It's nice, simple reading for all. As one of the only autobiographies by a person with JRA, Nicole's Story is a nice resource for understanding, sympathizing, and empathizing if you have JRA. My daughter has JRA and I'm sure she'll be glad to have this book so she can see that she is not alone. I think I'll share it with her teachers and classmates too.

This pictorial book of a real life story of Nicole, a little girl with arthritis kept my children's attention. My daughter has juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and this book helped her to see she is not alone in her struggles. She can easily relate to Nicole. I also gave this book to both my children's teachers for their classroom collection. It explains alot about JRA as well as making it 'acceptable'. They found it to be informative as well as touching.

Great Job Nicole. A great gift for any child or parent.

Great book! I recommend this book for parents as well as teachers and medical professionals who work with patients suffering from JRA. I've had JRA for 17 years and was finally diagnosed at age 16, after two years of symptoms and suffering from the crippling RA pain.

The list of resources in this book will help any parent or patient work out problems they may encounter living with this disease. As an author it's great to see, and use a book that takes JRA seriously from a child's point of view. I've resourced many books written by medical professionals that lecture patients on how to cope. But Nicole's Story goes the the heart of what all of us living, coping, and surviving with RA and JRA experience on a daily basis. And I plan to use it in all my support groups for kids and teen living with JRA.

Nicole's Story will help discard the myth that Arthritis is just "an old person's disease." Kids coping with JRA have now found a voice. I hope more people will take the time to listen. Bravo Nicole!

This book sends out a great message to young people stricken down with this painful disease. I was diagnosed with JRA when I was fourteen, and I'm 15 now. Thing is, we aren't stricken down. With the help of medical science and power of God, we'll always find a way to live through yet another day that drags on to feel like an eternity. This is a book every JRA-RA patient should read, young or adult. My love and prayers go out to Nicole and her family, plus all the rest of us with this formerly "crippling" disease. But there's hope if you catch it soon enough. I had it for months before we got a diagnosis.

Stop Arthritis: How I Defeated It Naturally is the true story of one man's defiance of traditional medical treatment for incurable arthritis. Abandoning his medication, Alan Schlines sought to improve his personal lifestyle by eating healthier foods, learning detoxification techniques, learning the wisdom of natural health care professionals and more. In the process Alan became arthritis pain-free and stayed that way for over 10 years. Highly recommended for its insights into improving overall health, Stop Arthritis is especially recommended reading for anyone who suffers from this common ailment which is shared by an estimated 70 million Americans.

The author explains how drugs only interfere with the body's natural healing process and how improving the immune system is the key to beating this disease. I recommend that anyone who is tired of dealing with the pain should buy this book asap to help heal their body.

This is the 2nd copy of this book I've bought. The first was for myself and has been a great help with my rheumatoid arthritis over the years. Now that my daughter has been diagnosed with the same disease, I wanted her to have a copy for her own, not just my borrowed copy. Besides, I needed mine back!

The idea that we can take charge of our disease and make informed decisions, and especially, improve our condition through strength training is an empowering concept. The book discusses everything from diet to drugs to alternative treatments, with detailed instructions and diagrams on stretching and strength exercises that can be done at home and really make a difference.

I showed this book to my rheumatologist, and he was quite impressed. I'd recommend it for anyone with arthritis.

No hype, just good, sound information.

I am the kind of person that is not going to buy or "buy into" a book unless it is supported by some reasonable evidence. If you're like me, then you'll love this book. It is based on a study recently conducted at the Tufts University. In short, the study used a program of exercise and nutrition to combat arthritis. The results? Pain was reduced by a whopping 43%!

Key to their program was strengthening exercises which have been shown in other studies as well as being extremely beneficial for arthritis patients. I am very pleased with books like these that offer sound treatments based on research. If you like these kind of books too and also suffer from back pain, I can recommend "The Multifidus Back Pain Solution" (available here at amazon.ca too) that is based on randomized controlled trials and involves only one exercise you do at home that strengthens your multifidus muscles found to be abnormal in many people with back pain. So start reading, start exercising, and start getting better!

I was recently diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis, and I started following the nutritional suggestions in this book. I think it's already starting to help! Plus it tells you how to perform strengthening exercises for your aching joints. I am a big fan of Dr. Nelson's other works. I like how she explains the science and the applications. I plan to share this with my mom, who also has osteoarthritis.

Strong Men and Women Beat Arthritis by Dr. Nelson

Review Date: 2003-10-30
This is an excellent work on the alternative medicinal and
conventional medicine protocols for arthritis. Dr. Nelson
mentions various Vit C dietary combinations utilizing
orange juice, strawberries or grapefruit to provide Vit. C.
Next, the authors cite important anti-inflammatory combos;
such as, Omega 3 fish oil and flaxseed oil. Sunflower oil
has the requisite Omega 6 ingredients. Sulfasalazine and
methotrexate are important protocols for treating seronegative
spondylarthropathies. In addition, the lungs, heart and eyes
may be impacted by ankylosing spondylitis and related diseases.
For instance, Iritis may impact the eyes. Calcification of
the heart valves and electronic problems with the heart have
been noted. Decreased lung capacity is another important
resultant of ankylosing spondylitis.

The authors point out that Chronic Juvenile Arthritis stunts
growth. In addition, the SED RATE (sedimentation rate) and
rhematoid factor are the gold standard for blood tests to
detect arthritis. In my own experience, the MOST- micro-oxidative
stress test may be helpful in articulating the yeast component
as an aggravating factor in arthritic conditions.

The authors provide an important series of exercises which
may be helpful for arthritic patients. The physical therapy
training consists of moderate squatting, toe stand
(standing erect on your toes), moderate push-ups by pressing
the wall, back extensions by facing the floor and raising the
head, modified sit-ups, knee extension flexing, full range
motion employing light weights in torque motion, face flat on
the floor raising the back legs, the lunge stretch,
cross-over hips, placing one knee on the chair and standing
upright or erect, shoulder stretches and a host of others.
Dr. Nelson indicates that excess joint fluid is a sign of
inflammation. In addition, surgical intervention can be
helpful. For instance, an artificial joint may last 15-20 years.
Acupuncture helps to stimulate endomorphins and change blood
flow patterns. There is evidence that acupuncture relieves
arthritis, although there is less evidence for Chiropractic.
This book is worth the price. It provides important alternative
medicinal protocols for arthritis as well as classic physical
therapy exercises aimed at preserving joint mobility and
elasticity. I would supplement the exercises with Alpha
Lipoic Acid to enhance bodily elasticity. In my own experience,
Northern Polar magnets may be helpful if strategically placed.

exercise + diet = controlled arthritis...

It explains medically what is happening; how to understand the "medical team" that you will have; what treatments exist and their most common side-effects; and coping skills. Anyone who has recently been diagnosed with RA should definitely read this book. Anyone who is supporting a person with RA would also benefit from reading this book. I would highly recommend it.

Dr. Kelton's book has given me the tools to extend the lifespan of a less than optimal joint. My hip was keeping me awake at night. A specialist told me I'd be lucky to make it to 45 before I needed it replaced(I'm only 33)! After two months of following some of the exercises and stretches in this book, I've increased my range of motion, and decreased my pain.

Dr Kelton writes a very honest approach to arthritis. He has implemented this conservative approach to himself and his patients. Reducing weight and physical therapy should be the first line approach to arthritis before going for joint replacement, which is unfortunately recommendation of most of the orthopaedic physicians. Dr Kelton has shown in this book how we all can take care of our own degenerating joints. Kudos to him...

Dr. Kelton has produced a gem of a book which I hope will be widely circulated. All too often,in the treatment of arthritis, clinicians focus only on pain control or adaptive devices and fail to consider the remarkable benefits that appropriate exercise can provide.
This little book is written in clear, practical prose. The medical concepts are solid and well researched. Dr. Kelton's personal journey with arthritis makes the reading both compelling and enjoyable
The image of the "fit arthritic" provides a model by which we may inspire and inform our patients and to which many of us "ageing athletes" may ourselves aspire.

Reading (and rereading) this handbook inspires one to work at a proven and realistic way to not only be comfortable in your body, but also fit.

When all you want to do is feel better you'll consider all the possibilities, but it's so hard to figure out what is legitimate these days. Dr. Multz explains, dispells and validates a lot of different alternative therapies for arthritis. It's overall an educational reading, but will also be a great reference book to have in my library. I especially enjoyed discovering exactly -why- sex and alcohol are useful treatments - and appreciate knowing the details are coming from such a well-known specialist. Dr. Multz also seems to have an affinity for wine, as he has included a charming section on enjoying it through wine tastings and other fun ways. I recommend this book as a reference for anyone with arthritis and an enjoyable read as well.

This publication represents a thorough, serious discussion of Arthritis from a medical perspective and also provides insight into many herbal, mineral and homeopathic remedies. Humor is interspersed appropriately throughout.

A helpful, entertaining book
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-06-14
This highly improbable book title is fun, but it's also solid, scientifically verifiable information from a highly respected rheumatologist. But before you rush out to find a copy of the rheumatology Kama Sutra, let me tell you that you'll find even more information-yes, besides discussion of positions. Information about how sex and alcohol trigger a chemical reaction that reduces the pain, swelling, and inflammation of arthritis; information about over-the-counter vitamin supplements that are effective against arthritis; information about popular and absolutely worthless aids, like homeopathy, copper bracelets, magnets, MSM, and radon mines; information about dangerous therapies, like chapparel, rattlesnake meat, ayervedic products that contain lead, neck manipulation, suspect medications from south of border; and finally, some purported therapies that are just plain funny, like moon dust, radon water, red lights in a box, cider vinegar and honey, and a vibrating chair.
But then there are many more things that do work, and this is where Dr. Multz's professional expertise shines. He discussed why arthritis is more prevalent and in more forms in women than in men-it's the body chemicals, and the discussion is fascinating. The advice is adjust; avoid stress, because it makes arthritis worse; and seek treatment, because there are new things that really do work. Among the things that work are exercise (particularly aquatic exercise), meditation, and sex, which release prolactin. Surprisingly, ginger extract works to reduce pain. Not hugely, but it does work, and not incidentally, it works for the pain of fibromyalgia, a cousin of arthritis

Not long after winning a riding competition Jodie finds out she has rheumatoid arthritis. She will never be able to ride her beloved horse Monarch again. This book is set in the Adelaide Hills, Australia. Jodie has many challenges to over come one of them being surviving the Ash Wednesday bush fires and keeping Monarch out of danger. This book is great. Jodie is a very strong little girl. She has a horse named Monarch and she feels they are soul mates. They compete in jumping contest and win quite a few. One day her hands and knees started hurting her. The pain got worse and worse until one day she went to the doctor. The doctor told her she had rheumatoid arthritis. Jodie was crushed that she would never ride again. She is put in a wheelchair and has to learn how to live again. This book tells all of her adventures and how strong she is. I could not put it down. I would recommend anyone reads it.

This book is easy to read, even if you aren't in the medical field. I understood all of it. The illustrations definitely help, but Dr. Siegrist explains everything in plain English - with humor even!

The best aspect of this book for me is that, while I don't have arthritus - yet! - I found the information really valuable. I learned what causes arthritus as we age and what the available treatments are.

But a lot of the medecines are ones we use for other problems now, like Tylenol, Aleve, and Motrin. And I learned how they work and which ones can be taken at the same time and which ones interact with each other. It's made me much smarter about some of the over the counter medecines I use.

If you have arthritus, know someone who does, or just want to know more about the medecines used to treat it, this is a great, readable book.

Easily readable, this book is a wealth of information about bone health and joint maintenance. The author is an orthopedic surgeon and her dedication to helping patients manage their arthitis pain shows clearly in this book.

Dr Siegrist presents material that every individual who has experienced pain in a joint or bone can read thereby assessing their own need to take measures to improve their bone health.

Chapters on taking control of arthritis pain, for example, explain what is normal and why arthritis hurts. Descriptions of the many types of pain relievers are informative and the author's descriptions make medical facts easy to remember. Drawings, charts and photographs provide clear visuals of the concepts discussed thoughout the book.

Surgical alternatives are described in the book's appendix and provide information to help the reader to have a productive discussion with their othopedic surgeon or other health care provider.

I enjoyed the occasional humor which laces the book. The text is informative, not preachy. Dr Siegrist is on the reader's side. By the way, the book's illustrations by Christian Slade enhance both the book's readablity and understanding. Buy this book for yourself and then for your friends with achy joints. If you are a baby boomer get a jump on joint pain with "Know Your Bones."

Since I have also had knee surgery, I wanted to learn how I could still participate in sports without adding to the pain caused by this arthritis. As a 40 year old, I feel I'm way too young to be held back by arthritis. This book provided an easy read on a complicated subject. I was able to read how I could improve my way of life without giving up sports. In addition, the book gave me some ideas on preventive care and how changing my diet could help. Ms. Iannucci presented Dr. Horowitz's medical lingo in a down to earth fashion that will make you return to the book for reference again and again, even after you have initially read it. I recommend the book and have given it a deserved five star rating. Cudos on a job well done !

I have read numerous articles from this writer and found her to be very down to earth in a writing style that is easy to understand. She covers this subject in a lay person terminology so that the reader can appreciate the subject while learning.
