Expertly compiled and deftly edited by John R. Z. Abela (Associate professor and William Dawson Scholar in the Departments of Psychology and Psychiatry, McGill University, and Director of the Cognitive Behavior Therapy Clinic, Montreal Children's Hospital) and Benjamin L. Hankin (Assistant Professor of Psychology, University of South Carolina), the "Handbook Of Depression in Children And Adolescents" is a compilation of contributions by some of the foremost scientist-practitioners working in the field of juvenile depression, its origins and treatments. Utilizing a framework of developmental psychopathology, the "Handbook Of Depression in Children And Adolescents" divides the articles into five major sections: Introduction and Epidemiology of Depression; Etiology of Depression; Treatment of Depression; Prevention of Depression; and Special Populations. Presenting an impressive body of seminal studies, and enhanced with both an Author Index and a Subject Index, the "Handbook Of Depression in Children And Adolescents" is a core and strongly recommended addition to both professional and academic library Psychology & Psychiatry reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

Mental health interventions in children and adolescents

This is a serious book on developmental psychopathology in children and adolescents edited by a very competent person. professor Hans Steiner, who was born and educated in Vienna, Austria (it seems we have had many excellent physicians coming out of that town over the last 100 years), but received his expertise in child and adolescent psychiatry at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and his adult psychiatry at SUNY Upstate Medical Center. Today he is professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine with several important textbooks and many hundreds of published scientific articles.
This is a first edition on the developmental science and evidence based clinical practice for children and youth with mental health problems with a focus on intervention. This book has 36 chapters with 54 mainly American contributors divided into four parts: developmental science, psychopharmacology, psyvhotherapy and sociotherapy.
Each chapter in itself is an enjoyment, but it was nice to find a whole chapter on research methodology in clinical trials by Kirti Saxena and Christine Blasey, both from Stanford University.
This handbook and in fact tewxtbook is warmly recommended for students in psychopathology from the field of both child and adolescent psychiatry and psychology.

This handbook is edited by professor Lisa Rapp-Paglicci from the School of Social Work, University of South Florida, professor Catherine Dulmus and research director John Wodarski at the College of Social Work, University of Tennessee together with 41 American and one contributor from the University of Belfast from the fields of social work, public health and psychology.
There are 20 chapters divided into five parts: Introduction, preventive intervention for emotional problems, health problems, social problems and conclusion. Morbidity in childhood and adolescence has changed and the new disease pattern is dominated by obesity, diabetes, teen pregnancy, substance abuse, school violence and child abuse. The editors have chosen to use the primary prevention model developed by Gordon (Gordon R. An operational classification of disease prevention. Public Health Reports 1983;98:107-9), where the focus is on interventions to prevent the onset of a disorder or problem. Such intervention is divided into three areas: universal (interventions targeted to the general population), selective (interventions targeted to individual or groups at high risk for a specific disorder) or indicated (targeted for individuals with detectable signs or symptoms of a specific disorder). This theory is the basic concept for the presentation of the different chapters in this handbook on subjects like teenage suicide, substance abuse, teenage prognancy, AIDS, eating disorders, school violence and dropout.
We found this book based on sound research with a focus on evidence based approach to prevention, which can provide practitioners, policy-makers and professionals with sound material on emotional, health and social problems facing children and youth today.

This is the kind of text that people will likely want to hold onto and include in their personal library. This book is a good one to pick up for anyone who is either in training to become or is a therapist looking to continue their education in the area. The area of psychology seems to be moving in the direction of integration and this text help to provide an understanding of what exactly this is and how to achieve this with almost any area.

Simply one of the most intriguing books I have read in the past five years. Once I picked it up, I could not put it down until I finished. Clear and concise without a shred of mundane story-telling. There is no doubt the author knows the subject material extremely well. A must read for anyone with interest in this period of British history.

How to Help Your Kids Have the Success We All Want.

Review Date: 2006-04-04
There is a funny scene early in the movie "The Graduate" (where everyone is asking Dustin Hoffman about his plans) that ends with one well-intentioned relative advising a career in "Plastics!" Funny, but sadly realistic in that many parents, teachers and friends often ignore or avoid discussion of the issue of meaningful work with youngsters - until just about the time he or she needs to enter the workforce.

In late years "Take Your Daughter to Work" Day has, thankfully, evolved to "Take Your Child to Work" Day but participants (employers and employees alike) are still a minority. Career Days at school are enjoyable but often offer only a cursory look at the world of work.

As a career expert, author and speaker myself I read and review a lot of career books and "Having a Job Just Like Recess" fits the description of a certain success in that it "finds an unmet need and fills it." And quite nicely, I might add.

Goals, ideals and visions of success are often set early in life. If you want to help your child to eventually have the gift of a job and career he or she loves, one where the rewards are more than monetary, one where their gifts are fully utilized then you will find this book an engaging and practical resource to help start them on that path.

Today's parents face so many demands that I almost hesitate to add 'guidance / career counselor' to their job description but if you don't do it, who will? Don't you wish your parents did? Grandparents - skip the next soon-to-be-forgotten toy and get this book into your grandchild's household.
