Very inspiring collection of stories.

This book is a collection of short stories written by teens. Their lives have been touched by the effects of death, drugs/alcohol, physical differences, abandonment, abuse, poverty, prejudice, emotional problems, violence and more. The authors of these stories have come face-to-face with many of these challenges and have found that they have emerged stronger for having gone through them. It is very compelling and would be an excellent book to share with a church youth group (for discussion) or to purchase for your own children. Have a hanky ready!! Recommended ages 11 & up.

BIG ATTENTION GRABBER! TODDLERS LOVE IT!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1998-07-19
Beautiful, photographic pictures of a wide variety of babies and toddlers, mostly caucasian. See the baby eat, play with her toes, take a bath, pull off socks, take a first step and blow out a first birthday candle.

I bought this book when my daughter was a toddler. It was (and still is) one of her all time favorites. My daughter is now 11 years old and shares this book with our young neighbors. They all love looking at pictures of babies, like themselves.

I highly recommend this book for infants through preschool.

I walk into uncharted waters

I'm On My Way Running is a compilation of thousands of writings about girls and young women through their changes from adolescence into adulthood. The writings include excerpts from novels, diaries, journals, autobiographies, multi-cultural traditional songs and much more, and most are fairly short (1 to 3 pages). They come from all over the world, and there is something from almost every culture and religion, from times dating back several centuries to writings as recent as the 1970's.

The book starts with the start of puberty and each section contains writings from the next age to the next until the newly grown women are now looking back and seeing how much like their mother they really are.

This book deals with every issue imaginable to a woman, and many unimaginable to most men, and I find it very interesting. I see a pattern that seems to stay mostly the same in these writings, whether the young woman is a rebel or traditional, whether she wants to strike out on her own or be a house-wife. That common thread has to do with a set of values that is passed in almost every culture from mothers to daughters - a set of values few men ever see or hear of, but that women expect men to live by as common sense. This was extremely eye opening to me, and allows me to be more patient with the female race as a whole as well as with myself.

I highly recommend this book to all women who seek a kindred spirit - whatever background you have, I am sure you will find one in one of those writers. I also recommend this to every man who thinks he will ever understand women or wants to try. No one will ever understand a woman as well as herself, and often she won't understand herself either. But this will give you patience, I am sure.

Well-written, well-researched overview of teenage identity
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 1997-02-18
An excellent, well-written, logical, well-researched discussion of the development of adolescent identity. Ms. Jane Kroger examines in her erudite book, Identity in Adolescence, the viewpoints of several prominent scholars in the field of adolescent psychology. These scholars include such notables as Erickson, Kohlberg, Loevinger, Kagan, and Blos. Each of these renowned academics represents adolescent identity growth with a groundbreaking model, which Ms. Kroger expertly critiques and shows its relationship to the other models. After finishing the book, readers will have a better understanding of how teens mature, how they come to see their roles and the roles of others. Additionally important, these readers will have learned about both the indicators of healthy, well-adjusted, achievement-oriented adolescence, and those indicators which suggest a more dysfunctional adolescence. This book is useful for anyone with a strong interest and concern about teens, be they scholars, teachers, or parents. Eric Seel

Erikson is the man when it comes to understanding identity.

Admittedly, Erik Erikson is not an easy read (in fact his biographer Lawrence Friedman speculates what Erikson could have become had he been a more disciplined researcher, and writer.) Nevertheless this book provides keen insight into the phenomenon of the adolescent identity crisis.

"Crisis" in Eriksonian parlance is not used to connote an "impending catastrophe," but rather a "necessary turning point, a crucial moment, when development must move one way or another, marshaling resources of growth, recover, and further differentiation." Erikson deals effectively with a process that is at the core of the individual and in the core of the individual's communal culture.

After reading Lawrence Friedman's biography on Erikson entitled "Identity's Architect," I have come to appreciate the richness of Erikson's observations, such as "I shall present human growth from the point of view of the conflicts, inner and outer, which the vital personality weathers, re-emerging from each crisis with an increased sense of inner unity...," knowing that Erikson himself came to such conclusions only after examining his own storied past.

The illegitimate son of a Danish mother, and a father of unknown nationality, "Identity's Architect" weathered many a conflict, both inner and outer, as he journeyed toward a sense of his own identity.

Identity: Youth and Crisis is not an easy read, but it is rich with insight into the most mysterious and turbulent of all stages in the life cycle: adolescence. Ideal for those students of child psychology, child development, and those who work with youth.

Very good reference on improving school attendance. Case studies and sample attendance policy included. Motivating students to go to school regularly and punctually is not enough; children's education is a collaboration of school, parents/carers, local community and government. The book emphasised on student monitoring through letters, phone calls or home visits.

I have had the opportunity to use the program with two groups of young adolescents, and have found the manual an excellent guide to both discussion and follow-up "homework" activities. The "Log" has been especially well received by both kids and parents. I have used it in a private practice setting, and would imagine that it would be just as useful in an institutional setting. I recommend the manual to anyone thinking about using an anger management program with adolescents.

Janet Johnston is one of the most careful and thoughtful researchers in the field of family law. "In the Name of the Child" is a compilation of all of her collected wisdom dealing with high conflict and other families who find themselves in the courts. The best kernel for me, however, was her description of the "ideal family court", a model closely tracking with the one we have developed for the state of Oregon.

Based on a longitudinal study of children starting in the 1930's, this book describes behavior of children at certain ages. It does not tell you how to raise your child. It simply tells you what to expect at 3 months, two years, eight years, etc. Instead of perceiving your child's behavior as peculiar or bad (and therefore punishing the child), the parent can see the behavior as normative. It enables acceptance of your child as he or she is and should be.
