I would like everyone in my family to have and read this book. I feel Renee's calm and her power as I read the power packed pages she has handed us on a "silver Platter". A must have for anyone who wishes to become very well informed about food, our planet, giving and receiving, interactions on so many levels. I expect this book to be so worn and used, that when I am gone from this world, anyone going through my home would know to grab it and treasure it as I do. I find myself at a loss of words to express my feelings, but trying, I would say I am inspired, uplifted, excited, and grateful. I feel I have a PHD sitting next to me having a warm and easy experience of learning. Spelt is NOT gluten-free!

Review Date: 2008-04-07
The description of this book explains that the author writes with a "nod" toward gluten-free living. In one way, this is true. Many folks with gluten issues also have dairy issues, and this book cleanly sidesteps all dairy altogether, while providing workable recipes that sound like they would still taste good (especially the desserts, which sound delightful, although I haven't tried them yet). My big problem with the recipes in general is that she lists spelt as a gluten-free alternative. WRONG! Spelt contains gluten, and its use is an entirely inappropriate recommendation to individuals who are avoiding gluten. That being said, most experienced gluten-avoiders will know how to modify the few gluten-containing recipes (or skip them altogether), but for newbies, I cringe to think of the damage that could be caused.

Too much seaweed, ume, and soy

I expected this book to provide me with useful recipes and an overall healthy philosophy on food. There was some of what I expected, but far too many 'exotic' foods expected for every recipe, so that none of them looked interesting enough to try. I keep whole grains, fresh produce and herbs, and lots of basics in my pantry. What seemed to distinguish almost all of the recipes in the book were odd ingredients -- one-hit wonders, as it were -- that are expensive and ridiculous to keep around because I'll only use them once and the jar will take up refrigerator space. I didn't find it helpful, and I won't keep it.

This is a great book; I've had it for years and recently re-read it. The insights into a parents emotions and feelings are spot-on; this is obviously written by someone who understands emotions in the context of food allergies. Even after living with this problem for 4+ years, I got a lot from rereading this book..

When I found out my son had severe peanut & tree nut allergies my life completely changed. I love the way this book was written. It has provided the support I have been looking for, for the last year. I have ordered more copies for family to read as well. Food allergies change your life, anaphalaxis is something that is hard to talk about, and accept. The author did a great job just giving the reader support, and making me feel like I am not alone....

i gave this book to my daughter's daycare. it's a quick read and gives a good overview of food allergies, how to manage food avoidance (with a chapter dedicated daycare/preschool environments), how to recognize a reaction, and how to respond to a reaction. it's concise and to the point, not bogged down with a lot of extraneous stats and info.

This book made me anxious and distraught about my daughter's condition with allergies. The author used many dark examples of negative allergic reactions. What an eye opener to all of the things that can happen to your child! However, I felt much of the advice and guidance was lost when the extreme consequences were used for every case example. One of the first chapters did offer some consolence that I was not alone - something that I appreciated reading. It is hard to remember that when you see non-allergic toddlers that can try a bite of any food that they want.

At last some real help and straight talk.

Her literary manner and style generates confidence and comfort with her conclusions. She finally opened our eyes to some real solutions to a situation, which, until I read her consise, yet complete book, had eluded us for many months. She knows so well those things that are so important to us all and deserves our attention, support and praise. Thank you for everything, Ms Collins.

This book has certainly opened our eyes as to what allergens can exist that one would never dream were in their home. It is so totally awesome and explicit with explainations. It's a must read for anybody who has known allergies or even suspects possible allergies. It will surprise you what can be causing your health issues. The culprit may be allergens in your home, in your yard, in your vehicle.

Wonderful resource for some allergies -- but not others

"My House Is Killing Me!" is a wonderful book with lots of great information for people who are allergic to mold, mildew, and dust mites.

Contrary to the broadly worded title, this book contains relatively little information for people who are allergic to tree pollen, grass pollen, weed pollen, pet dander, and chemicals (i.e., chemical sensitivity). Unfortunately, I'm allergic to everthing on the second list and nothing on the first list. So, most of this book wasn't very helpful for me.

However, if dust mites, mold, or mildew trigger your allergies, you will find this book quite helpful. Each chapter addresses one room and ends with a list summarizing what you can do to improve that room. The book contains numerous stories about houses triggered allergies of these sorts, why, and what can be done about it -- the presentation of these stories was too mellodramatic for my tastes, but the advice appears to be sound and well considered.

I got this book for our mildew issues. Our house doesn't breath very well. So far the advice has been good (we breath much better now for it), except I find the chapter on pets very disappointing and limited. The only advice the author really offers on dealing with pet allergies is to get rid of the pets. She is obviously not an animal person as she appears to describe pets as dirty (her most experience is talking about her mothers' ill-trained dogs). A lot of my friends who have allergies and pets would toss this book in the trash because of this as they've learned to live with their pets and fantastically manage their allergies at the same time. There's a lot of things you can do to keep pets even when you have allergies (switch pet foods, litters, shampoos, drink apple vinegar cider, vacuum more regularly, groom regularly, etc).

My daughters have a range of chronic respiratory issues to simple allergies. This book helped me realize what I can do for them and it has made a difference. The main point is to find the source of the allergen before purchasing solutions. We thought our air purifier and humidifier were great machines to help with cleansing and adding moisture to the indoor air. Boy, were we wrong. We may have actually been spewing out mold particles and distributing dust mite fecal material into the air. The first part of the book was hard to read because it shows the common causes of allergies - dust mites and other little creatures that may be in your pillow at this moment. The book made suggestions from simple to the complex. Some of our changes were simple like using a wet mop on our floors, adding dust-mite-proof pillow cases, and running stuffed animals through the dryer. Fortunately, we didn't have to go to the extreme to get some relief and my daughters are coughing and sneezing much, much less. This book gives you some tools to help you become an indoor air detective in your home or at least, where to begin to get help.

EXCELLENT GUIDE

I have been using homeopathic remedies for some time, but this book opens up my understanding more on why, how much, what, and when. I have had phenomenal success using homeopathic remedies and would advise everyone interested in keeping dangerous drugs out of their bodies or those of their family's should at least read up on the subject, and this is one of the books to start with!

I am always surprised when people say to me "that stuff is quackery, or you've been conned", yet they will go to their doctor and get a drug with deadly side-effects and take it! If only they knew that not all the prescriptions doctors give out have been tested - which is why a doctor will say to them "we'll try this one and if it doesn't work, we'll try something else!" And because it is a doctor who says it, people are gullible to believe that drug will not hurt them!

Get the book, READ IT, and then ask yourself is it worth a try? You can't hurt yourself with it, and it won't cost a fortune to buy it!

I recently opened a 'healing products' store in an Interstate Super Flea Market mall, and retail a branded homeopathic line of remedies. Not being a doctor, but making referrals to homeopathic professionals, this book was exactly what I needed to relate homeopathic remedies to visitors to my new store and provide them with simple comprehensive understandable information useful for adults and children, alike.

I believe the book to be a good bridge between patient and professional, alike, to understand specifics and the proper use of these wonderful medications anytime one is visiting or calling a professional practitioner.

I highly recomend it to any lay person, like myself, who is interested in learning about homeopathics with or without the help of a homepathics professional. For anyone with serious illiness, especially chronic sufferers of pain and acute disease, I highly recommend that one should always work with a trusted professional, and I strongly recommend browsing this book prior to selecting a homeopathic professional, and keeping it handy throughout any conversations and use of prescribed remedies.

After reading the book and answering a few customer questions today, I am so pleased that I am ordering additional copies from Amazon.com to make the book immediately available to my own customers who request it.

Dr. Shalts has produced an impressive book, one that could help many families who are seeking alternatives to medication for their child's unique set of issues. This is an enormously helpful, easy to read, engaging book on homeopathy for kids, explaining what homeopathy is and helping parents to find the treatment that is right for their child.

I highly recommend this to any parent of a child who is seeking answers for problematic behaviors and physical conditions, and wants to explore homeopathy.

I'm glad I got this from the library before buying it. This has very little self-help in it. There are other books with more complete and more easily searched self-help sections.
This book might be good if you need to be convinced about the usefulness and benefits of homeopathy for your family, but I'm past that point and got very annoyed at being cautioned on about every other page that I need to work with a trained homeopath and could not possibly do or comprehend more than simple acute care by myself. It was written on behalf of the American Institute of Homeopathy so maybe that explains something. He also cautions ominously against polypharmacy, but never gave any reason or proof why this should be so bad.

This book is full of solid information and seems to come from a very balanced perspective. The book is slim, probably because it gets right to the point and isn't full of "fluff" chapters that I see in so many dog books. It was a real eye-opener for me, and it helped me figure out my dog's allergies when my vet had done all she could. In fact, I was so impressed with this book that I bought copies for all of my dog owner friends for Christmas.

I used Dr. Plechner as a vet several years ago when my Aussie mix was throwing up every morning. He gave me the book, which explained a lot, and after a while on the duck and sweet potato dog food (I joked about her gourmet meals costing more than mine), she improved. Great vet, and I learned a tremendous amount about not only what to feed -- or avoid feeding - any of my dogs, but also about the irresponsible breeding practices which cause the problem... and how to test for the genetic health of an animal before I adopt. Excellent resource.

As a lifelong asthma sufferer and an Ehlers-Danlos Patient, I was told my prognosis was poor. The drugs were destroying my body and yet were no longer relieving the problems. When my daughter starting suffering herself, I found this book...and now our whole approach to healing is thru diet and supplementation. There is significant evidence that the root cause of many, if not most, cases of asthma (and many allergies as well) is deficiency of magnesium. This fact is discussed in detail by Dr. Carolyn Dean in her excellent book The Miracle of Magnesium. Dr. Dean recommends 600 mg of supplemental magnesium daily. People with asthma who follow Dr. Dean's advice about daily magnesium supplementation often improve dramatically even if they have continued to struggle with asthma under other treatments which omit magnesium supplementation. If you are suffering from asthma please read Dr. Dean's excellent book and follow her advice regarding daily magnesium supplementation. It may well be the most important thing you will ever due to relieve this terrible ailment. By the way, although a variety of magnesium supplements are available, and beneficial, chelated magnesium -- which is readily available in most health food stores -- is the most effective.

I read Richard Firsheins book with much interest. Yes, it is well written and contains factual information but I found my asthma was as bad after reading it as it was before. The book did little to improve my condition - it did not reverse it.

In all my search- only one book solved my problem- it is called Asthma Free naturally by Patrick McKeown and it does what it says it will do. It teaches readers how to correct their overbreathing based on the work of Russian respiratory professor Konstantin Buteyko. This book is a real gem and should be made mandatory reading for all asthmatics.

Very helpful book. Try it.

This book has helped me to control my asthma.

I've had asthma for over 20 years. After my most recent and scariest episode, I decided I had to do something about it. After reading this book and applying some of the methods like deep breathing and vitamin supplements, I've been able to limit the frequency and severity of attacks.

My asthma isn't "Reversed", but it does seem much more manageable. And some of the symptoms that I thought were asthma related all of these years were actually because of breathing incorrectly. That was an amazing change I saw in the first week.

The author is obviously not a new age, everything must be natural, quack. He combines current medical techniques, breathing techniques, and diet and excercise into a very comprehensive plan. He also recommends discussing this plan with your doctor.

I doubt this book will Reverse your asthma, but it should definitely help control it. I highly recommend it.

Wrong theory?

Review Date: 2005-12-04
Although I greatly admire Dr. Firschein for his initiative, my experience with asthma has taught me to be skeptical of the theory of correcting breathing presented in the book. If you consider how a normal person takes a natural deep breath you will see that the chest is vigorously expanded and the upper abdomen is drawn in and upward (Gray's Anatomy). It therefore seems highly arguable that an asthmatic simply "gets stuck" in his frantic effort to take a deep inspiration, and that the upward straining of the shoulders so typical of an attack is not pathological and the deep breath should be taught by correctly learning from a healthy breather in all details. Also, a healthy breather tends to restrict the inflow of air during the deep inspiration with his lips and/teeth.
If taking a deep breath is regarded as a distinct maneuver (like a yawn or sigh), then it is just a case of an asthmatic failing to do it. It is not a question of his breathing wrongly by being misguided. Therefore, diaphragmatic breathing as advocated in the book should be treated as something of a different kind. I'd never heard of 'Candida Overgrowth' until a friend let me read her copy of this book. I can't believe I found the answers to all the wierd physical and mental issues I've been dealing with (you know the ones - doc says it's all in your head...). I had breast cancer in 1999-2000 and was on weeks of STRONG IV antibiotics - every time they touched me I got an infection - the port site, surgery sites, even a PICC line. This after a childhood of amoxicillin before every dental visit due to a heart murmur. Not real hard to see where my yeast overgrowth came from. What angers me is that it was doctor-caused, then they had no idea why I couldn't focus, had mental fogginess, depression, weight gain for no reason that I couldn't lose again, and a slew of other annoying digestive issues. The inability to focus and mental fog cost me a really good-paying job. All I did to cause this was eat the "All-American" diet most people I know eat and follow my doctors instructions. Well, not gonna happen anymore. I'm buying my own copy of this book and my whole family is ready to try it. My husband has asthma and allergies, my daughter can't focus and was called unorganized and irresponsible at school - they're ready for a change too. The advantage I have over alot of people reading these reviews is that I know this works from trying it. Maybe not for everyone, we're all different, but at least give it a shot. It's hard to change how you eat - but then, isn't everything hard when it's new? It's worth it.

Saved my life...

This book and it's companion cookbook literally saved my life, after years of getting no help ~ or getting sicker ~ from the established "medical profession." I changed my diet and in three days the pain disappeared, and a week later I tossed away my cane and bounded up the stairs. I couldn't believe it, it was a miracle. I still can't believe it; all because of changing the foods I ate.

Now, years later, when I go off the no-sugar, no yeast diet, the pain and stiffness and depression returns and I have to stop and think... ahhh, I've been eating sugar = candida yeast infection! So back I go and all is well. This change in eating habits has saved untold thousands of people like me from suffering and pain and "given us our lives back." Why don't doctors tell us? I will never understand this.

How did I hear about this book & the problem of candida yeast infection? Three friends, from different parts of the country, told me about it, and I visited a nutritionist who backed up everything Dr. Crook says in the book. Et Voila! I was cured.

It is very hard at times not to feel great bitterness towards the "regular doctors" who wasted my time and money, and left me suffering for so many years, yet who have little or no training in basic nutrition.

It is not this way in Europe; here they seem to know only how to prescribe surgery or useless medications, some of which made me sicker, but I have to continue to remind myself that this is the training of the AMA. I hope things change, and soon.

In the meantime, a note of importance:

I developed the initial candida yeast infection was drinking "100% pure fruit juice." I drank it all day or night long, for three years, sitting in front of my computer working. I was a computer programmer at the time. Turns out any bottled fruit juice turns into fructose sugar during processing, and I was making myself sick by believing that the "100% pure juice" was healthy for me. How wrong that was. That's how I got sick.

After going on the anti-candida yeast diet for a few months (during which I lost 40 lbs as well! The fat just melted off me), all was well. Then I started drinking cartons of orange juice purchased from the grocery store. Joint pain, exhaustion and suffering again! I was told by a woman shopping alongside of me that processed orange juice was causing my returning joint pain, and she was right. She knew because she had been through the same thing. She was an angel from above! Now I only drink juice that is fresh squeezed, and stick to the rest of the diet, and I have no more problems whatsoever. (I have problems only when I go off).

I have recommended this book to many, many people and all have received a great deal of relief. If only I had been told about it sooner, it would have saved me three years of exhaustion, pain, suffering & immobility. It even hurt to breath some days, and doctors did not help at all. I tried everything.

The diet is simple: no sugar, no dairy, no yeast, no wheat, only organic foods and water to drink. It's not "easy" at first, but mayonnaise, eggs and chicken are allowed, spices, curries, rice syrup (really sweet), fresh corn tacos or chips take the place of many kinds of foods. Health food stores have lots of "gluten and dairy free foods, so you will shop there to your heart's content. Plus I had immediate results within three to seven days.

This diet was like putting "Miracle Grow" on roses with yellowed & blackened leaves half dead from lack of proper nutrients, and seeing green and healthy results, literally overnight! I still can hardly believe it. After four months, people said it was as if I was twenty years younger, and they were right!

Thank you, Dr. Crook! You have saved my life.

I recommend this book and it's change in diet with acupressure massage, and a bit of prayer and meditation. With Grace on our side, all will be well.

After suffering for many months, years, from various yeast related issues I purchased this book. My mother had used this diet on me as a child for re-occurring yeast infections and it helped. I am sad to say I had this book for a good 6 months before I did anything because I was afraid to give up so much. Unfortunetly for me, things got much worse before better and it was actually my MEDICAL doctor that diagnosed me with candida. Just weeks prior I had taken my 18th antibiotic in 1 1/2 years. Shortly after I finished it I got a severe sore throat and mouth pain. It literally felt as if I was swallowing glass and then my mouth felt as if it were closing. One look in my mouth and throat and I was diagnosed with SEVERE thrush of the mouth and throat. I am now on antifungal treatment and 1 week into my first 2 weeks on this diet. I am still very sick but much better than before AND I have lost 6 pounds. Thank you for writing this book and thank God for doctors who actually acknowledge that this is a REAL issue!

This book has alot of good information to do with elimination diets/antibiotic use and the development of candida albicans problems that cause food allergies. It is an excellent book to read and follow if you suffer from allergies or asthma.

This book has saved my life! Since moving to Austin, Texas (allergy capital of the world)from Chicago not only have my allergies and asthma gotten extremely bad, but I've also been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, chronic sinus infections, panic disorder, agoraphobia and chronic fatigue. I have gone off of my antihistamines, Flonase, antidepressants, birth control pills and lowered my Flovent dosage by 75%! Tapering off that while I start Intal again. I can't tell you how this has saved my life! You do the program to the tee - you'll feel better in days. Within one week I felt like a million bucks! It's not easy, but to feel this good is really worth it! To top it off, I lost 8 pounds in two weeks (now 126)! Please get this book for people that are suffering. A lot of people are getting this for Christmas this year!

Good, good

I previously purchased this book, used it successfully, and then lent it(much marked up) to someone (don't remember who)and now I need it again. I didn't follow the program 100%, but it did work. I was on allergy shots, and had asthma symptoms at certain times of the year depending on what was blooming. This book worked for me, and I have tried a lot of them.

Missing the point

Another book that I felt had very little to offer that was not already out there. For the past fifteen years, I coughed every morning and night with disrupted sleeping and resulting fatigue. It was a breathing method called Buteyko that changed this.

That is whre this book falls - it does not explore overbreathing which is a significant part of asthma. If you have allergies or asthma- look at Buteyko. Many books exist that offer self help. These are the only ones I feel will help asthma.

My point is unless a book addresses breathing volume, it will never solve asthma.

Do your own research.

The book is based on changing your eating habits to improve asthma. It has alot of good information on allergies, food intolerance, and asthma, as well as allergy tests. It also talks about asthma medications and their side effects, and has a chapter on nutritional supplements. The author used to work for Atkins and is his philosophies are less extreme than Atkins but he does incorperate alot of meat into his program. His basic program is to identify food sensitivities, and avoid foods that you are sensitive to, as well as things that contribute to candidiasis and leaky gut. If you aren't ready to make big changes in your diet you may be wasting your money. The diet cuts out sugar and fruit for a limited time, and he advises you to leave the sugar out. One of the issues in this book is it is really based around identifying your food intolerances. He recommends tests which will run you $400 and up. These are not often covered by insurance. I did take the test and found out my intolerances. He also states you can do an elimination diet if you can't afford the tests but it sounds very confusing and hard to implement. While he recommends most meats, much research shows that antiinflammatory diets work best with asthma, as well as vegan diets, which would contridict this method. I'm not a vegetarian but I have tried to keep my meat consumption down based on my own research and I have tried to stay on an antiinflammatory diet that is more plant based. Also, his recommendation for fish oil, while great, is contridicted in alot of lietrature as it can make symptoms worse for some asthmatics. So do your own research on fish oil and see if it gives you any problems if you do implement this part of his program.
I think his book is good in the sense that it focuses on positive diet changes and would be beneficial to someone who is eating alot of junk food and it may well help their asthma. It also is a decent reference book for allergy tests, medications, and supplements. If someone is on a healthy diet and takes good care of their health and is savy to nutrition it may not be a big help. Also not recommended for vegetarians, except that the tests may uncover food allergies if you are willing to pay for them. To some it may be worth a try, it does have some good information.

I truly enjoyed this book. Although folks may think this book is only geared towards young children with allergies, there's a lot in it for us adults too! As a young woman recovering from cancer, my system has become quite "sensitive" to certain ingredients. Trying to eat becomes a chore sometimes especially when trying to avoid certain things. THis book refeshed my passion to make good, creative meals that I could enjoy and not worry about side effects after. Its simple, yet informative using ingredients you can find easily. Its an A+ for me, I can't wait to see what else she has to offer. Keep it coming!

My daughter just started the specific carbohydrate diet and we had been brainstorming on different, yet appetizing foods to work with, especially in the dessert department. When I purchased this book and experimented with the recipes we were both extremely happy with the end results. The recipes make it easy to create mouth watering, delicious and creative meals! I had used several of the recipes for Thanksgiving and family members were intrigued and I will say, very surprised, that the taste of the food was "normal"; which I think is a major misconception with this diet. Instead of focusing on the "cannot haves" we focus on the "can haves"! Thank you so much for making the transition into SCD land easier! :)

The photos in this book are exceptional. The recipes are delicious. This cookbook is a must for anyone who wishes to augment their SCD cooking library. The Specific Carbohydrate Diet has completely healed me of Crohn's Disease. I have been free of disease for over 5 years and am taking no prescription medications, all thanks to this diet. This diet is the only way to control my chronic diarrhea.

Healing Foods is a helpful adjunct for a specific carbohydrate diet recipe collection. The photography is especially appealing. I would suggest that the author make a few changes to a possible next edition; a) include a "what to order in a restaurant" section, b) find a more successful bread recipe to accommodate sandwiches (those in the book are either too sweet, or break apart and can't be used as sliced bread, and c)proof the text more carefully as there are some errors. Finally, and important, would be a section listing sources for internet or phone orders for hard to find, organic, and vitamin orders. In summary, buy this book, as it's worth the money.

This is a great book!

I am sort of collecting SCD books now! I have really been enjoying this book. There are many great, well-thought out, tested, recipes. There are comments and how-to's with recipes, which I appreciate. The recipes do not call for the dried curd cottage cheese which is impossible to obtain in Northern California--so I am appreciating that. There is a website mentioned in the book which I have checked out--it is just getting going it seems.
Oh, there are also beautiful pictures in this book. This book is really worth the price--I highly recommend it.
