This is an excellent book....To me, loss of vision would be the worst disability to suffer.

Janet lost one eye as a baby due to cancer, and was told she would lose vision in the other eye in the near future. She was put into a blind school (which had a red door) when she was a child, and didn't understand why she was there. She was 33 when she finally lost her other eye - it had finally succumbed to the aggressive radiation that she was given as a child.

Janet was also adopted as a baby, and wanted to find her natural parents to see if the retinoblastoma was hereditary. When she was 18, she met her mother, who said she didn't want anything to do with her. Her father is a high-profile media personality in Australia. He finally accepted Janet as his daughter, and they now keep in regular contact.

This book is about Janet's journey through her childhood, and into adulthood with a vision disability. Worthwhile reading.

Bone of My Bone is at times funny, at times sad, but all the time easy to read. It was very clear in it's meanings and made me think more about God and how I feel about Him. Mr. Hammon had a very interesting life. It is really neat how God got him together with his birth father. It is sad that more people can't get back together like this.

A must for Christian adoptees!

The format of this book provides an opportunity for adopted children to read about a fictional character, Brian, and how he feels about adoption. It is a positive perspective about some difficult challenges that adoptees face. It also provides a prayer by Brian after each of his comments about a particular issue.

This book can be a springboard for conversation, as well as a tool to help an adopted child deal with some of the challenges he/she might face. I would highly recommend it!

Not The Brady Bunch!

After thirteen years of leading a quiet life with her single mom, Carrie's world is turned upside down when her mother suddenly remarries and the two move into the noisy, crowded home of Dominic and his three kids, who Carrie has never even met. She has a lot to get used to, such as sharing a room with sullen older stepsister Ginger, changing schools and being put into the same class as nerdy stepbrother Newton, and dreading the upcoming day in family court, where Dominic plans to legally adopt her. Miserable at first, Carrie gradually begins to understand and accept her new siblings as they begin to warm up to her as well. However, she continues to keep her distance from Dominic, clinging to the dream that her real father, who she hasn't seen in years, will suddenly appear and "rescue" her from this family. This is a nice story about the conflicts that arise when two families blend into one. I read this as a pre-teen in the early 1980's when divorce and remarriage wasn't quite as prevalent as it is today, so it seemed much more unique back then. However, it is still a good story with well developed characters, and I recommend it for middle school aged girls.

Tender true story of adopting & raising multi-race children
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-01-04
"Butterflies in the Wind" is another helpful book for parents raising children, but especially in a family with other race children. My husband and I were helped greatly 30 years ago, by the authors, and their initial book, "How to adopt Internationally." When we decided to add to our family by adoption, we heard about Jean and Heino, then in our city, and learned how to go thru the process. We learned so much from them in adopting our beautiful, 29 year old daughter, and it is fun now to read about their experiences which were similar, but not exactly like ours. I have found it hard to explain fully to my daughter our journey and mission to adopt her. But Jean has helped me with this by writing this book. She has a special knack for putting into words, and in her writing, the many feelings and thoughts of parents. Her love and compassion for children shows through in many delightful anecdotes (I found my self laughing out loud while reading the section on 'teen' challenges) but I also appreciate her no-nonsense approach to child rearing in general. Much of what she writes about applies to any family, international or regular. The challenges of the 70s, 80s and 90s raising kids, were tough. But discussing the challenges never seems to take away from the main message of the book, that children are treasures to be protected, nourished and cherished in a family.
