The explanation of "midlife crisis" for musical prodigy children entering their teenage years was groundbreaking. Teachers,
therapists and mentors for these individuals need this information. Good theoretical material for further basic research projects.

This book clearly shows Ms. Balls' knowledge and experience in this field, and unlike many other titles, is written absolutely
with the parent/carer in mind. There is no jargon, just pages of common sense approaches that apply not just to children who
fall within the diagnosis of DCD, but for many other children who struggle to concentrate, sit still or just take part with
their peers. It should be read, not just by parents, but by all child carers who are interested in providing the best possible
care for the children they work with.

This is a very useful book. It gives you an overview of what to expect at different ages and stages of children. It covers
what they can do physically as well as emotionally and educationally.
This is a much more detailed book than many checklists I've seen and covers many more guideposts for parents and teachers to watch for. I like that this book states very clearly that these are just guidelines and that each child grows at a different rate and that you will see some of these guidelines early and some of them later but this is a general idea of what a child can be expected to do at certain ages.

Parents can use this book to be sure their child is growing and developing in an appropriate fashion. In later years (school age years) parents can use this book to be sure teachers are working with kids in an age appropriate manner.
Teachers can use this book as well to enhance their teaching as they learn what students are capable of at certain ages.
Well worth the money.
Enjoy.

In exhaustive research over a three-year period, psychiatrist Cantwell, linguist Baker and colleagues, including Howard Grey,
Ph.D. Richard Mattison, M.D. and Beth Phillips, M.A. looked at the rarely considered incidence of psychiatric disorders in
children with speech and language disorders. That study, conducted at Community Speech and Hearing Center in Tarzana, California
contributed a great deal to the authors' understanding of factors affecting the development of speech and language in the
young child. Too often, texts dealing with speech and language acquisition reflect a narrow educationally-based developmental
focus without consideration of the impact of psychoemotional, biochemical, or neurological forces. This text is highly recommended
for developmental teachers, theorists and therapists seeking such a comprehensive orientation.

The recent trend toward academics for young children is based on misconceptions about early learning. In fact, children learn
most effectively through a concrete, play-oriented approach. How, then, can programs and teaching strategies be designed based
on what we know about the development of young children?
The guidelines in this book will help teachers, parents, program administrators, policy makers, and others make informed decisions about the education of young children. - from book's back cover

I came across this book a few years back and found that it had a strong influence on how I thought about and conceptualized
learning disorders. Pennington does a nice job of integrating research with case studies. The NVLD chapter especially had
an effect upon how I conceptualized assessment data and presented it to parents and professionals. A good survey of the neuropsychological
underpinnings of various learning disorders. The material in each chapter has been covered in greater depth in other writings,
but this provides a good overview and catalyst for changing the way one thinks about learning disorders. May be a bit technical
for nonprofessionals, but Pennington's writing style is generally readable.
