Purchase this book for Christmas or Kwanzaa gift-giving. Ms. Henry outlines proper attire, makeup, and education planning.
This book is an easy read, and can be used in a high school curriculum. Most of the information on proper attire is focused
toward young ladies. In my opinion, these suggestions cannot continue to "go without saying". Congratulations, Robin Henry
on an outstanding publication!

In this highly annotated exploration of the racism in health care, author Clovis E. Semmes pens a book perhaps more relevant
today as when it was published in Februay 1996.
One sentence seemingly encapsualtes the history of the industrial boom and the determining factors used by the various power brokers in locating factories and other facilities, "Blacks are overrepresented in 'high risk' occupations, which frequently expose them to toxic chemicals, and African-American communities are more likely than other communities to be located near dumping grounds for municipal refuse and toxic waste."
Go to any urban center throughout this country and you may see one or many more rusting factories, long-since abandoned, with soil so contaminated that property that should be worth hundreds of millions of dollars for redevelopment is worth next to nothing. And what population was living, working and raising families near the plants? Exactly.
The chapter entitled, Emancipation and the Roots of Health, sets the foundation for tightly-packed explorations into a gamut of issues, including, Psychosocial Factors of Health, Environmental Toxicity and -the important - Contemporary Challenges to Health; Destabiliztion, Maladoptation and Consumer Manipulation.
But there is also a message of hope. Semmes points to a new beginning, the opportunity to start picking up the pieces and building a real health-care system that will address the past wrongs of racism and deliver the care needed today & tomorrow in, Strategies for Change; Community Action and Public Policy.
A society is doomed without proper health-care. Semmes does a great service in exposing the past for what it was and showing a path to care that will truly serve in a professional & affordable fashion.

Religion In The Lives Of African Americans: Social, Psychological, And Health Perspectives is the collaborative work of Robert
Joseph Taylor (Sheila Feld Collegiate Professor of Social Work, University of Michigan), Linda M. Chatters (Associate Professor,
Department of Health Behavior & Health Education, School of Public Health, University of Michigan), and epidemiologist and
academician Jeff Levin. Religion In The Lives Of African Americans incorporates findings from eight national surveys containing
representative cross-section samples of the adult black population living in the continental U.S., plus a focus group study
conducted by the Program for Research on Black Americans at the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research. A work
of definitive scholarship, the primary perspectives are sociological and psychological, yet transcend those disciplinary boundaries
in evaluating the nature and functions of religion within black families and the black community. Informed and informative,
Religion In The Lives Of African Americans is enhanced for academia with the inclusion of data sources, tables, recommendations
for further study, end-of-chapter summaries, and implications for future research. Religion In The Lives Of African Americans
is especially recommended as a seminal contribution to Black Studies reference collections and supplemental reading lists,
as well as Contemporary American Religious and Cultural Studies. This is particularly rewarding reading for students of psychology,
sociology, human development, social work, public health as well.

This has been a wonderful book to use with 2nd graders. Each year they pair off and read the book outloud in the classroom.
The Riddle has been very helpful in teaching them that they will be making new friends all of their life and how much fun
it can be. In the classroom each of them has helped the other with words they do not know. It reminds me so much of the
book. Can you solve the Riddle? Read it outloud with someone else. It really is worth it.

"Secret Doctors: Ethnomedicine of African Americans" is a rare treat that blows away stereotypes that even some African Americans
may have about their own healing practices. This is a well done study without the bias that colors much of the work on this
topic. There is a generousity to Fontenot's writing style and curiousity that is most appreciated. "Secret Doctors" is a
welcomed book for a wide range of readers--scholars, traditional healers, doctors, students and the curious. The book reviews
some of the best literature in the field of ethnomedicine of African Americans but then opens the door to new ways of perceiving
the research. The amulet section and healer's interviews are unique--a wonderful contribution to understanding African American
magico-spiritual healing techniques as they relate back to West Africa. It is a slim volume in size but hefty in the contribution
it makes to the field. Highly recommended.
