent poisoning. Young children had to remember (instinctively) what those foods were in order to survive their earliest stages of independence when Mother was no longer around. These habits that are built into humans over tens of thousands of years are known as instincts. They never leave modern man.

5.) I think of this book as one of the tools I use to educate my kids about healthy eating. One doesn't take a screw driver out of a tool box and throw it away because it doesn't drive nails, does one? I have several other books I use to teach my children the facts about healthy eating.

6.) On an editorial level, I've got to agree with a reviewer that the story line and writing maybe get a C for the adult reader. On the other hand, what kind of Mother would return a $10 book, getting back maybe $3.33 after shipping and handling when there's any chance that the book would help her child to lead a more healthy life?

7.) Several years back, "Transformers" had the most ridiculous story line, but kids watched it in droves...

8.) I know I tried spinach (as did millions of others) after Popeye ate his!

This book has fun illustrations and an engaging story. It helps kids get the big picture about the effects of healthy eating (or lack of!) which I think is just as important as more specific nutrition information, especially in these grade school years. It's funny, I liked it, my kids were immediately interested in it, and I would buy this book again for a gift.

I have a six year old son who loves this book, especially the pictures. There are a few pages that have extravagant landscape scenes with tons of stuff going on and we play a "where's waldo" type of game to find all the different types of fruits and veggies and also find the different snack posse team members. He absolutely loves it.

The story is fun and not preachy at all and it's good to see my child with good eating habits on his mind. What more can I ask for?

I am glad that my best friend happened to mention how much her daughter loved "The Race Against Junk Food." We were talking about books for our kids. Having read KR's review (above) previously, I had second thoughts about buying this book for my son.

I would agree that this book won't win any literary awards. However, for me the most important critic of this book is my son. And he loved it! He's asked that I read it over and over again. And most importantly, he's taken a keen interest in eating healthy.

My understanding is that "The Race Against Junk Food" is supposed to be a MOTIVATIONAL book. There is plenty of "how to" books about what our children should eat. And still up to 1/3 of our kids are obese. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to know that we should all eat lots of fruits and vegetables. My issue is getting my son to want to eat healthy.

I would respectively suggest that from my son's point of view this book is like the movie that the critic pans and everyone else loves.
