A powerful presentation. This extremely graphic presentation is one of the most effective and affecting presentation on the dangers of drug use and abuse that I have ever seen. Its intensly graphic nature serves to highlight the commen age fallacy that drug use can be a fleeting and harmless flirtation. This guide illustrates the underlying compund cyclic nature of drug use that can quickly thrust the user into a network of unforseen problems. Most of us are familiar with burn outs but one would be surprised at how many drug users and pushers started out as mere burnouts until they become trapped beyond what they could bear, usually taking their own lives. Its a shocking wake up call to the misleading information society that suggests drug use is a personal choice that does not interfere with the safety of society. One would be amazed at how erroneous that type of subjective argument is, especially after coming away from this highly detailed presentation.

Do you want to understand why kids take drugs?

Review Date: 2000-04-23
I am studying a Masters Degree and have read this book as part of my research. I am now ordering it because I want my own copy. Though this book is academic in its structure, I found it a thoroughly enjoyable and insightful read. The world of drug taking and adolescents is filled with mythology and fear. For so many parents the ultimate fear is to find out that your child is taking drugs. Reading this book will provide a deeper understanding of this adolescent behavior. It does not discount the risks or discard the validity of parental fear, but rather provides a broad and realistic insight into the young people who take drugs as part of their social world.

Kids ages 13 and older will find Linda Bayer's Drugs Crime And Criminal Justice to be a 100+ page title essential for social studies classes studying issues of drugs and the justice system. The chapters comprising Drugs Crime And Criminal Justice cover America's early drug history to present-day legal and social systems, with black and white photos providing illustration. Highly recommended for both Law/Justice and Social Issues reference collections.

Browne KD, Hanks H, Stratton P, Hamilton C, eds. Early prediction and prevention of child abuse. A handbook. Chichester: John Wiley, 2002, 382 pages. ... (softcover).

This book is a new and updated version of a book published in1988 on the prevention of child abuse and neglect in the early pioneering days of child abuse research. The editors are an all British team from the University of Birmingham and Leeds with 38 contributors from the UK, USA and Australia.
There are 21 chapters devided into four sections: Prevalence and prediction, primary and secondary prevention, tertiary prevention and working with offenders.
In section I it is interesting to note that over the last 25 years, when several countries started to collect data on child abuse cases on a regular basis, there has been observed some evidence that the prevalence of child abuse has decreased. This good information can maybe be attributed to the focus on preventive public health approach that many countries have taken after too many famous cases of fatal child abuse covered by the media over time. Section II is influenced by the 1979 book by Uri Bronfenbrenner on the ecology of human development, but very much relevant still today. In section III and IV the issue is tertiary prevention with focus on not only the child and family, but also the offenders.
Much has happened since 1988 in many countires for a better prevention, intervention and switch to a comprehensive child health policy, but there is still a lot of work to be done.
I especially liked the chapter by David Olds et al from Colorado on his last 24 years of research on nurse home visiting in the prenatal and infant period. Here you will find the evidence base for early intervention of the model of the nurse visitor coming home already during pregnancy and continuing during infancy. This model was implemented in Denmark in 1936 on a national level and used by nearly 100% of all pregnant women in Denmark. David Olds et al in his studies in the Appalachian region of New York State (the Elmira study) and Memphis has shown that intervention early has functional and economic benefits with the greatest impact on families at high risk. Their Nurse Family Partnership now functions in 24 states and over 200 local communities in the United States.
This book has value for a range of professionals, both in research and clinical practice, policy makers and managers working in the field of child protection, child and human development.

I was forced to read this book as part of a rehabilitation program at my school, and I have to admit that I was skeptical at first. But, after I read Mr Werther's book, I changed my mind. Ecstasy is bad! It is bad for your heart and your mind. I thought he was "right on" when he talked about how it makes you nice. So nice that you might even give away important information like your moms credit card information! I like how it wasn't too long, but it really made me think. Now I'll stick to things I haven't read about!

I read this book back in my 20's and have reread it several times since then. I can only say that it put so many things into perspective. It has also helped me understand people around me and gave me the courage to take a lot of risks in my life. It's not a quick fix to make you happy, but the philosophy of this book does instruct on how to live with unhappiness and make better choices that can lead to happiness.

A sound sample of efficient group therapy
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 1999-01-03
A member of a therapy group recounts in her own words her personal quest for freedom from the traumas of sexual abuse. A group of eight women together makes a treacherous journey up through the depths of pain, despair, anger and fear toward newfound self-awareness and inner strength. The book describes a process that requires abuse victims to accept that they have been forever changed as a result of the abuse they endured. Group members are taught to constructively deal with the guilt, the anger, the rage, the fear and the despair stemming from their early experiences, and the majority makes remarkably good progress The described group therapy forms a basis for a further development of the group therapy called "Hope Alive" aimed at treating neglect and its devastating consequences on individuals and on society - not least the dehumanizing effects of abortion. This extremely efficient group therapy is further developed and taught from IIPLCARR (International Institute of Pregnancy Loss & Child Abuse Research and Recovery) iiplcarr@IslandNet.com
