Great approach to preventing food problems in children!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-27
I'm a compulsive overeater and was really pleased that one of the authors of "Overcoming Overeating" had teamed up with another to give us their approach on avoiding food problems. With a 15 month old, I wanted to know what I could do to help my son avoid the same weight/food problems I've always had.

Bucking the conventional wisdom, their advice to feed when/where/what children want has a truth to it that feels very right to me. When you remove the mystic and allure of sweets and "forbidden" foods, they no longer are a scarcity to be consumed endlessly when they're finally available.

Now I understand why the eating disorder specialist I know has all kinds of foods (including candy) in her house for her 3 children.

My only complaint is that the sections on babies could use a little updating. Breastfeeding, including extended breastfeeding, are much more the norm nowadays and the book almost assumes that a bottle is being used. Only cursory attention is given to the role of breastfeeding in a baby or toddler's diet.

Great book, and hopefully a few years from now I'll be able to tell you how well it's working for my family!

Raising Children Free of Food & Weight Problems

Eat when you are hungry, eat foods of your own choosing, and stop when you are full. That's the well-done message of these two authors, both of whom have experience with patients with eating disorders and compulsive eating.

These expert authors go over the "myths" of eating -- every meal must be balanced; if you eat now you'll spoil your appetite; you must finish what is on your plate -- in relation to how they affect our attitudes toward food.

Good case histories, anecdotes, and practical advice to make mealtime a pleasure again for all family members! Has one chapter on anorexia, bulimia, and compulsive overeating for those interested in those subjects.

Awesome book - best nutritional book for children

Review Date: 2008-07-08
I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a nutritional book for children. In my opinion, it is the best book on the subject. We searched for just the right book and this is it. I loved that it was so thorough, covering everything from great general nutritional advice to chapters for picky children, underweight children and overweight children, exercise and more. I am thankful it does not recommend diets for children but instead takes the approach of making good, heathy food choices. I loved the recipes and have tried many. My kids love the banana muffins in particular. I love the sample week long menu plan. My only disappointment with this book is that her some of her recipes, such as the banana muffin one, do not call for whole wheat flour. We have adpated those to using all whole wheat flour or at least half. This is a great resource that you will refer to over and over again and well worth the money.

This "must-have" manual for anyone considering or committed to breastfeeding is recommended for mothers, friends and family members, and community organizations, hospitals, and government agencies who interact with pregnant women and new moms. Well written and easy to understand, Ms. Barber's book is a culturally relevant how-to guide that offers information, resources, and encouragement to do one of the most natural, nurturing acts between a mother and her child. Far from preachy or pushy, Ms. Barber gently gives useful tips, real-life scenarios, and even a history about breastfeeding, particularly in the African-American community. A great baby shower present!

Fun Cookbook for Kids of All Ages! Highly Recommended!

Review Date: 2008-12-17
"The Book of Children's Foods" is a very fun kid oriented cookbook. Layed out with one easy dish per page and including fairly good pictures, these simplified recipes range from finger snacks to main dishes.

Not all of these recipes can be made by kids without adult help, the Sesame Chicken Fingers (page 92) comes to mind, but they are generally fairly simple and produce good results which will build confidence.

One of our very favorite inclusions involves the presentation more than the actual recipes, check out the Animal Bread Rolls (page 24) for the "Porcupines". They are a sure hit!

Highly recommended!

I have to say this is one of the best illustrated easy to do cook books I've seen in a while. My kids use it as a menu.... and until the wife had to chime in with her food preferences they pretty much ate everything exactly as pictured in the book. My little guys loved the egg mice, even my I don't eat eggs child. We did make a few changes from the start, ie raisin as opposed to currants or cranberries, and pretzels for other parts. The book is great I hope they come out with a second.

Finally, the metabolic book I've always wanted
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-12
I'm almost half-way through this book, and for the first time I'm understanding the concepts behind metabolic diseases. Rather than overwhelming the reader with biochemistry, the author helps organize the diseases into practical categories and emphasizes concepts rather than details. This book is a good read, plus it will serve as an excellent resource for future reference. Highly recommended for any primary care provider who cares for infants and children.

Excellent review of strategies for the evaluation of suspected inborn errors of metabolism. Simple and eloquent writing makes this an exceptional introduction to the topic for students, residents and fellows. Organized by organ system and symptom complex, it makes for easy referencing to generate a differential diagnosis as well. Would highly recommend for genetics, neurology and pediatrics training programs. It will be instituted into our required reading for rotating residents in our Child Neurology department. The price is very reasonable and well within the means of trainees.

Students will get a lot out of this well written volume about a terrible disease that strikes far too many women. The language is clear and concise, the facts accurate, and the bibliography extensive and up to date. Adults who want more information than Nardo provides can look up one or more of the books he cites.

As a member of the medical profession, I am impressed by how thorough, accurate, and thoughtful this book is. It covers all the major aspects of the issue of breast cancer, although no aspect is presented in great detail, since the book is fairly short and aimed at young people. Still, adults who have no background in or experience with breast cancer will find that it answers most of their questions. I particularly liked the first-person quotes from actual cancer patients. Their comments mirror many of those I have heard from patients I have worked with.

It's a great book for my kids to understand healthy eating habits!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-07-07
I have a very picky 18 month old daughter, and an extremely picky 5 1/2 year old son. My son understands that if Popeye eats all his spinach, he becomes big and strong. Well, since spinach isn't very tasty, he refuses to try other vegetables. Since reading this book with my son, he now loves sweet potatoes and says, "Sweet Potatoes makes you big and strong". My daughter was fascinated by the color and illustration of this book and eats whatever her big brother eats. Thank you, Yori, for taking the time to write a book that helps my kids understand healthy eating habits.

A great way to get your kids to eat right!

All of my kids, 11, 5, and 1, were drawn to this book. It really made them consider how their eating habits could be affecting them, both physically and mentally. Overall, very encouraging without boring the kids. Can't wait to read Dr. Srong's upcoming stories!
