Nelson and Michael have put together an extraordinarily useful compilation of articles dealing with the causes and treatments of HIV wasting and the host of maladies that accompany it. The current acceptance of steroid, exercise and nutrition therapies to treat HIV can be directly attributed to the good work done by these activists.

I recommend this book wholeheartedly...it has profoundly effected my life for the better and is an important tool in my health care.

In 1988 I was told that I was seropositive, four years after Nelson Vergel learned of his status. For eight years I obediently followed doctors' orders, assuming with them that only prescriptions would be of help. After nearly dying in 1996, I discovered the website Medibolics, which evolved into this book. Following Vergel and Mooney's suggestions about supplementation and bodybuilding, in addition to the prescriptions, I am now again a healthy man, in fact probably in better shape than in my thirties before the infection. All lab counts are now within the recognized normal range, and there have been no opportunistic infections in five years. The authors' recommendations are thoroughly referenced for those who will read the original research for themselves. It was especially courageous for the authors to recognize the usefulness of anabolic steroids at a time when government policy has been severely restrictive. I remain profoundly grateful for Vergel and Mooney's work in a field that has been decisive for my own health. The information is relevant for the health of all, and serves as a concise starting point in a bewildering battery of literature.

THE BEST "how to live with HIV" book on the market

Mooney and Vergel are committed. They have spent thousands of hours researching lecturing and in the case of Vergel living with their subject. The book provides in laymens terms but backed with numerous scientific citations, how to use exercise, supplements and steroid agents to make living with HIV bearable.

The advent of HAART has meant a change in the life expectency of HIV patients. As a result the toxic effects of the HIV drugs are seeing many complications and side effects. This book discusses many of these and provides hands on suggestions for dealing with them.

Even if you just exercise you will feel better and you may just slow some of the side effects. You may even reverse some.

I have followed this book very casually since I bought it in July last year up until April 2001. I noticed that my "blood" results (other than Viral Load) were getting better and despite 'failing' a drug combination, my overall health was great. For the last 3 months I have followed some of the books recommendations RELIGIOUSLY. Despite having to change drugs due to resistance, my health and fitness has increased amazingly. And as an added benefit friends say I look the best I have in 10 years. My waist has gone from 38" to 31". My chest, arms and legs have all increased in size. My CD4's both in real and % terms are the highest in 4 years and all my other blood works are excellent. I am 40 years young. 2 weeks ago I completed a Vitality and Longevity Analysis and my Doctor advised that I had the Celular Health of a 26 year old.

I am so confident of the book and the authors that I bought my Doctor a copy.

An EXCEPTIONAL Read

Every single day I turn on the news, there's some new piece about steroids in sports. People are dying, children are crying, all that. But I always wondered why the news NEVER talked about the studies proving all of these nasty things really happen... after reading this book, I FINALLY understand. Because the media is full of crap! I really enjoyed this book and learned a ton from it. It is a bit outdated in that the IOC is now 4:1 and not 6:1 in T/E, but the points are all still valid. Highly recommended!

An Informative and Easy Read...

I really enjoyed reading Dunks Doubles & Doping - it provided an objective insight into the effects of steroids on Olympic and professional sports. Jendrick's perspective is not flatly really pro-steroids, but rather pro-legalization for the mass market (cosmetic use by adults), while still keeping them illegal for competition in sports, which he goes on to explain and justify rather nicely. There are many points in the book where you find yourself saying "Hmm, I didn't know that!" For me, perhaps the most disappointing thing I learned was confirmation from various sources that all or nearly all professional bodybuilders use steroids and/or HGH.

The Interview with Gregg Valentino (and his enormous arms) was definitely a fun read. I also found the Doping sections in Chapters 13/14 quite interesting. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about steroids, their effect on athletes, and on sports in general.

... this book nails the haters in the sack. Like a slam dunk or a quarterback sack, this book hits hard. Figured the hype was overated but its actually good stuff. Probably 4 1/2 stars is most accurate because I would have liked to see more stuff on the pro wrestlers, but for what its after it accomplishes. Definitely was educated by reading this.

Better than Game of Shadows

Game of Shadows revolved too much around Balco which, I suppose is why you'd read that book... but I was hoping for more as the hype was really, really astounding. This book talks about Balco, but also talks steroids, the real changes we're seeing in sports because of them, and some really good interviews that really made me feel as if I were talking to these people myself. The Valentino interview and piece is a MUST read, even if only to further engrain into ones own mind that Gregg Valentino is an idiot. Funny, but an idiot.

If you're into sports, buy this book. If you don't care about sports but want some facts about steroids, but this book. If you're a hippie-loving FOX News watching bias-moron, don't buy this book.

How Are Steroids Killing American Athletics?

Review Date: 2006-06-26
Nathan Jendrick takes the reader on a wide range of issues surrounding the use of steroids in sports and by the general public.

While his chapters seem just a bit smug - almost saying, "I am right because I am the one who has the real information" - the book has highs and lows based on who is being interviewed. And just for future reference, the spelling of the late Curt Hennig's name was not correct.

The top sections belong to Olympic champion Gary Hall - who feels that there should be a zero tolerance policy when athletes test positive for illegal drugs - to the final chapter on the potential of gene therapy as a means to take the "game" to the next scientific level.

A doctor who discusses a new psychological approach for athletes seemingly has a promotional pitch to explore and purchase his product.

The bodybuilder - featured in a recent cable special on steroids - wants to settle grudges he has against the industry. Who cares if some male bodybuilders earn extra cash by allegedly posing at parties for gay men. What does that issue have to do with the topic?

An attorney questions why professional athletes have seemingly avoided prosecution in steroid cases, while members of the general public have felt the wrath from the judicial system. But it is naive to assume that the power of the various leagues and organizations in this country will not do everything in its power to prevent their athletes being front-page fodder, being led away in handcuffs due to alleged drug transgressions.

The athletes outlined who feel remorse for their steroid use is laughable. If they weren't caught cheating I am sure they wouldn't have such tearful confessions.

While there is information that rarely is covered in major media sources, Jendrick never gets around to telling the reader, "How Steroids are Killing American Athletics."

Rather, it seems as if Jendrick leans to making the use of steroids legal for those age 21 and over, but reserving the right for governing athletic bodies to continue to make such usage illegal by its competitors.

Breathtaking Overview

Dan has created a must-read for anyone interested in the topic of doping in sport. It's easy to get caught up in the doping scandal of the moment, whether it's Marion Jones, or Roger Clemens, or Floyd Landis. Dan provides much-needed perspective, by giving us more than 100 years of doping history. With this perspective, we can see that no decade in the modern era lacks a doping scandal and no sport is immune from doping.

The book should be mandatory reading for every media talking head. Too often, we take the most recent doping story du jour, and attack the alleged doper as single-handedly corrupting our youth and destroying sport as we know it. Dan points out a bigger truth: doping is out there, every athlete has the opportunity to dope, and we fail to understand the problem if we focus on demonizing whatever athlete is currently connected with doping in the headlines.

In order for Dan to give us this kind of 50,000 foot view, he's had to keep each of his doping stories short and to the point. Often, I found this frustrating -- just as Dan got me hooked on one doping story, he'd move on to another. Many of these stories deserve their own books (and quite a few DO have their own books), but I think Dan's book serves a different purpose. It reminds us that these stories are NOT unique, that doping is now woven into the fabric of sport.

"Dope: A History..." is a well-balanced and informative book that brings clarity and perspective to an oft and all too easily misunderstood topic. Given the spate of doping scandals that consistently hit the news these days, it is timely and relevant. Daniel M. Rosen's writing is concise yet easy to follow, offering a wealth of historically grounded facts and interesting anecdotes. This book should be required reading for the professional - athlete, coach or official - as well as the lay person.

A must for any sports fan

Dope provides a complete and engaging look at the role doping has played in sports over the years. Until very recently, most governing organizations and governments actively encouraged doping amongst its athletes. As pressure mounted, these organizations served platitudes but turned a blind eye to the actions of its athletes and coaches thus tacitly endorsing the practice. Finally in recent years, we are seeing the beginning of a real culture shift. We have come a long way in just a short time.

Mr. Rosen covers all sports from Olympic to US professional sports providing detailed information on the BALCO scandal. There is just enough science to understand the narrative but the author is able to steer clear of sounding like a medical textbook.

Given the backdrop of the current Olympic Games and some of the stories surrounding mysterious changing passports and other suspicious activities this book could not be better timed.

Instead of leaving the reader suspicious of any athletic accomplishment, Mr. Rosen leaves us hopeful that a clean sport is quickly descending on most athletic fields.

This book is perfect! I give it a 10+ on a scale of 1-10. It contains all the information one will ever need on anabolic steroids. If you have a question, it's in this book. If your'e wondering how much to take and on what days, this book is for you. If your'e worried about side effects, then read this book! This book will provide you with drug profiles and pictures to avoid purchasing fakes. However, I recommend that everyone try steroid alternatives such as protein and creatine before experimenting with these drugs.

Unlocks the mystery of testing athletes for illicit drugs

Review Date: 2008-08-07
Unlocks the mystery of testing athletes for illicit drugs - why are these drugs a problem, how are they detected, what are the consequences? Caroline Hatton explains in understandable terms the very complex process of identifying chemicals in the laboratory which are used by athletes to make their bodies stronger, faster and more enduring under the intense pressure of the Olympic Games. She provides a personal look at the doctors and researchers working in the labs to uncover this wide reaching and wide spread deception. Along the way, she also addresses important related topics, including educational path to these laboratory jobs, why athletes use drugs in competition, and the increasing problem of designer drugs.

This book is a wonderful resource for middle to high school students, and even adults. The misappropriation of ancient and modern medicine (and quickly evolving designer drugs) in the desire to be acknowledged as the best in the world is a surprisingly engrossing topic. A great reference for the library, this topic will be of lasting interest for years after the Olympics are over.

Finally, someone who truly reviews medical data on anabolics

Review Date: 2009-01-23
Along with Michael Mooney, I am the co-author of the book "Built to Survive: a comprehensive guide to the medical use of anabolic therapies, nutrition and exercise for HIV+ men and women." I am very happy to see that Dr Scally spent months of work researching the effects of anabolics on the Hypothalamic Pituitary Testicular Axis (HPTA)and how these compounds can cause long term hypogonadism (low testosterone) if not used properly.
Most doctors in clinical practice are not trained on how to avoid hypogonadism after anabolic steroid use for medical and non medical purposes. We have used them with great results them for HIV wasting for many years using good physician monitoring. Hopefully, this book will make it possible for clinicians to learn the main issues surrounding the proper use of these life-saving compounds.

I am so glad that Dr Scally wrote a simple explanation on a protocol that may help reset our body's own hormonal axis to prevent the debilitating effects of "post-steroid crashing." There are no published data on the subject, so this book is groundbreaking.

Dr Scally reviews data on the use of anabolic steroids for the following medical uses:

- To treat wasting syndrome related to the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV),
- To treat strength and weight loss associated with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Chronic Kidney Disease/Hemodialysis
- To counteract osteoporosis and the negative effects of glucocorticoids on bone density and lean body mass,
- To reverse and prevent the age-related loss of lean body mass (Sarcopenia.)

For physicians and lay people who love to read easy-to-understand clinical information, this book is for you. Every man using testosterone or anabolic steroids should do their research to avoid the most common and untreated side effect caused with the use of these compounds. When used correctly with solid research data and monitoring, anabolics can be great to improve quality of life and lean tissue in people suffering from many debilitating conditions. However, most of the benefits disappear after their use is stopped and quality of life tends to worsen unless an effective HPTA reset protocol is used. This book explains such approach.

I think I read this book in just one sitting. It's long enough to get enough detail, but short enough to not get bored.

Having not watched that much of the original gladiators I didn't know Nitro all that well. I applaud him for coming back and describing in harrowing detail how he was essentially addicted to steroids. The lengths he would go, the pain he would suffer, and to keep going back for more.

You would think you may think less of Dan Clark after reading this book, but really the opposite is true, he allows you into his mind, what he was thinking, his mistakes, all in the hopes of getting the dangers of steroids out there. This isn't a book that he wrote easily and to make money, a lot of heart went into it.

The book is basically the authors struggle with steroid abuse and his broken families issues. After reading this book, I can truly see how hard it is to break the steroid abuse once you start using them.

One of the best books that I have ever read.

Nitro was my favorite gladiator so I was definitely eager to read this book. It lived up to all of my expectations. I could not put it down and read it in about two hours. Even though I am a huge fan, this book was so engrossing that even non-fans can get into it. His story is so intense and sad at times and reveals a reality that unfortunately we sometimes never get to see until it is too late. His purpose was not to talk about others but to talk about his own demons. This book is a tell-all ...not about others but of himself. It is a definite must -read!!

I was familiar with the TV show and watched it back in the early 90s. What compelled me to read this was I overheard Dan being interviewed on a local TV show. I don't usually read non-fiction but read this book in 2 short sittings (couldn't put it down). Dan's story is filled with tragedy, sadness, competition, success, despair and triumph. This book also opens ones eyes to effects of steroids, sports competition and what goes on in Hollywood.

I grew up around 'American Gladiators', but was never a worshipper of the show. As a fan of autobiographies and non-fiction, I figured I'd give this one a shot anyway. Dan Clark 'aka Nitro' was easily the most famous of the original American Gladiators, and is the face I've always associated with the show.

Much of the book describes Clarks ongoing battle with steroid addiction. The constant desire to be bigger and harder than his teammates and competition. There is a constant theme of failure in the book as well. Be it failing to stay away from steroids, constant family drama, romantic escapades or going from one dead end path towards fame to another. Some of the potentially larger themes are kind of left unresolved. Where is his relationship with his son now? Or his mother?

The book reads very easily. I found it very similar to 'Hawk' by Tony Hawk. Just a blue collar guy telling his life story in plain English. The surprise to me was the very adult language and sexual content. Not a knock on the book, I just expected a generic tale of redemption or finding a higher power. It doesn't happen here. Clark talks about falling for drug addiction as late as 2007. After investing a few hours in reading his story, I do feel sympathy for him. I hope he's kicked his habit after all.

EDIT

I should mention that my subject 'limited audience' refers to the fact that this book must be a much more powerful read for men and women who struggle with body image and with competition/competitive sports, even with steroid addiction. I have never been a part of competitive sports, so relating to the need for steroids was difficult for me to relate to at first. In the course of the book however, Clark really puts the reader in his shoes, and I found myself sympathetic with Clark and his repeated reliance on drugs, even as someone who has not had this particular struggle in my own life. It is an 'everyman' story with themes that everyone can find a powerful meaning within.
