This is truly an excellent book. Book covers in detail, ALL involved regarding fostering or adopting children. Covers from
the childs initial contact with the agency until adulthood when they start to seek their birth parents. The book also includes
not only the parents emotional involvement with the placement process but the grandparents, and foster parents. This is
a book that should be a reprint, it is truly a book of value!!!

Well worth reading! Adoption and child welfare issues.

This book is excellent for anyone who is interested in child welfare and adoption issues. I would recommend it to anyone thinking
of adopting thru the child welfare system. She includes stories from a range of families and presents issues that have impacted
their lives and the adoption process. Stories from single parents, couples, lesbian/gays, disabled families are well-balanced.
She touches on issues involved in adoption through the "child welfare system". Altho she is from Canada she includes issues
from the US. Great insight.

Not a dry academic book, but a powerful and moving personal account

This book was recommended to me as a very good account of attachment theory and how it can be used to understand the experience
and behaviour of adopted children and children in foster care. What I didn't realise until I picked it up was that it would
be such a powerful and moving book. I was gripped from the first page and literally moved to tears by the compassionate, but
unsentimental account of the author and her family caring for children profoundly hurt by their earlier experiences of neglect
and abuse. From my own work in the fields of fostering and adoption I am familiar with the harrowing stories of many children,
but I have never before read anything which captured this so accurately. At the same time it also provides an amazing example
of how genuine caring and compassion combined with a thorough understanding of trauma and loss can bring a degree of healing
to traumatised children. I think that this is a book which should be read by everybody working with or caring for children
who have experienced difficult early life experiences, but it is also a book so beautifully written that almost anybody will
find it absorbing and illuminating.

This is truly a story that not only touched my heart but brought tears to my eyes. A wonderful story of adoption told through
the words of an adoptive mother and illustrated by her son. The joining of language and art truly gives the reader a feeling
of love that surrounds the child who is to be adopted and for the hope in her new life. If you are an adoptive parent, or
know an adoptive parent, looking for a book to help you tell a story of adoption to your child - this is the one to get. I
highly recommend it.

A great roadmap for openness in adoption and it's about time!

I see so many books come across my desk but this one really struck me. Patricia has crafted an open and honest roadmap for
how to work with an open adoption that includes the thoughts and feelings of all members of the adoption triad. From the
adoptive parent who doesn't want to "loose" their child to another mother, to how to balance a child who is angry with one
parent and wants to run to the other.
This honest and compelling memoir will help you understand the road of open adoption, the pitfalls and the joys that come from extending the circle of love and making your family that much more inclusive. Openness is truly the best way for our adopted children and Patricia reminds us that the good relationships take work, honesty and trust. I hope this book will help more families open relationships and extend that circle of family love to all that need to be included. Thanks for the wonderful tools, Patricia!

It's always been Ben and his father - until they meet Casey and Casey decides to marry his dad. A baby is adopted from China
- and pretty soon there's a huge family building. Ben's transition to this large family drives BEN AND THE SUDDEN TOO-BIG
FAMILY and makes for a moving, fun story of a boy's ability to adjust. Middle school readers, especially, will find it involving.

This book is fun, interesting, catchy and leaves a big question mark in your head about what will happen next to Bernard Wheel
and the Lake Elsinore Boys. This book also reminds you that you can do anything if you believe, or in other words, you can
do anything with mind over matter. The book hypnotizes you to read more and more. It is the kind of book you can read over
and over according to my son, who is a fifth grader.

I'm so surprised nobody has reviewed this wonderful book yet! I guess it's up to me.
First, this book is easy to read and comprehend, which is good because there is lots of useful information to remember. There is nothing in this book that is not covered. It even has a section about the tick diseases greyhounds can have because at the tracks, the dogs are not given any sort of flea/tick control.
This book does not take sides in the greyhound racing debate. Instead it gives truthful, unbiased information all about greyhounds! If you are seriously interested in adopting a retired racing greyhound, this is the book for you. It has lots of gorgeous photographs and short, fun stories about adopted greyhounds. It is very well organized and it is easy to find what you are looking for.
I really like Adopting the Racing Greyhound by Cynthia A. Branigan also, but if I had to pick between the two I would pick this one simply because the information is just as good plus you get color photographs and shiny pages. Whee! Also, it is a hardcover book and in my opinion that is a plus.
This book is perfect and lovely. I highly recommend it to any greyhound fan!
