A Great Resource for Doctors and PatientsReview Date: 2008-09-07
This problem goes "under the radar" for doctors and patients, and this book is a handy tool to help everyone understand latex allergy.
We keep a copy in our office to loan to patients who are latex allergic.
Surprisingly Good!Review Date: 2006-02-11
The cover wasnt to appealing, but i took the time to read the information on it and decided to give it a shot, considering its the author's life story of her strugle with an alergic reaction to latex, and the author i would like to mention, was a pharmasist.
When i read the book, honestly i had a hard time putting it down. The story, her life was so much like mine. Same strugles with this alergic reaction to latex... it's hard. I'm tellin you, if you have or know someone that is alergic to latex... buy and read this book. It made me feel SO much better knowing I am not the only one who has struggled with this.
I wrote the author thanking her... so yes, i was impressed!

Help for the Celiac SuffererReview Date: 2004-10-08
This cookbook has over 100 delicious recipes and other information that would be helpful to someone trying to cook for a celiac (like where to find certain products). The instructions are easy to follow. There is a large section on baking, which seems to be a real hurdle for anyone allergic to wheat. The Apple Muffins and 10 minute cake doughnuts taste great, and I would never know that they were wheat and gluten free from the taste. The pizza dough is very good, and the no flour peanut butter chocolate chip cookies can only be made when people are coming over or I eat the entire batch!
There are plenty of healthy options, like the stuffed bell peppers and baked salmon in dill, but fresh fruits, meat and veggies are not likely to have wheat or gluten problems -- it is the treats that are impossible to the celiac.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone who knows or is someone who suffers from celiac disease. I own several other cookbooks, but no other ones covering celiac. This one isn't laden with step-by-step pictures (there are about 40 pictures), but the content is super. There are tips throughout and a glossary that will help you if you are a novice, though a practiced cook won't find lots of interference in using the recipes.

An Accesible Gudie to Understanding and Relieving AllergiesReview Date: 2003-12-02
This book includes a table of contents and index, so it's great for reference. It begins with a clear explanation of what causes allergies. I found it informative, for instance, that taking allergy medicine after symptoms have started doesn't do much, you have to take medication before you start getting that stuffy nose and itchy eyes.
Also included are lists of grasses, trees and weeds that produce pollens, and the regions they're found in. There are some allergens that are so similar to others that the body mistakes them for the thing you're allergic to and reacts, so you should avoid certain fruits and vegetables if you happen to be allergic to certain pollens (who knew?)
WHAT'S IN THE AIR? explains pet allergies (did you know a child can develop an allergy to cats just by going to school with someone who has a cat at home?). There's a section for parents on children and allergies, tips for allergies on the job, on airplanes (never use those plane pillows) and abroad. You can have no symptoms on your first visit to a place, and return a year later and have an allergic reaction to local allergens because allergies take time to develop.
There are details of specific drugs and allergy shots, what they do and how effective they are. The part I found most helpful, however, was the information on way to allergy proof your home, including tips on what to look for when buying air filters, humidifiers and vacuum cleaners.
Author Gillian Shepherd is a well-established allergy and immunology specialist, and the co-author, Marian Betancourt, has had a great deal of experience in writing nonfiction in a readable format so this book isn't daunting and technical. It also includes appendices on additional resources and places to buy allergy related products.

Also, the author doesn't just throw some "ice cream" recipes at you and shout GO. There are three entire chapters dedicated to introducing the reader to ingredients, equipment, and techniques. These chapters are so incredibly thorough with tips, explanations, and checklists, that I couldn't even begin to summarize them!
To note, the Ice Dream Cookbook also focuses on low glycemic, using a combination of agave nectar and stevia in most of the "ice cream" recipes. As best as I can tell, this is also a soy-free cookbook; the "ice creams" are primarily coconut milk or nut-based. All of the recipes are vegan-friendly, but I would like to note that there are choices given, such as honey or agave and gelatin or agar agar.
