A Must for diagnosticians...

The book is one-of-a-kind. It has collected the experiences from innumerable mistakes, near-misses and pitfalls in one of the important branches in diagnostic medicine in one tasteful book. <br>It is easy to find your way around in. The book is well indexed. The clues to alternative diagnoses are displayed logically, but it takes you some time and thought to really appreciate what the differences are, the reasons for which is obvious: otherwise the entities would not appear in this book!<br>I think the included look-alikes entities are well chosen. The practitioner will meet the problems often, in my experience at least monthly. Probably we do it even more often, without realising that we should have given more thought to the alternatives. Therefore it will pay to go through the book when you buy it, which you should, to be aware of what sore experiences colleagues before us have made.<br>SO why not five stars?<br>The quality is a bit variable between chapters, although none are poor, though! On one occasion identical pictures have been used to illustrate two different conditions. The organisation of the entities within the individual chapters is not always quite "logical". On the other hand - is that possible? Probably not. The intention of the book is above all to warn us against the most common howlers with serious consequences in diagnostic pathology, and help us out. An organ system approach alone might be enough.<br>So I may go to four stars and a moon!<br>When you have got it, you will not wish to be without it again. The book deserves to be read to pieces.<br>And hopefully Drs Al-Sam and Lakhani will repeat their "Course on Pseudomalignancies" again soon. If you are lucky, register early that is, you will get it for free!!!!!!!!!!<br>But don't bet on that - there are many smart pathologists around that will nick your copy.<br>Have a good time with this book and become a better and more reflective pathologist.Pseudomalignancy incorporates all those conditions which are benign but microscopically may mimic malignancy. A wrong diagnosis of malignancy will obviously be translated into the wrong management for the patient with possible disastrous results. Total and Complete

This is a "vanity press", self-published pile of junk! Go to Google and enter "prostatitis and chronic pelvic pain" and look at the sites you get. They completely discount the theories the author Hennenfent (who no longer practises as a doctor - check the AMA listings) is pushing. What makes this so much worse is that the author seems to have some sort of relationship with the two or three clinics in the world which profit from applying the unusual treatments he recommends. Save your money!

The book offers nothing new. It was written by a nonurologist who is stuck in the past. Curtis Nickel's book is a better buy, IMO.The Prostatitis Syndromes was written by Bradley R. The Prostate - Everything You Need to Know

This book is one of the worst examples of an apparently authoritative work I have ever heard of. It has numerous factual errors and has a significant bias toward surgery which may mislead patients into a treatment modality that may be inappropriate for them. The statistics on cure rates for radiology and surgery are roughly the same, a fact which this author, despite his pose as a knowledgeable surgeon, chooses to ignore. Biased and Condescending

When focused on the topic of prostate cancer, Dr. Taguchi is a urologist/surgeon and as such, overtly biased in favor of surgery. He goes so far as to say "...The moment I have removed the prostate gland, in a three hour operation, the cancer is gone."<p>This godlike assertion is simply not accurate. As my own urologist explained it, in order to spare the nerves, the surgeon must leave some prostate tissue behind. There is always a chance that some microscopic foci of cancer cells could be left in that tissue. The surgeon should forthrightly present the mathematical percentages, rather than an ironclad guarantee.<p>In another passage, regarding modes of radiation treatment, Taguchi writes, "...about half of all prostate cancer patients who are given radiotherapy are permanently cured by it..."<p>Evidently Taguchi has overlooked published studies that show radiotherapy may be curative in up to 80%-90% of patients. <p>The following quote comes from a press release for "The Prostate: Everything You Need to Know": "[We] place a burden on the patient population when we ask them to participate in their choice of treatment... A specialist has spent four years in undergraduate university studies, four years in medical school, and five years in specialty training. Does it make sense for patients to make critical decisions for themselves after a five-minute lecture and an evening's exposure on the Internet?" -- Yosh Taguchi, M.D.<p>Taking Dr. Taguchi's quote as fairly representing himself as a professional, his attitude seems antiquated and condescending. More disturbing is that, on the one hand, Taguchi presents himself as an uninpeachable authority on prostate cancer, while on the other hand, his book reflects an utter disregard for a fair presentation of the full treatment-choice spectrum (not to mention a lack of correct and/or up-to-date information). <p>As a PCa patient, I enthusiastically took on the "burden" of participating in my choice of treatment (brachytherapy). It is my body and my life; after a long journey of research, interviews with other patients and numerous consultations with physicians, the treatment I finally chose was ultimately my decision alone to make. <p>It falls upon us, the patients (and those close to us), to set straight such biased, misinformed members of the medical community.<p> Now that prostate health is openly discussed, more and more men and their families are looking for help in understanding this small but potentially problematic male organ.
