Beautiful psychological text!!!

I have to say, I have fallen in love with Dr. Putnam's writing through reading this book. Dr. Putnam is clearly well read and is highly experienced in the field of dissociative disorders. Many consider his other book on diagnosing and treating DID to be the BIBLE of working with DID patients.

In "Dissociation in Children and Adolescents," Dr. Putnam presents an eloquent mixture of empiracle data and psychological theory. Putnam presents the DBS (Discrete Behavioral State) theory of dissociation in rich detail and also touches on other matters such as psychopharmacology and neuroscience. At times, the text can become slightly dense, but only to a degree (I feel) that makes the book all the more delightful, challenging, and interesting to read.

Overall, I found Putnam's book to be insighful, interesting, and informative. I highly recommend this book not only to those interested in treating children and adolescents, but also to clinicians and students interested in dissociation--how it develops, differential diagnosis, and testing.

Furthermore, Putnam's book includes copies of the DES-II, the A-DES, and the CDC in the back of the book with the repeated and explicit blessing to copy, distribute, and use these tests. Of course, clinicians treating dissociation are probably well aware that Putnam and Carlson are the creators of the DES and its variants.

Again, I highly recommend this book to those treating dissociative patients. I even recommend it to clinicians who are *not* specifically interested in dissociation simply because, when spotted and correctly diagnosed, dissociation is treatable. Read this book!

Even though the book will be very useful to professionals, as a beginner to the field of dissociative child psychopathology, I found this book easy to read and very comprehensive. A full overview is provided, assisting with both the identification and the treatement of the dissociative child. A recommended read for both beginners to the field, and comprehensive enough to be recommended for experts. Numerous, practical examples are provided.

This book is a collection of pictures drawn by schoolchildren, with the only constraint being that the children had to 'design amachine for exercising dogs'.

It is fascinating to see the different tacks the children took, from conveyor belts to self-contained canine gyms, and the drawings themselves are absolutely delightful, ranging from the cheerfully incomprehensible to the fastidiously neat.

As De Bono points out in his (excellent) afterward, the great thing about children is that they aren't conceptually constrained by much - even the idea that a 'machine' has to save labour. My favourite invention has a dog running on a conveyor belt, surrounded by four armed guards so that he does not run away!

Get this book, any way you can. You won't be disappointed unless you're the grinch himself.

Not at all easy to read for a parent

Very powerful stuff! For those of you who are not familar with Dolto, let me tell you she is very famous in France (this will turn off those that need to be). One must understand and accept Freud and psychotherapy before even considering the book. Otherwise it will be a waste. Being midwestern, it will never be discussed here.

The case study is really comprehensive, almost unbelievable unless you have witnessed the effects of psychoanalysis in someone's life.

For a parent, it is a stunning reminder that simply being there for a child is NOT necessarily good for them. One must understand themselves and the process of development (even the arrested process into adulthood). The effects of siblings, parents, symbolism and of course imaginery and identification is absolutely profound.

Cannot wait to find more Englisg versions of her work.

Bright new perspectives on Winnicott and Bowlby
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.

I so much enjoyed reading this book! These are personal memories of Winnicott and Bowlby, two of the most important British contributors to psychoanalysis and psychotherapy in the 20th century. More than half is written by Judith Issroff, a contemporary who worked closely together with them for many years. Further chapters are added by two more experts. It is written in a lively style, completely brings to life Winnicott and Bowlby, comparing them, contrasting them, doing full justice to both, and supplying many hitherto unknown details of their lives, usually in the form of anecdotes, some funny, some deep and full of wisdom. The book would be useful and enjoyable to read for psychotherapy students as well as practitioners, and is a must for any researchers or future biographers. It contains a vast bibliography of the mushrooming recent literature about Winnicott and Bowlby.

An excellent, badly needed sourcebook on exam culture
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2003-03-24
The book is a detailed study of the university examination systems in South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. As Zeng astutely notes, "The history of exams is a history of an institution, a system. On the other hand, this system is not an empty shell, but a structural order governing human behavior and consciousness. In that sense, what we have been studying is a key behavioral pattern, the history of the pattern, and the power behind that power". This book is an excellent introduction to what can be called the "culture of exams" in the Far East. It is a badly needed sourcebook and rare history of a topic which encompasses such diverse subjects as history, education, politics, and religion. Zeng is quite good at delineating the precise influence of Japan on the exam systems, general historical trends in the development of these systems, and the social roles that the exams serve.

There are, however, several drawbacks to the book. Zeng's writing style is often quite dry and sometimes awkward, and in certain sections the book is not very well organized. Finally, at $... US, quite pricey. But these faults do not ultimately detract from the importance and novelty of this study.

Drawing Together To Build Character, by licensed clinical social worker and registered art therapist Marge Eaton Heegaard, is a compendium of simple worksheets children can use to draw upon and express their feelings. For example, one worksheet reads "I once did something that I knew was wrong. I thought it would make me feel good, but I felt bad." (Draw what you did.), followed by a large empty space for the child to draw, followed by "Honesty brings good feelings. Being dishonest brings guild and other difficult feelings." An excellent guide for sharing quality time and promoting communication within the family.

A well-written, but text-heavy book. Includes definitions and case studies of such disorders as ADHD and Tourette's. Discusses the history, risks, and side effects of different drug therapies as well as alternative treatments like special diets and "natural" medicine. Includes an index and additional resources.
