A Must Have for any family with a child with arthritisReview Date: 2001-06-14
Great Job Nicole. A great gift for any child or parent.Review Date: 1999-08-11
The list of resources in this book will help any parent or patient work out problems they may encounter living with this disease. As an author it's great to see, and use a book that takes JRA seriously from a child's point of view. I've resourced many books written by medical professionals that lecture patients on how to cope. But Nicole's Story goes the the heart of what all of us living, coping, and surviving with RA and JRA experience on a daily basis. And I plan to use it in all my support groups for kids and teen living with JRA.
Nicole's Story will help discard the myth that Arthritis is just "an old person's disease." Kids coping with JRA have now found a voice. I hope more people will take the time to listen. Bravo Nicole!

Excellent Book for those with arthritisReview Date: 2008-12-06
The idea that we can take charge of our disease and make informed decisions, and especially, improve our condition through strength training is an empowering concept. The book discusses everything from diet to drugs to alternative treatments, with detailed instructions and diagrams on stretching and strength exercises that can be done at home and really make a difference.
I showed this book to my rheumatologist, and he was quite impressed. I'd recommend it for anyone with arthritis.
No hype, just good, sound information.Review Date: 2002-11-03
Key to their program was strengthening exercises which have been shown in other studies as well as being extremely beneficial for arthritis patients. I am very pleased with books like these that offer sound treatments based on research. If you like these kind of books too and also suffer from back pain, I can recommend "The Multifidus Back Pain Solution" (available here at amazon.ca too) that is based on randomized controlled trials and involves only one exercise you do at home that strengthens your multifidus muscles found to be abnormal in many people with back pain. So start reading, start exercising, and start getting better!

Strong Men and Women Beat Arthritis by Dr. NelsonReview Date: 2003-10-30
conventional medicine protocols for arthritis. Dr. Nelson
mentions various Vit C dietary combinations utilizing
orange juice, strawberries or grapefruit to provide Vit. C.
Next, the authors cite important anti-inflammatory combos;
such as, Omega 3 fish oil and flaxseed oil. Sunflower oil
has the requisite Omega 6 ingredients. Sulfasalazine and
methotrexate are important protocols for treating seronegative
spondylarthropathies. In addition, the lungs, heart and eyes
may be impacted by ankylosing spondylitis and related diseases.
For instance, Iritis may impact the eyes. Calcification of
the heart valves and electronic problems with the heart have
been noted. Decreased lung capacity is another important
resultant of ankylosing spondylitis.
The authors point out that Chronic
Juvenile Arthritis stunts
growth. In addition, the SED RATE (sedimentation rate) and
rhematoid factor are the gold standard
for blood tests to
detect arthritis. In my own experience, the MOST- micro-oxidative
stress test may be helpful in articulating
the yeast component
as an aggravating factor in arthritic conditions.
The authors provide an important series of exercises
which
may be helpful for arthritic patients. The physical therapy
training consists of moderate squatting, toe stand
(standing
erect on your toes), moderate push-ups by pressing
the wall, back extensions by facing the floor and raising the
head,
modified sit-ups, knee extension flexing, full range
motion employing light weights in torque motion, face flat on
the
floor raising the back legs, the lunge stretch,
cross-over hips, placing one knee on the chair and standing
upright
or erect, shoulder stretches and a host of others.
Dr. Nelson indicates that excess joint fluid is a sign of
inflammation.
In addition, surgical intervention can be
helpful. For instance, an artificial joint may last 15-20 years.
Acupuncture
helps to stimulate endomorphins and change blood
flow patterns. There is evidence that acupuncture relieves
arthritis,
although there is less evidence for Chiropractic.
This book is worth the price. It provides important alternative
medicinal
protocols for arthritis as well as classic physical
therapy exercises aimed at preserving joint mobility and
elasticity.
I would supplement the exercises with Alpha
Lipoic Acid to enhance bodily elasticity. In my own experience,
Northern
Polar magnets may be helpful if strategically placed.

This little book is written in clear, practical prose. The medical concepts are solid and well researched. Dr. Kelton's personal journey with arthritis makes the reading both compelling and enjoyable
The image of the "fit arthritic" provides a model by which we may inspire and inform our patients and to which many of us "ageing athletes" may ourselves aspire.

How to Treat Arthritis with Sex and AlcoholReview Date: 2005-03-07
The book is easy to read, but yet very up-to-date on the latest treatments for those with Arthritis and their caregivers. A must read even for the busy rheumatologist needing a little lighter side of the profession.
A helpful, entertaining bookReview Date: 2005-06-14
But then there are many more things that do work, and this is where Dr. Multz's professional expertise shines. He discussed why arthritis is more prevalent and in more forms in women than in men-it's the body chemicals, and the discussion is fascinating. The advice is adjust; avoid stress, because it makes arthritis worse; and seek treatment, because there are new things that really do work. Among the things that work are exercise (particularly aquatic exercise), meditation, and sex, which release prolactin. Surprisingly, ginger extract works to reduce pain. Not hugely, but it does work, and not incidentally, it works for the pain of fibromyalgia, a cousin of arthritis

It Really "Makes Sense"!Review Date: 2006-02-28
Useful even if you *don't* have arthritusReview Date: 2006-02-28
The best aspect of this book for me is that, while I don't have arthritus - yet! - I found the information really valuable. I learned what causes arthritus as we age and what the available treatments are.
But a lot of the medecines are ones we use for other problems now, like Tylenol, Aleve, and Motrin. And I learned how they work and which ones can be taken at the same time and which ones interact with each other. It's made me much smarter about some of the over the counter medecines I use.
If you have arthritus, know someone who does, or just want to know more about the medecines used to treat it, this is a great, readable book.

Know Bones About It!Review Date: 2006-02-20
Dr Siegrist presents material that every individual who has experienced pain in a joint or bone can read thereby assessing their own need to take measures to improve their bone health.
Chapters on taking control of arthritis pain, for example, explain what is normal and why arthritis hurts. Descriptions of the many types of pain relievers are informative and the author's descriptions make medical facts easy to remember. Drawings, charts and photographs provide clear visuals of the concepts discussed thoughout the book.
Surgical alternatives are described in the book's appendix and provide information to help the reader to have a productive discussion with their othopedic surgeon or other health care provider.
I enjoyed the occasional humor which laces the book. The text is informative, not preachy. Dr Siegrist is on the reader's side. By the way, the book's illustrations by Christian Slade enhance both the book's readablity and understanding. Buy this book for yourself and then for your friends with achy joints. If you are a baby boomer get a jump on joint pain with "Know Your Bones."
