My 8 year old son and I have enjoyed all of the Lightouse books. They are endearing, delightful and touching. The subject matter is light, family oriented and yet keeps my son's attention. He is enamoured of all the characters and I feel confident that he will return to these books many times.

Adoptive family's story-triumph over developm. difficulties
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-03-05
It's been a few years since I last read this wonderful book, but I still remember it as one which was very helpful to me after my overseas adoption of a handicapped child. At a time when many families would send the child back because of so many hard to handle disabilities, this family stuck it out and found the ultimate treasure. If your child struggles with developmental, physical, or eating disorders, this is a good book to read to help you realize there is hope in investing continuous love and hard work in your child. If you've adopted and been surprised by what you didn't realize you were getting, this book is a must have. Be prepared to cry and laugh.

Sachdev is a pioneer in adoption research. His book is refreshing because he is one of the first social scientists who does NOT ignore the life-givers in adoption. I hope this book is on many library shelves across the country.

Erin has always felt really close to her Aunt Joyce - so close that she could be a big sister or another mom. When she hears that Aunt Joyce is coming to stay Erin is really excited. Then Erin hears her mother and Joyce fighting - and she is sure that she heard her name in the middle of the fight. What is happening to her happy family - why are the people she loves arguing about her? Erin has to find the answer to this puzzle - can her friends help her when she needs them the most? Friendhsip and family are explored beautifully in this compelling novel. I found it hard to put down and read it in one session.

Great International adoption book

Review Date: 2007-07-09
As a parent going thru the adoption process as a "Virgin", i found this book extremely helpful, and a great read. There are so many heartwarming stories about international adoption, told by the parents themselves, and also with the siblings perspective and the kids perspective as they got older. Not all stories are "love at first sight", but dealt with attachment issues and stories of abuse. I read them with tears , but it's just amazing what love and patience can do. I really enjoyed the book and I really learned a lot. I just feel like we are ready to deal with whatever comes our way with this baby, and I know God would not give us something we couldn't handle. GREAT book and very heartwarming, even the sad stories.

I love this book!!!!

As a fan of Marilyn Sachs ever since she published the rare "Amy Moves In", I couldn't help but buy it when I found it in a used bookstore.

The story starts out simple: 11-year-old Molly gets news that her sister Beth is visiting, and although there is a lengthy description of why Molly lives with her aunt and uncle (who she calls Mom and Dad), we find out that Molly and Beth were in a car accident and their parents were killed.

Then, things get complicated. Beth isn't the happy-go-lucky, nice 13-year-old that Molly expects. Although Molly predicts Beth has a figure, that's it for what Molly thinks. Beth is actually hostile, mean, and just about the rudest person Molly has ever met. And for the first time in her life, Molly wants to kill her sister, or at least give her a good fight.

One day, Beth comes and starts babbling to Molly exactly what happened in the car eight years before. Molly, who's fed up with Beth, tells Beth to shut up, but Beth is either delirious with the accident scene or she's just not going to listen. Nevertheless, Beth keeps talking, and finally Molly wrestles Beth to the floor, and the girls wrestle, slap, and bite each other in the fury. Unfortunately for Molly, Beth has to leave then, but Molly knows she wants to slap Beth again before she leaves. But Beth babbles on at dinner, nevertheless, and Molly never gets around to fighting Beth again... although she did find out What Her Sister Remembered.

Charming Story with an Important Message
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-23
"Where Do Dingoes Come From?" is an enjoyable children's storybook. It tells the tale of "Dingo the dog ... a fictional story about a real dog."

The storybook is a literary component of the Dingo the Dog Project. The project offers support to local animal shelters, and is a clever voice to promote pet adoption from these shelters. It also strives to educate children on the proper care of pets.

The storybook itself centers on a child's persistent request to hear her mother recite the story of where dingoes come from, specifically her own dog, Dingo. The mother complies and relays the story of how she used to care for Dingo when he lived in a special home for dogs, until one day she decided to bring him home.

The story is told in words that a child will comprehend and enjoy, plus it will touch on their emotions as they hear about Dingo's loneliness and desire to be loved and cared for.

The vibrant illustrations are very appropriate for the age level of the content, and add even more enjoyment to the reading experience.

This is a charming story with a very important message. I will definitely read this to the wee ones in my life.

Where is Christmas Jesse Bear? Join Jesse and his bear family as they explore the sights, sounds, smells, activities and feelings that make this time of the year so wonderful. Is it the beautiful prickly tree or the ornaments and lights? Is it the aroma of cookies baking and spicey apple cider? Is it the music we hear, the wrapping of presents, the glow of candles or the falling snow? Jesse Bear finds out it's all these things and much, much more...most importantly, that warm feeling in your heart that comes from celebrating with family and friends. Nancy White Carlstrom's newest Jesse Bear book really captures the spirit of the season with this warm, gentle, rhyming story, as we watch Jesse and his family get ready to celebrate Christmas together. Her text is beautifully complimented by Bruce Degen's expressive, colorful, detailed illustrations and together they bring pre-schoolers the holiday message of peace on earth and joy to the world.

I really liked this book, written by a Canadian woman. Her own story is heart-warming and interesting. The stories and frustrations of other triad members are also well written, and to the point.
