Toil Under The Sun is a moving account of an adopted boy who grows to manhood amidst tumultuous emotions about love and acceptance. Mr. Ritter does a fine job of blending these character emotions in a story complete with action, suspence, humor, love, and sacrifice. The book is well-written, with action of the present blended nicely with reflections from the past. A very enjoyable read.

A wonderful, moving novel that you don't want to end

Toil Under the Sun is a moving account of an adopted child's struggle to accept love. For any individual or family dealing with adoption issues, it gives insight into the wound of having been relinquished. The parallel stories in each chapter are well crafted together to move the reader from the past to the present. I was uplifted by the final outcome, and only regretted that I didn't get to follow Timothy into his new acceptance of being loved. This wonderful, moving novel is one that you are sorry to have end.

Excellent read

Mr. Ritter provides a story which explores the shoals of cynicism to the depths of acceptance of life. The vehicle for this exploration is an adopted son, analytical father, best friend, and a cold war policing action. The characters are new and familiar so as to be interesting, insightful and meaningful to the reader. The reader can expect to spend a pleasant weekend with these enjoyable characters as they come to terms with their "toil under the sun".

I read this book over the course of a week while trying to care for two newly adopted children in our home. Sheaffers went to extraordinary measures to achieve their dream of adopting two children. Having been through two adoptions myself, I could relate to the disappointment of infertility and the desire to have children. The book highlights the persistent faith of the Sheaffers and you will be amazed that people throughout the country caught their story and helped to make a dream reality. The first half of the book reads very fast. The middle slows down as the story of America's Crisis Pregnancy Helpline unfolds. The story of their second adoption also reads fast. If you are planning to adopt, this book is a must read. It won't tell you how to adopt or give you incredible resources, but it will give you a first hand account of the ups and downs that you will face. Each of their adoption stories overwhelmed me with memories of our first adoption of a newborn. While the book is written more for adoptive parents, it also highlights the tragic situation that faces women with unplanned pregnancies. If you are a birthmother, you will read about two very different birthmothers and their reaction to placing their child. Our second adoption had three false starts where birthmothers/fathers decided to parent the child after delivery. Also, if you are in a crisis pregnancy, the book is a better resource to connect you with adoption agencies and counseling.

....A very impressive, up-to-date compilation of U.S. and foreign contact information for government agencies and organizations useful in searching for people or records. The author also provides extensive tips and background on searching, in a helpful step-by-step format. This sort of reference book (which the author plans to keep updated) should become a standard source in any library supporting genealogical or other public record-related research.

Wow, this was really a terrific book. There is such a realness from the stories that are shared. I enjoyed the stories about a white woman going to a black church and the whole problem with the little girl's hair was so funny. It was very cute. I laughed and cried and smiled throughout.

It was hard to put this book down, and when I had finished reading it, my heart and spirit had been truly touched by Bradie Moore's very personal insights into the cultural and spiritial transformations she experienced during the bi-ratial adoption process.

This is a must read for anyone who has or is considering a bi-racial adoption or would just like to receive a glimpse into the life of this woman and her experience. This book takes the reader from the authors novice beginnings that make the reader laugh until tears stream, all the way to the profound depth that Bradie Moore takes us into. She shares her relationship with her daughter, her frustrations and triumphs on bringing her home, her faith and the wonderful relationships she has built between two cultures. Highly recommended reading!

This book was one of the best books I've ever read. It's not that often you come across a book that tells so much about how orphans feel and act. I'm in middle school and I feel I can really connect with some of the characters even with an age difference. I recomend this book to you with 5 stars and 2 thumbs up!

What Love is All About

A touching story that will stay with you for many years to come. It demonstrates in a prose that is poetry how true love means perseverance in the gift of self to the other, neither measuring how much nor counting how often.

Small but mighty

Review Date: 2000-01-05
The poetic resonance of Marie Harris'words will linger with you long after you have finished this remarkable memoir only 77 pages in length. This is a little book with a big story to tell and it is told in a MASTERFUL way. This book has more punch and breadth to it than a work five times its size. The author, the Poet Laureate of New Hampshire, uses her skill as a poet to pluck out the most powerful and essential elements of the story about her adopted son, Manny, a 14 year old Puerto Rican teenager. This bittersweet (often humorous) bite of reality will transport you to both physical addresses and emotional places....accomplished with the minimalistic artisty of a very talented wordsmith. And, OH, the words on those pages! Is it prose? Yes! Is it poetry? Yes! Is it music? It sings! Is it a schmaltzy, run-of-the-mill melodramatic, "Hallmark commercial"-type book?... NO! NEVER! (no puppies or children die...just a few unnamed chickens) It's a love story which is never precious or sappy/ sentimental. This book deserves to be widely distributed and read.

Marie Harris's book took my heart. I can relate to Manny through my own adopted daughter who is now 10 and has been living with us only 15 months. Love is not always the whole answer but children like Manny and my daughter change the world around them for the better. I have read many books on adopting the older child but Marie's presentation is so beautiful her story will appeal on many levels.

Bitter & twisted black comedy at its best
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-24
If you are sick of feel-good, warm and fuzzy, heart-warming reads and feel the need to indulge in a bit of cynicism, then this is just the book you're after. Be prepared to find hilarity in things which are neither politically correct nor particularly kind - I caught myself laughing out loud about a comment on famine on page one. Not really what you would normally consider the stuff of comedy, but that is the brilliance of this book. The main character, Steven Ralph, says it like it is and how many of us would probably like to. It is this which makes his somewhat unorthodox take on life and way of dealing with it paint him less like a lazy sociopathic slob than a guy you can actually sympathise with. Utterly entertaining, I just wish there was more by this author.

Black comedy may have a new star.

Review Date: 2005-02-04
Stephen Ralph is a remarkably unsuccessful freelance copywriter approaching middle age. He's a cynical, boozey, politically incorrect, suicidal loner. In short he's a self indulgent slob, yet a strangely likeable one.

This is the very darkly funny story of a man teetering on the brink of every type of catastrophe - emotional, spiritual, physical, financial and professional. Yet salvation may be at hand in the form of a large friendly canine called Caesar who "Ralphy" saves from doggy death row in an attempt to restore meaning to his unsatisfying existence. Unfortunately redemption is seldom so straight forward.

King takes us on a rollicking, yet disturbingly brutal adventure full of surprisingly lovable and completely loathable characters and it's laugh out loud funny. The set pieces are as well crafted as the best standup comedy and the unexpected twists and turns will keep you fully engaged to the final page.

King's well crafted first work will leave you thirsting for more. Watch this space we could be looking at the next big thing.
