A most efficient defensive mechanism of cancer cells against chemotherapy is drug resistance with its extreme, multiple drug resistance(mdr). These are the topics comprehensively addressed by the book "Reversal of Multidrug Resistance in Cancer", which could be considered even by now a milestone in the field. A sufficient reason should be the fact that the book places not in the beginning of the research of reversal of multidrug resistance, even not in the end. It is somewhere at the midway, as a light thrown over the previous studies and in the meantime orienting the future research. After the inspired introductory remarks, an overview of multidrug resistance follows, the particular emphasis being on P glycoprotein. Actually, the whole book is mainly dedicated to the multidrug resistance mediated by P glycoprotein. From genetic and molecular biology aspects to clinical assessment methods of p-gp, all are presented, pointing clearly the in vitro and clinical studies and the difficulties emerging in extrapolating data from one to another. Cytogenetic abnormalities are more or less specific markers of tumor cells and mdr phenotype seems to be associated with certain recurrent chromosomal alterations. Gene amplification, the homogeneously staining regions and the abnormal banding regions are extensively discussed and allow for a better differentiation of "intrinsic" vs. "acquired" multidrug resistance. A formal analysis of mdr phenomenon is the aim of a separate chapter. A mathematical model has been designed for the study of clinical tumor behavior; the depiction of the evolution from non- resistant to resistant phenotype is suggestive and could become a useful tool for a more suitable understanding of multidrug resistance. The chapter devoted to the multidrug resistance in human malignancies is an ample and synthetic atlas of p-gp expression and activity in most of human cancers. The specific patterns of p-gp mediated multidrug resistance are approached for each case in part, in malignancies such as leukaemia and lymphoma, to central nervous system and pituitary tumors. Chapter six is perhaps the core of the book, as it deals closer with the reversal of multidrug resistance in cancer. Ensuing the discovery of calcium channel blockers(e.g., verapamil) as agents interfering p-gp function, a profusion of new classes of drugs were found to inhibit multidrug resistance. Some of these molecules -for instance, calcium-calmodulin antagonists, cyclosporin A and its derivatives, hormones and antihormones or antibodies- are promising agents for the clinical reversal of mdr phenotype. The final outlook is illustrated in a quotation: "Cancer is in principle a curable disease"(R.H. Gaylord, 1906). That is, we have to look at p-glycoprotein and multidrug resistance and its reversal neither pessimistically, nor optimistically, but realistically. After revealing so many facets of p-gp and mdr, the corollary cannot be only a profound respect to cancer cells and their drug resistance, as an extremely flexible adaptative mechanism, reflecting the "unending possibilities of nature".

This tape is fantastic. Judie Chiappone's voice is both relaxing and calm, while also being positive and encouraging. And the information on the tape puts the listener into such a positive frame of mind (and Spirit!) that he/she feels that absolutely anything is possible. And with that belief, all kinds of opportunities for positive experience open up.

I recommend this tape most highly!

This book was very clearly written and gives an easy to understand discription of the uses of 5HTP and how it effects you body, mood and behavior. the author discribes in layman terms the role of serotonin in your body, how it is absorbed into the brain, and how to naturally raises the serotonin level to effect weight lose, depression, insominia, anxiety and more.

In the writing the author breaks the chapters into subject areas, depression, eating disorders, and other health problems providing questions and discriptions to help identify if your problem should be treated and if 5 HTP can possibly help. The chapters include important addresses where additional information and help can be obtained.

The book includes appropriate warnings, description of side effects, as well as explanations on how to use 5 HTP. The last chapter includes specific health tips on diet, exercise and life style all presented in a clear educational, non-preaching manner.

This book is a good quick read packed with useful information if you are considering non-perscription alternatives (5HTP) for addressing weight loss, depression, insomnia, anxiety and more...... at $5.99 suggested retail price, go for it.

STAR-CROSSED is a spectacularly imaginative story of two people who never met, and come from oppositre ends of the world, and yet know each other the moment they meet. The drama takes place in a medical facility, where the male major character is undergoing a potentially life-saving therapy and meets a beautiful Amerasian Nurse who can miraculousy save his life, IF they're lucky enough. Their story and drama is incredible and at times breath-taking, and transports the reader into a plausible world with both good and bad people in it, and where you hope the best people can win and have a good life. Superbly written and crafted!

Very fine technical work.

This is an important technical work for anyone concerned with Attention Deficit Disorder. While not ideal for those without advanced degrees, parents and adults in an ADHD system may find it worth their while to work through the highly specialized language. The articles assess from different scientific perspectives the trajectory of stimulant medication. While priced very fairly given its highly technical content, ADHD support groups maybe able to share the cost and the book. Members within the group could select a chapter, and then present it to their group. Most of the articles contain at least a few sections that will be understandable to non-scientists. Such a process could improve physician patient communication about the medication. Detractors of stimulant medication have to come to grips with the enormous relief that these medications provide for adults and children. While the specific locations and dynamics of the epenephrine and dopamine interactions remain shrouded, the clinical evidence overwhelming attested to the efficacy of stimulant medication. Until detractors can produce similar empirical data, resources have to be allocated to treatments that actually work. The book's purpose is to bring together the best and most current data available as a way of supporting and furthering pharmaceutical research. In this purpose the editor's and contributor's reveals science at its best, methodically navigating a dense forest of dimly understood variables in an attempt to relieve human suffering and push back the boundaries of ignorance. They echo our ancestors who learned to harness fire.

Ten years ago I worked professionally in the field of osteoporosis, and found this book to be an excellent and very well documented update on the science of calcium and bone health. I have always been a sceptic about whether we truly need so much calcium, but this book is so well documented and well written that I have made a dramatic change in my beliefs and practices.

This is the best book for medicinal chemistry.
