It was a wonderful story. It dealt with issues people have before and after making the commitment to adopt and it was spectacularly filled with the emotions that surfaced while in China. A truly heart felt tale of the wonders of adoption.. He made me laugh, cry and smile throughout. It truly is a work of love for his adopted daughter and he does honor her greatly.

This anthology examines themes of adoption in drama, fiction, poetry, and film, from Shakespeare and Dickens up to "Secrets and Lies" and "Losing Isaiah." The authors examine older myths and stereotypes of adoption and adoptive mothers that we tend to forget in current conversations, such as the "shame" of illegitimate birth and "infertile" women. Imagining Adoption also covers current debates in the adoptive community on whether to pursue information on birth parents, open adoptions, and non-traditional families. More than interesting, this book is guaranteed to open a reader to many new insights about adoption and identity!

In Search of Belonging: Reflections By Transracially Adopted People
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-12
This is a unique and pioneering book that offers the reader a moving insight into the experiences of transnational and transracial adoptees. An essential read for policy makers, researchers, social workers, adopters and adoptees whose prior knowledge base had been founded on third-party research and knowledge. Transcribed from the contributors own `words' the accounts have not been politicised, edited or appropriated in order to enter into the wider debate concerning transracial and transnational adoption.

For the first time, the voices of those who have been hitherto, marginalized and suppressed have been empowered with an opportunity to simply express, through their own mediums of writing, drawing and sculpture, etc., how they have and continue to experience and live with the impact of adoption.

Interwoven with the life-long search for a sense of belonging are accounts of negotiating the immeasurable loss of birth families, heritage, culture and genetic identity whilst transcending feelings of isolation, loneliness, displacement and internalized racism.

Whilst many of the narratives are very emotive and poignant, accounts of resilience and courage are humbling. The contributions are informative, thought provoking, challenging, inspirational and extremely touching. This book will prove to be cathartic for many transracial and transnational adoptees as well as assisting professionals and all those involved in adoption in supporting good practice.

International adoption...plus a lot more
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-12-21
"The road to adoption in China begins with abandonment," Hannah Amgott writes. "Those Chinese infants who survive and are adopted internationally have an abiding need for a sense of history, belonging, and grounding. Throughout the writing of my book, I had one aim in mind: to craft something lasting and meaningful as a legacy for my daughter." She describes IN THE YEAR OF THE OX as a tale of "love, hope, survival, and the evolution of an adoptive mother."

Through this insightful collection of journal entries, letters, and poetry, Hannah Amgott conveys the scope and impact of milestones and emotions experienced over a twelve-year Chinese zodiac cycle, a cycle that celebrates obstacles overcome, triumphs achieved, and the influences of varied people and experiences along the way.

This inspiring memoir is brief and amazing. It's also a collectible, with stunning original cover art from New York artist Richard Lang Chandler. IN THE YEAR OF THE OX is a true gift for anyone who's enduring the trials and tribulations of infertility, cancer treatments, or adoption. I highly recommend it!
