This book has been written with lay people in mind. Scala writes clearly, concisely and with humor while dealing with a most complex subject. Is he right? His recommendations have certainly worked for me. In a short time I have begun to lose weight and my blood pressure is moving down. Not only does the book contain very important facts about the relationship of nutrition to hypertension laced in with encouraging stories about some of his patients, he includes good recipes and suggested menus. I think it's good enough that I will not give up my library copy until Amazon locates a copy of this now hard to find book.

I LOVE THIS BOOK BECAUSE IT'S EASY TO UNDERSTAND, AND SIMPLIFIED. IT'S NOT A BIG THICK BOOK WITH SO MANY PAGES TO READ. IT'S A SIMPLE BOOK THAT TEACHES US ABOUT EXCESS & DEFICIENCY OF FOOD. IT EXPLAINS ABOUT HOW DISEASE SETS IN IF WE DO NOT STAY WITHIN BALANCE, LIKE OVER EATING CERTAIN FOODS OR UNDER EATING CERTAIN FOODS. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK. WELL WORTH THE INVESTMENT & GOOD AS A REFERENCE.

It has taken a while to get necessary life style, and diet, with supplements in place -- it is worth the time and effort.
I have been able to rid myself of nasty "bp" drugs that did not work. I now have a "BP" of 110/70. I feel great.

This report, as well as the previous did, summarizes the current knowledge about an ever-growing issue. The guidelines provided in the report are usually regarded as canon for physicians and researchers as well. This report is freely available (as a PDF file) in this direction: http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/guidelines/hypertension/jnc6.pdf; however, at the prize displayed, it could be convenient to purchase it from Amazon.

Overall, the book is an excellent primer for the physician

Steeten's "Orthostatic Disorders of the Circulation: Mechanisms, Manifestations & Treatment" is a research-based thorough review of orthostatic circulation disorders. The author, who has researched the subject for 40+ years, provides the reader with definitions and descriptions of orthostatic edema and hypotension, and lists and differentiates between the various types of edema. Theories related to the pathophysiology of the orthostatic disorders are put forth. Diagnostic tests and interpretations of results from these tests are clearly described, but caution must be used in repeating these tests as described since some changes have developed since the book was published in 1987. Finally, recommendations for medical management of the disorders are provided. Overall, the book is an excellent primer for the practitioner who is unfamiliar with both orthostatic disorders, but particularly the elusive subject of orthostatic edema.

Very inspiring

The PCOS Protection Plan is geared towards women who have already been diagnosed with the syndrome and are looking for information about diet and lifestyle changes that can help them manage their symptoms and reduce their risk of future serious health problems. Very little background information about PCOS is provided.

Part One covers the health risks associated with PCOS (diabetes, obesity, heart disease, hypertension, etc.). Causes, risk factors, and warnings signs are discussed. Part Two covers the protection plan: diet and lifestyle changes that can help reduce and control symptoms and future health risks. Part Three covers motivation, medications and alternative therapies, and continuing research. Part Four offers PCOS-friendly recipes. There is also a glossary, extensive lists for resources and further reading, and a good index.

I have just finished reading a copy of this book from the library but I plan to buy it because it will be a very useful resource to have around. I have not yet discussed the protection plan with my doctor, but it does seem quite sound. Some of the advice (eat fewer processed foods, drink more water, etc.) is information that I already knew and have been trying to put into practice. But there is a lot of information that I didn't know (especially regarding how the body processes food and the benefits and dangers of many different nutrients and substances) and the plans for implementing changes and staying motivated are very inspiring to me.

I was diagnosed two years ago, when I was having fertility problems. But I am not overweight and not insulin resistant. Nevertheless, having a plan to follow is very comforting to me in reducing my health risks in the future and doing what I can to minimize my symptoms.

A Timely Book
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-01-10
This is a thoughful book for the general population on the pervasive problem of hypertension. It takes the reader behind the phenomenon of blood pressure and its relationship to the number one killers of heart attack and stroke.

The bottom line is that extensive studies by Dr. Robert Schneider and others show that Transcendental Meditation as part of Maharishi's Vedic Approach to Health was found to improve blood pressure to levels comparable to that of drugs but without the harmful side effects. Definitely worth reading if you want to normalize your blood pressure.
