Adolescents Books

This is a great book! Anne Bannister helps us to understandthat those abused children are survivors and the price that they payby surviving. This book makes you stop, think and feel a lot of things that will help you to work with abused children or adults that have an abused child inside of them.

I took a college class for educators from Roger Puza and I have to say that it was the best class I have ever taken. Roger was just finishing up his book at that time, so I haven't read it yet. I'm glad to see that it is now available on Amazon. If his book is as great as his class was, any Health educator would do well in acquiring this book and utilizing it in their class.

This is a massive book but an easy read filled with the latest research and personal experience with older adults. This is the perfect reference shelf item for anyone who works with older adults. The humor injected throughout makes this an easy read and Dr. Haber, a truly gifted writer, sets a very relaxed and comfortable tone that isn't filled with medical jargon. This is THE book doctors should read before seeing older patients.

Peake is commended for openly and honestly addressing the current condition of health care for the aged. " Healthy Aging, Healthy Treatment " is an excellent addition to the library of those who provide health care services to the aged. Troughout this text Peake presents a non-treatening yet effective means by which to address the primary goal of psychotherapy; re-writing core beliefs. The current story of health care for the "third age" is repleat with frightening images as well as themes of ignorance, denial, neglect and fear. Perhaps we can use Peake's final chapter as an outline by which to re-write this mystery into a story that more accurately reflects our innate care, concern and compassion for one another.

The Heart Of Development: Adolescence is the second volume in the "Great Approaches To Working With Children, Adolescents And Their Worlds" series, and aptly edited by the collaborative efforts of Mark McConville and Gordon Wheeler. Adolescence is an extensive guide to the Gestalt model of working with children, adolescents, and their families. The applications presented herein range among settings from the clinical office to the family and schools. Creative new ideas and effective interventions are described for those who practice every school and method of psychology. The Heart Of Development: Adolescence is an enlightening read and recommended for students of psychology and therapists who work with adolescent youth and their families.

Last is an informed and informative instructional documentation for parents with troubled children, seeking valid aide in their children's lives with out the immediate help of professionals. As the ideal reference for struggling parents, Help For Worried Kids enlightens readers on many of the helpful tactics for solving frequent issues that children have with anxieties and fears. Very highly recommended for its informative introduction and in-depth analysis of all the information a worried parent needs, Help For Worried Kids is the ideal addition for all child and family psychologists and parents alike.

As a psychiatrist who works with teens and families, I am pleased and excited by this great new book by child psychiatrist Ken Talan, MD. It offers exactly what concerned parents want to know about child mental health problems and common treatments, compassionately explained in plain language. For the purpose of a syntopic review, I will classify this book as the other half of a pair of parenting books from the same publisher that also includes A Parent's Guide to Primary School, by Kathy Bryne & Harvey McGavin. Thus, I will write the review of this latter book separately.

This particular book helps the reader make sense of secondary schools today by providing practical advice & information, through real-life examples & interviews with parents, teachers & education experts.

At the onset, the author reveals three basic ideas that run through this book:

- Love conquers all i.e. parents must feel a deep love & affection for their children;
- Parents don't make their children do good by making them feel bad about themselves; with empathy & understanding, they must blend with their children & try to see the world through their eyes;
- The only way for parents to get their children to do what they want them to do is to help them want to do it;

Against this backdrop of idea streams, the layout of chapters is organized as follows:

- 1. Teenager's Physical & Emotional Development;
- 2. Teenager's Thinking Problems;
- 3. Communication Skills;
- 4. When Communication Gets Difficult;
- 5. Communicating with the School;
- 6. Establishing Rules;
- 7. Responsibility & Self-Discipline;

As you can see from the foregoing, the coverage is relatively extensive & yet comprehensive enough for a book of this size, about 130 odd pages. Each & every conceivable parenting aspect (or need) is consistently well treated by the author.

Chapter 7, among others, is an excellent piece of work, especially the four quadrants of behaviour. The author shows parents how to use the four quadrants. In Chapter 8, `Do the Right Thing' as well as `Do The Thing Right' are some of life's most essential lessons.

There is a preamble in the form of `Start with the End in Mind" the beginning of each chapter (a good way to get started); a quick review, as well as action exercises, at the end of each chapter.

I also like the author's recommended application of the Rule of 3, which originates from the US Marine Corps, for parents when giving instructions to their teenagers. I also like his attitude towards rule breaking. He is not referring to silly & trivial rules put in place by silly authorities. He is talking about the two rules (only two rules you need as parents):

- respect;
- health & safety;

So the full statement of his (universal) principle is: You cannot break the rules. You can only break yourself against the rules.

In my PTA talks, & because of the abundant tips & useful strategies, I often recommend this book, together with the other mentioned above, among others, to parents & guardians.

To sum up, & if you are often confronted with these issues:

- how can I play a bigger role in my teenager's education?
- Where should I go for help if my teenager is having problems in school?
- I am struggling to help my teenager with their homework - what can I do?

Read this book & you will definitely be better informed & happier as parents.

This is a brilliant guide for parents who may be starting to realise that they cannot change their teenager but that somehow they need to do something different themselves . Good solid advice and what is almost a workbook for adressing a wide range of teenage related difficulties. I found ideas in here that helped a lot when I had teenagers and as a therapist it is a book I recommend to clients ! It is the best practical book on the topic that I have come across.It addresses well the issues of responsability , control and values as they relate to struggling with one's teenage kids !
