This book is wonderful, even if you get it just to look at the pictures. I'm new to the world of vegan baking, and I bought this along with Isa's 2 other cookbooks. I like that they give you useful information along with the recipes. I've made 2 cupcakes so far, I wasnt blown away by either one, but I plan to try some of the more interesting ones in here. You do need a lot of ingredients that the average baker doesnt normally have on hand, but I'm slowly stocking up so I can take over the world with my cupcakes!

A great way to introduce veganism to family

I've had this book for awhile, but I feel it's time to finally review it. This cookbook is truly the perfect way to show family and friends that being vegan isn't a big deal--no really. I'm the only vegan in my family, but I can't wait to knock everyone's socks off at Christmas with these delicious recipes (I'm thinking blueberry lemon creme cake for the adults, and 'decorate-it-yourself' banana split cupcakes for the younguns). Please buy this book. I love exotic vegan cooking as much as the next person, but I don't have to funds to acquire the really weird ingredients. This book has those exotic ingredients, but also simple recipes with common ingredients. I'm hoping this book will propel me to official baker of the extended family, making each gathering a little less cruel!

Another great vegan staple

I've been a vegan since 1989 (and a vegetarian since 1984) and didn't give much thought to baking or sweets because I didn't know how to get around dairy and especially eggs in baking. Cupcakes were the last thing I ever thought I would bake. The recipes are amazing and what I love the best is that the cupcakes don't fall apart. I baked 2 dozen cupcakes recently for my niece's birthday party and people couldn't believe that they were vegan.....

Highly, highly recommended!!!!

I am new to eating gluten-free and this book was given to me as a gift along with a few other books. This was by far the best book. The recipes are great. She also gives great information about how gluten-free cooking works in general so you can look at how to convert your own favorite recipes. I think this is a great first book for those who just started eating gluten-free.

Gluten-Free Baking Classics by Annalise G. Roberts is a real treasure for celiacs. Gluten-free food, at best, can be boring and not very tasty, but this cookbook makes baking delightful. None of the recipes I've tried has failed and even my non-celiac friends and family can't believe that the cookies and cakes I've made are gluten free. This would make a terrific holiday gift for the celiac in your family.

After several years of trying to adapt regular recipes to be gluten-free with varying results, it's so great to have a whole book full of tried and true recipes, often with instructions & ingredients I wouldn't think of. The gingerbread cake was a big hit at a recent dinner party with gluten-eating guests -- it was moist and springy with great flavor. no more dense squishy or falling-apart crumbly baked goods!

I give this book 5 stars because it's been great for me. I have guten sensitivity and for years I have not eaten pies, cakes, pizza, etc. This book has changed that because now I eat all of this frequently. When I first got the book I thought it would be hard to get her flour mixture from Authenic Foods. But it's EASY. Everything you need is cheap and easy to get. And, her recipes are easy! I make pie crusts and pizza crusts in a jiffy. I recommend a food processor or dough mixer on a stand.

This book was the first I read when my then two-year-old son was diagnosed with autism in July 2007. I guess I just got lucky and picked this one out at the bookstore. It is the very best place to start as a parent when your child gets an autism diagnosis. It offers both hope and solutions that your child can indeed be healed. My son is now a three year old who is NOT on the autism spectrum any more, he has recovered from autism. DAN! works, and Dr. Bock is as good as it gets.

Healing the New Childhood Epidemics - The Four A's

This is an excellent book, full of hope and practical steps to actually CURE the 4 A's of asthma, autism, allergies, and ADHD. One of the things that immediately pleased me about the book is that Dr. Bock doesn't waste the readers's time with assigning blame, but instead gets right to the point. I think that most people who would pick up this book already know about the correlation between vaccinations and the 4 A's, so we'll take that as a given.
The case studies Dr. Bock uses as examples are moving, but not tear-jerkers, and his narrative of his growth as an epidemiologist and development of his treatments is very interesting. He is very gracious in sharing the credit for the amazing breakthroughs he and other members of the DAN have achieved.
The book is so useful and clearly written that I bought a copy for my kids' pediatrician, my La Leche League library, myself, and 2 for my lending library (I'm a Bradley Method birthing instructor). I've reccomended it to several people whose children suffer from these illnesses. It is such an uplifting book, detailing real successes in treating children, rather than the typical disheartened medical shrug of the shoulders that can offer nothing to cure these children.
Even if you don't know anyone with any of the 4 A's, you'd enjoy reading this book. Even if you're not a parent, you should read it. Even if you're not trained as a scientist, you can understand it. Buy an extra copy and give it to your library or pediatrician. People need to know there's actually hope for autistic, asthmatic, allergic or ADHD kids!

As a pediatric speech-language pathologist, I found this book to be a helpful resource for professionals who work with children with autism and other developmental delays. The author explains biomedical treatments that many parents are interested in pursuing as they look for options and answers for their own children. I will recommend this book to client's parents and other professionals who are searching for additional information.

Wow, this book is amazing. I know that there is much controversy over autism, but as a mother of a child with this type of diagnosis it was wonderful to read a book that takes it from a different perspective. If the treatments used in this book work, then why argue the details. I assumed that this book would be a dry, factual book about the disorders mentioned, but it was captivating. As soon as I read a few pages I was hooked.

Perfect Resource Guide for Parents Considering a Biomedical Approach to a 4A disorder

This book is exactly what I needed. I have a six almost seven year old son who has been in ABA theraphy at a very good school for over three years. Unfortunatly, the ABA theraphy has helped but not nearly to the extent we were hoping it would. Since he is getting older and approaching (if he hasn't already passed) the age where he can no longer be cured (most things I've read said if you can't cure them by five they are who they are.... I hate those books)we figured we would try something we've been hesistant to do for the last three years.... biomedical treatment.

The thought of pumping my kid with up to 20 or 30 different supplements a day is scarry and something I hoped I wouldn't ever have to do but my son is getting bigger and more difficult to handle with each passing day.

We signed up with a company for sound and biomedical but I haven't received the confidience from the person we were going through. It seemed like they were just after our money and pushing all sorts of stuff at us that we weren't ready for. In defense of this I decided I needed to read up a lot more on this biomedical stuff. So I chose this book.

It has been a blessing to me to have picked this book. It has helped me realize that there might be hope for my child... if not a full cure.... at least a chance of some improvements. Improvements I haven't seen with ABA by itself. The first half of this book is explaining the enviornmental factors that "could" be causing this epidemic.

Some might say there is no epidemic but I do beg to differ. When I was a kid growing up in "kid area" the first time I heard about autism was the movie Rainman. Now, I'm raising my kids in a "non kid area - older area with fewer kids" and I have an autistic son, the people behind us have two on the spectrum and the neighbors next to them have a grandchild on the spectrum and another couple down the street who are raising their ADHD grandchild. It's everywhere and I do believe there are environmenal factors at work.

Anyway, this book does an excellent job the first half going through the reasoning of the biomedical approach with wonderful case studies. The second half of this book is a wonderful reference for all the biomedical stuff that you're kids can/will be on.

I also liked the fact that the doctor gave results of each of the therapis he mentioned so you have an idea what you're chances that certain things will actually improve your child. I like the fact that he doesn't guarnatee a cure like so many other people/books do.

Dr. Brock has written a book that I desperatly needed to read. Right now we are pumping my son with all sorts of supplements and we are seeing some results with it. It's early.... we've only been doing it for a month and a half. I know this is going to help him in some way and this book has helped me get over my fears of the biomedical approach and to give us a chance at helping my son.

Thank you Dr. Brock.

Good Information, Not The Best Presentation

Review Date: 2008-11-18
I have Reactive Arthritis, Ankylosing Spondolitis, and am HLA B-27 positive. My mother also has an auto-immune disease and several known food allergies. We both decided to try the juice fast and food reintroduction techniques found in the book. In short, The fast has helped reduce a lot of my mother's pain, but none of mine.

Overall, I think the ideas presented in the book are worth a try. I have heard several people state that approximately 30% of arthritis cases are caused, or at least worsened, by food allergies and sensitivities. In those cases, the arthritis can be cured by performing a juice fast and food reintroduction. The fast includes completely eliminating all foods, avoiding all other inputs - medication, alcohol, and smoking for example, and using enemas to clean out any trace food particles.

The book was easy to read and consistently provided footnotes to Allan's research and suggested reading. My issue with the book is the following:
Allan repeats some information ad nauseum, often at the expense of providing more detailed information elsewhere. I would have liked the sections on the actual fast and food reintroduction to be greatly expanded. For example, it is not sufficient to just say 'begin self-administered enemas and continue until regular bowel movements occur after the test is done'.

Also I feel that Allan gave a far-too-simple explanation of food reintroduction, and in some cases even contradicted herself. For example she states that when reintroducing food only test one food a day, then later says to test one new food every 24-36 hours, then in her sample guide to reintroducing food she says to introduce 2 foods on the same day (apple and a lettuce salad). There is no explanation why this example breaks her previous reintroduction strategy. The final complaint that I have is that much of the stylistic writing and font choice is unprofessional at best, repetitive and gratuitous at worst. All of these problems could have been solved by using a mainstream publishing company and editor, but I am sure no mainstream company would have published this book! That said, I do think that this book is worth purchasing if you have an auto-immune disease and are willing to work hard to solve it! Even though it didn't work for me, it may work for you.

As others have stated, this book is worth its weight in gold.

The best starting point for people with RA
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-22
At age 30, after being a college athlete and in "perfect" health, my daughter was diagnosed with RA. We were devastated!! Two years later, she was on Enbrel, methotrexate and other meds for her condition--things looked pretty hopeless. After much research into the disease, we decided we wouldn't just sit around and let the disease take it's course. Researching on Amazon's site, we came across Barbara's book and thought it sounded too good to be true! After all, the rheumatologists were telling us there was no cure. We had nothing to lose but the price of the book, a little time and effort--but we had everything to gain if it did indeed work.

One year ago, we started with the fast that Barbara recommends and we were absolutely shocked with what happened. After 5 days, my daughter was completely without pain, swelling or any sign of RA. We were ecstatic!! Now, the problem was sustaining it! This proved to be the most difficult of the equation. We enlisted the help of a PA who was open to a different approach to the disease and (as Barbara suggested) was able to get food sensitivities completed. Remarkably, the list was extensive, but corn wasn't on it!! My daughter undertook a rotational diet and added many supplements to her daily diet. After a period of six months, she was able to come off Enbrel and methotrexate, but not all of her meds. However, though it is slow,we continue to make progress. This disease didn't happen overnight and will not be stopped overnight.

I believe we couldn't have done this without Barbara's guidance. Her book became our source of strength when we thought about giving up. It was precise, thorough, informative and most importantly--certain this could be done.

There are four other books which we have used in this journey. One, Breaking the Vicious Cycle, is also a must read. Three others, Probiotics Revolution, Children With Starving Brains and Healing the New Childhood Epidemics, are based on the theory of disease being gut related. The latter three books are significant in that they give good recommendations for nutrients to combat inflammation of the gut, which appears to play a large part in RA.

Ms. Coss has also written a book called HOW TO MANAGE YOUR CHILD'S LIFE-THREATENING FOOD ALLERGIES. This, too, is a wonderful book for any parent who has a child with food allergies. Basically, this book includes the following:
1) The Food Allergy "Instruction Manual" - get step-by-step information to make your child's life safe
2) Practical, Sensible Advice - learn details on how to handle common and dangerous situations
3) An "Encyclopedia" in 200 Pages - covers topics including how to treat allergic reactions, how to buy and cook foods, how to make your house safe, and how to teach other's about your child's allergies.

I can't stress enough how wonderful Ms. Coss' books are for parents of children with food allergies. I think they are must-haves for parents like me who are constantly dealing with this very scary situation. Ms. Coss has lots of experience with food allergies. She has led a support group for parents of children with food allergies for over 10 years; and she is the mother of a teenage with multiple potentially fatal food allergies.

When my DS first developed food allergies, this was the book that was recommended to me. This book was a god-send to me when I was overwhelmed with what was going on. Almost three years later, I am still using this book. It is an allergy bible. Included in the book are sample restaurant cards, sample letters to write to your child's school, letters for medical personnel when you travel, tips on how to start a support group, how to read a label to recognize your specific allergen and much more! I have given this book to my DS's teachers and nurses, family members and friends. This is an absolute must have!

I ordered this book when my son was first diagnosed with his peanut allergy. This is a great book with really practicle day to day information on how to deal with real life events. She lays out different scenarios such as playdates, and birthday parties, and gives different suggestions on how to deal with them depending on your situation. Also being the mother of a food allergic child, this book really spoke to me on a more personal level, such as, "you are not crazy", "you can learn to live with this, and it will be ok", and "take some deep breaths.." She also has a great appendix in the back with all sorts of information, such as a script to use and leave at your house in case you need to call 911, and information on how to start a support group.

The concept is great, and I'm glad I have the book. But it was quite difficult to use because of the need to keep flipping back and forth. This should ideally be presented as a searchable CD, or even better, as an online database with a membership fee. That would also allow for more pictures, which would help greatly in identifying plants.

The Bible for allergy sufferers

As someone who has a history of allergies to almost everything, this book truly has become the Bible of allergies for me. In my opinion, this really is the best book ever written in regards to allergies. Tom Ogren outlines the allergy potential for every plant you've ever heard of, and a few you probably haven't heard of. When we moved into our new Southern California home a couple of years ago, we used this as a bible for landscaping -- if the book gave it a good pollen rating, we planted it. If it was a high pollen rating, we didn't plant it. The result? My allergies are better now than they have been at any time in my life, and this book has played a huge part in that! Even if you're not allergic to plants, get this book if you do any landscaping -- if everyone would follow his suggestions, there's no question we'd reduce the amount of allergic reactions by a huge amount. I can't say enough good about this book!!

I have owned this book for several years now and couldn't do without it. I do a good deal of gardening and before I buy any new plants at the nursery, I consult Allergy Free Grdening. My allergist suggested I buy this book, and I am very glad that I did. AFG helps me pick out trees, shrubs, vines, & flowers that will not cause allergies. It is very easy to use, interesting, useful, and surprisingly, kind of fun to read. There is also a good deal of solid advice on how to grow different kinds of plants.
Several of my friends also own this book and we all find it terribly useful. If you have allergies or asthma, or if you have a husband, daughter, son, or good friend who does, this is the book to own. It would also make a wonderful present for your favorite doctor, especially so if he/she is an allergist. I highly recommend Allergy-Free Gardening.

Allergy-Free Gardening really did change the way I look at plants. I have a background in both horticulture and botany and yet there was so much new material that I learned from this book that I was frankly, amazed. I knew a bit about plant sex, but in retrospect, very little.
In Thomas Ogren's eyes all plants are not created equally--or at least they certainly are not equally of value to us. In the past I planted and never gave much thought to whether or not something would be causing me rashes, allergies or other plant-triggered illnesses. I look at trees, shrubs, vines, flowers, lawns different now though. I use this book to find the best plants, the ones that will be attractive and useful in my garden and that will be healthy choices for me and my family.
I like the way Allergy-Free Gardening is set up. Everything is easy to find, easy to understand, easy to use. This author has a real talent for taking the very complicated and putting it all into easily understood layperson terms. His writing is fluent, personal, interesting. You have the feeling he cares deeply about what he does. I haven't read his newest book yet, Safe Sex in the Garden, but I have two friends who have and they thought it was excellent. I've ordered a copy of it also. But, if you garden or you are concerned about your health, I expect you will enjoy this book. I also find that I use it over and over as a general gardening reference book, since it is full of good, solid, down to earth horticultural advice. This is one of the best gardening books I own, and certainly the best thing written on allergies, asthma, and avoiding pollen.

The recipies in this book are so divine! They sound so wonderful, my mouth waters! Beautiful full color photos & advice about certain ingredients depending on your stage of the diet. I would have given this book 5 stars if I could use it. I find that the recipes are far to advanced for my stage of the diet. I think it would be a year easy before being able to use this book.
This is not a newbie book! If you are a newbie to the SCDiet, this is a book to keep in mind for when you are further along. If you are advanced in the diet, then by all means get a copy!

The book made me more conscious of what goes into what I cook and has changed my attitude to ingredients. Whether or not we have a gastric condition, we should all make an effort to eat food that is healthy and pure. This book addresses that simple goal superbly.

Pictures are enticing, ingredients are not too exotic, and recipes are not too labor-intensive! Even my non-SCD-diet family enjoys my creations using this book as a base!

I would suggest any with any type of digestives issues to try out this cookbook and the many others Specific Carbohydrate Diet cookbooks available such as Every Day Grain Free Gourmet also sold on Amazon. This diet will make you feel better as well as giving your entire family as a whole a healthier lifestyle. And the best part is the recipes all taste so good that you don't feel like your on a "special diet". You do have to spend a good amount of time in the kitchen preparing meals from scratch but to me the end result is worth it. I personally have not felt this good living with Crohns disease in years! Finding the SCD diet has given my life the positive turn around I needed!

I bought this book based on the positive feedback of other reviewers. I don't generally eat many sweets, but I was desperate for something to make for special occasions, since traditional, wheat-based cakes and cookies were definitely not an option.

I first made the "Orange Pecan Streusel Muffins". I had to order some of the specialty starches and flours from companies on-line before I could begin this recipe, as they are not available in my area. Once I had all the ingredients, the recipe was easy to follow, although fairly time-consuming. I substituted chestnut flour for the pecan flour. And the muffins were delicious! You would never know they were gluten-free. My husband, who is not gluten-intolerant, polished off two of them immediately. The recipe says to let the muffins cool before eating, but you can eat them a little warm if you like. yum.

I'm looking forward to trying some of the other recipes. This is a GOOD cookbook!

Being newly diagnosed as celiac I can say it is very confusing and reading lables is a time consuming job BUT in this book they list brand names of products that are normally glute/wheat free such as condiments and such. I still read labels, but with the help of the brand name references it helps to point me in the right direction. Easy to follow recipes even for the beginner.

This is undoubtly one of the most important issues facing the medical community today. The impact of this book is already far reaching and I am confident we will soon see a real turn-around in the ENT community in regards to these issue.
Point of fact: I just spoke to an Australian ENT, returned from training with the ex-president of the US Facial and Cosmetic Surgery Association who now agrees with the basic principals behind this book and "would not perform a partial inferior turbinate resection on a member of my family." And I was about to let my regular ENT perfom an 80% resection!... until I saw this book.
Get that. There's no denying this. It's real, and I pray for all the poor souls who will be inadvertantly butchered between now and when the new standard finally filters down into the offices of ENTs the world over.
Good luck Chris, and keep up the good work. Don't worry, by 2030 you'll probably have a bionic nose that can shoot lasers so you can go around zapping irresponsible ENTs.
They will call you: The Turbinator.

If you are considering any sort of nasal/sinus surgery, you owe it to yourself to read this book first. I don't think there is much general awareness on turbinates and the important functions they provide, which is why many (including myself) get talked into over-aggressive turbinate reductions.

In this book, Chris does an excellent job of covering what your turbinates do, the problems he has experienced, ways to cope, surgical techniques to consider, home remedies and more. I think it should be required reading for all ENT's and Plastic Surgeons that perform turbinectomies.

Aside from the medical information, the book is also well written, and Chris's story is inspirational. Again, I would highly recommend reading this book before considering any nasal surgeries.

Dear Chris and Family,
Thank you for this most telling account of your journey through the maze of ENS; your efforts in providing comprehensive information about ENS and your personal account of the roads that have lead to finding hope is inspiring. It has been a companion when I have felt alone and has been the platform through which I find the strength to advocate strongly for informed consent and knowledge of ENS for any person who is entering into nasal surgery.
Warmest wishes to you.

This is a must read for anyone that has had or is considering sinus surgery!
If it has been suggested to you that sinus surgery can correct your problems you absolutely need to read this book and do your research! Complications to sinus surgery can be life-altering and the damage permanent. As a victim of aggressive sinus surgery I can attest that these symptoms are very much real and can alter your reality in ways that I never imagined. I believe a great many ENT's do not fully understand the extreme importance the nose and sinuses play in the quality of life. With good intentions they can often remove too much tissue and bone in effect leaving the nose with the inability to function normally with regards to nasal cycles, moisture control, airflow and the health of the lungs. Chris does a wonderful job in explaining the importance of a healthy nose and sinus and the roles each structure plays in nasal health. If you do not know what a Turbinate is or what it does READ THIS BOOK!

Chris has put alot of time and effort in detailing everything a sinus suffer should consider before having surgery. Thankfully the ENT field is slowly beginning to understand that a very conservative approach should be applied when doing surgery. Chris explains each option a patient should discuss with the doctor performing the surgery. Each method is reviewed and rated for the possible outcomes and the conservation of important nasal tissue and structures.

If you have had sinus surgery done and are having problems Chris has outlined things you can do to help relieve some of the symptoms. For those having ENS type symptoms there are things you can do to help improve your sinus health. Chris describes things that he has personally tried that work and what others have used to find relief. Those that suffer from ENS type symptoms can find some comfort in the new methods Chris discusses in his book, to help rebuild important turbinate structures that have been removed in previous surgeries. Chris has first hand knowledge of how Alloderm implants may help improve the quality of life of ENS patients. With research into stem cell therapy and tissue regeneration the future is brighter. The important point that Chris makes is that ENS can be prevented if a conservative approach is used. Once removed, turbinates do not grow back. Conservation of nasal tissue is essential!

I can't recommend this book enough. I think it should be required reading for all those practicing ENT's that perform sinus surgery. Anyone suffering from sinus problems can find solutions that may make surgery unnecessary. Those that have had surgery and find their problems even worse than before surgery can also benefit from therapies and techniques Chris has outlined in the book. If you are considering having sinus surgery and have spoken to others around you that have had surgery it's important that you ask what was actually performed. Chances are they can't go any further than to say hey had a deviated septum corrected. It's of utmost importance that you go into surgery knowing EXACTLY what will be preformed and by what method. I went in for deviated septum and came out with an EMPTY NOSE!

Bravo to Christopher Martin for bringing the devastating problem upfront for discussion and sharing his personal story so that we can learn and hopefully prevent this devastating problem.

I truly wish that this book had been available prior to my nasal surgeries. I did research, but nothing that would have prepared and informed me like Chris Martin's book. It is very detailed and heartfelt. For those who have already rolled the dice and lost with a nasal surgery, this book offers hope, support and many helpful suggestions. ENS is real! Even with a "conservative" surgery, it is still possible to experience a myriad of debilitating symptoms. Doctors are often dismissive and unhelpful. Hopefully this book will begin to turn that tide.

I found this book after a referal from a lactation consultant after my third baby was born and in the nicu. I had low milk supply issues with each baby but it was worse after my baby was in the nicu. This book offers help that seems to be hard to find from doctors and the medical proffession at large. At the very least it explains things in a way that you can finally understand what is going on, rather being told some bland explanation from a doctor that doesn't offer any help.

I fell in love with this book. I had a lot of trouble breastfeeding my first child and as I was preparing for pregnancy with my second child, I wanted answers. This book explained a lot of the troubles that I personally had. The book is also a good nutrition book, not just for pregnant or nursing mothers, but for anyone. I highly recommend this book for anyone that is looking for nutrition or herbal advise for pregnancy and breastfeeding.

This book is outstanding. I had originally bought "Eat Well, Lose Weight, While Breastfeeding" and was so disappointed, I sent it back to Amazon. Then I found "Mother Food." I can't tell you what a valuable resource this has been for me. It has a very international feel (the author is Swiss) because it references cultures from all over the world and connects you with moms from ever corner of the globe on what works best for producing the highest quality of breastmilk for your baby. The best recipe in the book is for the "green drink." It's a blend of raw fruit and vegetable juices that increases the quantity and quality of your breastmilk amazingly. I make this drink everyday and since then have been able to pump a full 5 oz more milk each day. I have looked and felt so much better since beginning some of the routines described in this book and my baby has been much happier and had hardly any colic! You absolutely MUST buy this book.
