As a primer to the state of immigrant children's health in America this book is highly useful, particularly in explaining
the impact of welfare reform (PRWORA). Besides being well-researched and structured, the book is also written well.

This is a nice volume of cross-discipline articles to pick up if you're academically interested in the subject matter. There
is an article by Helen Schwartzman in here about ethnography in child peer cultures (are you as a researcher 'in' or 'out'?)
that I found exceptional. Should you buy the book? Yes- if you study behavior, folklore, or play theory in anthropology.
Otherwise, your local university library may have one, as this probably won't appeal much to a casual reader.

This is the second edition of an important book, first published in 1986 and edited by Charles Schaefer, professor of psychology
from the Fairleigh Dickinson University and Steven Reid, who is in private practice in New York. Games are a very important
part of child development and there are some of us, who will never stop playing games, even in adulthood. Games can be played
by the person for his or her own enjoyment, but it is also a tool of communication between the professional or therapist and
the child, adolescent or client. It is essential in play therapy and the first edition was very helpful in the new classification
of how games were used in therapy to further development and emotional growth: communication games, problem-solving games,
ego-enhancing games and socialization games. The first edition catalyzed specialization in the field of game play therapy
and this second edition is devided into five parts: Games to elicit communication and fantasy expression, using traditional
games in child therapy, game play for children in crisis, therapeutic games for children with ADHD and teaching social skills
through games. This second text is therefore an illustration of how this field has undergone a specialization in evaluation
and problem solving of many problems of childhood and adolescence. I especially found the chapter by Steven Reid on "Therapeutic
use of card games with learning disabled children" and the chapter by Billie Corder on "Using games and game play in group
therapy with sexually abused children and adolescents" worth reading both due to its review, case story and practical approach.
This textbook is recommended to mental health clinicians (psychologists, social workers, nurses, psychiatrists) working with
children and adolescents.

This is an excellent compilation of essays written by various people in education dealing with queer youth issues. The book
is informative and offers concrete advice for incorporation of queer studies into the high school curricula. It's underlying
theme lies in "normalizing" queer issues in schools so GLBTQ students begin to feel more accepted and may thus be happier
in their high school experiences.

Thomas Davey's "A Generation Divided" provides an evocative view of the thoughts of children living in a divided Berlin during
a critical juncture of the Cold War. Davey's writing is beautiful and the psychological portraits provided are truly inspiring.
This book is an essential benchmark for future scholars and a guide to East-and-West perspectives that resonate today. The
book's power and drama come not only from the deeply affecting look at the political socialization of children, but also from
the words and colorful drawings of the children themselves. This is a profound work. I very much hope that Davey will at
some point follow-up with an update on the lives of the children interviewed now that Berlin has fallen. What a sequel that
would make! This book is heartily recommended.

this book edited by joe austin is a comprehensive selection from some very fine scholars on the subject of youth culture.
some of the topics include such misunderstood cutlures as graffiti writers, skateboarders, zoot suiters, double dutch girls
and so on. These authors are committed to the articulation of these cultures from the perspective of the participants rather
than using youth culture as a jumping off point fo r theoretical meandering. This is a great introduction to the field and
will be of interest to both scholars and general readers.

This is one of the best books I've come across that really assesses how girls are using the Internet - everything from commercial
sites, to personal webpages, blogs, and fandom. The overall tone is balanced and hopeful and avoids the media-hype moral-panic
that other works tend to attach to young girls online. Gives new insight while also providing a springboard for future research.
